I’m finding this bike rather interesting. Never thought too much about this bike although I knew it was out. Because of your test ride Mark, I think I may go have a look at it at my local dealer. Thanks!
Great review Mark, probably the best real world bike reviewer on TH-cam. Thorough without being over technical and always with an honest opinion of a biker rather than a journalist or mechanic. Well done and thank you, will certainly give many food for thought.
Now I do like the look of this, and I'm quite surprised how reasonably it is priced. I also commend you on this review. Best review I have seen on one of these types of bikes...
I am sorry, reasonably priced? 11.5K for 69PS in a 225kg bike is reasonable? I get it. It's a new technology. But what immidiate benefits does it offer to the rider? Where is your investment going? Budget forks, budget brakes in a budget bike but plaster "hybrid" on the side and you can sell it for a premium. I have no idea who is this bike for. Maybe it's a proof of concept.
@DeeoMaika give it time, other big bike companies will almost certainly start producing similar bikes to compete with Kawasaki & the prices will hopefully come down by then..
Not a fan of electric but I'd certainly check this one out, it looks very interesting and well put together. The lack of foot gearing and clutch might take some getting used to as that's part of the charm of riding.
Strange and interesting. That boost button will get well used. Hard to keep in mind it is basically a 450 and an electric bike all in one. Nice review, the price needs to drop somewhat though.
This review really surprised me. I can see real potential for a 750cc version as the basis of a touring bike, with the performance of a 1000cc and boost for overtaking when loaded up with passenger/luggage. The economy and EV mode would be so good when riding through built up areas.
When you look at that particular car going by at 19:02 lol, that’s basically what this bike is - a two wheeled version of a Toyota CH-R … which incidentally is the car I currently drive! I like this self-charging system on my four wheeled motorcar, however on a motorcycle for me at least it’s just not inspiring me much, I just don’t think this is the way forward for us bikers, unless of course it was used purely for commuting to and from work, and or as a 2nd runaround bike. Think I’ll be sticking to petrol only for as long as I possibly can, preferably with 100+ horsepower..👍🏻
Not really that into sport bikes in general, but this is intriguing. I like the no clutch change gears with your fingers thing. That appeals to me a lot. Think I'm going to arrange a test ride for myself to see how i like it.
Interesting review. I have a hybrid car that is the best of both worlds. Very economical but also plenty of power. However, I don't see the point of this bike. On a 125 mile ride I got 76mpg from my KTM 790 Duke the other day and I was still having fun in places. The KTM will handle far better, is considerably lighter and has plenty of power and performance. It also costs considerably less to buy. Fair play to Kawasaki but I can't see this selling.
I agree. The whole point of a hybrid is to reduce petrol consumption, but Kawasaki seem to have demonstrated that is doesn't really work well for bikes because of the excess weight. Why buy this bike that gives about 76mpg, when it costs about twice as much as a Honda CB500 which has a similar size petrol engine that gives more mpg? I've recently been on a 96 miles ride on my CB500F (2023) and according to the trip computer it achieved 101mpg.
Great review Mark, can't argue with the concept of running ev through towns etc (works great in my partner's Toyota), price as expected is a bit off putting, but anything with a 'boost' button will attract a premium haha
Kawa should put that drive train into a maxi scooter style - tmax or forza 750 competitor. Might make more sense to most people. That (complex) transmission seems quite useful for heavy commuting/easy touring
Great review as always Mark. Living in a dense residential area in England and leaving for work at 4am, this makes a lot of sense for me. What worries me is pulling away with in electric and then engaging a cold engine to accelerate away. Thoughts?
@@markpulling12 Thanks for the reply mate. I meant that I always run my bike for a little while to warm the engine before pulling away. If I use the electric from a cold start, the engine hasn't even been turned on yet. So I'll be accelerating on what is essentially a cold unstarted engine.
These things are so much fun. Theyre to expensive for what you get, the shifting is a little difficult at times, but ill be damned if it isnt one of the most fun bikes ive rode, the 3 ride modes is an awesome feature too
You beat me to it Mark. I have been waiting for it to come into Bournemouth Kawasaki for months and just received the email to say it was in last week. Very keen to try it myself as I have driven hybrid cars for a decade.
My thoughts at the beginning of your great review were "too much tech and its a bit of a lump" my thoughts at the end were "hmm wouldn't mind a go on that, would make a fantastic commuter" thanks Mark, very interesting bike and certainly clever stuff.
I like the principle but would prefer pure electric power but with a dedicated battery charging (range-extender type) engine. In other words, a bigger battery and a smaller engine.
So they decided to pull a Toyota ? Looking forward to this one, just curious how it's like against a full electric bike and a full ICE counterpart. This might be a decent stopgap (environmentally) until we figure out some to solve the carbon emissions problem. I don't believe in full electric as a ICE replacement. I think hydrogen and/or synthetic fuels are the way forward. People talk about how one or the other is going to be the future, why not all of them and let the market choose ?
Very interested in how this technology develops over the next 24 months. Needs to be a drop in price. Will we see this in slightly bigger bikes? Electric mode is perfect for 20’s, 30’s & 40’s town speed limits. Come on Triumph get on board with this technology. In principle I absolutely love this.. 😊
I think this power train would be perfect for a Maxi Scooter. But not all people like that riding position. We all know that soon some city centers will band all ICE engines and will go EV only. So this bike will be a good option for people who commute from the out of town to city centers. No engine heat just twist and go through traffic. And on the way back you got your sport mode for a bit of fun and your weekend trips. No long waits with charging times because the bike charges itself. All in all a good idea. If they can get the price down to sub 9k pounds it will sell.
I like it. But.... I need one essential fix. Return the Manual Gear controls back to the left foot even by signal and give it some physical click feedback and they've got a winner. I also think this would also go well with an even smaller Single Cyl engine.
They went the early hybrid car route and made it look weird. At least the hybrid cars do it for aerodynamics, in this case its just weird for no particular reason.
Mind boggling to start with, but I bet it becomes 'normal' quite quickly 🎉, interesting concept, better than full electric for us who still like a proper engine...🥳. Pricey though 😊... Well done mark for your bravery and a very clear review 🎉🎉 x
Excellent and comprehensive review Mark 👍. Looks to be a fascinating concept, geared toward someone who commutes from outside of the city into more congested town traffic. My only gripe would be; Given the price point, and the weight, it would have been nice to see upside down forks and radial mounted front brakes 🤔.

PS always a great review.
I don't think EV motorcycles will ever get there. EV cars are just about passable now but they cost a lot and weight 2.4 tonnes. But do cost 2p a mile. Who wants a bike the size of a gold wing that costs as much as a 3 series bmw car. Just to do less than a £2k used motorcycle.
@@chrishart8548 g'day, your spot on with your comment, in Australia we have the lowest take up of EV ownership in the western world and that because Australians won't be conned into buying into something that won't perform and costs more that what they are use too, we don't want to go backwards, alternative fuels are a must, hydrogen use is building up and looks to be a better option, sorry about the rant, cheers mate, Neil 🤠.
Not sure how the insurance works where you live, but in Finland it's the total power (kW) that matters the most. This bike should be around 52kW which is almost the same as 650 Versys.
This bike gearing makes absolutely no sense, why force a button to change gears it should just have an automatic setting like Honda or just stick with the foot peg switch gearing that’s more natural for riders you shouldn’t have to Fluff about doing e boost to get the best performance and should be in hybrid mode all the time but right now it’s basically the 450 most of the time which is a real shame it’s too gamer than biker setup for its own good
Climate change is one of the biggest lies of all time. The only reason the weather is going crazy is because governments are manipulating it to scare us into more taxes and less freedom. It's obvious if you look up...
In principle a nice little bike, but i wouldnt buy it, stupid pillion seat and no grab rails, drop style narrow bars. The mrs wouldnt go near it and neither will I . Its not a sports bike kawasaki!
I don't like the sound of 'hybrid' anything. It adds unnecessary technology and implies other things, which I am not going to go into for fear of being ghosted by TH-cam. I am about to buy a car in Thailand and will be buying a diesel. As a matter of principle.
A mild hybrid cars doesn't really cause many issues. If its a diesel with a dpf or with add blue I'm not going near it. Probably don't want an EGR valve either
@@user-sw2lv3zp6o Yea, well in mild hybrid cars the electric motor simply operates the stop start (no starter motor) and a bit of boost to the engine, in a full hybrid (like the Kawasaki) it's extends to driving the wheels also.
I must admit im really blown away by this bike , love the hybrid idea behind this .

How long until i can buy a used one for under 10k
Hi they will hold their value well so I would say at least a year
Cheers mark
does it shift automatically like the Honda DCT?
@@daveruff47 only in electric not petrol mode...but it down shifts automatically in petrol mode
Would it be classed as a 450cc insurance wise?
Not sure how the insurance works where you live, but in Finland it's the total power (kW) that matters the most.
This bike should be around 52kW which is almost the same as 650 Versys.
@@senraXD I the UK it goes by CC but not sure with the add battery power
Way too underpowered and not that practical for any long distance, ok for commute or short hops
Does it have an auto mode?
It's auto in electric mode 😁
Sorry, but that is just too much techno...I hate this.
This bike gearing makes absolutely no sense, why force a button to change gears it should just have an automatic setting like Honda or just stick with the foot peg switch gearing that’s more natural for riders you shouldn’t have to Fluff about doing e boost to get the best performance and should be in hybrid mode all the time but right now it’s basically the 450 most of the time which is a real shame it’s too gamer than biker setup for its own good
No thanks, solving a trouble that doesn’t exist is not my thing🤣
Like a ninja 400 with a ninja 1000 price tag
Luddite!
Climate change is one of the biggest lies of all time. The only reason the weather is going crazy is because governments are manipulating it to scare us into more taxes and less freedom. It's obvious if you look up...
Very impressive bike, but that's a lot of money for pointless tech.
Every car / bike is a hybrid, you use an electric motor to start an internal combustion engine . Hybrid progress is just an extension of this.
@@Grahamvfr Some extension.
@@user-sw2lv3zp6o Yea, well in mild hybrid cars the electric motor simply operates the stop start (no starter motor) and a bit of boost to the engine, in a full hybrid (like the Kawasaki) it's extends to driving the wheels also.
