I went with the stock improved tune and it made a big difference! I’ll do the exhaust/stage 1.0 next year. I like taking small steps at a time to see if it makes a difference. Plus it gives me more to look forward to in the future. I did put a 42T rear sprocket On today, and at least now I can pop a wheelie!

I adjusted the cable on my 300 Rally when I first got it, about two years ago., but I did it at the top, on the handlebars. Same thing really. It helped throttle response slightly. I noticed a difference., but I still wasn’t satisfied. I lived with it for about a year, until I finally gave in, and decided to let 550 Performance tune the ECU.
I wasn’t looking for a power increase, I just wanted some power/throttle management. Like you said, Honda puts so many restrictions on this little motor, and a lot of that can be rectified with tuning the ECU.
I went with Stock improved tune. So no other mods are required. And even though I wasn’t searching for a power increase, I still got a 9% power increase above stock, and a 4% torque increase, and that was noticeable. Now the bike runs and accelerates like it is supposed to.
I didn’t have to put an aftermarket exhaust on it, I just did an air box lid modification, and now the power delivery is much more smoother, and linear. The deceleration fuel cut was altered, so that alleviates the on/off throttle sensitivity.
Now When I jump off my bike, and on to my buddy’s pure stock 300l, it almost feels like his bike has a slipping clutch in the low-mid range compared to mine. And his twitchy throttle is still noticeable compared to mine, even after we adjusted his cable.
I might upgrade my exhaust in the future. And if I do, 550 Performance will reflash my ECU for free, I just pay for shipping.
I don’t want a loud pipe, but going from the stock improved tune, to the stage 1.0 tune with an aftermarket exhaust will give the bike a 18% power increase, and a 12% torque increase, which is more than doubled what I have now.
I recently bought new tires, which are 12mm taller than the stock IRC’s, so I just put a 42T rear sprocket on it today to try and compensate,, and holy cow... My buddy on his stock 300l can’t keep up anymore. Every time we lined them up, I lead him by 2-3 bike lengths, and it slowly pulls away from his until we get to 5th gear.
Plus my front wheel comes off the ground with ease now. And, I regained my top speed back with the 42T since I put the new tires on. True story. My low end power is more controllable for slow technical stuff, and I regained my Highway speed.
Woodsman Adventure told me about that, and he was right.
I’m so satisfied with these mods, so I probably won’t do an exhaust/tune upgrade again for another year or so, but even like it is, it truly feels like a different bike. Especially having a stock bike to compare to. A lot more pep, smoother throttle, and a tad bit faster than stock. Nothing crazy, but definitely noticeable. It just feels like what it should be from the manufacturer now. And, I should add that 550 Performance has been a pleasure to work with, and will answer any questions you might have. Their website pretty much covers it all too though.

Hello Jim! I have a Crf300 Rally and just did a high flow exhaust system and sent in the ECU to 550 Performance and got the stage 1 flash. Had it back in a week and Sir I think you would love it. I share the same license plate so went out few days ago with crazy warm weather and I can just say wow the modifications well worth it. Bike just runs better and she's all spicy now!

@@jimmilligan5802 Yoshi full exhaust system and if you send Maverick from 550 Performance your stock ECU $149.00 and he sent it back in 1 week. Also go with high flow air filter and that's all you need for stage 1 flash.

Great Video Jim, you know only having put double digit miles on it so far, I really wonder if it could be clutch related also. I do notice as I am engaging, I think 3rd gear just seems really slow to have any torque. 1st and 2nd seem very peppy and plenty of torque, but 3rd seems to be a bit sluggish. It does start at 2k like your 300. My Rally has that same digital gauge package. It has 19k miles on it. The guy took crazy good care of it as it almost looks new. I think he only commuted on it, and it does have the tires to show that. I want to upgrade to a much more aggressive tire as I look for some good places to ride trails and such. Maybe this is all in my head with the gears, it's been a long time since I have ridden this style bike. One day I hope to have a stable full of bikes also. LOL

If you only a two digit miles that’s ok I now have 350 miles on mine and it runs better so I wouldn’t worry about much of anything till a1000 milled you can still adjust your clutch cable if you think it needs it but I wouldn’t worry about performance until it get more mile and gets broke in thanks for the comment ride safe ride free

The US must have a different ECU than the EU. The throttle response is instantaneous on my CRF. Don’t waste your money on an exhaust system for the CRF300 it does nothing but makes the bike louder. Up graded suspension and tires is what the bike needs the most. I still miss the old XR’s, they were excellent do it all bikes.

Sorry to be so dumb but how do you actually tighten up that slack in the throttle cable? I have the same play in my throttle which I want to reduce but I'm loathe to start loosening the nuts on my throttle cable unit and messing it all up. Thanks

On your handlebars on throttle cable is lump it will have a split going around it it’s made of rubber so you won’t hurt anything pulling it apart there will be a nut on a threaded bolt looking piece just loosen the nut and screw them apart tighten nut and your are done if you don’t follow what I am trying to say let me know and I’ll make a step by step video you ain’t dumb actually asking questions when you are not sure is a very smart thing to do thanks for the comment ant let me know ride safe ride free

Do not super glue that tank! Plastic tanks breathe, they're porous. When that sticker gets all bubbled just buy new stickers. Also look up the throttle reset. You won't be able to do it with your throttle raised but you can set it to stock, do the throttle reset and then crank it back up.

    • @jimmilligan5802
      @jimmilligan5802  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Don’t mean to be disagreeable but if tanks were porous they would seep gas they are vented through the cap and decals have an adhesive on them to make them stick as far as the throttle is concerned if you check the video again you’ll see that I never changed the throttle body position I only took the excessive slop out of the cable but thanks for you comment with feed back we get different points of view and hopefully learn something in the process ride safe ride free
