Yoshi's Story gets unfairly compared to Yoshi's Island when it wasn't even trying to be a direct sequel. I think Yoshi's Story is easily one of the best 2D platformers ever made, especially in an era where most platformers were going for 3D installments. Honestly it ranks right up there with Kirby and the Crystal Shards for me, both games on the N64 that stood against market trends and stuck to their 2D roots, making two of the most memorable titles in those franchises.
I used to be oddly obsessed with Yoshi so I’m far too familiar with too many of these games lol. Have a soft spot for a couple of them. Glad to see this series get attention since it’s pretty interesting.
My parents played the original Yoshi “Tetris” game for hours when it came out in the eary 90s. We lived on a military base in Germany in a super tall apartment, and that was their way of passing the time. Great memories with that one.
one small correction, but in Yoshi's story the number of levels available in a page is dependant on how many big hearts you find in the previous page, so if you find none it's only level 1 of the next page, if you find 1 heart 1 and 2 are open etc.
Yoshi's Story is definitely my favorite Yoshi game. I think its the personality and the atmosphere that really pulls me in. When you've lost most of your Yoshis and instead of the usual Yoshi select screen music the music is just really empty and sad, it just tears at my heart every time.
@@BrickmanZero Obviously I'm not the original commenter, but as someone who would say the exact same thing (Yoshi's Island Number 1, things below that are more fluid), my common contenders for Number 2 are: Donkey Kong Country 2 and Tropical Freeze, Super Metroid and Metroid Prime, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Chrono Trigger, Ori & the Will of the Wisps, Majora's Mask and Link Between Worlds, and Banjo-Tooie.
Great video! I appreciate the more positive outlook on Yoshi's Story and Yoshi's New Island. Those games aren't nearly as bad as most people seem to think.
Completing OG Yoshi’s island literally gives you hidden levels. Idk I love your videos. But I think the reason people think the OG game is the best isn’t that confusing. It’s the fact making a game that good with nothing to go off of goes to show how dominant Nintendo was as a company in the 90’s literally making the best games of many of their franchises to this day with taking so many risks and making crazy decisions (ala dkc’s graphic design, or starfox’s chip, or super fucking Metroid). Yoshis island not only is by far the best yoshi game but arguably one of the best games of all time. I remember watching a dunkey video the other week where a split second slide showed it when he mentioned greatest games ever along w games like halo and others. It def aged that well.
I really like how easygoing and chill your videos are. After I first saw some of your videos they stuck with me somehow but I forgot your name and searched for ages to find your channel again
This video made me subscribe. I learned so much! From Tetris Attack to Yoshi's Story Advance, thank you so much for the time and effort you put into this video. Also I am glad someone else appreciated the hidden black and white yoshis from Yoshi's Story. As a kid those were the ultimate unlocks and felt so cool to use. Stay awesome man, you have a new fan!!!
I remember when I got Yoshi’s Island DS I stayed up all night playing that game. In fact the first time I lost a life was on either world 5 or 6, whichever one had that vertical scrolling section with the falling blocks. It also has my favorite title theme out of the Yoshi games so far.
interesting to see how slightly experimental they did with Yoshi only to try to keep the Island/Story adventure be it's main stick. I'd gladly listen to an entire compilations of happy/relaxing tunes from the Yoshi games. Yoshi was always my favorite character in the mario Franchise, while I may not grab all of it's game, they all (to an extend) have their cute charms that doesn't need to go as far as say "save da world" or anything.
Gil talking about Yoshi's New Island and why everyone rags on the story reminds me of Kingdom Hearts. Sure, people are going to complain about the confusing storyline but still enjoy the games for what they are, The Yoshi island games in that regard are functioning in the same principle.
Yoshi's island DS came bundled with my DS lite, and it single handedly is responsible for my ENTIRE FAMILY'S obsession with yoshi. So I guess I'm pretty biased lol
32:09 *Yoshi's Story It's a little confusing because Nintendo actually did release a port of Yoshi's Island to GBA. By the way, you forgot to mention it. Apparently, it added a small amount of new content, which is kinda interesting. It's also the version of Yoshi's Island Nintendo wanted to re-release the most for some reason.
I remember getting yoshi's touch and go for my birthday when i was a kid, and yes i was in fact pissed, when i played it as a kid i couldn't believe that was all there was to it.
Holy shit, Tetris Attack has always been my favourite puzzle game on SNES and I never knew till now that there’s a frickin’ story mode under vs mode! Lmfao Yoshi’s Story is my favourite Yoshi game, I don’t care what people say, that game fucking RULES! The music, the atmosphere, the level design, SO GOOD! Especially doing melon only runs, turns a fairly easy game into a brutally hard one.
Yoshi's Island DS is so underrated. I'm glad someone is actually saying good things about it. I did find New to be really boring tho. It's not the worst game ever, but I really didn't enjoy my playthrough
I feel your pain in new island. As I played it, I prayed that it will get better at the late-game content, but what did I get in return? A final boss that is so bad that I could rant a 1000 word essay on why it’s piss quality gave me PTSD. It could very well be in the hall of crap bosses.
I actually LOVE completing Crafted World. I honestly find it relaxing and I just really enjoy collecting stuff in games and that's this game's whole thing. One of my favorite Switch games tbh.
I’m so glad I’m not the only person on the entire planet that actually likes Yoshi’s Crafted World and appreciates it for what it is. Extremely under appreciated and overhated game.
I played Yoshi's Story way more than I should have. I would try to see if it was possible to clear each stage by only eating the Lucky Fruit just for fun.
I'm so glad to hear that Crafted World wasn't as bad as everyone harped on it for. As someone who loved the aesthetic of Wooly World and Little Big Planet, I really wanted to try Crafted World. However, I'm also one of those kinds of people that gets trepidation about trying new things, so I now feel good about giving it a go. Great work on the vid, as always!
I'm glad as well I tried out the demo and really enjoyed but was really put off when people said the game was bad. Now that I know it was because of high expectations I might try out this game soon.
Give it 10 more years or so when it becomes old and people will start praising it all of sudden and calling it an “underrated gem” or some shit. I call it the Nintendo fanboy cycle where Nintendo fans start universally appreciating a game for what it is ONLY once it becomes old and then will start hating and bashing on the newest game in the series at the time. It’s sad, but that’s just how the Nintendo fanbase is like nowadays I’m afraid.
people just show bias for what they grew up with and if a new thing doesn't live up to those expectations its automatically bad. not that those feelings are any less valid it just is what it is
@@sheep6937 but then there’s recency bias, which accuses anyone who doesn’t think the new game is better than the old one because “outdated mechanics, didn’t age well, etc.” is just saying that out of nostalgia for an “overrated game” *cough* Paper Mario
I finished a 100% run of the GBA remake of Yoshi's Island last month. I know the Super Mario Advance series is usually looked down on for having annoying voice clips and screen crunch, but the portability and extra levels more than make up for it in my opinion. I was surprised when the game told me I was the 306th Yoshi to adventure on the island, implying that my 305 deaths were actual Yoshi deaths. Thanks, Nintendo. Now I feel bad.
21:30 I would just like to add to what Gilly is saying. If you get 100s on all 8 levels of each world, you get two new levels: a harder bonus stage and a bonus challenge. The bonus challenges can also be played when you land on a flower on the roulette goal ring at the end of the stage (an incentive to find all 5 flowers). The challenges either give you items (accessed via the pause menu) or lives.
@@Hyper_Drud Yes. You unlock one new stage for each world simply by beating the game, no matter what the percent. The new stages are generally long and intensive, and really good, getting mileage out of some mechanics/enemies that are underused in the main game. Also, this gives a bit of margin for error when unlocking the original extra stages, since the game still requires 800 total points per world, but with the GBA-exclusive stages, that's now 800/900 instead of 800/800.
The removal of the hub world in wooly world on 3DS was praised by critics as a big improvement over the Wii U version. And it is 3D, so isnt it better in every way except resolution? I never played the Wii U version, but i love the 3DS version. Its also my favourite yoshi game.
Everybody complains about the way baby Mario cries in Yoshi's Island. I never found his crying annoying in any instance... At least in the SNES version. The GBA version, on the other hand...
I remember beating Yoshi's Story in one sitting and being absolutely pissed, I wasted $60 on something I could've rented for a $1 or $2 and that was me as a child thinking this.
I actually really liked the Scavenger Hunt and Poochy Pups stuff in Crafted World, but I'm also of the opinion that the fun part of Yoshi games is finding the hidden collectibles. The Poochy Pups frustrated me more, but mostly that was because some time limits are unreasonably strict if you don't already know where the Pups are. Scavenger Hunt though, that is my favorite feature ever. I love that it gives you incentive to slow down and enjoy the scenery. It's not too hard, though a few of the items required several runs through the level and those were usually the most satisfying. I actually prefer the addition of the recycled and household objects. Wooly World looks amazing, but ultimately I think Crafted World is more interesting because it commits to the aesthetic more. I absolutely love everything that's made from stuff that is usually just trash.
I had Yoshi's Safari as a kid from some box of SNES games my dad bought on clearance, but I never had a super scope to actually be able to play it. I begged him for months to get me one so I could finally play through this mystery Yoshi game, but he never did (probably couldn't find one by that point tbh, this was somewhere around the point that the n64 was transitioning to the gamecube). I've still never played it to this day.
a little thing to know about people who complain about annoying completion requirements, myself included. It is really hard to turn your brain off of that, "I have to get everything as soon as possible" mindset. It's the main reason I can't stand donkey kong 64 because I always forget something or get overwhelmed with the amount of stuff to get so I just give up in frustration. I've never Yoshi's Crafted World but people complaining about the completion requirements probably have the same mindset, and from what I've heard the game requires you to replay stages a few too many times and it just gets tedious.
That Gameboy Camera story brought back memories of trading Gameboy games at school like it was the black market. I remember training one Pokemon game for all three Donkey Kong Lands.
Yoshi's "New" Island and Yoshi's Crafted World falls under what I call "the Uncharted Effect", where if an original game that had huge success in the past has sequels, it has to have a striking resemblance to it. This makes a lot of great games mediocre as people set the bar too high for such titles, any drastic changes to the formula or major deviation could very well break a game's reception, granted some criticism is warranted a bit more comes from those hanging on to the past looking for that "true" Yoshi's Island sequel (which will probably never come). This is why most games turn into the same cookie cutter projects that we seen time and again. P.s. Great video, enjoyed the nostalgia of seeing Yoshi Story again, my favorite one as well as Wooly World, The best one. 😅My apologies for the rant.
The GBA Prototype was part of the dev kits for the GBA, to show off how it worked and give code examples. (Or, if I'm misremembering, then it'd be like Mario 128 or Meowths' Party - tech demos!)
I remembered owning Topsy Turvy when I was young, and I don't recall it being bad. No one seems to be mentioning it in the chat so idk if what Gilly said is true
I loved that game as a kid and I still do. The tilting mechanics are just fine. If Gilly can't get a handle on them... well I don't know what to say, I personally have no problem using them.
So I'm not gonna lie the title theme of Yoshi's New Island did legit scare me away from wanting to get the game when it was new and not really because I heard anything bad yet. If anything just the "New" Moniker was more of the killer since I was definitely jaded about the moniker at that point. Otherwise I never really thought it being super bad was accurate but because I associate Nintendo's "New" with milquetoast basicness I never felt compelled to get it and try. Also again that title theme definitely scared me for the OST. Thanks Sakurai for putting in Bandit Valley in Smash.
I agree 100% that Yoshi's Island DS and Yoshi's New Island are overhated. I never understood why people hated them so much, because I personally really liked both of them.
Phew, I'm glad I'm not the only person on this planet who likes Crafted World. It's pretty sad how a lot people hate on it for it's soundtrack alone. I'm not calling it a masterpiece or anything, Woolly World definitely had better music, but it's not worth getting upset about. I just simply turn the volume down and enjoy walking through the Cardboard World. They took a simple idea of an Arts-and-Craft environment that you would find in a Kindergarten Classroom, and made it look like something worthy of being in a Museum.
tbh the only problems i have with new island are the lack of unique mid world bosses and baby mario's crying sound effect somehow being the worst it's ever been. Otherwise it's a fun charming little game that's really fun in short bursts
Kinda curious to replay Crafted World now. I didn't like it a whole bunch at launch but maybe I'll feel differently about it now... Maybe after Woolly World though lol, I absolutely adore that game
I was probably just barely a teenager when Yoshi Touch and Go came out and bought it. I was so confused and then pissed off when I figured out the game was basically only a single level lol. Sold it back to Game Crazy for a few cents. Great video!
Personally, I didn't like Yoshi's New Island specifically because of how safe it was. I was upset to see it fail to REALLY bring something new to the gameplay of the Island series. All it had were gimmicks. The level design wasn't even on par with the games before it. The game wasn't bad...I just expected something "new" like the new soup mario game.
For posterity, Pizza Boy GBA Pro on Android supports gyro for Yoshi Topsy Turvy, so that should make it a lot easier to play while capturing footage, especially if you have an Android-based retro handheld.
Love the video. I have seen a few videos talking about yoshi's touch and go, mostly with bad reviews. And your point that it should not have been a full price game when compared to other DS titles is valid in hindsight. But I would conjecture that the best way to play this game is with a friend. My brother and I would pass our(his) single ds for hours on marathon mode. The high score feature is very rewarding when comparing to others and as the game is slow pace getting deep into a run becomes very sweaty and enjoyable. If you have a close friend and a time machine that would make you a 12 yo I am sure you would have a different review lol. All the best and thanks for the great content.
I did ask for yoshi touch n go and I loved it lol. Looking back now yeah it looks light on content. But back then there wasn't even much on the DS and I got a lot of mileage put of it.
I remember asking for that game too back in 2008. I already had Yoshi's Island DS at the time and loved that, so I was expecting more like it. Was a bit disappointed and had a lot of trouble playing it, but there were definitely parts I liked. I especially love the title theme rendition for the game.
As a kid who played yoshis Island and then yoshis story, I agree that story is an amazing game and I also didn't know people disliked it until I was an adult
It would be really cool if one day a 3D Yoshi game was made and they included the early puzzle games maybe safari too using motion controls as side modes kind of like Kirby games mini games
I have heard your opinion on Yoshi's new island and have played it myself. While I don't normally agree, I do however respect your opinion and am happy you enjoyed the game more then others.

It also has my favorite title theme out of the Yoshi games so far.
the entire yoshi series is so bizarre, it feels like it came from a different dimension
interesting to see how slightly experimental they did with Yoshi only to try to keep the Island/Story adventure be it's main stick.
32:09 *Yoshi's Story
It's a little confusing because Nintendo actually did release a port of Yoshi's Island to GBA. By the way, you forgot to mention it. Apparently, it added a small amount of new content, which is kinda interesting. It's also the version of Yoshi's Island Nintendo wanted to re-release the most for some reason.
Probably because of the Super FX chip from the original SNES version
Yoshi’s Wooly World is SO GOOD they better port it to switch soon
I LOVED Yoshi's Story as a kid! Played it wayyy too much, but I have zero regrets. I wish I had a N64 just to relive the nostalgia.
Lmfao
Yoshi’s Story is my favourite Yoshi game, I don’t care what people say, that game fucking RULES!
Yo, man. I love these journey videos. Love getting someone's perspective on an entire franchise's legacy.
The main goal was just to eat only the melons in each stage 30 of them for a perfect score
Yoshi’s story is probably the best yoshi game I’ve ever played.
@@Scoobydoo-tu4hd It’s really nowhere NEAR as bad of a game as people make it out to be. Just another case of new Nintendo game=automatically bad.
It’s sad, but that’s just how the Nintendo fanbase is like nowadays I’m afraid.
people just show bias for what they grew up with and if a new thing doesn't live up to those expectations its automatically bad. not that those feelings are any less valid it just is what it is
@@sheep6937 but then there’s recency bias, which accuses anyone who doesn’t think the new game is better than the old one because “outdated mechanics, didn’t age well, etc.” is just saying that out of nostalgia for an “overrated game”
*cough* Paper Mario
Didn’t the GBA port also have its own extra stages on top of the initial ones?
@@Hyper_Drud Yes. You unlock one new stage for each world simply by beating the game, no matter what the percent. The new stages are generally long and intensive, and really good, getting mileage out of some mechanics/enemies that are underused in the main game.
Also, this gives a bit of margin for error when unlocking the original extra stages, since the game still requires 800 total points per world, but with the GBA-exclusive stages, that's now 800/900 instead of 800/800.
Love these long videos Gilly you gonna have a new patron buddy, Peace!
Wooly World and the original are my personal favorites in the series.
Your Yoshi's Story take is sooo nostalgia filled.
I have to agree with New Island, especially on the music. It’s totally fine for the most part, people just single out bits
The removal of the hub world in wooly world on 3DS was praised by critics as a big improvement over the Wii U version.
And it is 3D, so isnt it better in every way except resolution?
I never played the Wii U version, but i love the 3DS version. Its also my favourite yoshi game.
51:50 As a Kirby fan, I felt this
In my personal opinion, Yoshi's wolly world has the best ost out of all of the yoshi games, however, athletic will always iconic.
my only gripe with Yoshi's New Island was the reptition with the sub bosses, because you just fight Kemek multiple times
Everybody complains about the way baby Mario cries in Yoshi's Island. I never found his crying annoying in any instance... At least in the SNES version. The GBA version, on the other hand...
Colour me surprised! I'd like to check out some of these games in the future notably Wooly World and Tetris Attack. Good work, Gilly!
I like to believe that our main green Yoshi is like an alpha of a pack.
Honestly, with Yoshi's Story, my biggest beef with it is how sensitive it feels to control Yoshi, especially mid-air.
I didn't even knew there were so many Yoshi games.
a little thing to know about people who complain about annoying completion requirements, myself included.
The original Yoshi’s Island is by far the best Yoshi game for me. And I have played every Yoshi games.
The GBA Prototype was part of the dev kits for the GBA, to show off how it worked and give code examples. (Or, if I'm misremembering, then it'd be like Mario 128 or Meowths' Party - tech demos!)
I gave up on crafted world because of the completeion stuff but your review is making me want to give it another chance
27:16
Yes, is why I do when I start Yoshi's Story
Wooley World needs a Switch port.
You can shoot yoshi in the back of the head in yoshi's safari, it reduces your health and causes him to look back at you in disappointment
I love Yoshi’s Story. I played it so many times as a kid.
I actually never registered that yoshi and yoshi cookie were 2 different games.
Saving this video so once I finish all the Yoshi games imma come back and watch this
I agree 100% that Yoshi's Island DS and Yoshi's New Island are overhated.
I really like the long videos. And Yoshi. Thanks!
Kinda curious to replay Crafted World now. I didn't like it a whole bunch at launch but maybe I'll feel differently about it now... Maybe after Woolly World though lol, I absolutely adore that game
Yoshi was definitely a favorite of mine growing up.
All my life I thought Yoshi touch n go was a fever dream and I'm actually shocked it's real
finally, another yoshi’s story fan!!
oh man, that analogue pocket strapped to a pro controller getup is amazing haha
Yoshi's Story is 10/10 👌
I was probably just barely a teenager when Yoshi Touch and Go came out and bought it.
Everyones favorite green dinosaur
Rex and Earl Sinclair says hi.
Yoshi Topsy Turvy wasn’t that bad, a 3/5 to me. Only time it got frustrating was any of the ball yoshi parts and the 2nd half of 6-5.
If baby mario keeps crying, Broly is going to come down and whoop his ass.
the yoshi games are pretty cute i love the ones i've played.
Yoshis Story IS actually a sequel to YI. Baby Bowser is clearly a bit older in this game and he refers to Yoshi as Marios little pet.
Gilliethekid is already a rapper with a huge podcast. Diff name my dude.
My guy, you can’t even spell the man’s name right.
I can’t look at the Yoshi’s Cookie multiplayer without thinking of an egotistical raptor’s life story…
“At age 6 I was born without a face”
As a kid who played yoshis Island and then yoshis story, I agree that story is an amazing game and I also didn't know people disliked it until I was an adult
It would be really cool if one day a 3D Yoshi game was made and they included the early puzzle games maybe safari too using motion controls as side modes kind of like Kirby games mini games
Tetris Attack was one of my most played SNES games
I've tried a similar setup for the Analogue Pocket to play WarioWare Twisted but could never get it working, what extension cable are you using?
I have heard your opinion on Yoshi's new island and have played it myself.
While I don't normally agree, I do however respect your opinion and am happy you enjoyed the game more then others.
They need to make a game like Yoshi's island but with zero babies in it, also they need to bring Brown Yoshi back
