Fun fact about Dannil Lewin: In AMOL we see him pondering about how different his life would've been if he'd joined the Emond's Field Five. Brandon learned of Dannil's original arc from Jordan's notes and this was his subtle nod to what could have been

It was a good scene, showing how an outsider could both want and not want to be in the Ta'verens' position. Noting that while they are wild and amazing and awesome... the shit they had to go through to harden themselves from young boys into these legends wasn't something anyone should want to go through. Fantastic dual purpose scene of giving you perspective and also honoring Dannil's original character before Robert Jordan changed it.

    • @CNNBlackmailSupport
      @CNNBlackmailSupport 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

@@THX-bz8bi no, it isn't. Unless knowing Dannil lives is a spoiler. I don't think he is mentioned again. The line is specifically meant to reference Dannil not making the cut, so it's more of an easter egg for the sake of a neat reference and not a plot point.

Have you ever looked at the influence of the Arthurian legends on WOT?
    Main protagonist/hero - Rand Al’Thor (Arthur)
Sword of power - Callandor (Excalibur)
    Wise wizard - Moraine (Merlin)
    Lan (Lancelot)
    Egwene Al’vere (Guinevere)
    Nynaeve (Nimue)
    Caemlyn (Camelot)
    Gawyn (Gawain)
    Galad (Galahad) Damodred (Mordred)
    Gareth Bryne (Sir Gareth)
    Artur Paendrag (Uther Pendragon)
    Tar Valon (Avalon)
Rand drawing callandor has many similarities to the sword in the stone.
The story of Sir Percival retrieving Excalibur from a clan of mysterious faery creatures has strong comparisons to Mat getting his ashanderai, and Arthurian legends say that Excalibur’s scabbard had magical properties that stopped the wearer being touched, like Mat’s amulet.
The great hunt for the horn could be compared to the hunt for the grail.

I wish the books had leaned more towards sci-fi though, the Dark One being an alien would have been awesome!
I did get the feeling, when reading the books, that Jordan kind of wanted to go this way when he included the dreams/memories of the world with skyscrapers and airplanes, etc. It's almost like he wanted to include this "world", but didn't want to drift away from the fantasy aspect of the series.
I was also disappointed that none of the "inventions" ever had a big part to play in the series, or were never advanced even more, like the steam powered vehicles.
And that we never really got to see/read about the lands in the east.
But maybe that was half the fun of it, leaving so much stuff for the reader to imagine for themselves afterwards.

In the same boat here. I am now 100 pages in The Dragon Reborn, where I read the other two over the past year in between other books. At the end of each of the previous two books I was hyped for the next one, only for that hype to die out quickly into the next book.
I guess I am just waiting for anyone to actually do anything, rather than have circumstance thrust them into action, especially with a concept like ta'veren. For example, Rand meeting Morgase only happens because Rand decided to go out and then climb that wall. However, most other events are just our protagonists being forced to head in a certain direction, be it through enemies, allies or vague writings, only to deal with whatever they find there.

@@DudeWheresMyJo-Car True, but I think the idea of Egwene going through her arc off her own merits and development gives a lot more weight to her story.
It would also be a plot complication to have a Ta'veren in such a high position of power as she attains, as that might be a moral contradiction to the values she promotes when she's fighting in the White Tower. Where the 3 boys are sort of village folk who stumble along in the beginning and the Ta'veren-ness is used to add mystery and tie everything together, I think if Egwene was Ta'veren, here character would try to utilize it more as a tool more often which I think would damage the gravity and struggle of her story.

@@Echidna23Gaming I understand that you feel giving Egwene the Ta'veren luck mode cheat code would undermine her accomplishments. Normally, I would agree that plot armor gives less weight to a character's choices and actions, but I think WoT is different because this is already baked into the way the WoT world works. Since I don't discount Rand, Mat, Perrin, or Lews Therin's accolades for being Ta'veren, then I couldn't discount Egwene her accomplishments had she been Ta'veren too.

Also, I love that Robert Jordan was still willing to write the story HE wanted. As the author he saw an alternate theory and he wrote with it. I personally enjoy that Graendal killed Asmodean. This allowed Brando to make her such a dangerous and well written villain in the later books rather than Lanfear Lite.

Eh, Shara was out of left field, but Taim as Demandred is literally the first thing anyone who reads it will think. It is so obvious it would be stupid to stick with. I mean, they are the same fucking guy, down to the looks and jaw clench.
Taim earned his rank, and Demandred was the practical effects version of the man Taim was only a pencil sketch of. The part where Taim realizes Demandred is nuts is awesome, because it parallels historical warfare. Taim is essentially the Ghengis Khan, to Demandred's Darius/Alexander. Both incredibly dangerous powers, but one maintains the veneer of honor while fielding a completely dominant army, while the other one could not care less about honor because he is all about winning.
      To understand what Taim represents...
Imagine, if you will, a soldier in a city guard that has spent countless hours perfecting his battle skills in preparation for an attacker of roughly the same type of force. He is faster than anyone with his sword, spear, and shield. He is bigger and stronger than everyone else. He can fight for hours without rest... and then Khan rolls up with some fuckers shooting arrows from horses. Can't beat the range of the bow, and even if you could, EVERY TARGET is moving, and horses are too fast to catch with melee weapons. Imagine the realization that occurs when you are staring at the business end of a lost arms race. He doesn't have a chance to even fight back a little. Complete domination from the start.
Taim brings the single most deadly force on the evil side, with most of the Black Tower and almost half of the white tower. He is, however, a one trick pony.
Macedonia became a power because of weapon technology as well, but in a different way. Traditional battle units and formations were used, with a single devastating modification. The Macedonians used 3-5 feet of wood to become unstoppable in a bid for one of the single most impactful "duh... why didn't I think of that" moments in history. The 3 to 5 feet of wood was placed between the head of a spear and the person holding it, extending the spear's range. Thats right. Their big idea was basically "what if we had longer spears than the other guys?" The answer, as it turns out, is "We can kill them before they can kill us."
Despite their incredibly effective spear modification, they still saw battles like a boxing match. Two opponents step into the ring and fight like men until one is knocked out. Sure, it was the equivalent of a 300lb body builder against a blind junkie, but it was an honest battle. If the junkie chooses to get in the ring, they should know what to expect.
Demandred has no problem using his entire army against forces that never had a chance of winning. To him, a larger and more powerful army is just proper planning and preparation. It isn't his fault if you didn't prepare, so he isn't going to show any mercy. He uses tactics and formations that put both armies into pitched melee battles, because it favors his army of monsters and Sharan's. He wants to dominate the battlefield more than he wants to kill specific people. Killing Rand isn't good enough. He needs to annihilate and break Rand's forces to prove he is better in some way. Three personal duels and dueling armies wouldn't work without Demandred having a massive advantage. The Sharans are the massive advantage.

I can't agree. The appearance of Demandred with Sakarnen, the Sharans *and* a full ring of 72 brought the whole idea of the last battle to an entirely new level! Tarmon Gai'don made the war in Lord of the Rings look like a border scirmish, and I've always been a big Tolkien fan. The last book must be a whole season of it's own or don't bother.
Besides, Demandred could be shown having dealings in the Westlands, leading people to speculate that he is Taim, only to find out otherwise when Taim is presented as a new Dreadlord in his own right and Demandred's arrival would confirm it. They could even make Demandred Asmodean's killer it the show. It would be a good tease for the book readers who think they know the answer.

I think losing either one would be a very serious loss to both book fans and tv viewers . Egwene needs to be shown as the hero she becomes and we need to see that Lan is truely the best, not only because of his skill, but his willingness to do whatever it takes to get the job done.
