I'm a diehard lifelong Madrid fan. I love Ronaldo for how legendary he has been for my club. My favourite player is zidane. I always said that if Messi is as great that they say that he is, he should win the world cup. He's won the world cup. Credit due . He's the best we've had. Let it rest.

Quite laughable how Pele always gets credited with being the only player to win three world cups, yet people ignore that in 62 Brazil were able to win it without him, after he got injured in the second game and missed the rest of the tournament. Not to mention, while he obviously played at a time where he wasn't protected by refs like players are now, he was up against opponents who were far more inferior to what Messi faces in his era. I know it's down to opinion, yet I think it's clear as crystal Messi is the greatest ever to play the game. His ability, consistency and longevity make that obvious.

Tactics have evolved to the point that pressing and countering have become an art form. Maradona was fouled a lot but don't exaggerate. There is only so much a human body can take before injuries. Don't watch youtube compilations and go comparing them to messi games. Search for fouls against messi on youtube as well and you'll see he was hacked as well. And finally, giving a free kick to messi at the edge of the area is like gifting him a penalty. Some of those fouls would be welcome.

I watched a video where someone said Messi can't be the greatest cause he didn't win the World Cup at 17. It was extremely funny and hilarious that someone would say a thing like that 😂. Messi's bar has always been moved to crazy territories over the years, it isn't strange to see it happen here as well.
Maradona had to deal with hard tackles etc. But Messis era has better tactics, more fitter and more atheltic defenders, better nutrition for defenders, in maradonas time elite players would drink alcohol at half time, they weren't as fit or athletic. Nowadays there are super athletes like van dijk etc.

Attacking players nowadays are better protected, allowing them to play more freely. It's no coincidence that in the past 15 years, we've started to see more players score close to 40+ goals per season on a regular basis (Messi, C. Ronaldo, Lewandowski, Mbappe, Haaland, Suarez, Salah). That was a rarity during the 70's, 80's and 90's.
Maradona didn't have the work ethic to be able to have a career anywhere near Messi's level in terms of longevity during the 80's.... he wouldn't stand a chance against the competition today for that reason alone. People still clinging to Maradona as the GOAT are completely disregarding one aspect of Messi's career that makes him the GOAT and that is sustained brilliance. Something that requires insane work ethic. Something Maradona simply did not have.

I think those under 35 will only see Messi, as the GOAT. They dont have a true understanding of football from another era. Also the only people who can give you a true comparison are those who have goosebumps from both.
I think Messi was made for modern football and mastered it, he stands high above all others. Certainly CR7. However in the 80s Messi would have not survived, the brutal tackles, the churned pitches and his small body would not have worked. He’s a footballer for this era, even the injections he had would not have been available back then. However Maradona would have been exceptional in both eras. Today with VAR, tackling laws, carpet pitches and training methods, Maradona would have been a beast. An untouchable monster. Especially if a club controlled him did not allow him to spend nights on drug fuelled binges and then come straight to elite level games.
So my point is pound for pound Maradona is the GOAT, based on achievement and career span it’s Messi.
You nailed it .Messi does not survive the 80s for me .His injections wouldn’t have worked properly and nobody would know him .He would have been way smaller and weaker .As for Maradona .If he brang his strength in this day and age with referees protection he would be unstoppable.On this argument Maradona is the better player competing in both periods of time .
Maradona was incredible, but Messi has been at an unmatched level for virtually 15 years, while Diego did it for around half that time. Not to mention, he was never the frequent goalscorer Messi is. Also, Messi has shone at several international tournaments, while he's just had an even better world cup at 35 than Maradona had in his prime. I know there will always be a debate, but Messi in my opinion is out on his own.
You should factor in the fact that Diego unfortunately was a drug addict! Nobody mentions that in the comment section! And he still had the career that he had! Plus, he defenses were way more physical back then! Andoni Goikoetxea the 'Butcher of Bilbao' once broke Diego Maradona's ankle! Further evidence to that, is what happened to Marco Van Basten! Italian defenders would virtually physically assault him, so he was already brittle, and then a physician put the final nail in the coffin, and Marco Van Basten had to retire at just 28!

That's very wrong, I'm sure that Messi played at least 10 games at a higher level than Maradona in his carrer but these matches were not that popular. Also, in today's footbal is harder to drible past everyone because Getafe's defense is much better than England defense back then. So it's not just the dribling, sometimes you need to pass the ball and Messi is also superior in this aspect. The only area were Maradona was at the same level as Messi is dribling. But stats aside, you do have to admit that Maradona with the ball was pure magic. His control was like nothing that came before him, or after him...until Messi. Brazilian Ronaldo was great, too, but his prime didn't last very long. I think that in general, what makes Messi so special is the fact that his 'prime' lasted for well over a decade. Can't really say much about Pele. My first world cup was 1978, never really saw him play. My only experience with him was seeing him with the NY Cosmos already at the end of his career. Just didn't have much of an impact on me like Maradona and Messi.

Messi is the greatest, stats, longevity say it…..but Maradona in 86 have the greatest individual World Cup performance ever seen. If you see his match to match compilation, the amount of chances he created each game for his team, literally carrying the team and his team were missing sitters aswell. He was getting the ball and making things happen each time, truly incredible plays. And the pitch as the ESPN team are saying, just watch the clips of 86 and see how the ball is jumping up each time as it rolls on the grass due to the bumps etc Maradona was dribbling absolutely ridiculously with a bobbling pitch like that, it is extraordinary. Football like every other sport in the world has a statistic for everything and this helps in measuring achievements. By statistics, Messi is far above Maradona and the World Cup seals it. Pitch conditions and Player aggression must have been terrible in the past but it shouldn't take away from the difficulties of modern football. Nowadays football is more tactical, more competitive and more demanding (because of social media). The Aggressiveness of players haven't changed one bit, Messi has had his fair share of very brutal tackles over the years. I remember watching the Copa America last year and seeing Messi play it with a bleeding leg. The stats say it all and I believe Maradona knew Messi would be great or even greater than him and that's why he said; "I've seen the player who will inherit my place in Argentinian football and his name is Messi".
if Pitch was difficult , then it was difficult for the defenders also. You can't do sliding tackle at 25km/h on rough surfaces. Those time defenders just watch the goal happening. Now a days strikers can't even take one shot at the goal without 3 of them attacking you.

When Messi glided for that header in Rome against Manchester United in 2009 to win the Champions League, that was when the thought of him becoming the greatest footballer ever crept into my mind, ever so slightly. But then he had that majestic run against Real Madrid at the Bernabéu in the 1st leg of the 2011 Champions League semi-final, and it only solidified it for me. And I haven't looked back since then.

Maradona greatest because the impact he had on lives across the globe almost went way beyond football. My grandmother living in Pakistan didn't speak a word of English would sit and watch Argentina play long after Maradona had retired telling us this is Maradona's team. Messi scored 18 goals for Argentina in 14 games in 2022; while Maradona scored 34 goals for Argentina in 91 matches over his entire career. I know being the greatest is much more than just goals; but Messi has taken things to another level. The fact that Claudio Gentile (Italian defender) was still on the pitch after 30 minutes says it all - he intimidated and kicked Maradona out of the game - the genius Maradona had no protection at all. The referee booking the diving was a huge positive as it faciliated that the referee was in control. Di Maria penalty was a bit soft but if it was a mistake VAR would have gotten involved. This generation is undoubtley soft with tackles but I think that advantage is balanced by the technology opposition use to get around tackling. Teams today have departments to watch clips and analyze every actions of a player to come up with tactical counters.
