    Replacement arrived!By the way, I did forget to mention that the original lure did have a decent strike however as most anglers will attest you can get a hit th-cam.com/users/postUgkxCbNOWAGmn6nfbCbJDmasvBq7J38KZNw2 and fish will hang on and release lure. I used the replacement lure yesterday and ran thru a Shimano Waxwing, Kastmaster, Bobber (set to sink). I found the does run deep (I casting on the flats 3.5'). Make sure you adjust your rate of retrieve and rod tip angle (up) to prevent getting snagged on bottom. Used it a couple of times and action was very lifelike (looked like local bait fish for trevally), craftsmanship very good....however eyeball fell out. I asked for replacement and it is on it's way! It was very easy to change out treble to single inline hook.

    I've been using Spooks for quite a few years now. A slimmer, smaller lure that's been working well for stripers is the 4" Rebel Jumpin' Minnow. Walks the dog in slimmer profile...been having good luck with it even in daytime.

    South Texas, South Padre Island area, Spooke Jr. works... thanks for the video,,, took me a while to figure it out, but retrieval cadence depends on water temp, current, light, darkness... glad you are showing that it's okay to change up the cadence, just depends on water conditions.

    "Walking the dog!" One of my favorite lures, but have to admit never used from the beach. For me, when a fish follows I will increase the speed dramatically, as if the bait is trying to flee. Also, a failure to committ could mean a color change is needed...Great video as usual, thanks!

    I just started to get into striper fishing. I live in Minnesota and only get to the coast about once a year for a week or so. Being from Minnesota , I have been fishing muskies for many years and have found that there are quite a few muskie lures that work well for stripers. The similar muskie version of this lure is called a jackpot. Another rubber bait that works well is a bulldawg (made by muskie innovations). You have to change the hooks over for saltwater but they work really well.

  • @drewjames1104

    John, your technique with the spook- I found to be the best technique for me. Holding the rod to the side with soft pumps and quarterly reel turns helps keep that necessary slack in the line. I tried other rod positions and retrieve speeds but nothing worked better than your technique. The spook plug really gets the bass triggered, even when there are predominantly bluefish on everyone else’s line. Thanks for the technique!

    I found the same thing this year as well, fishing the lower Susquehanna, threw a regular popper or "Creek chub" and nothing switched to a spook style bait and fish after fish after fish, Same with an upsized "fluke" style soft plastic unweighted, same as used in bass fishing just a larger bait and heavier gauged offset worm hook, there's something about that side to side motion they can't get enough of.

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing

    They come from your side of the pond manufactured by Poes and made from cedar called the Giant Jackpot
    They don't work all the time but under certain conditions they get smashed to pieces
    I think Poe's got taken over by the Yakima Bait Company but I might be talking out my arse
    They have a similar model called the Poe Tail that has only a mid treble and a big blade hanging off the rear
    They work great in the summer for me
    Don't know if they still make them but I don't think they'd stand too much time in the saltwater .

They were considered “blanks” made by the company. They were cheaper too, lol. Fly charter captains use them without hooks to “tease” them for their fly fishing customers. By far my favorite and most used Striped Bass lure. Also to answer your question, they started as a musky lure and discovered by Striper anglers later on.

I'd love to see you experiment with removing the rear treble and replacing it with a single and a maybe a teaser. you'll notice the stripers never go for the back of the bait. that's because bass don't have aggressive teeth. they like to strike and consume their bait head first. if they ate fish backwards they'd get stuck. John, in your description above, beside the Jigging World link is the word Preferred. Is that saying you preferred that lure for what ever reason over the LilDoc?

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. The JW spook casts farther and still has great action. After a few more trips I mostly used the JW model.

  • @supremekarate1

    John what about the retrieve? are you constantly reeling at a slow or medium speed or do you occasionally pause in the retrieve to give a little slack?

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's why I showed the plug swimming early in the video. The rod action, reel speed, and things like that are all too variable. I figured the best thing to show was how the lure should look when swimming. The focus needs to be on giving it a little slack between the pulls.

    Hello John, I picked up the jigging world version based on your advice, but when i tested it out it was sinking below the surface as opposed to working on top, do you think i got a lemon?

    Bone colored spook is my “go to” lure in southern Maine. Use it 80% of the time. I remember fishing around 8 other guys and I was the only one catching for 2 hours. They all kept asking what I was using but none of them had a spook

  • @tommyo321
    @tommyo321 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great video. I've picked up a few. But noticed two things, your back hook might be giving the striper leverage to help pop the front hook. And I noticed you it looks like you have knee pads on over your waders? If so what kind?

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing

      The pads are Hatch NK 45, but they don't make them anymore.

    Hey John I wanted to ask you how you like the tsunami evict? Does it hold up well from spIashes? I plan on getting a tsunami slimwave rod for fluke, sea bass and hopefully blackfish to use from a kayak but really haven't seen reviews on how the Evict holds up to getting splashed which would certainly happen on a kayak. Do you recommend the 6'4" MH for that and what size Evict would pair with that nice? I use to use a 7' St. Croix Mojo surf rod with a Battle 2 but found they are a little heavy in that application. Really just trying to lighten up my gear as much as possible. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks again.

      Yes - the evict 2000 on the 6'4'' MH. Awesome and the reel is holding up fine. I actually started using it last season.
