    talking about your plastic bags was interesting. years ago i used 4 inch square pieces of thin aluminium stapled loosely to the tree above the trap.had great success with it. keep those videos coming,they extra good.

      Back in the early 60's in the New Zealand Forest Service, I used those old foil milk bottle tops on a bit of string. Made hundreds of them and they worked perfectly.....

    Kia ora bro, yeah in the army we called the shelter a hootchie. Using map to ground navigation was what we did all the time, no walking ridgelines, tracks, streams etc. Sidling along hills was always easier (except for the wee gulleys between spur lines). Great info mate, good to see

    You've certainly got them possums sussed with their nightly movements, I used to do skins decades ago mostly by cyaniding them (and some trapping), but i never knew that about their movements

    Awesome! That is the way. Keep it up. The forest, the animals, the land is all natural. We don't want poison introduced into our area to kill everything off just so the people who own 1080 get rich. Send them bankrupt I say. You have terrific ideas which can be taught even to children. I know because I have been possuming as a child with my brother who used to sell the pelts.

    • @kameron.w4089
      @kameron.w4089 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thats the possum industry bro, They are a pest in nz so we kill them and sell their fur.

    • @FreeRange1234
      @FreeRange1234 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@kameron.w4089 thanks for the reply, I have since watched more of these videos and understand now. I had never seen this form of fur harvesting before. Here in the USA we skin them, we don't pull the fur off like this. Very cool, I didn't even know you could do that. I wonder if it's just this kind of possum or if the possum we have here can be plucked like this?

    • @kieranh2005
      @kieranh2005 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's the kind of possum. Our ones (Australian brush-tailed opossum, introduced to NZ and now a forest destroying pest animal) have hollow fibres in the fur, so it's extra warm, especially when its mixed with merino wool.
      We do sometimes skin, but on a time for money basis, is usually better to pluck. If you've got a run of big, especially dark, animals, skinning might be the go.
      Back when I was trapping (doing it on weekends), I timed it at two minutes from spotting the animal in the trap to walking away with the possum killed, plucked, trap reset and re-baited.
      It takes me at least that long just to skin the damn things.

    Why do you pull. The fur out instead of skinning

    • @kieranh2005
      @kieranh2005 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's a lot less work, and the grade of the skin doesn't matter. You can get one that's been torn up in a fight, and the skins worthless. But the fur is still worth the same, and you can't see what the skin is like until you've skinned it.
      The fur is a soft, hollow fibre, and its extra warm for its weight. Mixed with merino wool it makes really nice warm clothes

    • @kieranh2005
      @kieranh2005 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you get money for the fur (~$100/kg, 17-20 animals/kg last time I did it, dependent on animal size and time of year, winter = more fur)
      Not really much else to trap here. We've got rabbits, hares and several breeds of wallaby, but none of the fur is really worth much.

      @@kieranh2005 Back in the late 1970,s trapped and poisoned for dried skins that were send to Dalgety,s Auctions in Dunedin , 100 skins could average $12.50 each a week from lake Waikeremona bush ,never been able to make that much money legally since .

    I live in Miami Florida where the alligator hunters use white paper plates attached to the baits they hang for the gators which is usually a couple feet above the water. The white plate resembles a baby white egret. The parents make the nests that is usually above the water and when the fletchlings start to test their wings they sometimes fall to either the water or a lower branch. The gators know from experience somehting white blowing around in the tree usually marks an egrets nest.
