  • During this video I question why Canon don’t make a digital mirrorless medium format camera and could there be one in development?
Back in the 1980s there were many superb medium format film camera systems: Hasselblad 500cm, Mamiya RB67, Mamiya RZ67 MKII, Mamiya 645, Bronica ETRS, Bronica SQ, Pentax 645 and 6x7 and cameras like the mighty Fuji GX680II, to name a few, so I can understand why Canon would be hesitant to compete, choosing instead to focus on their 35mm models like the professional F1, the A1, AE1 Programme etc.
Given Canon nave nailed the full-frame mirrorless camera market with, arguably, the best full frame professional camera (R5 MKII) with colour science that is way better than anybody else’s (even Hasselblad) and the best glass with the latest RF range of lenses and of course their incredible cinema cameras, like the EOS C80 6K full-frame offering and their great cinema cameras that came before this, surely now is the time for Canon to develop a medium format mirrorless system to compete with the Fuji and Hasselblad offerings. They could even use the same 100 megapixel Sony-made sensor that is found in both the Fuji and Hasselblad models. Canon have the tech to make a superb medium format camera and they could certainly nail the lenses, even leaf-shutter lenses, especially if they use the same leaf shutter system that Hasselblad use, which is not made by Hasselblad indecently.
I know there would not be as much money in the medium format market for Canon, being more niche etc, but Canon have gone after the RED and Blackmagic cinema camera market already, just look at the Canon EOS C80 6K full-frame cinema camera, surely a Canon medium format digital mirrorless camera would sell more than Canon’s cinema cameras?

I agree. I must admit that is one of the few things that I like about the latest Hasselblad X2D, it only does photography. Dedicated stills cameras are rare, but I like the sound of that.

I'd love to See a Medium format Canon camera that works with my existing set of RF lenses.

wont work, rf lenses wont cover a 6 x4.5 format..

When Nikon introduced the Z mount Matt Irwin pointed out that the throat size is big enough to accommodate a "medium format" sensor. Medium format in quotes because cameras like the Fujifilm GFX 100 are still only about 48 x 36 mm, whereas a medium format film camera is 60 mm on one side, with a number different measurements for t'other. 60 x 45, 60 x 60, 60 x 90, and so on.
However, as someone (or was it you?) pointed out the RED acquisition is probably keeping Nikon pretty busy at the moment, and they, together with the other manufacturers, would have to have a good hard think about the potential market.

Cinema cameras has to be a bigger niche than MF would ever be. Film production is a huge industry.

As an architecture photographer, I would love to see this. I wouldn't be surprised if some of their high-end lenses already cover a medium format sensor-I know that the Canon tilt-shifts work well on the Fuji GFX cameras. Even if it wasn't the same size sensor as a GFX, I would love to see a taller, higher-resolution sensor in the current RF mount... Take a high-res 35mm sensor, add some height to it (4x3 aspect ratio) and keep the RF mount. That would go a long way to keeping me from just switching to Fujifilm. That and finally releasing the RF mount tilt-shift lenses!!!

I've already switched to Fujifilm. 102 MP. What a beauty!

Excellent suggestion, especially because of Canon's dual-pixel AF which does outperform Fuji cameras AF. It would be interesting if they could also adapt some of their RF lenses for the larger sensor.

I think it would be great. I would also like to see just a dedicated stills camera as I am only marginally interested in video and that seems to be all they are pushing in their cameras now.

I will like to see a medium format from them so long as they will make an adapter to enable RF lenses adaptations

You think or know RF would cover the MF image circle?

There is a reason why lenses like rf 85L cover larger than full frame sensor. First is for 8ev ibis second is for medium format without ibis.

Smartphones are attacking... I think, that trend will be on making cheaper medium format camera. Fuji already did it with their GFX under €10k... Back in 2010s all this monsters like Hasselblad H were 20k and above. Only Pentax 645D/Z was 10k

interesting topic. my take its driven by commercial potential, the revenue that it may bring in versus damaging existing revenue stream, they dont want to compete with their own camera dept. best take is to look at Nikon's medium format foray, if any. last time i heard, there was patent filed Nikon on medium format lens or something, that would be a first indication if there are any serious effort going that direction. when Nikon goes medium format, i bet you that Canon wont be far off when that happen, either acquire an existing or former medium format company OR joint venture with medium format company like PENTAX as a starter before launching off. just my 2 cents

Doubtful. The new camera design would have to target two niches equally well: DMF stills & cine. And beat the competition (esp Fuji) on price:performance. New lens range development would be loss making, so adapters (or mounts if licences) for existing lenses by Fuji, Phase One, Hasselblad, Leica. Sony make most DMF sensors - even they did not venture into a full system!

The cinema cameras aren’t niche since they don’t need a new line of lenses / lens mount… whereas a MF camera would.
Annoyingly, Canon’s cameras have really pivoted towards hybrid/video… if they cared about high end stills they’d first deliver a 60mpix competitor to the Sony a7rv/Leica SL3. Also Canon have removed the pixel shift high res mode from the R5ii and replaced it with software upressing too - perplexing! There so much more Canon could do in Full Frame to deliver a more stills centric studio/landscape camera.
With 35mm format lenses 1 to 2 stops faster than the fastest MF lenses from Fuji and Hasselblad, I’m just not convinced that you need the extra sensor dimensions for that low depth of field ‘medium format look’. I think the reason Fuji and Hasselblad went ‘Medium Format’ (really it’s not that large a sensor) is more about marketing. Hasselblad/DJI has always been in that space… and if Fuji had entered 35mm full frame they’d have killed their APSc line.

4:22 Well, not three, but five, and that's at least: Leica S, S2, S3, and now they're preparing to release a new model and optics for it. Then PENTAX 645 Z 51.4 MP, so to be more precise, these are not three variants/models.

I get what you are saying, but I didn’t mention the Pentax 645Z as nobody buys into that Pentax system. I know a few guys that work at a few different photographic stores (UK admittedly) and they say the just don’t sell, everybody goes Fuji or Hasselblad hence my not putting Pentax into the equation. I loved the Pentax 645 film camera from 1986, but this modern digital version is just not selling for them. I’m surprised the Pentax system is still being advertised to be honest, unless they just have stock that they need to get shot of, but that stock is not going because nobody buys their cameras anymore. There will almost certainly come a point when the Pentax 645 drops off the map - I suspect.
Regarding Leica, I didn’t mention those because they are not what I would call medium format, they are more half way between full frame and even the smallest medium format Hasselblad/Fuji sensors and a mile away from the Phase One iQ4 back.
Yes, the Leica S3 is a 64 MP 30 x 45mm sensor with a 3:2 aspect ratio and although on a par with the Fuji/Hasselblad regarding sensor size, thus medium format, Leica are a strange bunch. The S3 cost £16,500 body only and the S lenses are around £4,500 each. Given the body is double that of a Hasselblad X2D and Fuji GFX 100 II and the Leica lenses are a bit more than Hasselblad lenses and 30 to 40 percent more than the Fuji offerings I don’t see Leica as been in the medium format arena to be honest. Leica have a few very, very, very niche puddle of customers, doctors, enthusiastic lawyers etc that need to write off tens of thousands of pounds who buy a Leica S3, or any other Leica for that matter. Leica seem to do everything they possibly can to keep sales and customers to a niche minimum - it’s what they do best.
For this video I'm talking about the main players, Fuji, Hasselblad and Phase One, in that order in terms of sales and popularity.

Medium Format, is a niche market, which is already held by, Fuji, Hasselblad, Leica, Phase One, if canon does, it might adapt to all if not most of their lens

Didn't Sony patented a 53.5mmx40mm 200mp curved medium format sensor and a few lenses? If anyone, they could be the ones bringing a larger sensor than 44x33. I wish a larger than 44x33 mirrorless camera and I don't care if is Sony, Nikon, Canon... :)

    • @tecraven
      @tecraven  5 วันที่ผ่านมา

No idea about the Sony-patented thing. Nikon bought the Red camera company recently for USD 85 million so, I suspect, Nikon will be concentrating on that so given Nikon now own Red to take care of the cinema side of things and given Canon already have a cinema range of cameras if anyone has the resources and time to go medium format I'd suspect Canon are still the forerunners. I like the Phase One 645 format, larger sensor than the Hasselblad and 151 megapixels too. If Canon did this with leaf shutter lenses I'd be all over it, well, if I won the lottery anyway ;)

Medium Format would be nice if a larger sensor is required ? L Series Lense's let in more light. But most pictures are taken by cell phones ? Many camera's are chewing away at the full frame camera market . Canon could go to the L series Lenses ? With Social Media you can use any camera ! Printed image are suffering from Social Media. Printing is fading !
