Very nice. I have the 745 as a secondary/tinker PC, upgraded with a Core 2 Quad (Q6600), 8gb Mushkin RAM, ATi 4850 1gb GPU, 600w PSU and a cheap Kingston SSD. These things are pretty impressive machines. I picked it up a few years ago at Goodwill for next to nothing and don't regret it at all.

Marco Martins Hey i understand you are poor and can not afford a real quad core which is the i5, the i3 has 2 cores and that means dual core and some have hyper threading which means not a real quad even tho windows shows it as such. the i3 2 cores, i5 4 cores, i7 4 cores and 4 hyper threads. And some new games play very badly on a dual core or not at all. Just because it maybe a new i3 does not make it a quad. I understand you think because windows shows it as 4 you think you have 4 cores, people that have little to no idea about computers will think that. And stop trying to defend the i3 its cheap for people that want intel cpu and don't want to buy a AMD cpu, but you would have been better off with a quad core that a dual core hyper threaded cpu. And now you know and knowing if half the battle.

A thrift store near me has a massive bin of ddr2 and ddr3 ram but it's all low clock speed for the ddr3 but u don't have a computer that uses ddr2 so I didn't pay much attention to it

If anyone is still interested, Optiplex 745 (at least in tower form) supports Q6700 and 8 GB of RAM. However, two capacitors on the motherboard do not allow double height VGA card to fit easily, so I had to bind heatsink of GT610 a bit. I also tested it with HD6750, and PSU was able to feed that VGA card through Molex >> PCI-e connector.

Try and aim for something a little better than 7570. If you mean 7870, then that card is just fine. There is no real "good card" for an old PC. Any card you get will be bottlenecked by the CPU. Just grab a Radeon within your price-range and you'll be sought.

Nah I mean old workstation laptops with Nvidia k1000m or k2000m discrete gpus, or any old workstation laptop for that matter. its the PERFECT mobile budget gaming solution.
Mine Has K1000m, cost me 200 dollars, gets 45 frames per second at 768p, i7 cpu with 8 threads, and if you think the nvidia card is shit, you can look up earlier GHTV videos on gaming with the integrated INTEL GPU, or check out Lowspecgamer youtube channel, he built a whole channel around gaming on intel hd 2000 and up, and the work station card in my laptop would wipe the floor with an integrated intel card.
I had a thinkpad 410 with the NVS 3100 and I ran world at war easily 30+ fps depending on settings, have your fill of custom zombies bro :] if you want i could give you a list of good games that would run on it.

I got an optiplex 745 desktop form factor that someone was throwing out. I took it home and installed xp on it as the vista install on it was corrupted and vista is garbage anyway. It's only got a Pentium D in it but I was planning on throwing a corr 2 duo or core 2 quad in it with a decent graphics card for a mid level gaming machine. Any suggestions on a decent low profile gpu?
SMAAAASHTV What is your budget?You van get a low profile R7 250 off of newegg for about $50 with free shipping after rebate so that is not a bad way to go. Would blow the integrated chip away any day. Also, look on ebay for used cards, that can save a ton of cash if you are really limited. Just remember, if this is for a small form factor machine, the power suipply is most likely you limiting factor. Just be sure not to get a card that requires too much power. One last thing, install I would install 7 or at least Vista on it because drivers for a new card on XP will be an issue if you buy a new card. Look on ebay for install DVDs and keys for cheap.

Wow watching these retro machines make me fell like I have an uber PC! My little Q6600 @3.0ghz on a Asus P5Q, 8gb DDR2 ram, and a newer GTX 950 2gb all on Win 7. Suprising how long these system can still game. I have not even thought seriously about doing a complete upgrade until 3rd qtr 2016 or 2017. I have been running this sytem since 2009. Hell my 22" Samsung LCD monitor 226bw is from June of 2007.

I have a Dell 745, it has a 80GB WD HDD with a Intel pentium D & Windows XP. I got it for free from a Business that was upgrading there computers to Newer ones, the good thing is it came with the keyboard, mouse, monitor & speakers. It works fine & I had upgraded it to 2GBs of Ram.
I've got 3 old Dells... My main PC, the Studio 540 C2Q, Radeon R9 270X, 6GB. The XPS 410 C2D, GTX 550TI, 4GB. And finally, the Dimension 3000. P4, 1GB, Unsure of GPU... It's been a while.. But the Studio never fails to impress me. That thing has aged very gracefully..

DDR2 RAM is cheap on eBay. I have gotten an 8 GB kit for $20.

Even if I can assure you by experience, you can overclock the living daylights out of it.
I've maxed mine out and I have no errors at all.
I'm actually planning to get a GT730 as a replacement after my horrendous GT520 got fried.

Dell machine? Runescape music? me in 2006.
I got an optiplex 745 desktop form factor that someone was throwing out. I took it home and installed xp on it as the vista install on it was corrupted and vista is garbage anyway. It's only got a Pentium D in it but I was planning on throwing a corr 2 duo or core 2 quad in it with a decent graphics card for a mid level gaming machine. Any suggestions on a decent low profile gpu?
SMAAAASHTV What is your budget?You van get a low profile R7 250 off of newegg for about $50 with free shipping after rebate so that is not a bad way to go. Would blow the integrated chip away any day. Also, look on ebay for used cards, that can save a ton of cash if you are really limited. Just remember, if this is for a small form factor machine, the power suipply is most likely you limiting factor. Just be sure not to get a card that requires too much power. One last thing, install I would install 7 or at least Vista on it because drivers for a new card on XP will be an issue if you buy a new card. Look on ebay for install DVDs and keys for cheap.
For light gaming look to getting a AMD APU

Jose vazquez Thanks but i'm working on getting this dell going as a light duty gaming machine. The amd apu would not serve any purpose as this computer uses an intel motherboard for socket 775 pentium 4, pentium D and core2 processors.

Why do you need this many computers? If you upgrade 10 computers with Graphic cards costing $100 each, thats like $1000 you could have spendt on something else.

Wow watching these retro machines make me fell like I have an uber PC! My little Q6600 @3.0ghz on a Asus P5Q, 8gb DDR2 ram, and a newer GTX 950 2gb all on Win 7. Suprising how long these system can still game. I have not even thought seriously about doing a complete upgrade until 3rd qtr 2016 or 2017. I have been running this sytem since 2009. Hell my 22" Samsung LCD monitor 226bw is from June of 2007.

I have a Dell 745, it has a 80GB WD HDD with a Intel pentium D & Windows XP. I got it for free from a Business that was upgrading there computers to Newer ones, the good thing is it came with the keyboard, mouse, monitor & speakers. It works fine & I had upgraded it to 2GBs of Ram.

I've got 3 old Dells... My main PC, the Studio 540 C2Q, Radeon R9 270X, 6GB. The XPS 410 C2D, GTX 550TI, 4GB. And finally, the Dimension 3000. P4, 1GB, Unsure of GPU... It's been a while.. But the Studio never fails to impress me. That thing has aged very gracefully..
I am an American and but yet still am obligated to watching the legendary Doctor Who series. Sadly it's only available through Amazon Prime or Instant video.
