To me it seems like games aren't really improving, but they give that illusion because of constant "quality of life" changes without actually addressing the underlying issues or improving the core features. Quality of life is very nice, but it feels like bandaid after bandaid being slapped on.
I think the game dev meta shifted somewhere along the way from devs going all in on game mechanics to devs going all in on graphics and cosmetics. Now we have very pretty, broken games chock full of predatory monetization techniques. I miss the days where they would tell a story and make a fun game that I actively wanted to throw money at.
