Simply amazing captures of the seagull and the eagles. Great picture quality by the Canon R5 mk2 in that weather. Thanks for sharing what that camera can do for a skilled photographer.
I don't know about you, so I'll speak for myself. Thirty years ago, I wouldn't have even thought about how the weather was, just get after it ! Funny how things change with time.... Nice presentation, thank you !! Cheers,
Great video Beautiful footage Mine just shipped and I’m excited for the upgrade from my R6 Lots of birds here in eastern TN and I’m looking forward to milking every ounce of sharpness out of my Sigma 150-600
I live in Kenai on the river and own an R5ii and R5. I was really impressed with your eagle and gull work. I'm currently in Ohio but will return Sept 29th. Love to meet you. Keep up the great work... JoeRay Skrha
Greetings from the UK! Amazing footage and pictures and great to seeing you looking so well again 👍. Alaska looks an amazing place. I’m shooting with the R7 and enjoying it despite its well documented limitations. As things stand getting hold of an R5m2 is going to mean a very long wait. I’m still waiting for the 200-800 lens on order for many months! I’ve rented out the R5 and enjoyed it and have been considering buying it as prices seem to be softening slowly. In your opinion do the enhanced AF and other improved features of the Mk2 make it worth the anticipated 6 month+ wait and the significantly higher cost, or might it be better to buy the original R5? Appreciate your thoughts. Many thanks.
I would say yes it is worth it. The 'limitations' one the r7 are overblown the same as a lot of the complaints on the MKII really. Just judge by your use and take all of us talking heads with a grain of salt 😄
I love my 5ii! Pre capture is a great feature. As far as noise is concerned if I need to clean up a file I run it through Topaz. I have used this camera in all kinds of light conditions with no problem. Couple that with the outstanding AF and I’m a happy camper. And this is coming from a solid Nikon shooter.😊
R5II is awesome. The pre-capture is game changing in Canon world. Better AF. New battery lasts a bit longer. I got 6000 shots when the battery is about 15 %. Image looks a bit sharper than R5. Noise is about the same. I wish I had the money to get another R5II.
No it's not. It's almost the same in ECS. IM using this camera back to back with the R5 and the images are almost identical on noise. And you have to get your exposure correct to see the correct noise difference vs just tossing higher and high ISO at a camera to judge noise.
@@WILDALASKA I agree. I don’t notice noise difference between the two cameras. Why would Canon make a new camera worse than its predecessor? Some people don’t even have R5II and make some weird claims based upon TH-cam reviews.
@@Lowns_300 narcissistic? Wow. It is only my opinion about a camera. Whatever, you don’t like it but I like it. Why don’t you sell the R5II? Some people want it.
I am very curious if the R5II will perform well if you don’t own a prime lens. Currently using an R7 with EF 100-400II, and an RF 800mm. I am hesitant to upgrade the body, if the low light performance isn’t great, and I lose the crop factor of the R7. What would you recon? Greetings!
It performs great. I use the 200-800 quite a bit with it. AND the low light performance of the camera is great. Watch out for click bait subjects on all the tech stuff. I use the mKII in the same crap light as I did the r5 and the z8/z9's.
Great video! Really enjoy your content. That would have been difficult to get the shots with the egg tossing without precapture for sure. There’s always compromise with things in life and camera gear is no different. I’ve found my mii doesn’t handle higher ISO’s as well as the original R5 but has lots of other things to offer that are upgrades from original. I’m not using auto ISO anymore and just need to be more aware of getting exposure right in camera. I think I just wasn’t paying as much attention to exposures with the original version as it is so good and files were quite easily fixed as long as they aren’t over exposed. Thanks for your content it’s really helpful and inspiring.
Thanks. - Couple things. The ISO performance is not that much off the R5. Im using them back to back and my shooting partners were still on the r5. Same settings on shots as the end results are almost identical. Second stop shooting ISO lol. I understand why, but getting out of auto will help get some better images. We are popping 10k ISO images and very little if any differences in the end results.
@@WILDALASKAnoted on the auto ISO😉. Not sure what your thoughts are on the possibility of Adobe not having the profiles dialed in yet for the R5ii files. I seem to remember it took a few months for them to get the profile dialed in for the original R5. Anyway I’m totally happy with the Mii - absolutely love it!
Wonderful! The eagle photos are incredible! Your ISO of 800 wasn't high at all. I shoot manual with Auto ISO. I will say that I noticed, immediately, that the R5 II chooses a much higher ISO than the R5 ever did. Settings for the R5 II are very different. If I want to avoid noisy photos, I'm using exposure compensation more often or lowering my shutter speed. You were shooting with an f/4 lens which makes a huge difference. I'm shooting with the 100-500 at f/7.1. Try this combo in low light and the difference will scream at you. You mentioned in a previous video that we can see the distance of the subject in the exif data of the photo. Is there a setting that needs to be enabled somewhere in the menu for this to be captured? As always, thank you for your content and sharing your knowledge. I look forward to your videos.
Thanks! Ok get OUT of auto iso. Even the R5 chooses stupid numbers. It's the first thing I work with on folks who shoot with me when they ask for advice, etc. Getting out of any Auto modes that is. We are out shooting the MKII and R5 daily and the ISO difference for real world shooting is very close. 10k ISO shots show almost no difference as long as everyone got the exposure right. Shooting the 200-800 also in these instances usually. I personally hated my R5 without using DXO. If I hadn't started using DXO I may have tossed it in the ocean lol. So im chomping at the bit for DXO to get the MKII added. The EXIF data you can get by opening the METADATA dropdown in LR and clicking Customize and adding Focus Distance form the Camera Info subgroup. With some 3rd party lenses it may not give you the distance.
@WILDALASKA Thank you so much for all of this advice. I definitely have to work more on getting out of Auto ISO. I know that will help a lot. I've just recently gotten over my fear of using LrC and have been editing with it, so I'll be sure to try out that distance trick. I shoot with both the 100-500 and the 200-800. I was using Topaz Denoise, which is not compatible with the R5 II. Waiting for DXO to work, then I'll buy that. Thanks again, Scott. I'm so happy that you are feeling so much better and are back to your travels around Alaska. Be well!
The bill looks quite small for Glaucous-Winged Gull. Lot's of caveats about gull ID being difficult in general, not knowing your local gulls, and not being able to judge size, but they feel closest to Short-Billed Gulls to me. PS The eagle shots are cool.
Bad light and low light are not the same thing, Bad light is no yellow light, heavy cloud cover (low in Alaska also) , fog, high wind, and wind across water at low level. Which means harder for autofocus to work and to get good exposure. Plus if you have low caught conditions you have to figure out how to get that iso low by balancing the rest of the triangle. And I shoot an f4 lens in these bad light conditions and not a f/6.3, 8, or 9 to keep that ISO lower for better quality in the end image
Great photos and video, thanks! So far, my experience with the R5 Mark II is that noise levels are noticeably higher than those of my R5 at anything higher than ISO 1600 and with a lot of color noise and artifacts. In fact, I have limited the auto ISO range to a maximum of ISO 3200 and am working on my settings to keep the ISO much lower than that. Which basically means slower shutter speeds, which means more blur, which means the need to take long bursts in the hope one shot is good. The pre focus is great and I am already getting results with that feature. Canon is concentrating on sports and "people" photography because that is where the money is. I will be keeping my R5 and using it in low light situations.
I’m doing the exact same thing. I think the two cameras will make a fantastic combination. I was using a R7 as my second camera because of the reach and the pre-capture but the noise and rolling shutter were a big problem. This new combination is great.
Thanks. I am using the R5 and MKII back to back. My shooting partners are shooting the R5 next to me and we are popping 10k ISO images and the resultant images are almost identical. And stop using auto ISO. 😄
The “Photons to photo” site shows the R5 II is about .25 stops less DR at ISO 12,800. But exposing to right (getting exposure correct in camera) I doubt you will see much of a noticeable difference.
@@WILDALASKAThanks for pointing this out. I’m surprised at how many people pass on camera because of DR rating. I think R5 II is amazing. That pre-burst is game changer. I leave mine on now about 95% of the time.
I ended up returning my R5 ii and rebought the R5. I just didn’t like the output compared to the R5 and couldn’t justify the expense when I just do photography and not video. I wanted to love it but I just wasn’t that impressed.
That's sad really. The ISO performance in the real world work is almost the same on the r5. We are shooting them back to back daily. 10k ISO images looks very similar. Not sure why you are experiencing different.
@@WILDALASKA well, I was frustrated but I decided to cancel my return and keep the r5 ii. I’m going to reset the camera settings and start over. I tried to find the comment that I left to delete it but couldn’t find it😂
The shot at 10:18 is very nice. For the eagles, looks like you didn't really have very low light as your shutter speed was always at or faster than 1/2000 and your ISO never above 1600. I haven't used the camara but for what I have seen the IQ/dynamic range is not close to the R5 when shotting at much higher ISO values. Nevertheless, it is good to know that the quality is great in these conditions; thanks for sharing.
Thanks. IM shooting a f4 lens also, remember that. I never stated low light we are talking about BAD light. No yellow light ( all grey), rain, fog, and high wind. This all means hard to get exposure, atmospheric distortion, haze, etc. But the light conditions were very bad also. Just short of twilight conditions. The unedited images were a but underexposed also to reduced the blowout chances on the whites of the birds. Raised those in post and a lot of room to push it even with no noise reduction added as DXO is not usable yet for the MKII.
Thanks for your wonderful warm enthusiasm, for life and for our mutual camera. I'm feeling a little of both!
