I just brought one. I was originally looking for an small SUV but due to supply issues and huge price increases and my recent issues with a brand new Corolla which needed a new engine at 60,000km, I looked at both Haval Jolian and Chery Omoda 5. I loved the Omoda, great to drive with all the bells and whistles. I'm not a car critic or someone who racks up kms so was perfect for me. Time will tell
Good Luck with your own format Matt. I like the short references to the car's competition, all with frankness that personalises the review. Certainly enough facts but your gut feelings are worth hearing.
I was planning to purchase my 3rd BMW X2 ... then I looked at the Omoda-5. I have owned a 2023 Omoda-5 BX for 3 months, most current software update in place. My Aussie Omoda-5 isn't badged as CHERY with the stick-on lettering on the rear light ??? (Actually, UK & South Africa doesn't badge as CHERY, just Omoda-5) 1. I absolutely love the front seats, way more comfortable than my previous BMW X2 seats. 2. More comfortable suspension and more powerful acceleration. Some acceleration lag at first until I got used to driving the car. 3. More body roll than my previous BMW X2 but more comfortable drive all-round. Steering is light and very easy to u-turn. 4. Very happy with interior materials, although right arm/elbow rest could be softer. 5. The driver fatigue monitor works fine for me, accurate and not over zealous. 6. Phone charge only works with compatible phones. My android A74 Oppo charges via USB cable and initiates the screen display. 7. I didn't opt for a sunroof, I want shade, not sun. (Sunroof comes with 360° camera + auto-open boot + passenger electronic seat adjustment + seat warmers ... for an extra $3,000). 8. The exterior design got me interested, the technology, 7yr warranty, 7yr fixed services, 7yr roadside assistance, sold me. 9. I'm using all the technology functions without turning anything off. I'm learning what the signals and sounds are alerting to. I think turning anything off is counterintuitive to what the car offers. Let the car teach you and enjoy all the technology it has to offer. (While available, I'm not using the ACC hands-free driving much. I feel 2 hands on the wheel is better than no hands 😉) interestingly, the car is making me a better driver. 10. The 'lane correction assist' can feel a little abrupt at first but you get used to it and it's a good safety addition. 11. Fuel: ... on highway 7.1L ... around town 8.1/100km, I'm not a lead foot. 12. I don't find it hotter than any other car ??? In fact the external Engine-start-by-key is great to have the AC running prior to getting in. 13. Lastly, I was very happy that the car's speed limit could be set on the vehicle like my previous BMW X2. Set the speed limit at ?kms and the car will not drive any faster unless you choose to flatten the accelerator to override it for passing etc. A Godsend to avoid speeding tickets. I give my Omoda-5 Saturn Silver (charcoal metallic, no red accents) BX 9.5/10 👍
@@therightcar it's interesting that I believed I was in a "high-class build" car, owning BMWs. If it wasn't for the Omoda-5 coming along I may have never come to terms that I was paying too much for too little.
It's a mistake to always refer to Chinese cars as "cheap". Remember as China is basically the world's factory, many components in western cars are made in China and transported at huge cost and labour is much cheaper in China. So Chinese cars are cost reflecting be rather than cheap as supply chain costs are much lower. It's also not fair to refer to the T-Cross without also referring to the cheap and nasty plastic therein. As for the tech, most people just turn off the irritating stuff anyway.

Good honest review, thanks Matt. Just a point you can order the EX in midnight blue without the red bling. We have signed up for an EX after going in to look at a 4 year old Tucson highlander that was 4k more expensive and had not much warranty left. The Warranty, price and features is what sold it to us. Time will tell if it ends up being reliable or not. I suspect over the time there may be a few software updates to sort some of the bugs. Hell my expensive Samsung mobile seems to have an update every other week. :)
For a little bit more ($35k) get a Mazda cx30. 2litre engine, no crap turbo to fail. Proper auto transmission not cvt. Extremely high quality, excellent handling with comfortable compliant suspension. It will last much longer with less depreciation. Just check its not too small for your needs.
@@therightcar That's right. Mazda has been pushing prices higher for a while (doing their best to lose market share despite having decent cars)... the cheapest official special for a CX-30 right now is $35,990 drive-away.

My jaw literally dropped when I first saw the Omoda 5 at the dealer. Looked like a prestige car from a far, a Lexus perhaps. The test drive was not bad, coming from a 10 y.o. Micra, any small SUV of today will be a better drive. But something inside my head told me not to sign the contract yet. Moved on to Honda's CRV run out. I don't care if the infotainment is antiquated, I only listen to a.m. talk back radio, can't be bothered with Apple car play etc. I don't care if the gear knob and instrument panel are so 1990's - I like that the shifter is easy to grip and I can see the speedo without my glasses. The garmin sat nav is also important to me and I love that it's the same classic screen. I don't understand why a Thai made 1.5 li turbo + CVT combo is so much better. The driving dynamics, quietness and heaps of cabin space are bonus. Ended up buying the CRV because it's '"The Right Car" for me. Anyway, in the future I might still buy this Omoda for my daughter.
To be fair Chery makes much better cars than this, the Tiggo series of vehicles are quite good. The Omada is their latest global model and I guess they reckon showing their new thing to return to a market was the best move. The boot space is crap though, a Vitara which is a smaller vehicle a class down has a more practical and spacious boot than this(I suspect thats the case because the rear takes a bit of a deep dip down making it much shorter than rivals, remember this is in the same class as a S Cross or Seltos). I am intrigued that this uses a CVT, usually Chineese vehicles are turbo petrol with a 7 speed wet dct. Overall for the first time I am in agreement with our presenter, its a meh and coming from him who normally hates Chineese cars for one reason or another, thats high praise. Its a comfortable Chineese car that you can look into if you really arent into their dcts and can live with the quirks.
This CVT gearbox is a product developed and manufactured by Chery itself. The performance is close to the Honda cvt gearbox. Higher-level models will use a powertrain of 1.6TGDi (torque 290N.M) + 7 speed wet dct (provided by GEtrag). Due to the excellent tuning, you will think that you are driving an AT gearbox car. And it also has an AWD model, and the rear wheel suspension uses a 4-link structure.
Thank you for considering me “our” presenter. As for me not generally liking Chinese cars - have you watched my GWM Ora and GWM Tank 300 reviews? I liked both of those cars. So please don’t generalise. I don’t like Jolion because it’s not a good enough car, and I didn’t really like this car, for much the same reasons. I'm so grateful these cheap cars come to Australia as it means people who used to only be able to afford a second hand car can now own an affordable brand new car with so many great features. You could say if you pay a few more thousands you could get a better one, but that is the case in most instances. I know you probably don't like Chinese made cars. What I see is they are stepping into the future so that they can equip all these cars with the laitest tech but at a low cost. I have been watching your video for a long time. I hope you could review it for different types of people. I believe you will have a lot more interesting points of view to bring rather than let the story end so fast.
Driver fatigue warning is absolutely making you crazy every 4-5seconds.. beeping and nothing on screen so you cant see any info from screen.. it s so annoying and unsafe.. this thing shouldnt be sale in Aus at the first place..
I think it’s cheap to make a mark in the marketplace. And of course the brand is trying to establish itself once more. I think they’re actually hoping that no-one remembers “last time” they were here.
Please name me any other car Brand that's not from China that's 35k or 38K SUV with air vents for the rear passengers and sunroof or panoramic roof thanks I'll wait they have no competition
You used to be able to get a Renault Arkana with sunroof and rear vents for that much. Prices rose, though. But you’ve got a point. And if that’s why you’re buying a new car, then good luck to you.
And you're getting a Volkswagen!! = Worse after sales service in Australia and questionable electronics. Toyota Yaris X = Boring as batshit and yesterday's tech at today's prices. Time will tell how the Chery stands up, but I think they will sell well>
It's cheap but not cheap enough to be good value. If you must have a new car with a warranty it may be worth a punt. For me, the value, the small boot, the CVT and that is unproven as a product and its support in Australia means I won't be buying one any time soon.
Chery is shrugging off "CHEAP and UNRELIABLE Chinese car". It's offering more features, quality , technology, safety and reliability to its product lineups. This is a good news to consumer amid of hyper inflation.
Thanks for the review Matt! The “quirks” of this SUV would have me looking at a Corolla Cross with less spec and a bit more money with way more peace of mind.
@@therightcar You mentioned a Vitara(albeit its not a direct competitor with this) I AM SHOCKED!😮 . Still given current market conditions I wouldnt recommend the Carolla Cross as anything with a Toyota Badge is just too hot now and you probably wont get it until the next facelift arrives a year or so from now. I would more recommend the ASX, S Cross or Jolion
Why do you call it cheap there are no cheap cars anymore even used cars cost more then their worth paying around $30000 is not cheap for any average wage australia. Other then that i enjoy your info and test drives keep it up thank you.
These cars have recently gone on sale in Britain... I've seen some reviews already, and it appears to be a typical, underdeveloped, so so Chinese car. It's got the styling to catch people's attention, but underneath it isn't as well sorted as many European rivals. It's cheap for a reason.... some of these Chinese offerings seem to have a superficial quality, which helps them sell, but the quality often doesn't endure.....
Another cheap boring FWD sport utility vehicle smells like regular gas I ever saw does it come with roof rails for cosmetic display since Chery worst FWD J1, J3 & J11 I've ever seen? Like it or not go to one way ticket to public transportation.
@@therightcar well except for the warranty, servicing, oil burning, dubious reliability ( water pump and chain guide failure), criminal emissions failure. They do have a great interior but not enough inclusions. And we haven't got to boring (unless gti) which is a grenade. Vw is not the reliable alternative Australians want.
I honestly prefer the looks of the current ASX to the new PHEV thats around the corner which is basically a rebadged Renault Captur. That thing looks so much softer and less practical(and not just because its a PHEV) than its predecessor which is a tough, practical and purposeful car.
A cheap ugly clown car. The red accents are an embarrassment. It’s a poor copy a Lexus front and rear end. I will give it marks for the interior design but it will not wear well.
As most cars with plush interiors wont. Alot of persons(mainly car journos) complain about hard scratchy plastics, but chances are those plastics arent going to crystallize after a year or so in the sun and are easier to clean. Sure a plush interior is great to look at and great to poke everyday, at least for a couple of months until you start sweating in it.

Australia may need another cheap car, but definately not Chery Omoda 5. It is an absolute garbage. What a waste of money it was
This car is always watching you I love the jelly fish roof.
Driver fatigue warning is absolutely making you crazy every 4-5seconds.. beeping and nothing on screen so you cant see any info from screen.. it s so annoying and unsafe.. this thing shouldnt be sale in Aus at the first place..
Yeah a few people feel that way!
Test driving a Chery next week, fingers n toes it's not a lemon 😅
Let us know how you find it!
Is the price cheap to win back customers due to poor rep last time?
I think it’s cheap to make a mark in the marketplace. And of course the brand is trying to establish itself once more. I think they’re actually hoping that no-one remembers “last time” they were here.
Please name me any other car Brand that's not from China that's 35k or 38K SUV with air vents for the rear passengers and sunroof or panoramic roof thanks I'll wait they have no competition
You used to be able to get a Renault Arkana with sunroof and rear vents for that much. Prices rose, though.
But you’ve got a point. And if that’s why you’re buying a new car, then good luck to you.
Hyundai venue?
so its heated seats? no cooling?
I bought Omoda S5 sedan and it's much spacier than this c5 model. The baggage department is 460 liters and a lot of leg room
Great & honest review mate
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.
Any other japanese or western car at that price level can match omoda in all aspect?
There aren’t any because they spent more on engineering 🤣
Why are Chery not bringing small evs to Australia? There are no emission standards in Australia. That's why.
They are going to bring a small EV within 10 months.
And you're getting a Volkswagen!! = Worse after sales service in Australia and questionable electronics.
Toyota Yaris X = Boring as batshit and yesterday's tech at today's prices.
Time will tell how the Chery stands up, but I think they will sell well>
Which color is this?
I think it’s Mercurial Grey.
PS like most things annoying at first, you usually get used to them and they are not the problem you originally thought.
Not for me but seems like a decent option!
It’s going to be right for someone.
You just ruined this car but any way I think is better than the t cross ... Is a just a matter of subjectivity
It's cheap but not cheap enough to be good value. If you must have a new car with a warranty it may be worth a punt. For me, the value, the small boot, the CVT and that is unproven as a product and its support in Australia means I won't be buying one any time soon.
I saw one today. And one yesterday. Different cars in different places. They obviously didn’t watch my (or any other) review.
What’s the warranty with the vw
Five-year/unlimited km
7yrs, 10k service cap each yr and 7yrs road side assist. I went to the chery shops and they showed me. Each service is less than $300
Sounds like a steal, but will it last🤔
Hmmm. The warranty is good. But it’s a roll of the dice.
Thanks for the comment. And yes, that’s what I’d be doing. Or a Yaris Cross. Or T-Cross. Or a Vitara. Or any number of alternatives.
Corolla Cross has 12 month+ waits? I’m guessing this thing would be way less of a wait?
@@paulsciacca6126 if your lucky some dealers are quoting 2 years but you can deal with a scalper
The Toyota's have the most boring interiors, sorry to say , sorry
Why do you call it cheap there are no cheap cars anymore even used cars cost more then their worth paying around $30000 is not cheap for any average wage australia. Other then that i enjoy your info and test drives keep it up thank you.
It is comparatively cheap. But thank you!
Price is good so people will buy it.
It is cheap.
I hear you. And that all seems right! Cheap; but maybe not real value.
Another cheap boring FWD sport utility vehicle smells like regular gas I ever saw does it come with roof rails for cosmetic display since Chery worst FWD J1, J3 & J11 I've ever seen? Like it or not go to one way ticket to public transportation.
Apparently the electric model of this is coming.
About average. Not great. Not overly terrible. Needs to do a lot better
Yeah it’s hard to make an impression when you’re just okay.
Why didn't u say German or Italian cars "expensive" ?
European implies expensive.
Wow 😂😂I totally Disagree with you... anyway I get it it's political the most bias review ever
You’re so wrong mate. This car isn’t good enough in 2023.
Absolutely not. Long warranty and tech on paper is all people care about. Engineering appears to be horrific.
Hi what small suv would you recommend for a single woman in her twenties
Where are you based? And what’s the budget?
@@therightcar thank you for your response
I live in Geelong in Victoria and my budget is 32000
@@therightcar hi please respond whenever you get time
This is typical of Chinese car. Gives you lots of cherries but unfortunately the cherries are unripe and rather sour when you taste them.
"Does Australia need ANOTHER expensive petrol SUV from Germany?"
I dunno. Does it?
Don't worry Germany won't be making cars in the future, their whole economy is bout to crash 😂
I think it’s a great value. Latest tech and brand new with 7 years warranty.
Matt actually recommends a vw over this. For the love of God.
Why wouldn’t I? VW makes great cars.
@@MikeJones-mz5igand failing dq200 in most of the small segments 🤣🤣
@@MikeJones-mz5igHe's being paid to do that. You can tell there's nothing good he pointed out about this car.
@@bonganipeter9433the reviews are generally good. But he loves VAG when we all know their pitfalls. Expensive pitfalls.
these cars are only sellnig for 20k in china , yet, they sell double the price in Australia, what a rip off
Your getting a vw who cheated on diesel emissions
I like the car.
Well done.
Lol I think you wanted to talk bad about it you didn’t point anything good
It's hard to point out anything good when there's a lot more bad stuff evident...
That’s a lot of tech for the price.
It's sadly not a lot of "great driving car" for the money.
😂you're really pushing an agenda against this car. Good luck. People will buy this car though. @therightcar
XUV not SUV surely ?
As in X for Crossover?
We don’t use that terminology that much in Australia. And it’s categorised as an SUV.
Not buying a Chinese car.
Okay!
nah
A Volkswagen is not a good thing. Shit engines and transmissions. Money pits after the warranty
That thing is a lottttt uglier then Mitsubishi's design language. That is impressive.
Ha! Beauty is in the eye of the beholder …?
I honestly prefer the looks of the current ASX to the new PHEV thats around the corner which is basically a rebadged Renault Captur. That thing looks so much softer and less practical(and not just because its a PHEV) than its predecessor which is a tough, practical and purposeful car.
The thin metal roof is off-putting,wonder thickness rest of metal
I was surprised by it.
Not for me, I’d rather get a used option from Japanese manufacturers.
Thanks for sharing!
@@therightcar you did a great job highlighting major weaknesses like the roof. Great review!
You always start with a bias 😅
Chery is a nono
I tend to agree.
Stupid tech? I dont think so.
Okay champ
Harsh review.
Honest. The word you’re looking for is honest.
@therightcar You're pushing a campaign against the chinese cars. It is clear mate.
....it looks.....'French'.
That’s offensive to the French.
@@therightcar .....oh, I don't mind.... it's a minor hobby.
@@therightcar....but, that said it's design apart from too much screen, it does aesthetic appeal....in a French kind of way.
There are too many better small suv,s I wouldn't buy one of these.
It’s true.
Looks fake and gimmicky
Fake?
@@therightcar Yeah like a Chinese Rolex
A cheap ugly clown car. The red accents are an embarrassment. It’s a poor copy a Lexus front and rear end. I will give it marks for the interior design but it will not wear well.
As most cars with plush interiors wont. Alot of persons(mainly car journos) complain about hard scratchy plastics, but chances are those plastics arent going to crystallize after a year or so in the sun and are easier to clean. Sure a plush interior is great to look at and great to poke everyday, at least for a couple of months until you start sweating in it.
Wow! Harsh, but I guess that’s your opinion.
Yeah, the interior has all the glitz and glam elements. Who knows how it’ll last.
