  • A teardown and repair of the JBL Flip 3 portable bluetooth speaker.
    I repair a broken USB charging plug and show you how!
    The USB socket I used was from ebay. Just search for 'micro USB 4 vertical legs' and you'll see the parts.

    It's great to have people who are passionate about repairing gadgets, especially in today's culture of disposable electronics. I just got a brand new Flip 3 and stumbled upon this video. Nice, clear and interesting even to someone like me who doesn't do repairs.

    Thank you very much for posting this. The tip on how to remove the outer cloth cover was great, down hill from there! My son left ours in a cooler full of water and it was no longer working. Of course it had water in it after disassembling, but after hitting the control board with some electronic cleaner and some air, it turns on and appears to work properly! I'm going to leave it disassembled for a couple of days so the main area dries out, but there appears to be a reasonable chance that it's saved. Our model is newer and slightly different, but close enough that this was still extremely helpful.

    Hey there, mate. You have no idea how thankful I am that you've got this video for me to find and watch! I exclusively purchased two of these Jbl Flip 3 not even a year ago through the biggest apple store here at the country I currently live. After 4 months or so when my guarantee period had already ended, I started to struggle to properly charge the speakers because of the connector--- its teeth were gradually getting damaged. I use many devices at home and they all have the same or similar charger , so I never really care which one corresponds to which. They all seem to charge all, plus I was told that it didn't matter, so I was good. Point is, after both charging connector were just too ruined to ever charge again, I took them to several places for them to be repaired, but most of them said that they couldn't do anything, and that this device is recycling to be used once and so I needed to buy new ones as last and only alternative... Now this video of yours I'll shut them up for being useless technicians to even try to find out the solution to this small problem. I'll be buying the USB charging on ebay for replacement and then I'll be taking the speakers to the stores again for evidence and demonstration very soon . Cheers!

      Hey I have Jbl charge 3 and when I was charging it and pulling the charger out the micro usb teeth broke. Do you think what warranty can change it or is it like sort of my mistake and I will need to pay money for repair:) Waiting for answer. Hope to hear from you soon :)))

      it' will be a common problem with charge 3 because of rubber cover, which presses down a usb cable. It would be wise to pushing it down with scotch tape or another kind. But I also just bending out the cover and prop up a speaker on it.

Turned out to be the 1R5 block on the board, it was completely broken off but no further damage. When I pushed it back in place, tada sound was back. Bit of superglue and problem solved!

    yay, you are my hero. I have a UK version of the JBL 3 and it has less screws. only the four at the ends mainly for what i needed to sort.
    the clip on grill has a slot clip one end and two clips the other.
    My issue is my on/off button stopped working and i assumed the clicky button had worn out.
    I soon found the cause, they had used hot melt glue inside the speaker and during the unusually hot weather recently in the UK had melted this hot melt and it had run down and over the on/off button.
    once the heat died down the button no longer worked.
    All i had to do was carve off the now solid hot melt and clicky works again. , reassembled and happy.

      @Bobo-ox7fj 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bit late for this comment, but this advice applies to anyone that's not too confident in soldering. Use high heat, and leaded solder. Use more solder than you think you need. Always apply heat and solder to the part directly, do not apply solder to the iron except initially to aid heat transfer, and again after you clean the tip. Keep heating times as low as possible, without creating cold joints (malformed or very little gloss). Apply extra flux if you like, and always use solder with a flux core, rosin, not acid flux. If the finished joint has black specks, you've cooked the flux, reduce heat a little and try to be faster. Wipe the board down with an electronics/flux cleaner after you're finished.

    Very useful instruction. I had the same problem but built an alternative solution. Instead of replacing the micro USB connector I rebuilt the existing Line-in connector to a "Power in" port. If you connect a 3.5 mm jack to the USB cable, be sure to use a 3 way jack and leave the middle contact unused to prevent short circuit when plugging in the jack.
    Yes, you loose the audio-in port, but I never use it anyway.

    • @haroldpalmer3245
      @haroldpalmer3245 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Frank Zandee, can you please go into detail on how to do your alternative solution please. I'm with you, I never use the audio IN. I like your idea, you would never have to mess with it again. Thank you for the post.

    • @frankzandee7021
      @frankzandee7021 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Harold, I followed the instruction video from NFM but I found it very difficult to get loose the white 4 pin connector (power) and the white 3 pin connector (audio-in) without damaging the lanes on the print.
      In the end I managed. Next I used a multi-meter to measure which pin of the audio-in connector on the print connects to the tip of a plugged in 3.5mm jack and which pin to the base of the 3.5mm jack.
      Next I soldered two wires on the identified contacts of the line-in connector on the print and connected the two wires to the red and black wire on the 4 pin white connector.
      I left the original 3 pin white connector loose as it has no purpose anymore. You can also leave the original 4 pin white connector loose since it now connects via the two wires to the print. Then I put back the print in the original position and reassembled the unit. As a last step I soldered a 3.5mm jack to a USB cable. Make sure that you connect the tip of the 3.5mm jack to + and the base to -
      Hope this helps.

    Finding a professional with the expertise to do this would involve paying them for at least an hour of their time which would be more costly than the item being repaired. On the other hand, if an amateur is willing to take maybe two or three hours of their own time....and they have more time than money and are sufficiently skilled, talented, and motivated.......then that's great. Of course, all of these situations could be totally avoided if the plug was initially designed to be idiot-proof so you could not accidentally repeatedly put it in backward. Your friend is lucky to have you. On the other hand, 3/4 of a million people have viewed this, I suspect/hope you will have been well compensated. : )

    If it's under a year old and it's a legitimate JBL product you can actually call Harman kardon now and give them a certain identification number that they will ask you for and with no questions asked they will send you a brand new speaker end a container and shipping label for return shipping on the defective unit. My turnaround time looks like 6 days they were surprisingly easy deal with regarding the manufacturer's warranty

    Ordered a replacement part, was all good and with you until soldering became involved. Goddamn it JBL. I have 2 of these things and the port on both of them is shot.

    The passive radiators and speakers pop out when the speaker is left outside because the air inside the unit is heating up and expanding. Since the speaker is sealed it prevents the inside air from equalizing with the outside air. JBL should maybe Incorporate some kind or pressure relief valve into future units.
    I own a flip 3 in black. It's probably the best sounding BT speaker I've owned to date, I don't intend to leave mine out in the sun or anything, but the issue with the unit being affected like that has possibly been corrected since most videos talking about it are from last year.

      I have 2 JBL Flip 3 speakers and I love them! Unfortunately, I left one in the trunk of my car and the one of the speakers now has the distortion problem. Hopefully I can fix it because I really liked using them as a pair for outdoor activities
