2023 Chery Omoda 5 Review: Possibly My FAVOURITE Cheap Chinese SUV!

  • The Chery Omoda 5 has launched in Australia, to some of the most MIXED reviews I've ever seen...
So today I thought we should review the all-new Chery Omoda 5, a 5 seat small family SUV from Chinese brand Chery. You might remember Chery from their last foray into Australia, where frankly their cars sucked. But that has changed, and this thing is insanely good - especially when you consider its price point. So, let's review the good, bad and ugly with the Chery Omoda 5!

I've got an Omoda and my daughter has a Jolion. There is not a lot of difference. Jolion is more spacious in the back and Omoda is quicker. The Jolion driver assist is just as annoying as Omoda but you can turn more features off in Omoda.
My daughter likes the safety features and loves the tech, she doesn't seem to notice the beeps at all. Both are good value and much of a muchness.

Cheap doesn’t mean bad, they control production locally from raw material to press to every nut and bolt and piece of trim etc in between. it’s just simple economics, control the line. OG legacy brands make stuff everywhere then transport to another place to put everything together. Hence the time delay. Then on top of it (slightly political) they (Chinese) get poked at all avenues, in turn stuff which is a lot that needs to be made in China will not be made on time nor released out of port essentially to return the poke. Delays on traditional branded cars are ripe we are all aware of this. Just thought I’d put it into perspective. On an additional note we pay high cost still for delayed ICE vehicles yet other larger markets namely the cash cow china is basically gutting them as they are obsolete not competitive compared to local brands and won’t pass emissions. A small time frame has brought out a competitive advantage in the end we can save and get something nice and up to date, nay sayers of each generation put down everything. Japanese, then Korean now this. I don’t see any issue with this wave. It’s good this channel rates things properly.

Sorry Gucci and all those western brands are just overrated average, western world were and will always be the poorest in the world, Real Rich never colonised others ;) present Australia are just descendants of British prisoners.
      5star Euro NCAP !!!
Chery is now part of TATA Jaguar Land Rover
And today Volvo is just lower version of Chery since Swedish sold Volvo to Geely China.
And Chery Indonesia Manufacturing is specialised in producing Right Side Driver Units Worldwide.
Toyota Indonesia Manufacturing since 1970's is just 👎
Japan is the same, very poor nature, monocultural, monolingual, like very few of them can speak other languages, has been praised by western world, middle east, etc because they're all the same poorest parts of the world.
Japanese food and beverages are some of the poorest in the world and still they consider as fancy 🤣🤣🤣
Because those animals know nothing better about the world.
      Anyway 😅

My Daughter bought the Omoda C5 in South Africa 3 months ago. To my surprise the touch screen overheat and causes a lot of safety concerns especially lane assist. The car have been back with the dealer to try and sort an apparent electronic issue, but to date no problem sorted and it now seems the dealer is starting to shy away from solving the problem or repair/replace the required.
Rest of the car seem smooth but the untesolved issue is egg in the face.

Would be nice if a reviewer took 20 minutes to read the manual and set the car up properly to suit their needs. The lane assist can be sorted in the settings also the beeping and alarm volumes can all be turned down so they are not anoying. Also as far as handling goes the main buyers for this vehicle won't even know or care about vehicle handling. Our Omoda 5 that we have had since day 1 release has been perfect. The wife uses it to commute 30ks in traffic to work every day, it rarely travels at a speed greater than 80kph. The price, warranty, servicing is what got us in the door.

Hi just a quick note had a new Chery j3, a load of rubbish, and after a year or so they pull out of Australia leaving use high and dry for parts. Sold it for $1600 just to get shot of it. 1.5 turbo in a big car? good luck with that, but I did warn you.

Purchased a brand new Chery J3 back in 2012 when they first came to Australia. 5 year unlimited kilometre warranty. Paid near 20k with the accessories fitted. Within 3 days it was back at the dealer workshop. Spent over 6 months waiting for all replacement parts from china that never arrived, The car was an absolute lemon. Can't forget the rust & asbestos in it! Traded it & got $4500 about 8 months in. The dealer I traded it to sold it wholesale for $1500. My mistake in purchasing it. Regardless of how much they have improved in 10 years I will NEVER buy another chinese car.

It's pure shit. The only good thing you have to say about is is a saving grace, in that for the price it looks somewhat like other modern slop that you can buy new.
Having an engine made in China that's small displacement and boosted is a recipe for disaster down the line. 1.5L making 154HP is a major red flag, Honda achieved 100HP per L of displacement naturally aspirated in the 90s. They have used a turbo to make up for the fact they are over 30 years behind the rest of the automakers. The additional heat and pressure the engine will be subjected to means you need more trust that the engineers know what they're doing, can you say that of some Chinese Government brand called Chery?
Additionally, it's very ugly and completely soulless. Chery as a name indicates the hollow nature of this effigy of a car - A mis-pronunciation of the word Chevy (GM has sued them for creating copies of their cars numerous times)
