But for $100? I’d take an Xbox 360.
On Tonights Episode of GHGtv, we examine whether the Xbox 360 still owns the
ultra-low budget market, or whether PC power has taken over.

I honestly don't think the Minecraft round was fair, since the PC version is written in Java and the console is C++, since Java is less optimized.
If only Microsoft wasn't dumb enough to write the only PC C++ version of the game ONLY for Windows 10...
The console versions I think are the same...notch originally wrote it in Java so there isn't really a going back option.
Java is better for servers than for desktop games. It is the best language for any serious server application now in my opinion. And when server works for a long time java virtual machine picks up statistics of what crutial bits of code need to be optimized so that used code runs almost as fast as on c++. But for games it works worse.

Yeah. Xbox360 games are incredible well optimized. Im so impressed that todays games can run on half a gig of memory.
+Tomfissh It's not hard to do with no background tasks. For example, I require around a gigabyte of RAM for running Chrome by itself on a second monitor. The 360 has the advantage of a low-power operating system with little to no multitasking.

Whatever your opinions on console vs PC, the dev team for rise of the tomb raider did a phenomenal job with regards to optimising it for the 360 hardware. Like really, it was a 10 year old piece of hardware at the time of release, and the game looked really nice AND played at a solid 30.
keep in mind this is a worst case scenario for the pc's performance since it's a budget pc
I bought my Xbox 360 for $6 at goodwill. Bought power supply, controllers, cables, and monitor for under $50 all at the same goodwill. Now if I could just find a generator...

+Dean Roberts With these older OEM computers, and GHG likes to use DELL machines a lot, they come with a Windows COA sticker. For the Core 2 Duo, it could have been Vista, or maybe even Windows 7 licence, it's hard to tell. And if it has Windows 7 COA, you can install Windows 10 for free I think. It's just if the PC is too old and comes with XP, then you are stuck.

Probably because PCPartsPicker tries to find dealers rather then using auction site like eBay, maybe?
Anyways, if your looking for a Core2Quad, try finding the Xeon counterpart, even if it means doing a LGA771 to 775 mod. It'll save you money and the Xeon chips are essentially just better binned C2Q grabbed off the line for server work. For example, Xeon X3220 = C2Q Q6600, but cost several dollars cheaper on most all auction sites.

Most of the new games aren't out on the 360 but I guess if you still have one its ok. A PC, to me, is just more versatile and you can basically do anything on it.

Sure the Xbox runs smoother bc it's games are optimised for it. The PC has much more detail but runs less smooth.
Why not put the pc settings on low so the graphics are equal to the Xbox and see how things run then?

Throw even just 50$ more at the budget and you've earned yourself a Deneb-based system, with an Athlon II X2/X3/X4 or Phenom II X2/X3/X4, and a GT 740 or HD 5750. Maybe even 3GB RAM, who knows. Bump up to 200$ and you're golden. For 155$ CAD recently, I put together;

And that's Canadian Rupees, and it games very well. Now, it's certainly unbalanced--the power supply's a bit shit, sure, and it could use a tri-core or quad-core CPU, but it soundly thrashes the Xbox 360 in everything but Battlefield 4.

A) there's no actual point in building a 100$ rig
B) IF you had to go 100$, you could still manage 3GB RAM, a better Core 2 Duo(E6750, E7200, E8400) or Phenom/Athlon II(PII X2-550/X3-710/X4-810)(AII X2-250/X3-435/X4-620) CPU, a GTX 275 or GTS 450 and some other basic trim for the price. GT 730 a shit, this 100$ tin can isn't optimally configured.

I always thought Ardouge's GT 730 was dumb. Tim himself championed the Radeon HD 5870 he found for 75$; I know that would've ruined your budget, but was there not, like, a Radeon 5770 or GTS 450 around to fit the budget? They go for like 50$ here in Canada, which I assume would be fine, as the other 50$ was probably just spent on the complete Optiplex, right?

540p is what you are thinking of. Most 360 games render at 540 or 720. 540p used to be for 60fps but now is to do 30 in newer games.

For $120 I got an AMD a8 5600k (with a motherboard and case) for $60, a Radeon HD 7770 2gd5 for $40, I got 4gb of 1333mhz ddr3 for free, a $10 425w psu, and a $10 320gb hard drive. I actually built this about two months ago, since then I've upgraded to 8gb 1866mhz ddr3 ($40) and a 1050ti (gift).
Every part was well worth it and proved that you don't need any money(I sold my 3DS XL to pay for it) to build a gaming PC.

We all used an Xbox 360 at one point. I will never forget the long nights I spent racing in Forza 4 and Horizon, two of the greatest games of all time and only on the Xbox 360. I'm a PC gamer now too, but you can't deny the 360 is one of the greatest gaming machines of all time.

The PC would surprisingly win by a landslide under 2 circumstances:
1. $50 budget increase
2. Extreme dedication to building it.
Linus Tech Tips built a very good PC for $150 by scraping together various parts from old server computers.
Be warned, however, that this was no simple task, as many problems arised to be solved.
Linus was consistent in solving these, but it won't be like building another PC.
You are comparing $150 to literally $49, obviously the pc will win, you are spending 3x as much. This 100 dollar pc to xbox360 was already unfair and the xbox360 still won against a pc that costs double.
. . . Except in this instance, team XBox paid "just under" $100 in what ever currency his country is in (I live in the US, and I am not sure whether Green Ham is here or in the UK.

bleh bleh True but I don't know why he paid 100 dollars for a 360, unless he bought it new or the elite/slim or whatever, but that has zero performance gains, the true cost of a used 360 is around 50-60 bucks and it was put up against a 100 dollar used computer. I'm actually looking on a UK ellectronic site and theres a few used 360's for 40 pounds(53 usd)

The main issue with the PC is that the RAM is only 2 GB. If the budget was extended to $110, I am sure that an extra 2 or 4 GB could be squeezed in, which would help a lot with performance.
I'm so sad rn, i just got BF4 for the xbox 360 and i accidentally dropped the case breaking the singleplayer disc :( i dont have xbox online and the data thing ring is scratched i looked stuff up but didnt find anything.

it's really hard for me to buy games where i live and especially because i rarely get bought any by my parents and i was so friggin sad when i broke the disc, just had finished mission 3 and wanted to take the disc off and it fell :(
take it to a movie rental place like family video or whatever, and ask them to resurface it, should fix it perfectly. same thing happened to my gtav disk, and it ran perfectly after $2 of asking the ppl to resurface it.

Microsoft undercuts the cost of an XBox meaning it costs them to make the consoles, the only real money they get is from the games

Anyway, regarding PC vs Console. It's impossible to optimize PC games for all users because everyone has different hardware and even different operating systems. Eventually though, even the low end PCs start to out perform current gen consoles when running the latest games. One game that comes to mind is Farcry 3. It looked much better and ran much smoother on a non-gaming, factory built Dell than it did on the 360 or the PS3. The developers try to give the impression that the console version of their game is keeping up with the PC by capping games at 30FSP and for the most part, people don't notice this because they usually only use the PC for office type tasks or browsing the internet. The console is their only gaming platform. The difference between 60FPS and 30FPS is like night and day when stood side by side. I have a PS4 and a gaming PC attached to the same monitor, I also have "the division" on both systems. After buying and playing the PC version then trying the PS4 version again, I'm surprised at what a stuttering mess the PS4 version is. Not only was it running at 30fps but it even dipped below that at times when the action on the screen intensified.
The last time I bought a console was back in my college days when the Playstation 1 first came out. For a year or so it certainly seemed to outperform the PC until the PC got the first 3DFX cards. Then it was all down hill for the PSX from there.

What the hell? That rig for 100$, the GPU alone is 70$, with the CPU, RAM, HDD, Motherboard, Power Supply (and let's take in consideration you'd have to buy the tower), there's no way that's freaking 100$
Even if the newest games are no longer ported to the XBox 360, the Xbox 360 is still a great purchase because the games for it are not too bad looking, play well, and aren't too old (yet) either. Like Rainbow 6 Vegas 2, or COD.
It makes no sense how Fallout 3 had absolutely no difference between the two and yet they gave the win to PC. Same thing with Bioshock, they colors just looked slightly different. That's pretty biased.
Hey dude it's unfair to compare Battlefield 4! PC runs the "Next Gen" versions of games while the 360 doesn't!
Although I do think that PC's exceed consoles in performance, I do not agree with this experiment. You are using a $100 PC from 2016. The Xbox 360 contains parts from late 2005. As time goes on the cost of hardware goes down. To make things fair, build a PC using parts from the Xbox 360's time.
If you disagree with me then that means that you think a $100 PC from 2005 performs the same as a $100 PC from 2016.

You would probably want to get a 360 if you want to play newer games (Rise of the Tomb Raider looks gorgeous on it somehow), and a PC if you wanted to play older games that were released in the 360s actual lifespan.
PC developers don't make PC games able to run at that bad of hardware anymore, it just doesn't happen. On the 360 version of the game, it's an entirely different game. That snow is probably just a texture in ROTR, where as on PC it's dynamic. They're really two completely different games.
You look at all of the games that were created from 2005-2013 and most if not all run better on PC. That's because they were made during that time period. It's 2016 now and it's just impossible to get games better optimized for PC than for the 360 without the consoles holding it back.
Though a $400 PC would flat out murder the 'next gen' consoles.

You must remember, The PC is a full on PC, and is not only for gaming. If i was going to get the PC for myself, i would get a core 2 quad and a 750ti further down the line.

The only issue is if you want to play anything online on the xbox 360, you have to pay for gold membership.
This is somewhat of an unfair comparison for some games. Minecraft, FO3, and Bioshock Infinite I'm fine with, since it seems like you did justice in their comparison by making both things run as well as they could at a constant framerate. For things like RotTR, you would first want to drop your PC to minimum specs (likely what the XB360 is running) to test the waters there. Then, slowly upgrade your specs until you start getting noticeable frame drops. If you're stuttering from the start, give the XBox a point, since all its games are optimized. But here you're basically asking the PC to perform at higher graphics settings for the same price, and then giving the XBox a point when it can't do that.

Personally I think the $100 PC has a few clear advantages when considering other factors. Gaming wise, the PC has such a larger and more expansive library than the 360 when factoring in low demanding games on Steam and Gog, internet flash and fan games, smooth emulation up to the N64 and maybe even Dreamcast, older pc and DOS titles, games similar to the one's benchmarked in the video, and mods/patches to other games. (not to mention that there is no subscription to play online) Media wise you have every outlet the 360 has (DVD and CD, video/music streaming, MUCH better internet browsing in terms of functionality, Skype, etc) plus benefits like Hulu being free on PC and better storage options and management. While the 360 is limited to just its controller and peripherals, a pc can use almost any 1st or 3rd party peripherals like keyboards/mice, controllers, flash drives, printers, etc just to name a few. That's not without saying that there will be more problems and setting up. If simplicity or newer games is a major factor the 360 wins.

Nice comparison, but an important difference between the 2 is that a PC is not a single purpose machine, and you're probably not going to buy one _just_ for gaming. Lots of people have at least one desktop pc in the house for work or browsing the internet, so for them the comparison would more likely be: how would a $100 *upgrade* compare to buying a 360?
Many gems on 360 are tuned down for the consoles specific hardware. If the 100$ pc was playing the exact same versions of those games, it would clearly win

I got my friend a PC for $90 with an i5 750, GTX 560ti, 4GB ram, and a 500GB HDD. That shit is going toe and toe with the xbox fucking one.
