    Dude!! I just found this same bike on Facebook Marketplace for 500 bucks. The thing is, I'm pretty good at this sort of stuff. He took this bike on a trade-in with the rod knocking like crazy. He tears down the engine, yeah, split the case and for some reason (lack of funds or lost interest) threw everything into two big ass boxes, shook up said boxes for good measure. Took pics of bike enginless from all angles, good rubber, chain looks good, suspension looks good, etc. (didn't include pictures of the two boxes of lose cases, bolts, nuts, (even took the head apart for some reason) a cam here a timing chain there. literally, a basket case! All I know for sure is the bottom end needs work. I'm not sure I want to dive into this gene pool. Thanks for sharing your hard work and expense.
    Cheers from Louisiana.

    Top Tip- Keep a hobby brush or similar brush around for lubing up your engine as you assemble the parts, just dip the brush and paint that oil on instead of fiddling with the cap and getting all oily. Keep up the great work!

      Well said man! A lot of "race engine master mechanics" in here armchair quarterbacking & ragging on the kid but Im happy he's getting his hands dirty and out of his comfort zone. More than you can say for 99% of kids coming up now days. The only way to learn is to make mistakes.

    I like what you're doing bud. But do some studying on the specifics of building these race motors. For example, unless you're just trying to get the most power for one race before you have to shim again, you don't want to be on the tight end of spec when shimming valves, you want to be at the top of spec, also if you are running a 1.50 shim, whoever buys that bike is fucked. The valves have beat themselves deep into the seats and it's time for a valve job. Also when you are checking clearance, the lobes need to be pointed away from one another at top dead center, not vertically, and the cam caps need to be torqued to proper spec before checking clearances at all or you could get a false reading. Source: I've built hundreds of these engines over the last decade.

    That's an automatic cam chain tensioner when you wind it in all you have to do is tap it and it pops and the spring pushes it back out. So wind in and fit thwn tap and it pops to the cam chain guide to the correct tension.

    • @JensEskildsen
      @JensEskildsen 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      He put in way more than 7lbs anyway, he really put a bit of effert into tightening them, same with the caps for the camshafts and the bolt/nuts on the left side on the cylinder.

    I was planning to sell my KTM 525sx today and get a 2003 yz450f. But after seeing this video how to adjust the valves I think i'll pass. It's so much easier to adjust the valves on the 525sx. All you have to do is remove the intake and exhaust cover on the top.. And thats it. You to not have to remove the whole freaking top to adjust the valves. Just leave it on there.
    To see if you're in top dead center you just remove the spark plug, Put a long drinking straw in there and kick the bike with the highest gear until the straw literally ''shoots'' itself in the air. Wiggle the rear wheel a little bit back and fourth to see if the valves are moving. They don't?
    There! Now you have top dead center.
    Now you just grab a 10mm wrench to loose all the four nuts and a 0.12mm feeler gauge. All valves are ''and'' should be 0.12mm.
    It's simple, It's fast and it's alot less parts to look out for. Idk what the f*ck Yamaha was thinking with this engine.

    Oh my word, the amount of abrasive and metal crap left in that engine after removing the shift rod... This is why you don't buy used unless you are prepared to inherit someone else's fantastic incompetence. I am not saying don't buy used just don't buy used if it is a bike you are positive you want to own for your lifetime.

      Yeah, used stuff is a gamble. I'm gonna run a ton of oil through it and drain it and change it a few times, hopefully that will clean it out.
