  • Bass fishing turns on as a storm approaches and the barometer drops! Fishing the beach ahead of bad weather often produces good catches like this.

    John, once you get the spook bug it’s hard to stop. Next try the slow sinking spooks (i.e. rapala Subwalk 15). Just like topwater spooks will spark a hit when the pencil doesn’t, the sinking spook will draw fish when the darter isn’t exciting them. Fish them in current or anywhere you’d fish a darter. (They’re sub surface so it’s not topwater and can be fished at night). Especially deadly along shadow lines on the LI Bridges at night.

      It's not that serious dude. I'm from Florida and I live in NJ now and it's a completely different world fishing up here. If you enjoy always being cold while you fish then it's for you. Just an example, you'll never see anyone who is serious about fishing use these metal clips they use up here to quickly change out lures. As well as swivels. There is no getting out of knot tying in fishing. Just my 2 cents. I'll still be out there though. 😎🎣

    I crush my trebles, too. Sometimes even the singles, depending on the barb size. I find that the bass are far easier to keep on that bluefish. The blues just fight so violently that they throw the hook, barb or no barb.

    John, consider trying the larger Doc lure. It weighs about the same as the Jigging World spook and the action is better then the smaller Doc. The smaller Doc does not seem to have the same walk the dog action as it's larger brother which catches lots of fish. Keep up the good work!

    Hi John, I just recently ordered your 9'2 surf rod, and can't wait to put it to use. I'm curious about 2 things. 1) in this video, you mention preferring the 3.2 Oz lure vs the 2.6 Oz. But from what I understood, when you talk about your rod, you say the sweet spot in 1 to 3 Oz lures. So does it handle heavier lures just fine or what is the tipping point?
    2) what reel should I pair with your rod? I know you've recommended a bunch, Penn battle 3, Penn slammer, tsunami salt x, van Staal of course, saragosas, maybe visser.... what fits best with 30 lb braid and likely 40 lb fluro leader?

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I really like the SaltX6K spooled with 30 braid and 50 leader. This past season I was using the 3.8-ounce Dark Matter spooks. I would say that's around the upper end, although I've probably lobbed some heavier eels.

    • @kylenorman7997
      @kylenorman7997 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JohnSkinnerFishing thanks so much! I will do that! As a side question, i know to use the TA clips, as you mention, but I was wondering what knots you like to use to go braid to fluoro, and fluro to TA clip? I have been using a double uni knot for the braid to fluro, and a single uni for fluro to the clip...while they seem super strong. I just find it a bit of a challenge to get them tight when dealing with fluro that is that thick... would love any recommendations you have - thanks again!

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I go through a barrel swivel when joining braid to leader - palomar on the braid, clinch on both ends of the leader.

    • @kylenorman7997
      @kylenorman7997 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JohnSkinnerFishing ok, thanks! I had always been told that lessens the sensitivity of feeling what's happening with the lure/fish, but that's a great tip, and easier to replace leader than the other way! Thanks, John!

  • @anthonygregorio2208
    @anthonygregorio2208 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Awesome action John! Question about the lure and the rod your using: Your rod's "Lure Weight" is listed 1-3 oz and the spook lure is 3.4 oz. Are you ever concerned that a lure could snap a guide off if it exceeds what is listed on the rod? Just wondering.

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No concern at all. Manufacturer rod ratings are approximations that vary a lot.

    John, do you ever use a line to leader knot like the FG or double Uni? I've noticed you always seem to have a swivel connection instead of a wind-on knot. Just curious, what knots you used in your terminal tackle set up.

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I don't. Palomar on the braid end of the swivel, clinch on the leader end. No one's convinced me that there's an advantage to eliminating the small high quality barrel swivel, but I'm always open to being convinced.

    Quick question(kinda haha). Im looking to buy the tsunami trophy 11ft heavy rod rated for 2-6oz lures and 20-40lb braid i think it was and to use the tsunami shield 6000 with 40lb braid to a 60-60lb leader and 75 lb ta clip. Im looking to use this rod and reel size for throwing lures like the doc 9 inch model thats rated for i believe 3.5oz. Ive changed the hooks to vmc inlines and wanted to know, do you John think that rod length and lure rating would be good enough to be able to use for fishing the doc size as listed before in your personal experience? I have the 10ft mh in this rod 1-5 oz and the shield in the 5000 with 30lb braid with 50lb leader and 75lb ta clip and just dont want to risk breaking the tip on that rod. So thats why i asked what i did.

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You're not going to break that 10ft MH casting a Doc. That said, the 11-footer with the reel and line you describe is a fine setup.
