Aren Racyil RAM and a GPU are important. The CPU isn't really incredibly important unless you really want to play games like GTA V for the PC that use your CPU more than anything.

I had a Dell Dimension 4600 back in high school, and I remember the shocking performance difference when i upgraded from 512MB to 1024MB of RAM. That combined with an AGP graphics card allowed me to play HL2 on acceptable graphics settings at a good frame rate. It's too bad they chose not to include an AGP slot on your motherboard, that would have made a far bigger impact on the framerates.
Hello fellow 4600 owner! I agree, it really stinks that the 2000 series didn't have an agp slot. Though, it at least comes with a floppy drive as a consolation prize.

I had a old 2350.. I popped in a newer P4 (I think 2.8 Ghz) processor, upped to 2GB of RAM and was able to find a decent graphics adapter.. It ran Windows 7 and did everything I needed it to do quite well for the time. :D No swelling cap issue on mine, thankfully

My Pentium 4 was overclocked at 5ghz. Phase Cooling was in it. That thing was a beast for almost anything that was single-thread/duo-threaded intensive.
RAM can help a little with speed, but most of the difference is in multitasking, or having multiple programs open at once. The jump from 2 to 4 gigs on my laptop made a big difference when I was doing multiple things at once.
actually it depends cause integrated graphics eats up some system ram thus why if you get a modern computer and it has 16 gigs of ram and you up it to 32 in some cases it will increase it's performance but overclocking the gpu and ram speed makes more of a difference all the time not just where the ram limit is slowing things down a bit
I found a RAM upgrade to make a considerable difference in some of my newest games. For example it almost stopped Fallout 4 and XCOM 2 from getting long periods of freezing. But to be fair my 8GB of RAM were running at 97-100% usage constantly, so raising the cap actually made a decent difference. I'd assume that unless the RAM is being maxed out, adding more RAM would make no difference though.
I had a dell like that. It was an early 3 ghz machine and I believe I got late 2001/early 2002. I still know who owns it in fact. I've been wanting to get it back and see if I can modify it.
The lovely thing about Halo on the 945GL graphics? Shaders didn't work! The vertex shader version on the 945GL was too low for Halo, so everyone came out in a very plain white. Love that multiplayer with all the space-age white Master Chiefs running around!
The GeForce 6200 is an affordable option for around 35-50 AUD, and when paired with an okay P4 and a gig or 2 of ram, its pretty smooth in lighter games, and sure as hell better than the iGPU
dimension 8400 is my first PC. it had 1gb RAM to come with eventually upgraded it to 2gb saw major difference in performance not only in games but in speed of the computer.
i had a few of these dell dimension 2400's. i liked the look of them so much I took one scrapped out the old parts and put in a newer Inspiron 560 motherboard with a Core 2 Quad Q9550 (2.83GHz 1333FSB 12mb cache) 2x2GB Corsair XMS3 DDR3 1333MHz, EVGA Super Clocked Geforce 660 GTX 2GB, Crucial M4 64GB SSD + 2x WD VelociRaptor 500GB soft raid 0, running Windows 10. This thing KICKS! Metro Last Light Very High settings, Bioshock 3 Ultra settings, and every other game i have on steam (Optimus420) High settings. The only game I play it struggles with is Hawken on medium to high settings and that could be because it's kind of still under development and not fully optimized. I painted the light gray front bezel red and the inside black and added some carbon fiber vinyl inside the case. I also cut out the round dell logo to put in a large 200mm fan.

I had a terrible "AMD sempron 2100+" 1GHz PC with integrated graphics and 256MB of DDR2 RAM as my first PC, I played through the whole of Portal 1 with choppy visuals and stuttery audio - but goddamn did I still love it!
Adding/changing any part can improve a performance, if you know what to swap/add. Understanding what is your system's bottleneck is key. If it's memory - then surely adding it will improve things. If your system is undeprowered for required tasks in every department...well, I guess it's time to build something from scratch)
For somethings Ram could really help. My dad had a laptop with a okay Cpu, and 2gb of ram. It was incredibly slow and froze all the time. So I installed 4gb of ram on his laptop and now it's buttery smooth. He only browse the net and writes documents but it's really incredible what adding ram can do.
It depends on the starting ram and what the other components are, seeing where the bottleneck is for a particular task. Going from 128mb to 512mb would have been an improvement on that rig. Heck, going from 512mb to 1GB probably helped with tasks like web browsing and whatnot. I remember my college Latitude D800 came with 512 and ran Halo and CS without issue. Some later games became choppy and around the time TH-cam was established it got choppy. Upgrading to 1GB helped out. Years later, swapping the stock 4200rpm drive to a 5400rpm drive even gave it some extra pep. The ram and hdd upgrades allowed my dad to use it for web browsing and small tasks until 2 years ago when I bought him a new laptop. I may even ask for my Dell back to have on hand for old XP needs. So this video was a fun look and proves that something like adding ram isn't a universal truth... but it far from proves that adding ram wouldn't help (with gaming or otherwise).

I painted the light gray front bezel red and the inside black and added some carbon fiber vinyl inside the case. I also cut out the round dell logo to put in a large 200mm fan.

The motherboard seems to have an AGP slot, but it's connecting/slot part isn't present/soldered.

The amount of RAM you have feels completely inconsequential until you run out. Then it all grinds to a halt.
My dad put 4GB RAM in our Dell, which is the same model as this. It can actually play 1080p Videos on TH-cam, but the Pentium 4 seriously holds it back still.

I had a dell dimension 2400 (1 gig of ram) and I brings back memories. I then bought a dimension 3000 (same specs)
I had a terrible "AMD sempron 2100+" 1GHz PC with integrated graphics and 256MB of DDR2 RAM as my first PC, I played through the whole of Portal 1 with choppy visuals and stuttery audio - but goddamn did I still love it!

Adding/changing any part can improve a performance, if you know what to swap/add. Understanding what is your system's bottleneck is key. If it's memory - then surely adding it will improve things. If your system is undeprowered for required tasks in every department...well, I guess it's time to build something from scratch)
For somethings Ram could really help. My dad had a laptop with a okay Cpu, and 2gb of ram. It was incredibly slow and froze all the time. So I installed 4gb of ram on his laptop and now it's buttery smooth. He only browse the net and writes documents but it's really incredible what adding ram can do.
It depends on the starting ram and what the other components are, seeing where the bottleneck is for a particular task. Going from 128mb to 512mb would have been an improvement on that rig. Heck, going from 512mb to 1GB probably helped with tasks like web browsing and whatnot. I remember my college Latitude D800 came with 512 and ran Halo and CS without issue. Some later games became choppy and around the time TH-cam was established it got choppy. Upgrading to 1GB helped out. Years later, swapping the stock 4200rpm drive to a 5400rpm drive even gave it some extra pep. The ram and hdd upgrades allowed my dad to use it for web browsing and small tasks until 2 years ago when I bought him a new laptop. I may even ask for my Dell back to have on hand for old XP needs. So this video was a fun look and proves that something like adding ram isn't a universal truth... but it far from proves that adding ram wouldn't help (with gaming or otherwise).
Adding ram will yes improve a lot! But not such old machines like you did here...
