One Lure - A Load of Surfcasting Fish!

- I stuck with one lure for surf fishing a beach rip and caught a lot of fish to show for it! The key was to try different parts of the rip to find the hidden fish. This video is another great example of the power of a properly worked bucktail lure. You can learn more about my new online bucktail fishing course at saltstrong.com/....

Replacement arrived!By the way, I did forget to mention that the original lure did have a decent strike however as most anglers will attest you can get a hit th-cam.com/users/postUgkxCbNOWAGmn6nfbCbJDmasvBq7J38KZNw2 and fish will hang on and release lure. I used the replacement lure yesterday and ran thru a Shimano Waxwing, Kastmaster, Bobber (set to sink). I found the does run deep (I casting on the flats 3.5'). Make sure you adjust your rate of retrieve and rod tip angle (up) to prevent getting snagged on bottom. Used it a couple of times and action was very lifelike (looked like local bait fish for trevally), craftsmanship very good....however eyeball fell out. I asked for replacement and it is on it's way! It was very easy to change out treble to single inline hook.
Once again a lesson learned. It would take me twenty plus years to learn what you have taught me in the two I have been watching. Thank you, John.
John, it's great that you consistently land these fish on a jig with a crushed barb. Just goes to show that the correct pressure and a nice bend in the rod will usually see you land the fish with less stress caused to both the fish and the angler. All your fish seem to swim off so strong which is a pleasure to watch. Hopefully more anglers will see these videos and begin to put some of your wisdom to practice. Thanks
Me and my dad ( smokster0604 ) because of you crushED all our barbs. I’ve never got hooked too bad. I know he has. That’s the best thing to do. You’re the man Johnny
its really a pleasure to watch such a calculated fisherman, the rip, the depth, the ledge, the bucktail weight, the retrieve, the choice of spot. legend as always
Skinner, I make no bones about being not only a fan but also a devotee. As someone who is in the infantile stages of producing fishing videos, I'm always trying to pick up on new and enjoyable features from you, Halk and the like. That being said, DON'T CHANGE A THING!! Hahahaha!! The fast forward is cool. Speaking for myself, I like seeing fish being caught, displayed, released and/or bled out for the cooler. The fight is an important part of the action, but fast forwarding through a few fights to provide us with the footage and knowledge that you do works! Thank you!
Thanks for the kind words!
I agree with you on speeding up when you see fit. Great videos.
John when you catch this many Striper, I like the speeded up and the normal retrieve. This was a great day of fishing and a great video. Thanks
Ayeeeeee! More living life through skinner cause I suck at fishing these days 🤣
I like the speeding up of the video as opposed to editing it out. I live in Boston and do a lot of fishing 40 miles north, either sand beach or in the river close to the mouth of the river. I haven’t bought the book yet but I’ve watched all ur bucktailing videos and my catch rate has increased by quite a bit. I’ll definitely know in the off season when I go back and look at my log. Biggest mistake I made in the past was going to heavy like you’ve said
This is like dream comes thru. So many good quality fish on one trip, what else can you ask more. Thanks John.
Normal speed showing the cast, retrieval, and narration of what you are doing 👍🏻
All of your vids are always helpful!
Thanks 👍
I really like the sped up parts with no cuts. It gives a great idea of the fishing session while retaining continuity.
Thanks for that. I agree.
As someone who is just beginning to learn how to fish Bucktail, this video, like all your other videos, is really very informative and helpful. Thanks John! 👍
I purchased this rod this past winter. I cannot recommend this rod enough. Throwing bucktails with it is incredible. And absolutely love the guide layout. Great rod and another great vid !
Thanks. It really came out perfect.
Another GREAT VIDEO to add to the list !
John, you have probably helped more fishermen to be confident in their ability to fish the bucktail then any other ! Just goes to show you don't need the latest fancy lure to catch fish. Keep these Great videos coming, please. Pete
John, thanks so much for the quality lessons. Clear, thoughtful, best fishing instruction on TH-cam by far. FYI, I like the sped-up video for ordinary fish. Be Well, sir.
I appreciate the kind words and input!
I’ve been watching you for 2 years your videos never get old in fact I’m very excited when you post... I still trying catch my PB fluke i love you man.
Speed it up or cut it whatever works best for you John. Just happy to learn anything from you.
Fantastic instruction. In my minds eye i can see the bucktail drifting and lifting. I wish it worked that well when I’m actually fishing, when I feel mostly clueless.
The mullet is a very strong and heavy fish. So the feeling while fishing is strong, adding to the fun. I enjoyed the video. Like 👍
I love it John. Keep up the good work. I appreciate all the insight - your books/videos have made a real difference in my game over the last few years.
I commented a couple of weeks ago that I wasn’t a fan of the fast forwarding. But on this video it was fine. If there’s no drag being pulled out and the fish isn’t jumping, like you said there’s not much to see if the fight anyway. Like someone else commented, I kinda live vicariously through watching your videos. All your videos are very entertaining and educational!!! I am learning a lot from them. Thank You John!!!
Input appreciated!
Another good day from the legend himself! I've been using alot for bucktails lately
Always enjoy the video no matter how you edited... Always love learning Watching you out in the water
Mr skinner just got your book in the mail on bucktails. I didn’t expect it to be signed. Thank you. I know nothing of how to fish them but I’m committing this year to knowing how. First…. Read. Thanks again.
Enjoy the book! Thanks for your support!
I like the fast motion, also love hearing the reel sing….
Speed it up and while playing the “ Bennie Hill theme” . Lol 😂 great video John.
Either way Skinner, we love your show!! I learn so much, thanks and stay well John!
John, your analytical nonsense approach is awesome. Reading the water and locating soft and hard structure is my favorite way to hunt stripers. I like the speed up approach, however, when fighting a meaty 30# bass, I enjoy your aggressive fighting strategy.
Thank you for many years of learning your tried and true techniques.
Bruce.
Thanks - I promise not to speed through any battles with 30-pounders!
I like when you speed it up, unless your on a screamer than I like seeing drag pulled, good video
Much prefer the speeding up for continuity, but if you’re not teaching anything specific, I don’t need to see it. You have the most informative videos on TH-cam and I only wish I could tailor my travel to fish instead of fishing when I get a chance to travel. Keep it up. I don’t understand why you don’t have millions more followers.
The experience you bring to target fish and hit the pattern is amazing and it is a little depressing really to think I will never get there. But with your help, I still have hope!
Fishing is exciting when I watch.
I learn one night, then go out am try the skills I learned.
Great site....
Love watching
I like the speeding up John. Thanks.
Good morning Johnny !!! Awesome! Love when you’re surfcasting !
Great video. I like the retrieve part of the video sped up and go back to regular speed as the fish gets close. Don't omit the retrieve.
As always it’s a pleasure to watch. Great to see some abundance of healthy fish. Hopefully we are on our way to a population recovery. Slot limits are the way to go. Need a fluke slot now.
We need something on the fluke. I've heard Jersey is good. Eastern LI is not even close to good.
Some will say that spot is amazing. But if there were 3 other guys in that same spot, they might not be catching at all. While watching John catch bass after bass. He has definitely mastered fishing period
John i like the speed through instead of cutting out as well... i feel like pumping the rod like that is well known enough to most fisherman but its cool to see every time and it sort of makes the catch-land sequence complete. Tight lines!
Great input. Thanks.
Keep doing it the way you have done it. Great job
The searobin was honoring your presence 💯👌
Speed it up or cut it out. The more info packed in, the more videos I can watch and get the info. Love the videos John! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you.
Everytime I see your videos I wish I was fishing with you take me with you bro
Hi John!
First of all I'm a big fan, and enjoy your content and products. You asked for feedback so here is mine.
I enjoy listening to the fish peeling line and personally enjoy watching you fight the fish. I don't mind the ramp up, but the noise of the ramp up is a bit distracting. I rather see the full action than to hear the speed up.
I've been fishing from a kayak lately and haven't really found the confidence with bucktails from the kayak yet. Hopefully that changes soon.
Thanks for sharing your experience John.
I agree ... Speed up until there's something important to day 8, or make a point about. Great video as always! 👍
Input appreciated. Especially since I agree with it.
Another great watch John..🤙🏼🤙🏼..
We appreciate the vids John!!!
Let it play out! No cut outs or speed ups. Been liking the intros lately too where you speak at the camera.
Thanks for the input. The problem is that a video longer than about 20 minutes just doesn't work for TH-cam. When I want to show a stretch of fishing that's something like 40 to 60 minutes long, something has to go.
John Skinner Fishing Yeah not everyone has that attention span snd decreasingly so, it seems like. I’ve long been a fan of your format I think if anything speed up the parts between casts and maybe try to cut out some less noteworthy catches, although you must do a lotnof that already. It can be hard to choose the best moments of a productive day!
Another great day and I do like it when you speed things up
Appreciate the input!
Nice work John, very educational!
Wow fishing as was meant to be, I need to buy the book
just pickt up a few skinner style bucktails...really nice quality 👌
Great video! I took your training to work a few weeks ago on a rip exiting on a creek on the Chesapeake bay and it worked perfectly! Felt bad for the two boats directly across from me not catching (I was wading).....
Awesome! Thanks for sharing that.
I’ll never forget when I caught a sea robin on top water. They’re unpredictable creatures. They’ve inundated the north shore spot i fish in often where fluke lay, and they’ll chase about anything with a whole school following them in. At least we’ve seen plenty of quality game fish in our waters this spring!
Right. There are way too many of them. I've caught a couple on pencil poppers.
I like the speeding up and I’ve been watching your channel for a while. As a new viewer, I did enjoy the whole fight. Maybe you should show one catch in regular mode and the rest in speed up.
Thanks.
John, you asked for a suggestion. Have you thought of adding a simple drawing on a whiteboard about what is happening with the current, bottom structure and where you’re placing the casts. It doesn’t have to be elaborate but may help people look for features like your fishing and be able to place their lures more effectively. Thanks for all your doing with all your explanations. There’s very few that can do what you do. Exceptional as always!
Hi John, a little off topic but I just purchased your fluke rod and a Accurist 2020 reel from J&H. What size braid do you recommend for both inshore and offshore? Thank you sir!
Nice, that ledge is key!
Nice catching of the stripe bass’s
I ordered your rod from jandh tackle and an accurist with 20lb braid, your swing hook bucktails at 2oz, gulp mullets and grubs 2 weeks ago. I tried the set up today on a party boat and had 10 fluke in 2 hours and 5 keepers, biggest fluke at 28". Amazing sensitivity.
Awesome performance! Thanks for sharing. Yes, that fluke rod is rather perfect after I went through more than a year and 4 prototypes to get it right.
Awesome video, thank you for the pointers.
Awesome video last week I caught 3 sea robins on the large yozuri mag darter
Hey John, I would keep the first couple fish at normal speed, go faster on routine catches but then go back to regular speed on unusual, special, or teaching catches. When you speed it up try to lower the volume on the clip so the wind noise isn't so annoying. My $0.02. Great content as usual.
I appreciate the input!
Exactly what I think too.
I like the speeding up!
I do enjoy the sweet music of drag pulling, but I can appreciate speeding up the rest.
Thanks for the input.
This method is pretty much exactly how we fish for striped / hybrid bass below the dam from the bank. Let it fall down through the current, popping it back up so it can continue to have that falling action, and try to get it in quickly before the current swings it into the shallows.
Perfect description! You described it better than I did.
You're awesome. Speed through them occasionally.
Thanks!
Hello, enjoyed the video, reading your Bucktail book this morning so this was the perfect video.
As for the question, I prefer speeding up the video, provides for a more watchable video but keeps the timeliness, conditions, etc.intact for the viewer.
Heading out with my Skinner dark matter rod matched with a VSVR150B to some cape beaches this week.
Hope to see a review of the Autopilot kayak in Long Island waters.
Thanks
Thanks for the input. I feel the way you do because I can cover more fishing without it being a chopped up highlight reel.
Love the vid's don't mind the speed up on small fish but the bigger ones regular speed. Would love to see a bloopers vid.
Thanks for the input. If you like bloopers and haven't seen the end of this video, you'll love it. I still laugh at it. th-cam.com/video/DKuu_MzDTwo/w-d-xo.html
I'd like to see more of your surroundings. I do like the speed up at least after 1 or 2 real time
Thank you for your input. When I'm on the shore I intentionally show as little surrounding as possible. It is not right expose small spots with limited access to tens of thousands of people. Some people on TH-cam do it and make good money doing it. I will never be one of them.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing he tried to be slick 🤣
Hi John, my wife wanted to pick up a new hobby so she bought some crab pots. Can you do a video about crabbing so I can learn some basics? We also don’t have a boat so some tips for good spots without one would be nice too. Thanks!
Good morning Cptn Skinner. I have a question. You think its possible for you to produce a video on Conventional reel use in the surf?
I cant really find much on information.
Ive seen sea robin do that a lot early season chasing little shrimp
Speeding up is fine because it lets us see how the action is, the only thing with speeding up is it sounds like a wild wind storm. It works best when you narrate over the noise when sped up.
Thanks. I'm going to mute the speedups from now on.
Do bucktail lures work better in the northeast or do we southern folk just not use then the right way? 👀 Asking for a friend 🥸
They work all over the world. I use them on many species in SW Florida.
Your a legand ! I have been following u for many years and have read many of your books. I just have one ? , Do u ever go out from shore and not have success ? It's like your a fish God ! LoL. I appreciate you !
Absolutely I catch an occasional skunk, especially on short shore trips.
Nice vids learn so much from you fished sandy hook bucktail and twister 20 blues sat
Fun!
I’m fine with fast forward. Learning a lot on this technique. Just not sure where I can find these conditions. I’ll have to spend some time with google earth. Thanks
The sea robin thing has been happening the last month on the backside of Moses. Many of them, jumping out of the water, and 6- or seven at a time all around your feet in groups. Spawning maybe?
Hey John I’m on my wife’s account but I’m a fisherman from RI and I specialize in surf fishing in may and early June and sometimes fall if I’m not deer hunting and I’m fluking or drifting eels I’n the summer on my boat , I got 2 fish in may over the slot surf fishing where last year my largest fish in may was 34 inches so there making a comeback you could say , but people always ask me go to improve there fishing and what I do I fish jetties and always use the outgoing current and use either a Diawa sp or Yozori hydro , ofcourse I throw a darter or Danny plug in the mix I haven’t tried a buck tail in years this video has my mind change I think I’ll use a buck tail for one of m my last trips for surf fishing and yes we/I don’t bounce bottom just let the current do out work , but I tell everyone to watch your videos if you want to learn cuase a lot of people ask me my methods ect I’ll tell them watch the master his name is John skinner , and John come rona jettie in RI nite time I won’t name the jetti inless you ask but the fishing is absolutely amazing
Excellent to hear you're into great fishing! You're only about 40 miles from me across the water.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing I know on clear nights I can see Long Island sound 👍
Legit I’m very successful with fishing I always rave and tell people LISTEN to this man he will show you lol
Speechless...No Words...but a few questions. On the last full moon I had my PB for a bucktail, very pissed off fish with good corner hook set. I'm curious about the time am pm? How would you describe the current and stage of tide? Is that one of your signature bucktails or something else. One more after a fish has been caught how long until that fish will hit a lure again. I've always told myself they shut down for a day or two. Are there any studies on this that you know of. Thanks again
One of my bucktails. There's a link in the video description. I don't know when they'll hit again. Evening incoming.
John I would love to hear some detail about how you figure out depth. Are you studying charts - if so which ones? Or can you figure it out by eye + feeling bottom with the bucktail? Congrats on these beautiful stripers. Excellent fish handling technique. Thanks for showing. I enjoyed that crazy bluefish bite but I haven't had much luck with stripers this spring.
It's a combination of charts and the time that it takes for the bucktail to hit bottom on the fall.
One vote for keeping the video intact and using the fast forward..
Hi John I’m learning a lot from your videos, I lives by east the closer areas I have for fishing are, Westhampton, Ponquoque, shinnecokc bay, but they are not to good as the place your fishing any suggestions?
Great video! I do like seeing a great fight, but if it’s a basic fish retrieve then it’s good to have you speed it up to get to better action footage.
Thanks!
John, either normal speed or slowing up is fine. Maybe sprinkle in some sped up video of repeated/similar sections.
Thanks for the input.
Ive caught sea robins on topwater before. Had one hit a fast moving spook in about 8 feet of water last fall.
Johnny what’s your opinion on the overcast ? I feel like I always get one of those good days when you loose count ? You know what I mean. Don’t edit anything. I learned a lot from you. Me and my dad.
I just enjoy your videos do them however you want 👍
Exactly
Awesome video I love fishing on cloudy/foggy days like that; the low pressure usually makes for good fishing. Was this the sound or the bay?
Awesome, you got the van Staal on there !!! I know I’ve been MIA- apologize about that. Romance. Do you crush the barbs on your bucktail’s ?
That's a SaltX. Crushed barbs.
It seems like you've deviated from the Van Staal in favor of the Salt X, atleast in your videos. Do you still use the VS in the surf? I've heard mixed reviews on the Salt X's seal. Curious on your perspective between the two. Thanks for all of your content!
I'm starting my third season with the SaltX 6000. It's been flawless. I find it smoother both in cranking and drag than my VS200, but that is a much older reel that has seen much longer and harder use, so it's not fair for me to compare the two.
John , do you still use tsunanmi centro swivels for your leader for striped bass fishing? if not, what do you use,? do you have a link? hard to find the centro. thanks
Yes, although they might be called something else instead of centro. I'm using stainless steel tsunami.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing I’ll figure it out. Thanks!
I appreciate the speed up segments
You're in the majority by quite a bit - thanks!
Speed of some of the clips and keep some at normal pace. It gives the viewer an idea on how long it tales
I agree 100%. Thanks!
I like the speeding up
Thanks!
I guess something was after the sea robin. Sea Money had a video a few years ago the showed multiple Fluke jumping clear out of the water off a beach in NJ.
Hi John, what size reel are you using. I have your 8’ rod and gonna get your 9’ foot soon and wanted to know what size reel your using. If it’s the 6000 is that too big?
I'd use a 4000 on the 8-footer and a 5000 or 6000 on the 9.
I like the tsunami saltx but they don’t make a 5000. What 5000 size reel do you recommend?
Great video! Bit curious to ask this John..... I fish an area with moving current where the depth varies from 7-15 ft, but can allow as low as a 3/8 oz jig to slowly drop down and trigger a strike. Any particular current speed here you are looking for, to go that much heavier with the bucktail? Or is it simply to get better distance to reach the strike zone?
I never go heavier for distance. There's a lot of current and the water drops to easily 20 feet, so this jig with a fair amount of hair works about right.
Trying to figure out where on the south shore you were out?
First time I’ve ever seen a sea robin jump
