God, I had Sonic Rivals as a kid, and while I agree with you that the story is wonky and weird, I played the crap out of it. Nostalgia tells me it wasn't nearly that bad, but the one thing I remember having a huge issue with was the fact that trying to unlock all the cards and collectibles was frustrating. I can't remember if it was because there were certain win conditions to unlock them or if you had to beat the stages on higher difficulties while it spiked unfairly (or at least it would've seemed that way to my video game deprived, young and dumb self), but I ended up never getting everything even though I beat the game over and over several times before I accidentally destroyed my PSP.

9:07 The floating bubble mechanic actually first showed up in Sonic 2 8-bit/GG, though given how rough that game is I don't blame you for not making it that far in. Sonic 2 Game Gear was actually my first Sonic game. I was a big fan of the cartoon and saw a kid playing what I would later learn was Sonic Chaos while waiting for karate lessons and thought it was awesome that you could play as Tails as he was my favorite, and asked my parents for one. Sonic 2 GG was super tough but I was most disappointed in not being able to play as Tails. And I didn't know you had to collect all of the Chaos Emeralds and just thought that they were just super well hidden pickups that give you a continue so when I finally beat Scrambled Egg zone I got the bad ending where Tails dies and it was just awful. I later got Triple Trouble and loved that game. Beat it many times, but always fell short on the emeralds because those plane special stages are tough to see and you basically have to memorize them. No depressing ending though!
The only Sonic game on a handheld that I owned was Sonic Classic Collection for the Nintendo DS. They're very fine ports of Sonic 1, 2, 3 & Knuckles. Funny thing growing up I didn't know Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles were meant to be part of the same game, so I always just played Sonic 3 standalone, same with Knuckles. Wasn't until I played the original intended combination of games and watched videos explaining it that I have finally come to accept Sonic 3 & Knuckles as the REAL Sonic 3.
All the games on Sonic Classic Collection for DS are the Sega Genesis releases, but are riddled with emulation errors (visual errors, audio problems, and additional lag) that otherwise don't exist in the original Sega Genesis releases. Hate to say it, but they are not "fine ports" at all.
IMO Sonic Generations 3DS would’ve been much better if they focused on his handheld history and had levels from those games. The story already takes place in an alternate timeline from the console Generations.
Sonic Drift is an attempt to make a mini version of Power Drift for the Game Gear with Sonic characters, it has no relationship with Mario Kart's release.

CONTROVERSIAL OPINION TIME!!! I kinda sorta low-key love Sonic RPG… Don’t get me wrong, it’s awful, it suffers such bad lag, it’s temperamental, there’s a shocking difficulty spike partway through, it’s super short and it’s graphically terrible considering you have the likes of 358/2 days and monster rancher DS looking gorgeous on the same system…. But it’s there. They tried something, they failed yeah, but they had an idea that could’ve worked so well, they just didn’t follow through. They could remake it on the switch and iron it out, I think it’d be brilliant, but since it’s never gonna happen, I’ll take what we got. I have played much worse RPGs, it’s not a good game, but there is something there, just executed poorly.
Tails Adventure is a great game but has more in common with Metroid than Sonic. That's not my nostalgia talking; I played it for the first time a couple years ago.
I could be wrong, but has there ever been a good “Rise of…”? Ex. Rise of Skywalker, Rise of the Silver Surfer, Rise of the Robots. Maybe movies and games need to give that title up

Advance 3 is better than 2. Just sayin, Oh but for real. The bottemless pits did not bother me too much … Now. As a first timer when you play these games yes This is a giant pain in the ass. But when you know the layout of the levels it not as punishing. And Sky Canyon Can be a pretty fun stage. Thank god that level took so fucking many Hours to beat
sonic 2 for the game gear imo aint too bad? my two problems are that the cloud level is completely fucking stupid and annoying. but, you can just fly over it using the hang glider at the start of the level. you can you ride it continuously skipping over everything as long as you catch the gusts of wind that rise you up ( you gotta know how to use it first, though, Gilly haha. it aint that hard, you just tap back when it starts to dip. gotta feel dat rythm). But, if youre looking to get that emerald... good luck. its hidden in the clouds and is such a BITCH to get to! then, you get like a green hill zone type level (that LOOKS like it should be the first level, but, it doesnt play like one...be warned!) where you navigate a series of springs bouncing (due to its narrow field of view) BLINDLY into possible death! you have to memorize the layout, and even still, if you hit that spring at the wrong angle or the wrong momentum youre gonna land somewhere you didnt want to and DIE! DIE, DIE, DIE, DIE DIE, DIE!!!! rack up extra lives cuz youre gonna need em for just this one level!!!! oh, and no spin dash. the fuuu'?

"Sounds about DIMPS" is perfect Nothing DIMPS has ever done in Sonic is good. Neo Geo Pocket, the Advance series, the Rush series, Sonic 4, and any main game handheld spinoff... All garbage. DIMPS couldn't figure out how to make a good Sonic game if 2, 3&K, and Mania grew mouths and bit them in the ass. DIMPS just can't get past bad enemy placement, bottomless pits everywhere, and too many springs or boost pads to try and give speed back after they take it away with the aforementioned bad enemy placement or just plain bad level design. Seriously, the bottomless pits. Holy crap. Even replaying good Sonic games, I still fear I just died every time I miss a jump and start falling. I have some kind of weird bottomless pit PTSD thanks to DIMPS. From the bottom of my heart: fuck DIMPS.
I will never get the appeal of Sonic. For me, Sonic 2 and Sonic Mania have some of the worst controls and level layouts I have ever tried. Also, not a fan of any character, especially hatee Big and Tails because even as a kid I hated kiddy sidekicks. I still enjoy Sonic related videos from Gil and SomecallmeJohnny, these guys are lovable.

Donkey Kong Country, The Messenger, even the original Crash Bandicoot on PS1 that everyone complains he's too dopey to control is still miles better. Sonic has the worst jump ever, I don't know how that's possible or how Sonic ever became popular when the controls are still bad in 2017 game. I can't really say anything about the graphics either when the games are processing so blast and I love the 16-bit style. Not when the main character looks and acts like a total dick and has one huge eye with two pupils. The designs are awful.

I really enjoyed Sonic Rush. Actually I think the DS Sonic stuff was probably the best for his handheld entries
