I saw this way back in the day and immediately became very impressed by Jamie; such a natural, working a busy holiday shift and yet describing it all so effortlessly to the camera.

Remarkable influence this restaurant and its aesthetic has had on the way we eat and prepare food. Such incredible women who fostered so many careers in cooking and in food production . This program is nearly 30 years old and it's still fresh!

i used to wash dishes there just a few months before jamie started. theo, the guy preparing the pork, was really cool, but i guess he was too busy for the camera. it was great working there. never ate so well in my life. laugh.

I read (can't find the link anymore) that the special was supposed to feature Theo and be a springboard for him but the tv people really fell for Jamie Oliver.

I trained for kitchen work with some of the best chefs in our city and we were encouraged to continue either by going to culinary school or doing apprenticeships but I didn’t like the fast and rushed pace and decided I just want to bake. Still learning how to bake and has perfected some pies and cakes but I still have lots to learn. Food industry is so fascinating and rewarding but not for me. I’ll just watch shows on tv 😅

Can definatley see where Jamie got his style of cooking from and his Italy inspiration from

Interesting that this was a BBC programme, yet the two River Cafe cookery series were made by Channel 4.

I think the burning question is, did Priscilla Presley turn up for her dinner reservation?.

The difference between a French and Italian brigade is really obvious. No f-words and fired chef de partie or waiters during the whole clip :).

So...why did this shoot off Jamie Olivers career..? I mean...he comes off like a good bloke and all but...he's not THAT entertaining, is he..? Or funny. Nevertheless, I'm glad it shot off his career.

+MrStensnask Maybe not on camera, but he caught the eye of production team, I think he was just different than the rest of them.

Are you kidding me. He just a natural entertainer. Nearly fell asleep when the other chefs talked. I'm not saying he was the best chef in that kitchen, but it#s just the way he talks about the stuff he does

I agree!!! Jamie Oliver is the reason I became a professional chef and enjoyed many years in London's restaurants, hotels and gastropubs.
I knew I had found someone special when I saw the first episode of "The Naked Chef" back in 1999. It hit me like a ton of bricks and I knew that's what I wanted to do. 18 years later, and I still can't let go of the VHS tapes that I used to record EVERY episode ever made of that series!!

The TV people have an eye for such, potensial stars. They see a bit more from the appearence than the common folk in the street

@@TheNZTchannel Also not forgetting the producers and editors at the BBC probably saw lots more unused footage of Jamie that didn't make the final cut. That sort of stuff sticks in peoples minds.

As beautiful as the food looks, from the remarks of Ruth and Rose, about sourcing the ingredients, lots of stuff flown in on airplanes, truffles and what not, then trucks from the airport, tremendous carbon footprint for these Michelin star places in London, NY, Paris, etc. In the present environment, that may have to change for the next 10 to 20 years, I'm afraid.
