    Stian, again this video is so enjoyable. I learn a lot by listening to your commentary and watching carefully. I think anyone who has looked closely at your on-line store (which all should) will get a great idea of your eclectic taste in watches. Keep up the good work.

    I love your collection. I don’t care how wonderful the movement is in most Rolex watches - as far as I’m concerned, most of them are “flashy trash”. Their outsides do not reflect their insides. I don’t travel in those circles so I don’t know for sure, but I suspect that a lot of the people who buy them might also fall into the “flashy trash” category. Just an opinion, of course. I do enjoy your commentary; you provide a lot of education in an accessible and interesting format. Thank you! Any chance you’re likely to have an A. Lange watch on your channel?

    The UG is cool and the movement makes it even better. The Longines has a nice and unusual case. First time I see one like this. I had a good opinion on Seikos GS but the green one rocks!!! The faceted crystal gives it a very 70’s look! I think the extra-fort comes from the stiffnesses of the cases made by Eberhard. On gold watches was uncommon during the 50’s. Nice collection!

    • @VintageWatchServices
      @VintageWatchServices  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, Henrique, great insight and the Extra-Fort 👍
      That GS61 is a stunner for sure and pretty obviously from the 70's, yes, but what a watch 😍
      That Florentine case on the Longines is indeed pretty unique and that's why I like it. Not everyone's taste for sure, but that's alright.

    All exceedingly gorgeous pieces Stian, though I think my favourties are the Grand Seikos. There's something uncommon about their unadorned excellence... there's nothing ostentatious or pretentious in their quality and precision. For me, Seiko stands quietly as a marque of excellence that doesn't need to be extravagant or conspicuous - internally or externally. I find that rather appealing. Thanks for both of your show-and-tell videos. And for all your engaging, entertaining and educational videos which I've enjoyed since I discovered your channel.

    You have a superb collection, and one which must have cost more than a few Euros to amass. May I present an opinion? I think you do these class watches a discredit by wearing them so close to the back of your hand (in these displays at least). I think a prestige dress watch ought to be worn above the ulnar styloid on your wrist (Google?), because it is firm and unmovable up and down at that spot. I wouldn't dream of wearing that JLC L30 or the Omega De Ville so close to the hand. What do other viewers think?

    • @VintageWatchServices

    I recently bought a jewelry chest with nests for twelve watches, only four of them are occupied; a Seiko flight computer, a mechanical Orient Star and two Invicta's. I'd like to get more into higher-end mechanical watches, at least to fill up the chest. One nest is reserved for a Sugess tourbillon, (I don't feel like paying six-figures for a Swiss one) the other seven nests are open. What's a good source for elite watches like these (please, not eBay) and what might I pay for them?

    • @VintageWatchServices
      @VintageWatchServices  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Caledon, the best online source is eBay! 😂 That's where you have the biggest selection and where you can typically make the best buys, but it's also the most perilous place. Catawiki is a similarly dangerous place, and there are also a lot of forums where they sell watches, e.g on Watchuseek. Forum watches are mostly safer buys if they are offered by long term members. And lastly, Chrono24 is probably the safest place to buy and where you will find the most serious sellers, but it's also the most expensive given the safeguards they offer. Offline, iIf you have flea markets where you live you might be able to make some incredible bargains at those.
      There is a clear value to cost correlation for watches online, and most of the time you will be much happier with a watch that costs a bit more than a similar one, especially if the seller is someone you feel you can trust. It's a common saying that you should "buy the seller", and that holds true on any platform. You're much more likely to do a good buy if you buy from someone with a stellar reputation, but you still need to do your research on the watch you're interested in.

    you said in the video that you have a strong feeling for seiko. the brand has a special place in my heart too, because the first watch i realy blindly fell in love with, a long time ago, was a seiko. it is "only" a quarz watch, but i would love to hear your opinion about it, since i have the impression this type is completely forgotten today. i was a teenage boy, laying in hospital and reading magazines to pass the time, when i saw the advertisement of the seiko windrose (i'm from germany, i don't know how it was named in other areas.) that was a watch unlike anything i had seen so far., the houres hand turnes the dial once in 24 houres and there are two minute hands at a 180 degree angle, that turn the dial in two houres each, since the dial has a 120 minutes scale. everything is at half speed with this watch. and i still think it is still a stunningly beautifull watch. i begged my parents to empty my sparbuch and lend me the rest of the money and buy this watch... and probably since i was in hospital they did it. it took me a while to be able to read the dial, but then it became second nature. the watch still runs fine today and i still use her on and of. have you heard of this seikos?

    Hi, my name is Clay. I too belong to Subdials Anonymous. I love subdials. I don't time anything, I just respect all that work to mechanically count things accurately. Very nice collection, Stian. I'm sure it will change a fair bit as time wears on. I might have to add a green dial, faceted crystal Grand Seiko to my collection sometime. Any love for Oris?

      @VintageWatchServices  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      😂 No one actually times anything with their chronographs, so you're in good company! I have actually tried finding an Oris for a while on and off but still haven't gotten any. They have made a lot of nice watches though, so I'll get my hands on one sooner or later.

    I count stairs too. Accountant here. Lol! Love the Compax. You do like the chronographs! Great watches!
    Can you please do a vid on the Zephyr? I love them. Been looking for one to buy.

      Hello fellow step counter! It's apparently a form of OCD to count stuff, but for an accountant I can see the upside 😂
      I like chronographs for sure, and looking at these videos I also realize I have no square-ish or tonneau pieces in my collection. I certainly prefer round watches but don't mind me a TV shaped one, for instance. But collections are dynamic things, so who knows :)
      And yes, I'll do a video on the Zephyr soon. They're probably the most beautiful watches Rolex ever made and quite un-Rolexy

    Love what you do, great sense of humor also. Question, what type (name) are your brass tweezers, I'd like to get a pair. Thank you, can't wait for more!!

      Thanks Gary! The tweezers I use are from Regine Horology and I buy them from Beco-technic.com. Horotec makes some relatively similar ones with a sharp bend instead of a curve.

    Hi Stian looking forward to you servicing the landeron 248. I've sorted the chrono stopping on my Rodania the minute counter finger had a little to much tension on it. Now working great. Keep well from New Zealand.

    Great watches you have there. Still, I am missing a moon phase in all of these. Also, there is no perpetual, nor even a year calendar watch in your offerings. Why? I have bought a chronograph (Georges Claude with moon phase), a Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Thin Perpetual and very recently a Sugess Tourbillon, because I could not afford a Swiss made one. All I am missing in great complications is a minute repeater. Why do you not feature any of the great complications on your channel? Nor do - by the way - any of your colleagues.

    • @VintageWatchServices
      @VintageWatchServices  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for that and nice watches you have! I don't miss a moon phase, as I simply do not like them that much. It's all about personal preferences, this is after all a collection of watches I like, it's not supposed to be representative of all complications or varieties. There are for instance also no German watches in my collection, nor any square or tonneau shaped ones. And that's of course since I prefer round watches.
      When it comes to great complications, there's a very simple reason they are not in my collection; cost. A perpetual calendar will set you back at least 25k and a minute repeater much more. Unless you have a looooot of money, you're not going to have a big collection at that level. I'd rather have a multitude of watches that add up to the same amount as only one or two watches. Plus I'm into vintage watches as you might have noticed 😉
      For the channel; I actually did buy a broken minute repeater pocket watch that I will try to make run again. It's a pretty big mess with broken parts here and there, which is what made it affordable in the first place. Hopefully that will be successful and a good video.
      For newer watches with these complications; they are again very expensive and the owners of them simply send them back to the store they bought them in for servicing. People who can afford a 6 figure watch aren't shopping around for having it serviced, they just pay whatever the store asks. And those stores do not make TH-cam videos :) Most watchmakers wouldn't want to work on a 100K watch anyway if they don't have the training for it and sometimes the specialized equipment necessary.

    You have a lovely collection of watches, i am building mine up i have 13, 7 of which i got from ebay, they came cheaper because they needed servicing and fixing, love doing that though, your watches are really nice.

      Thanks Dave, and that's how I built my collection also :) eBay is of course the biggest marketplace for watches, it can just be tricky and dangerous to buy good stuff there. I'm making a video on this subject very shortly.

    Hi Stian,
    How incredibly lucky we viewers are , once upon a time we all used library's and books to indulge in the beauty of Horology and mechanical engineering, of course we still have that but , now not only do we get to see a watch maker talk us through step by step , History , workings complications , Servicing , what to do and what not to do and with a great sense of humour ( which we all enjoy ) , and now we are privy to his personal collection.
    Thanks for sharing what You enjoy so we can enjoy ...
    Service which ever suits you , We will All be there.
    That De ville . Wow ❤️

    Most nice Stian! You have some truly unique and tasteful pieces. A lot of nice chronograph’s like that last Omega and the Universal Geneve. I found the Rolex quite nice too, never seen one before. It reminds me of an early Cellini, too bad someone tried to learn case refinishing on it.
    I was surprised to learn that you hadn’t been trained as a watchmaker from childhood, your knowledge of the different brands and caliber’s as well as the players in the business seems so vast. I really appreciate you sharing it with us (along with your humor). And seeing your collection was a treat. Can’t wait to see some of the services you mentioned.
    Take care.

      Thanks so much, Randy! I loved watches from quite early on but only got serious about it some 15 years ago and went full time only a few years ago. But the passion was always there as you might hear from how I talk about watches 😁

    I really like the long ones.what I really is enjoy what some people call the "off brands" many of the most interesting quality watches I have owned are not commonly known,but they have great history and they are the company's that made the innovations that are sought after now! Thank you again sir!

    Wonderful Collection once again, This time my favourite is the florentine mystery dial Longines I love that Florentine look. Second is the Mirexal. I see a lot of this brand on Willhaben here in Austria, listening to your comments I will now look at them in a different light, thank you.

      Hello Ian, that's very cool to hear! The Florentine finish is quite special and I think a lot of people might find it too fancy, but it is very cool as a dress watch. And Mirexal must be the coolest store brand ever! 😎

    Love the GS Seiko but then I love all watches in your collection. I would be interested on your thoughts of the timex brand being as it’s an old maker and oft over looked. P.S I am an Omaga fan and own a Genevieve

    • @VintageWatchServices
      @VintageWatchServices  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Clive, that's an interesting question indeed! Timex was actually quite famous in Norway for a while in the 1990s after a Norwegian businessman bought the company, but before that I had hardly heard of them. The reason for that is that Timex focused on so-called dollar watches, nice enough looking watches which were intended for running until they didn't, at which point you would throw them away and buy a new one. They were thus not intended to be serviced.
      You'll see this of you every try to take one apart, they are very cheaply made, using cone pivots for instance, which work alright for some time before they wear too much to provide reliable timekeeping. You'll see a lot of watchmakers refusing to service them because of all this.
      I think the relaunched Marlin looks great though!

    • @VintageWatchServices
      @VintageWatchServices  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I hope I didn't sound demeaning to the brand, they made some very nice looking watches but their internals were typically cheap and not meant to last. Very similar to the pin pallet watch I serviced, just even a tad bit less refined 😉

      Shame on you! 😠 Now sit and fish! Seiko's are not for everyone for sure, but that just makes more of them for us who like them :)
      The Mirexal will come up before Christmas if all goes well but the Longines will probably have to wait a bit. There are a lot of watches in the pipeline so I'll see exactly which ones get finished first, depending on when I get various parts for them. But plenty of nice watches coming up!
