I’m not as strict with jeans because styles change even if the similar styles return but I totally agree with most of these preferences. The only thing I’m a stickler about is the shape since I’m petite and have to choose the shape more carefully-ie: not too flared, not too wide, not too high rise, etc.
I really like a bootcut or flare jean. They always look good on every figure and seem to elongate the legs. I am also a fan of a midrise or low-ish rise waist. I really dislike the high rise jeans now. I used to wear Levis 501, but they aren't quite the same anymore with all the stretch. Still a good look on the back pocket/butt.
Thank you. That was so useful for a 54 year old. It’s so easy to get completely wrong at my age. I have a pair of 501s from the first time they were fashionable. Vintage like me 😂
I agree with just about everything you said except the arch/balloon jeans. I’m quite skinny and those pants make me look like I have no figure. 😮 that’s just me though. 😊
Erin Busbee had good recommendations on choosing denim albeit for 40s plus women and she agreed with no whiskering (the horizontal lines along the hips) but she explained why - extra horizontal lines, whether via whiskering or unnecessary pockets, adds a line to break up the outfit and will also make you look wider. So if you want to look sleek and give an illusion of narrower, one trick is to avoid extra horizontal lines 😉
Another trick to look for is the size, closeness, and even angle of the back pockets because they will affect how your hind end looks. Small and wide they will make you appear larger, bigger and closer together they will make you look smaller. So the pockets really matter in the back too. I avoid some Levi's because they make the back pockets so wide and it makes me look huge. Just a tip 😉
I agree with everything you said. Unfortunately, here in the U.S. wide leg cropped slacks are coming into fashion. Just a glimpse of ankle. But I am not going there. I will just wait this one out until everyone comes to their senses and this style passes. LOL! Thank you, Lydia.
Jeggings are for toddlers. Agree with all of this, except perhaps the always wear jeans long. TBH this does feel modern and of the moment, so I think you are correct to say it looks "cooler" to be a little puddly. But as a 5' 3" woman I find a jean that ends at the ankle can be more traditionally flattering. Although 100 agree that "cropped" jeans really only look good on a few body shapes.
Thank you so much for educating us with your content. You’ve saved me from impulse shopping so many times and also inspired me to find my authentic style ❤
Lydia, I agree with all your choices of jeans. The only thing is do they apply to petite people like the joggers or wide leg. Most of the models shown are tall so the jeans look fine if they are long on them but what about a petite person could that make them look shorter. Thank you for all the various jean suggestions! 😊❤️
I agree with all the jeans you highlighted to avoid. Jeans are one of the most difficult items for me to buy as they are so difficult to look really flattering. I personally prefer a classic Jean- the simpler, the better.
Honestly that is true for most (almost all?) of us. Truth is, there are so many options that are designed for a wide variety of body types combined with a tendency to be very trendy that at any given time you have to sift through a lot of denim noise. Especially if you are shopping mainstream stores.
Thanks for what to buy! I’m always looking for good jeans. I do not agree however with the contrast stitching 🧵 I love dark blue jeans 👖 with light tan stitching , looks so classic and refined (in my opinion) 🥰
Thank you for doing this! I didn't even know I needed it until you did it! There are so many styles out there that it gets confusing as to what you like or should like. I'm seeing a lot of the embellished and coated jeans and I'm thinking should I like these and get a pair. Just because they're selling them doesn't mean I should buy them. This video was super helpful to maintain a classic style and to narrow down what you need to add to your closet.

Yes, avoid buying all those swerve styles but if they are all you own then just pair them with a classy white blouse, ballet flats and a nice pair of earrings lol 😉 😘
Yes, it’s been a useful video Lydia since I’ve worn about 3/4 of the jeans from your avoid list!! I could tell you about a real pair of horrors that I wore in the early noughties 😆 I’ve never worn ripped jeans though. To me they look like they’ve been run over by a lawnmower.
So needed! I find jeans the hardest thing to buy. To get the right length, colour and style, I end up trying on hundreds before I doin the perfect pair 😊
I've got the really dark wash wide leg cargo jeans from M&S and I think that they're really smart and elevated. I think the dark wash and wide leg make them smart. They're quite a stiff, structured tailored cut too. And the cargo pockets just give them a moden twist. But I do think that the pockets have to be flush to the leg. I don't like the pockets that actually have a base so that they sag and bag out from the jeans.
I love your content. I agree with everything that you mentioned that you don’t like back when they were doing jegging I would go in the men’s department.. buy Levi’s/found a couple really good ones. The best part is they actually have pockets u can put stuff in/can’t stand stretchy jeans there’s no point in my opinion
I tried sooo many jeans styles over the years. The once I stuck with and are very flattering are Levi 501 in various lengths, and the arch jeans. So, no more searching for me.
Great video. Couldn't agree more on the cropped length for jeans or pants and especially on the wide leg. I have yet to see anybody who really looks good in this style. Also that jegging pant was not good when it first came out and probably never will be. Ripped jeans a definite no here and looks like they are not as popular this year. I always hear "wear what you like", but sometimes we all need to step back and take a second look.
I have always liked Levi's 501 jeans too. If you look close, they can remind you of Mom Jeans, with the tapered leg which I like. Interesting how Mom Jeans where not so hot a while back and now they seem to be making a come back in some form with other jean styles. I still like jeggings because they look great to me with boots and booties.
I don't like those brown jeans those yo me look dirty. However, I have one pair with side pocket and I wore them with a white shirt and a belt how you suggest in your videos and I got lots of compliments on how cute they looked. But I agree we must be very careful when buying jeans..

When it comes to jeans I recently opt for straight leg jeans ( I can recommend jeans Lee Carol they are straight legged, high waised and they are vey similiar to the Levis 501 which I also want to get maybe in a wite or creme color). Additionally I really like wearing mom jeans I have got one pair from Topshop. I am a petite woman and I think wide leg/barrel jeand can overwhelm me. From time to time I wear skinny jeans and I have a pair of ripped jeans wioch I try to get rid of by selling them (I do not know whart forced me to buy them)
thank you very much, Lydia for a very nice and useful video! I would advise against Levi´s 501 jeans though. I owned 2 pairs of them and the quliaty isn´t really good for the price tag. I love the barrel jeans. Stunning design as they wee originally round 1980. I am a deep autumn with pale skin, so the all the mid to pale washed out jeans look chap, weak and pathetic on me. Same on my fah wih white hair and strong tan. Pale wash on you Lydia is soft and lovely. Please do jeans on your mum. I have medically induced asthma and had 17 years on steroids. Previously I was very slim, about your height and a 32A bra at 40 and always looked model like so everything I put on looked wonderful. So now women say I am not fat but my waist is above the standard for my medium to small hips. I bought clean black H&M Jeans straight with 4% stretch stuff so even the waistband stretches whilst a normal cut. This works but the great jeans are pure cotton.
Super helpful video! I completely agree with the avoid jeans… but I am guilty of buying the contrast stitching. Was feeling unsure about them and could not explain why 😮 I will return them after this video ahahah 😅
How about the Sezane LeCrop jeans?? They are wide but cropped going in your "avoid" column. But I love them and think they are actually quite popular. Although now I am afraid I may change my mind.
The avoid pairs were quite obvious to me, none of them I would ever wear. I'm also planning to get 501 but don't know what lenght to go for cos I've got wider hips

I like classic tan/orange stitching, but I watch out for overly contrasty whiskering on the hip area and too bright buttons (copper, bright silver, etc.) also in denim jackets, as they're a bit like jewellery and can make an outfit look too busy
Exactly. I prefer that cut and fabric to all else. But the tiny waist courtesy kindly doctors and 17 years steroids after medically caused asthma prevents me.

Gaping waist is actually an easy fix that most seamstresses know how to fix OR if you own a sewing machine search TH-cam 'How to Alter A Waist On Jeans', purchase the proper notions (sewing machine needle for denim, polyester blend thread etc.) for a perfect fit.
@@sestricaanutka : Just shared the info in event you (or others) weren't aware that waistbands can be altered. As to the pricing increase, like anything else I guess it depends upon where you live.
Hi Lydia, would it be possible that you can do a video of styling jeans with boots? Been styling skinny/slim jeans with boots all my life and having a hard time to do it with straight/wide legs/etc... sometimes I would wonder does it even work? love this episode, by the way. Thank you!
I agree with the ones to avoid but paper bag are very dependent on body shape/height. I’m 5ft 3in with a short torso so no real waist and these look hideous on me. Also I feel the barrel leg will be cringed at in the same way as jeggings in the future.
Look into COS. Lydia also owns a white pair of barrel jeans from COS. There are other colors too. I also saw many other styles from Mother jeans and Agolde jeans. I love Mother and Agolde!
The older I get the more I'm convinced that trends are irrelevant. If you find styles that suit you best then invest in good quality items in those styles and stick with them. That way you will always look elegant and stylish (and you can always buy small accessory items that are on trend to refresh your look)
Agree with you in all the Avoids EXCEPT for the contrast stitches! 🧵 I like those actually. Two-toned washing is recently popular among stylish twenties in my country, Korea. Black jeans with light grey washing or grey jeans with yellow tone washing. Not my style but if it’s not too much, it’s growing on me!
Totally agree apart from jeggings, I love them! Can tuck them into boots to walk the dog, more flattering for your bum than leggings because of the pockets, I even have riding jeggings with a sticky seat 😂
I strive to become as polished and put together as you ☺️❤️ your videos help me a lot with styling pieces I already have and what to buy when I need new stuff
To summarise: jeans are a basic, therefore keep them basic (and classic). BTW I heard a French stylist say you should always avoid distressed jeans because this ages your jeans before their time. (This appealed to my budget conscious soul). I do like jeggings for travel tho. I won't take jeans on holidays anymore, but jeggings are more lightweight (but thicker, therefore warmer, than tights - I'm thinking winter travel). They also take up less space. Just make more sense
I say the same thing to my boys as your grandfather, paying for ripped jeans feels like paying for trash. I told them go to good will and get cheap ones and rip them yourself!
One of the comments below says "can we make capris illegal". My question is "can we make leggings illegal?" Is this a covid lockdown look? If you're not a teenager or in yoga class, it needs to be covered up, even if it's jeggings!
I wish I had seen this video sooner. I bought a jean with cargo pockets last month. Wore them once and knew it was a mistake. Now, straight to charity shop!
Please do a video styling your mom!! It would be great to do a capsule wardrobe and then add some modern looks to her wardrobe in another one. Please?
Yes, I need looks from Lydia on over 60 and 70 wanting to hide a stomach area, what do we wear. I’m size 12/14

Thanks Lydia, that was really useful. Would love a “what jeans to wear with what footwear” video!
I like your recommendations.
For my curvy body type though a paper bag waist is not a good choice. Also the 501 do not work, I prefer the ribcage.
I recently tried on the barrel style jean, and I was surprised how flattering they looked on me😊 I now have a black pair and pale blue denim.

That way you will always look elegant and stylish (and you can always buy small accessory items that are on trend to refresh your look)
Hola, guapa. Gracias por compartir.
Podrías recrear videíto con looks con corbata, por fa . Gracias
Loved this video!
You shoud try Agolde Jeans.
Hello, i love your vídeos, Is it possível To show the exact reference of the jeans? When we go To the Store its soo dificult To choose the right ones
This was a much-needed video for probably everybody. Thank you so much.
Hello Lydia, do you do videos for older women? I have been watching for few months your videos it looks like only for young women, thank you.
Well she is young herself. There are many other TH-camrs who are older.
i know she is young .... i wanted ideas from her and not from you@@Clleonie
Thank you so much, dear Lydia, for the very helpful summary of the jeans styles! I just bought the 501s and they are really nice and timeless….👍🏽🥰🫶
Great video with good advice too
Just wanted to make you aware of poor customer service from Flattered. I will never order anything from them again.
I say the same thing to my boys as your grandfather, paying for ripped jeans feels like paying for trash. I told them go to good will and get cheap ones and rip them yourself!
Thank you Lydia, you are my fashion bible
Love you are from Manchester too 💖
One of the comments below says "can we make capris illegal". My question is "can we make leggings illegal?" Is this a covid lockdown look? If you're not a teenager or in yoga class, it needs to be covered up, even if it's jeggings!
Can you tell me, what Kind of Watch do you wear, It’s so nice 😍
Can we make capri's illegal?
My shape does not suit a high rise/waist and it’s really tricky to find decent mid rise jeans 😕
You looked like you were literally in pain discussing a few of these 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 I love it 😻
I wish I had seen this video sooner. I bought a jean with cargo pockets last month. Wore them once and knew it was a mistake. Now, straight to charity shop!
How about a video on styling cropped jackets.
Beautiful and useful ❤thanks
