This video is designed to be a guide for testing and troubleshooting your TV repair. Please note that other complications may exist that aren't addressed in this guide. While we always strive to provide accurate and detailed information, we can't guarantee that it will fix your TV's issues.
Warranty & Shipping Prices May Vary. Please see Product Page on our website for more information!
We are going to be giving a general overview of LCD TV Repair in this video and we are going to be taking a look at the different components in LCD TVs and what can go wrong with the components and the symptoms they will show and how to diagnose the problems and how to get them fixed.
Before beginning work, be sure you have unplugged the TV from any power source and that you are properly grounded.
Remove all the screws for the back cover of the TV.
Remove the back panel of the TV.
Identify different parts of the TV. Power supply takes in and distributes power throughout the TV.
Main board typically manages all inputs and outputs for your video and sound.
Backlight Inverter controls your CCFLs and the light source for the TV.
T-con board connects the video from the main board to the panel through the LVDS cable.
Not every TV is the exact same.
There are two different levels of TV repair, component level repair and board replacement repair.
The first thing that could go wrong with the power supply is that the TV will not turn on. Be sure your outlet works and then begin to diagnose the issue and either check components or replace your power supply board.
Some common problems on these power supply boards are bad capacitors with bulgy caps or leaking fluid.
The first sign that the main board could have a problem is if you do not have an image on the screen. Be sure your source video is working correctly. Either replace the problem components on the board or replace the entire board.
The t-con board could show a problem symptom if you are able to hear the show on your screen, but you cannot see the image, there is most likely a problem with your t-con board. The t-con is also known for causing vertical colored lines or half of your screen not having an image.
Backlight inverter problem symptoms turn on the TV and the image only shows for a second and then the image goes black, or if you have a flickering image on your screen it could be the backlight inverter that is causing this problem.

Thanks for the clearly presented lesson. Module replacement is usually the best way to go, because most folks aren't adept at desoldering/resoldering components.

I just replaced my mainboard on my CX after my television was randomly freezing and making a horrific siren like nose until I unplugged it. It would also randomly freeze without the noise and I would have to unplug it to get it to work again.
I ended finding a lot on eBay containing a used like new mainboard, power supply, wifi module, power button, and screen board for only $75. I couldn't believe how cheap I got all of these parts for; $75 for a $291 mainboard is a steal. I got really lucky finding this deal. My tv works fine now and I have a ton of backup parts as well. Doing this myself saved me around $500 to $600. The hardest part was moving the tv out of the carpeted room and into a room without carpet.

KDL52EX700 Sony - Display is quite dim -but visble- and colors are distorted/remapped. There are no patchy/regional effects. Its done this several times, and then it would start working again - 100% perfect. Audio always works. Input from all sources are displayed the same on the screen. Going to split case to look for leaky caps, sniff around and look for damaged components.

Hi Guys thanks for the great videos, they help lots. I have a LG 60la8600 and the screen just went blank the other day, i had one of LG's techs come check it for me and after paying a call out fee he told me my T-con board (P/N 6870c-0445a) was damaged. asking him where can i get one he told me i couldn't get it separately as it comes with the screen, only problem is the screen cost more than the price of the TV itself. I then started my mission to find alternative repair options cause only 3 years ago i spend close to $3000 for a brand new TV and now i must use it as paper weight. after months of searching i finally found the exact T-con board for my TV and the seller was kind enough to give me two of them. excited i then installed my new T-con and boom no change still no picture just a slight glow as before, tried both T-con and same result. i then wondered if its possible that the problem is something else maybe the main board but though i may end up buying all the parts in my tv so maybe look help instead and that's how i got to your channel. needless to say I've tried your website lots of times but get an (access denied error) don't know why but maybe you can help me with that too. but preferably please help me first with a diagnosis of my LG's problem. maybe this is important, TV has sound but no picture and when i press the menu button on the remote i can see something is happening on the screen in the form of the glow intensity but nothing other than that. please please help thank you

Just came across this channel, and it just may be what Im looking for. I work for a Home/Business Security company and we do a lot of TV and monitor installs. I often have to replace many "broken" TVs and more often than not, the older TV is simply tossed out. Once I discovered that there are tons of videos available showing how to fix what is often a pretty simple issue, I got to where Im collecting the older TVs. I got a couple right now. One is a Westinghouse LCD TV with a 'Won't turn on' issue. The other is a Sanyo Model DP42840. And its the Sanyo that I have a question about at the moment. It's having picture issues. When its turned on, the screen on the left side (facing TV) will begin to turn white. It will go about 25 to 30% of the way across then stop. When you turn TV to another input thats not being used, you will see the white gradually begin to recede and go away. Hoping you may be able to let me know what that might be indicative of. I appreciate any help you can give. Thank you.

+jeremybr2020 Try all repairs and troubleshooting at your own risk. This could be a problem with either the main board OR the TV Panel. You can replace the main board to see if that fixes the problem. If that does not fix the problem, then you most likely have a problem with the TV panel. The TV panel cannot be repaired and sometimes it is not cost-effective to try and replace the panel. Click this link to replacement parts for your TV model number: www.shopjimmy.com/catalogsearch/result/index/?cat=56&q=DP42840 There may be multiple boards for the same TV model number, be sure to match part numbers on your current board, with your replacement for compatibility. Here is a link to a video showing how to identify your part number, click here: th-cam.com/video/Mi0D7ksQp7IT/w-d-xo.htmlhanks and please let us know if you have any further questions with your TV Repair! www.shopjimmy.com

+ShopJimmy.com So I decided to put the Sanyo on hold and check out what I figured was a simpler issue with the Westinghouse. The Westinghouse TX-47F430S is having the all to common, "Won't Power On" problem. I get a red light, so it seems to be getting at least some power. It also used to power on occasionally. But now it hasn't in quite some time. So I go to remove the back cover. Let me first say that Ive watched quite a few different TV video repairs. Ive seen the backs of several different LCD TVs. It would appear that Im unlucky enough to have one of the more complex inner workings out there. There's no simple "Take off back cover. Remove the 4 to 6 screws and take off the metal cage/covering off of power supply and there you go" Hell no. I got some weird ass bulky middle assembly that requires either really small fingers or some kind of pliers to remove the ribbons and connections before you somehow remove the outer metal box cage thing......holy crap what a pain in the ass. Sorry to make this so long. Let me wrap it up with a question. Do you know if there are any videos out there showing the removal of the back components on that model TV? Just want to make sure Im doing it correctly.

+jeremybr2020 Try all repairs and troubleshooting at your own risk. Unfortunately, I do not see any information for that model. You could upload an image or video online of the back cover or anything that is difficult and we could then take a look at that image or video and let you know any suggestions. Just reply with the link if you do that. Thanks! www.shopjimmy.com

I managed to figure it out. Thank you anyways. The only problem now is that I don't see any obvious issues. No bulged caps or things of that nature. Now I still need to go get my tester so I can actually get a reading on the capacitors. So we'll see how that turns out in a few days.

Reset with remote button sequence, Reset button on back panel, and drained capacitor holding down power button behind standby LED. Naturally system restart, including unplugging. As mentioned, sometimes works normal for hours. Although not so much lately. This all started a month or so ago.

Hi, glad to have found this on the internet, very informative video. I have a Sony KDL-42W829B which now displays only large vertical coloured bars like as in a RGB Screen test, no image can be seen between bars or even faded, I cant even see the menus on screen. I tried disconnecting and reconnecting the ribbons from the T-Con board but no difference noticed, the audio is working though which according to your tutorial could be the T-Con board. I know you also mentioned the inverter can cause a similar issue, sound ok but no image, would that also cause large stripes on screen? Can you also tell whether could merely be a fault on the lcd panel? I have checked by pressing all ribbons attached but never seen any reaction, Thanks.

Works great, except now it won't find any digital or analog channels when I perform the Auto Detection (antenna source). Hello Jimmy. I have a Sharp Roku LC-50LB481U LCD Smart TV with no back light but the image is there when shining a light on the screen. I was trying to check the voltages at the connection going out to the LED’s from the power supply board. What can I check with a meter to narrow down to the main culprit? Great videos, by the way.

Hi jimmy, thanks for the tutorial I found it helpful. I have insignia LCD TV NS-39L240A13. Audio but no picture, Can't see the menu characters on the screen. Backlight is lit. Power supply voltages OK. After play with video sources bottom at blind I got audio from my dvd. Based on your tutorial it seems to me that T-con board has the most chance to cause this issue but I think there is not way to replace it. the second other reason for what I understood could be the main board. I am not quite sure what to do. Some advice please? Thanks

Hi, thank you for your video. Very helpful!
I have a TV set LG 37LK430. It was pluged-in to a multisocket but was on stand-by. I was plugging in into the same multisocket another device and a short circuit occured and the something in the TV burned. Now when I plug-in the TV the small blue control light comes on for 2 seconds and then goes off. I checked the fuses on the power board and they seem to be working. Could you give me some hints what to check. Could this be something else apart of power board? Many Thanks. Christophe

Hello. I have an LG TV, model No. 42LB550A. It had a problem of no picture but sound was available. Indeed when I opened I found that two of the LED lenses had fallen off. So I decided to replace all the strips considering the age of the TV...
While doing the strip replacements, one of the strips on the B-side I ran out of double sided tape and proceeded to Installing the strip direct on metal surface. Upon restoration the picture quality had improved tremendously. However, this came with a small irritating problem. There was repetitive transient flicker on the picture recurring like every second or two. After observing for sometime without improvement, I discontinued use and thought of replacing the B-strip installed with padding (double sided tape) between strip and TV chassis.
After replacing this, the irritating repetitive flicker disappeared but I completely lost the picture. Played around with the ribbon cables on the T-con board, vertical colour Iines appeared with a small portion on top (like 1/8th) of the screen showing a fuzzy picture while sound was normal.
I've just packed it for now as I have travelled hoping to continue as I get back by weekend....
I can share videos of there's a way of attaching here...
Kindly help me determine what to do next....

Hi thanks for this great video. It doesn't however help me with my predicament, could you please help? The issue is that after turning the TV on it lookes like someone is playing with the remote. Random things appear on the screen with no pattern (changing the input, settings etc). I removed batteries from the remote and disconected the manual control board (at the back of the TV) but it still won't help. Any ideas what might be causing this?

I want to make sure im hearing it correctly, the name of the board that is welded to this particular model is called the T-COM board, or is it the T-CON board? Secondly, I have a Haier LCD 32" and placed exactly the same way on your Sony but it is at the bottom of mine. How do I know that it is welded there, and not by other (removable) means placed there?

+courtney bush Try all repairs and troubleshooting at your own risk. This sounds like a TV panel (TV Screen) problem. If your TV panel is bad, it may be more cost-effective to replace the TV as panels are typically hard to find in stock, difficult to replace, and expensive. Thanks and please let us know if you have any further questions! www.shopjimmy.com

I have a Sharp Aquos 70LE735. About two years ago, the TV failed to turn on, but the power LED remained blinking. After a web search I found a way to restart the TV (holding down power button while plugging it in). This helped for a couple of years. But a few days ago the TV turned off while I was watching a program. My usual technique of holding down the power button while plugging in, does not seem to work anymore. I found another technique on the web to restart the TV to bring it to the "K" screen (holding down Vol- and Input buttons while plugging it in displays a "K" on the screen) - but the TV stayed on only a few seconds.
The "V" Power LED on the TV blinks once per sec (alternates between a short blink and a long blink). I should also note that I am using the 110V/50Hz TV in India where the power source is 220V/60Hz - I am using a step down transformer along with a Monster power conditioner to power the TV.
Please let me know your thoughts on what the problem could be.

JVC EM32T when powered on it cycles through all the colors and black and gray and also then combines all the colors throughout the cycle. Once it starts this it sometimes powers itself off and sometimes not. Remote will not work while it does this. Problem started with regular picture on TV showing to much red after being on a few minutes, and eventually picture becoming unwatchable once it was warm. Hope you guys can help, you have been a life saver with parts and service in the past so I have confidence you can help. Joe

Hi I have a Sony KDL-26U2000. I plugged my active speakers into the aux socket of my TV to get the sound of my TV to come through my speakers, when I turned off my speakers the TV went black and turned off. I have checked the power output which is working fine, the fuse in the plug for the TV which is also okay in other appliances. I took the back off the TV and tested the fuse inside the TV which also works fine. What is the solution? Is there more than one internal fuse? Thanks!

HI Jimmy, this posting is from a few years ago but so was my LCD TV.
My TV was a Philips 17 or 23PF9946. The display was geting bad, but at least the power was working fine. Unfortunately, I took the thing apart without noting first how the power was started up from standby.
The powerunit has nr PLC170P1 and is supplied with "green" standby chips TEA1601T and TEA1533AT. The voltage on the large elco is OK, but I have no idea how to start it: there must be some low voltage somewhere that you connect perhaps to ground(??) to create a logical signal to come out of standby.
Any advice welcome, Maarten Boer (the picture is my youngest grandson)

I have a Sharp LC70UQ17U. It started to get horizontal black wedges that flashed across the screen. Sometimes one of the wedges would have blue and yellow vertical blocks in it. The wedges were not always in the same place. Occasionally the tv would turn on and be normal for a few minutes and then start with the flashing wedges. Now the tv won't come on at all. The power indicator light will flash but no picture or sound. What do you think the problem could be?

I have a Philips 186 LCD Model number 47PFL6704D/FT. The serial number is YA1A0927007580. The unit has no power. I should add that this TV quit working about 1 year after I hung it outside on the wall in my lanai in Sarasota Florida. It has not been rained on but of course it is very humid outside most of the year. Should I mess with changing out the Power supply or any of its components (fuse) or just toss it. It was a spare TV and I know that TV's and humidity don't mix. Thanks for your input

Hello ShopJimmy. I have a Sony Bravia 55BX520 with no sound, no picture and no indicator / blinking lights on the front of the set. The set is dead. I made sure the wall outlet was working and tried the little reset / check sequence on the Sony esupport website to no avail. I then pulled the back panel and checked the main fuse on the power supply board with my meter, fuse is good. Btw I can hear a relay energizing type noise from the power supply board when I plug the set in. After I verified the fuse was good I checked the 12v & 24vDC output voltages at the pin connectors on the power supply board and those were present as well. At this point I would like advice from you concerning my problem. I have a feeling the main board is shot but??

After watching this video I purchased a T-Con board for my LN46A550P3F Samsung TV. The problem is the TV does power up every time, however most times I only have Audio and no Video. On occasion the Video will come on and stay on as long as the set is powered up. If I power off the TV it may have video next time I power up, but chances are that it will not have video. I keep turning on and off until the video appears. If the video does go away the sound remains working. Can you recommend a solution to this problem? Thanks Phil
