This could very well be one of the VERY best performances of street band EVER....this is ABSOLUTELY a musical and visual marriage made in heaven. PROUD to have had a chance to teach at Arcadia and be friends with Forbes and Landes.
This was my junior year. Our drum major was Bob Exeter. I'll never get tired of watching this video. The "Pa-chee" still gives me the chills almost 30 years later.
Reading your comment just made my day. I was in that bock that day and to know that Landes used this as inspiration for future generations is just awesome. So proud to have been part of such a great tradition. Baritone , class of '84
AHS class of '01 and still playing. I remember Mr. Landes used to show us this video as inspiration the week of Chino. He always played it twice. The first time without sound so we could watch the feet, ranks, and diaganols. And the second with the music. It just blew my mind every time I watched it and we always brought our A game even after our 11 year sweeps streak got snapped by Mt. Carmel(booo). I am so proud to have been a part of this great band. They're still keeping our tradition alive.
No matter where you marched, this band is tight. Arcadia was a legend! They were "the" street band to beat. So musically sound....amazing. Great work if you were in the band!
I can't believe I found this video ! I was there that day! . I had three awesome years with AHS marching band , and from the Australia trip to the Rose Parade to the 1981 World Series between the Dodgers and the Yankees , it was the greatest thrill to be a part of it. When I see the grid passing under the camera , and see how every rank and step is right on , I remember how we worked our asses off to make it that way. Tom Landes , YOU ROCK!
I was class of 95! My senior year in the band, we added the "freshmen" class and the band really grew, but still not as big as the current size! Poway was still the biggest back then. I also love the old Arcadia Princess headdresses...all the way to the ground. Go Mr. Landes!
Thanks for posting this, baribigbird! This is a real nostalgia trip--the late great Long Beach band review. Not to mention the "marching graph paper" and huge sound of the Arcadia Apache Marching Band.
Wow, the marching in this video is damn near perfect and of course that patented Arcadia sound is great! Whatever Tom Landes does sure seems to work and works consistently too!
I remember we had to play the march twice because it was too short, and didn't get us out of the competition area before it was over. It would be great to see a video of 1981. I believe they played Rifle Regiment, or even 1982 to hear the modified Stars and Stripes arrangement.
LISTEN TO THE FREAKIN' LOW BRASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HOLY BEJEEEEEEEEBERS!!!!!!! This has absolutely got LEGEND written all over it!!!!! Not to mention diagonals....SECONDARY diagonals.....((thunk!!!)) I faint....
Good lord, they took "Shrewsbury Fair" amazingly fast, haha. A bit too fast for my tastes, but still, WOW. Taking that huge block into competition, just crazy. Marching was impeccable!
I noticed that tempo too. As the years progressed, i noticed that most bands began to stick closer to the 120 bpm to keep from getting penalties. But i noticed that Vista High was probably the last to keep their tempo above 120. Then again in the 70's and 80's, there were also a few groups who were right around the 112 tempo too.
On Apr 3,2008, we had the Arcadia HS Spring Concert at AHS' North Gym, and I met a woman who was played a flute in the 1982 AHS band. Her daughter is a freshman in the AHS Apache band, under that same teacher Tom Landes.
there was nothing like long beach. and arcadia was legendary. the band i was with could never beat these guys. we could come close on the music, but their marching scores were, as you can see, near perfect.
Arcadia hasn't lost its touch! After retiring the West Arcadia Trophy, and becoming the Host Band for years (how long ago was that?? :-) It is fun to catch up on my alma mater and see that the band is just as good (probably better!!) than when I attended! Arcadia probably has the best program by far.... S. Deal 76'
holy crap... now i see why my section leader tells me to watch this..cuz its freakin good...o yea we almost got a perfect score at mt carmel last week. we got a 197 out of 200. its like almost 1982 all over again but 2008 style hehehe :)
Jesus freaking Christ -______-" yeah, that was definitely, absolutely flawless. it'll take 50 more rank rehearsals to get three fourths to being that perfect.
I am sorry, but I don't know the woman's name because I didn't think to ask her, but if I run into again, I sure will. I was walking out of the concert when I noticed her twin boys, and made a comment how cute they were(they were both asleep with their dad), and asked here what she thought about the concert. And she mentioned that she played the flute in the AHS band in 1982, and that her daughter is a freshman and is also playing the flute in the band. She is a caucasian. I am asian.
Sound is really unrefined and out of tune. Its why they didnt win music that year. They always marched well. Its everything else. Magnolia went undefeated that year on the street and had to use everyone in their band. This band used less than half and upperclassmen and still lost to a band from C class. That is what makes what they did amazing. They took 150 on the field and and competed with 300. Dont take away from the hard work that band did.

Damn.... 35 years and still the same roll-off......... Transitions don't just fade away...

This is truly amazing. I may currently compete against Arcadia in Band Reviews, but this is just absolutely amazing! Great job guys!

I was in that group as an auxiliary and WOW!!! Amazing!!!
I keep coming back to this video. It never fails to send chills down my spine. It's so exciting!
it literally sent chills down my spine...

they sound HUGE. And by that I mean 3 times their size. and that says a lot. This is what parade band is ALL about

"Wait.... a high school?" -Yep.

This video makes my heart flutter. Especially the last strain. What a band!

@houserehab after 1980 ... it has definately had its up and downs. I was in it from '77-'80 - awesome times for the band. Great experience.,
i wish we were like that now. i think im gonna go insane
HECKYEAH!!
and people wonder why I'm such a band snob.
I'M AN APACHE! THAT'S WHY!!!
AMEN!
Do you have the Magnolia performance at this angle?
great performance
but I played in Castle Park Trojan Brigade (Sweepstakes for small schools) winners that very same year

P. Taylor Baritone , who are you? You must have been a T-Bone if you marched front rank.
THIS is what parade band is all about. Parade haters take note. It CAN, and does, get exciting
IM SPEECHLESS
