    • @gerble36
      @gerble36 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Technically, shields should be usable while cloaked. It will just give their position away, hence making the cloak useless and wasting energy doing nothing. Shields drop when they go into cloak is probably an automatic function facilitated by their computer to ensure that they can cloak and conceal their emissions and energy outputs effectively. Cloaking manually probably allows for a ship to keep their shields up longer so they can slip away safely, but likely has very little room for error.

      Presumably Data is reporting what’s happened from the ships subspace sensor array which operates at superluminal speeds whereas the viewscreen is a purely visual device operating at light speed. Depending on range the events on the viewscreen could be 10-15 seconds removed from what’s happening on sensors. I’d say it’s reasonable to assume that a full assault like is shown on the viewscreen is what preceded the loss of the port shields.

      One of the points they keep hitting in this episode is that the civil war is an internal political matter. In Yesterday's Enterprise, it was the Romulans attacking, so I could see the Federation getting involved as being as valid for them as if it was the Borg. A power attacking from without, not within.
      As much as it sucks, I can see how the Prime Directive is applied more clearly here; intervening would actually count as interfering in the Klingon state. It's the same thing that Picard lectured Worf on earlier: using his power as a Starfleet officer to effect political change in the Empire.

    Picard is worried helping Gowron would drag the Federation into the civial war.
    Well, Gowron surely won't like the Enterprise 'chickening out' right there, despite a distress call.
    But then again, without Picard he wouldn't be chancellor. Now he's gotta show he can handle the responsibility. And Gowron seems to take it that way. Would look bad to get outside help.
    Worf: "No. ... Don't you see?" - Worf was very daring there with his confrontational wording. Could indicate his displeasure with Gowron's refusal to restore his name, albeit for a reason. But generally this could be seen as a habitual not-quite-respecting his chancellor-level competence but establishing his own skills and advertising them. - That is straightforward - courageous.
    Also, are they telling us the attackers cannot detect whether their weapons are online or not? Or that they think just because the auto-aim is offline, they won't be using them against a sitting duck target at almost point blank range?

      Sisko infiltrated because he thought there was a changeling involved and that Gowron was a changeling but it turned out to be Martok. Picard's reasoning about not answering a general distress signal is flawed. He still has a duty to not ignore an ally's distress signal. As for the aspect of non-interference, that reasoning is also flawed as at the moment it is an insurgency and he has a duty, if not a responsibility to come to an ally's aid in a time of crisis. His argument only stands up to scrutiny if it was the leader of the insurgency asking for aid and not the legitimate leader of the Empire. The Khitomer Accords are pretty much a roadmap to which side the Federation is on, the side of the legitimate ruler of the Klingon Empire. During these type of hostilities, you act in the best interests of preserving life, especially given the immediate necessity. After the fact you can follow whatever directive the Federation Council orders, but up until that time a lone ships Captain does not have the authority to decide what is in the best interests of an entire Federation. His duty is to act to preserve life against an attack.

    • @InfernosReaper
      @InfernosReaper 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The general distress call + the ambush nature of the attack + the fact the target of said attack is the *rightful leadership* = Picard should step in and give assistance *that one time*
      If it weren't for the fact that there was someone within range to give aid, Picard may as well have attacked the ship himself.
      Of course, this may be speculation, but I'm pretty sure Picard *did* know there was already a nearby ship ready to help and all the standing around is just for posterity.

    • @tauron1
      @tauron1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@InfernosReaper , I'm not so sure, Kurn's ship was cloaked and arrived late enough that Gowron's ship would have been destroyed, if it wasn't for Worf's manual control of the blasters that destroyed the one attacking Bird of Prey, buying them a little time. The writers on this show were usually pretty good at recognizing protocols and rules of engagement, but really messed this one up in my opinion or just got lazy in the quest for a little drama.

    • @Dowlphin
      @Dowlphin 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@InfernosReaper The whole context is relevant, and Picard mentioned it. He didn't want it to look like Gowron was lifted in the seat by the Federation. He had already done all he can. The act of helping, despite technically legitimate, would have looked really bad.
