When you know something is wrong, you may not be able to always explain the situation to others because they don’t see what’s happening and why. Knowing it, now just dealing with it. At some point you just defy the world illusionary subsequent behavior and make a stand for what you know to be right! No regrets.
Nope, there was just no getting around the fact that Minuette was not a real person, and everyone else except for Picard should not have know anything about her. 😒👎 So, the whole thing had to be fake. Or course, I think Riker was wrong to tell Tomoloc that was how he knew it was all not real. If that had to be left unexplained to the audience as well, then so be it.
I'm sure they put that in there as a joke. However if you had a real empath I think it would be hard for them to tell when everyone else already knows how the person is feeling. Just like it's hard for Data to know how much information is needed. Also, the show has to make the person's emotions and intentions obvious to the audience but they're not necessarily supposed to be obvious to the crew. I see that in other shows where it seems obvious that someone's lying, and the protagonist doesn't realize it.

I am 100% sure it was a joke that was making fun of the fact that she is often Counselor Obvious. I also have a theory why she states the obvious, 1. The audience can often tell if a character is up to something though the others in the story can't, 2. It is possible Picard is particularly bad at reading peoples' emotions. 3. It would be hard for her to know when others can read someone's emotions, because she doesn't have to rely on facial cues and body language. It's like how Data doesn't know if he's stating the obvious.
Riker proceeds to ask them random questions for the next half hour, "Have you ever walked out of the mall into a huge parking area and realized you'd forgotten where you parked your car?"
They really nailed Deanna. At least they got one of them flawless. "SHUT UP!! I SAID SHUT UP!! AS IN CLOSE YOUR MOUTH AND STOP TALKING!" "Will.. I'm sensing you're upset."
I love the way Jonathan Frakes delivers the words “Which sector?” to Worf. You can really hear the venom and disgust at being misled in those two words.
I also love that this shows the Commander’s relationship with the crew. He knows how Worf got those scars, maybe stories over drinks. He knows how incredibly competent LaForge is, basically saying; you would be physically incapable of that level of incompetence if you actually were the man you’re pretending to be I want to watch TNG now, I watched so often as a kid whenever it came on SpikeTV.
I really do love how what he's really pissed off about isn't just the mindfuck he's been put through, but also that his captors are immitating his friend's capabilities so poorly.
Both a compliment and a mild diss, suggesting that the real La Forge isn't this stupid, but is capable of some almost stupid stuff. Again, great writing.
I always loved the throwaway line when Jordi couldn't get the computer fixed in less than thirty hours. " You're incapable of that level of incompetence, Mr. LaForge!" It was a small line that was a testament to Rikers knowledge and respect for the real Geordis skill level.

What I like about this is how Riker dismantles the illusion using the knowledge of his crewmen. He specifically targets parts of their personalities only he would know. For example; Picard wouldn't have shut up when told to and Troy would have absolutely freaked out if told to "back off" He used his personal relationship with his crew to prove his point. That's why he's Captian material and has been so for so long. To the point Picard asks him why he keeps denying the positions offered to him.

I like how he's insulting everyone in the room knowing they're all fakes based on how incompetent the fakes are, but goes easy on Deana in case it is the real one.
Within the context of the episode, it's supposed to be blatantly obvious because that Troi was an illusion, so therefore didn't have empathic powers. It's the kind of obvious statement a child would make, which is exactly what it was. In real life, (on the show anyway) her ability allows her to pick up on non-obvious cues and other more subtle emotions such as deception, and jealousy. Also she could sense another life form or sentient presence when the computer could not. I highly enjoyed this series so I will speak in its defense when necessary. I WILL say that it wasn't perfect, though.
TNG really had an all-star cast and (TV) crew. Not simply the acting or writing, but the score, soundscape, shot selections, and angles. All underappreciated.

The rest, Rick Berman had a policy of making the music suck so it doesn't distract the viewers. Once or twice they snuck in a good song accidentally / to spite him. This policy was apparently continued under Voyager. DS9 idk, someone tell me if they changed their music at all in seven damned seasons

You didn't go all the way or you would have passed out when it dawned upon you what you just did. Good chances to wake up in a phantasy world after that, or at least one seeming so different that you could believe it.
This is an Oscar winning performance by Jonathan Frakes! The delivery is masterful with clear cut throat intention!! His total understanding and complete were with all is so intense and controlled. Just a stellar performance by a great actor! ❤️

You gotta love Will's face at the beginning of this clip; he's already figured it out, and now he's just building an airtight case to confirm what he knew the moment he saw his "wife" in the previous scene. Funny part is, when Tomalok says "the charade is over", that's also a lie; there's more to come AFTER this amazing clip. Not the absolute best episode of season 4, but a good example of the generally high bar of quality we get from that season onward (and 3 was at least starting to get that good; 7 drops off a little but not much IMO, and 5 and 6 are absolute gold with few exceptions). By the way, I never noticed before that Troi has yet another new hairstyle in this episode, never seen elsewhere.
What I never understood is why the charade was even dropped. I've found myself in situations where I know I was being deceived, I think we all have. After going back and forth one starts getting comments like "You always have to be right' or "I feel like I'm being trapped by all the questions." or "You're just being an asshole". I guess I'm saying that if they had kept going long enough he'd be curled into a corner drooling and doubting his own sanity. So why stop? Romulans aren't above torture and they wanted information. Kept the plot going I guess.
@@humanbeing4995 In this episode, it was a lonely boy with an advanced holodeck that his mom set up for him to keep him from feeling lonely (she kept him underground to be safe from invaders and was never able to return). He lured Riker there out of loneliness. For the boy to keep going with the charade even after Riker figured it out after the Romulan illusion would have been pointless and cruel, as the boy was not malevolent. What you are describing would be Frame of Mind, in Season 6, Episode 21, with those holding the "puppet strings" around Riker having much darker reasons for a charade.

That's not a good series of questions given that Worf received it as a gift; he probably wouldn't know where the person who bought it for him got it, much less the specific details of it (but maybe it's a Klingon tradition to interrogate the gift giver on details about the acquisition of the gift, wouldn't surprise me too much, Klingons are a little weird). Better would probably be to go "Which wrapping paper, who gave it to you, on what stardate?"

The actress wasn't comfortable with the form-fitting body suits and low cut tops they had her wear, but her choice was to wear them or not be on the show. Since she's just eye candy she can't really be solving major issues all by herself, can she? The truth is that if Deanna's character had been utilized to her proper potential, she could have avoided huge portions of their conflicts and problems. But if that happened then there wouldn't have been nearly as much show and the writers would have had to work even harder. So eye candy she remained, even after they started treating her character more "seriously." It's one of my only major complaints about TNG.
@@collincivish8962 They could've had her character be of unique benefit to the crew more often. Like in the "fake Picard episode," she should've at least been the first to say that that's not Picard. Regarding the eye candy thing. Sometimes women are attractive or sexy. Just like sometimes men are tall or handsome. If you view that as something upsetting, you're going to be very upset very often and not change anything because people will always be attracted to each other and it's going to be a point sometimes in stories.
Data is a revolutionary, ultra-advanced being capable of things nobody else can do. On numerous occasions he was the only reason the Enterprise survived, he can evolve and upgrade himself with emotion chips and the like, but there is no way in hell he's capable of combining the words 'can' and 'not' -- it's just too hard.
I spoke German until I was 5yo. German has contractions, but not in the same places as English. I've been speaking English for 67 years now, and I still tend to not use them: I go back and edit my text to put them in. If Data spent the first X years of his existence without contractions, he may still need a separate grammar loop to put them in.
I've always thought that was weird, and even more so now because my cheap smartphone can recognize contractions, both with auto-correct (Im to I'm) or if I use voice to text. Picard season 3 spoiler: Data can finally use contractions.
You're right... between this, his being kidnapped by those terrorists who tried to steal his long-term memory, and discovering his accidental transporter clone (who now goes by "Thomas"), you have to hand it to Riker for being able to stay grounded in reality.
And that episode where he was a crazy man but then it changed to him in a ship play as a crazy man..... That episode always felt like a looping fever dream.
Notice how he isn't actually roasting his crewmates, everything he says is basically "you guys are nowhere near as competent as the people i know". It's actually pretty heartwarming

Her empathetic powers are certainly inconsistent. Like the episode "Hollow Pursuits," where Reginald Barclay has a massive crush on Troi. However, when La Forge sends Barclay to a counselling session, she's completely at a loss as to why Barclay is behaving the way he is. In Ten Forward afterwards she says how confused she is and doesn't understand his behavior at all. Really? You can't sense a guy 3 feet away from you pulsating lust towards you?

It actually makes me laugh how the Star Trek universe kills off anyone with behaviors that are too incongruent to their utopian explorer's society. I can fully understand why Patrick Stewart didn't like the role of Picard. It's nothing but an elementary school fantasy but it's sure a fun one to watch.

@Laconic913 Picard had several episodes involving diplomacy and relations, first contact roles, arbitration....Data was already more than a robot, he's an android.....Nailed the Worf, sorta right about Geordi, Nailed the Troi, Riker has many episodes where he fights, commands the ship in combat, away missions, investigative roles, tutors, one ups rivals in competition, chases Troi around for her affection....
That's not fair. Riker had one of the best episodes ever, where he was part of an officer exchange program with the Klingons. He went over to a Klingon ship to be their XO, it was amazing.
PlasmaMongoose her character was far more useful in season one, also they kinda lamed data out after then, sure his character grew but they totally just started to ignore his android advantages

Maybe Riker went easy on the illusory Deanna because he didn't have anything in particular to say to such an obvious simulation. Riker 'loves' all his friends, in different ways. Also The Enterprise Herself. Imagine someone imitating your home and friends and pretending to know what they all are about. So I think Riker maintained his composure pretty well overall in that situation.
I love how the music escalates, it gets higher and more... dramatic when Riker says shut up at about 1:32. It really adds to the big reveal Riker is making and his frustration at what's happening.
I love that even though he is 99.9% sure that this is all a charade he still doesn't quite tell Deanna to piss off in the same manner as everyone else. One of the greatest Star Trek moments imo.

LeVar actually mentions this once in a behind the scenes clip. Something about how much of a challenge it was for him (who uses his eyes a lot in his acting, paraphrasing here) to act on a show where they are hidden all the time. So essentially, he's probably moving his eyes around like that even behind his VISOR lol.
Considering everything can be explained away on that show with science jargon, I like to think every episode Geordie could have had his visor done away with, but they kept it just to mess with the actor. There are like filing cabinets full of unused scripts where Geordie got new eyes only to have a __________ (warp core explosion, Spot the cat, transporter malfunction, etc) blind him again.

The original series movie-era uniforms were in use for decades. From late-23rd century until well into the mid-24th. Clearly occasionally Starfleet likes a design and decides if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I believe Marina Sirtis was irritated by this, feeling redundant.
Within the context of the episode, it's supposed to be blatantly obvious because that Troi was an illusion, so therefore didn't have empathic powers. It's the kind of obvious statement a child would make, which is exactly what it was. In real life, (on the show anyway) her ability allows her to pick up on non-obvious cues and other more subtle emotions such as deception, and jealousy. Also she could sense another life form or sentient presence when the computer could not. I highly enjoyed this series so I will speak in its defense when necessary. I WILL say that it wasn't perfect, though.

You gotta love Will's face at the beginning of this clip; he's already figured it out, and now he's just building an airtight case to confirm what he knew the moment he saw his "wife" in the previous scene. Funny part is, when Tomalok says "the charade is over", that's also a lie; there's more to come AFTER this amazing clip. Not the absolute best episode of season 4, but a good example of the generally high bar of quality we get from that season onward (and 3 was at least starting to get that good; 7 drops off a little but not much IMO, and 5 and 6 are absolute gold with few exceptions). By the way, I never noticed before that Troi has yet another new hairstyle in this episode, never seen elsewhere.
What I never understood is why the charade was even dropped. I've found myself in situations where I know I was being deceived, I think we all have. After going back and forth one starts getting comments like "You always have to be right' or "I feel like I'm being trapped by all the questions." or "You're just being an asshole". I guess I'm saying that if they had kept going long enough he'd be curled into a corner drooling and doubting his own sanity. So why stop? Romulans aren't above torture and they wanted information. Kept the plot going I guess.
@@humanbeing4995 In this episode, it was a lonely boy with an advanced holodeck that his mom set up for him to keep him from feeling lonely (she kept him underground to be safe from invaders and was never able to return). He lured Riker there out of loneliness. For the boy to keep going with the charade even after Riker figured it out after the Romulan illusion would have been pointless and cruel, as the boy was not malevolent. What you are describing would be Frame of Mind, in Season 6, Episode 21, with those holding the "puppet strings" around Riker having much darker reasons for a charade.

@@EGarrett01 In the beginning of the series Troi was basically eye candy. The actress wasn't comfortable with the form-fitting body suits and low cut tops they had her wear, but her choice was to wear them or not be on the show. Since she's just eye candy she can't really be solving major issues all by herself, can she?
The truth is that if Deanna's character had been utilized to her proper potential, she could have avoided huge portions of their conflicts and problems. But if that happened then there wouldn't have been nearly as much show and the writers would have had to work even harder.
So eye candy she remained, even after they started treating her character more "seriously." It's one of my only major complaints about TNG.

Regarding the eye candy thing. Sometimes women are attractive or sexy. Just like sometimes men are tall or handsome. If you view that as something upsetting, you're going to be very upset very often and not change anything because people will always be attracted to each other and it's going to be a point sometimes in stories.
Data is a revolutionary, ultra-advanced being capable of things nobody else can do. On numerous occasions he was the only reason the Enterprise survived, he can evolve and upgrade himself with emotion chips and the like, but there is no way in hell he's capable of combining the words 'can' and 'not' -- it's just too hard.
I spoke German until I was 5yo. German has contractions, but not in the same places as English. I've been speaking English for 67 years now, and I still tend to not use them: I go back and edit my text to put them in. If Data spent the first X years of his existence without contractions, he may still need a separate grammar loop to put them in.

And that episode where he was a crazy man but then it changed to him in a ship play as a crazy man..... That episode always felt like a looping fever dream.

Her empathetic powers are certainly inconsistent. Like the episode "Hollow Pursuits," where Reginald Barclay has a massive crush on Troi. However, when La Forge sends Barclay to a counselling session, she's completely at a loss as to why Barclay is behaving the way he is. In Ten Forward afterwards she says how confused she is and doesn't understand his behavior at all. Really? You can't sense a guy 3 feet away from you pulsating lust towards you?

It actually makes me laugh how the Star Trek universe kills off anyone with behaviors that are too incongruent to their utopian explorer's society. That's not fair. Riker had one of the best episodes ever, where he was part of an officer exchange program with the Klingons. He went over to a Klingon ship to be their XO, it was amazing.

You reflect what a person said to ensure you understood them and/ or to reflect their own emotions back to them, thus helping them to recognize and therefore deal with their emotional state.

LeVar actually mentions this once in a behind the scenes clip. Something about how much of a challenge it was for him (who uses his eyes a lot in his acting, paraphrasing here) to act on a show where they are hidden all the time.

Considering everything can be explained away on that show with science jargon, I like to think every episode Geordie could have had his visor done away with, but they kept it just to mess with the actor. There are like filing cabinets full of unused scripts where Geordie got new eyes only to have a __________ (warp core explosion, Spot the cat, transporter malfunction, etc) blind him again.

For some reason I always loved any episode that centred on Riker. I always enjoyed seeing him save the day and this was one of his finest moments.

Amazing, I saw that scene only once when I was a kid when the episode premiered, and I still remember it today.
Riker's biggest tip off should've been that their uniform style hasnt changed at all in the last 16 years.
For real, Starfleet uniforms change like every few years.
There might have been a extremely small chance that the uniform had gone back to the way it was 16 years previously - but yes it does seem that the group that designs the uniforms get some sort of bribe from the companies that make them...
The original series movie-era uniforms were in use for decades. From late-23rd century until well into the mid-24th. Clearly occasionally Starfleet likes a design and decides if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
