  • What an experience! Going down the Baja peninsula to race the famous Baja 1000, was amazing! Although faced with challenges every step of building the race car, we still managed to get down and across the starting line. I’m grateful for the friends I got to share this trip with and with you for watching!

It usually takes two or three attempts before you actually finish a Baja race. You keep trying and you’ll be hooked. The first time I met you in your dad’s shop, you were just building the Morrvair and I was returning to Washington from my race in Baja.

You are right, the race is no joke. To take an untested rig there was really sporty. Ya’ll learned a lot and the team pulled together to stretch as far as you could. What an adventure.

I have to admit, when I saw this video was over an hour long, I was going to skip it. BUT.... Because I have always had a fascination with the Baja 1000 (and Paris Dakar Rally) I said lets see what this is about. Hands down your best video yet! I was hooked and would have watched another hour of it. Sorry you guys didn't even last one day but honestly, many new teams go through this. Now you know what to focus on to repair the Jeep. Get out and do some more local events. Fine tune it and get back out there next year with one goal... make it to the end. It doesn't make a difference where you wind up in placing or how many hours behind you are, just make it to the end. I look forward to seeing the future progress of this.

It’s a desert racing series with most races in utah (wendover, knolls, and vernal) also with races in Nevada and western Colorado! It’s a small series that’s absolutely mint for getting seat time. I’ve raced it for years in a class one car and our jeepspeed unlimited truck(it’s how I learned the ropes when I first started). I think it would be great for your team! 25 years ago me and a couple of friends built a dessert racer. Our primary concern was to eliminate as much electrical needs as possible. When all said and done, our truck had 27 individual pieces of wire. I used a Borg-Warner T-20 trans, with a 205 transfer. Rockwell axles with manual steering. This vid shows why I made every one of those choices. The truck still races today, it's had one more auxillary power system routed since then, for lighting and navigation.
I've always thought the KISS principal was the king when it comes to racing.
I can easily maintain 90 mph with my 400 horse power coming out of my normally aspirated small block chevy.
But hey, if you're into breaking down, use your modern stuff. I won't, I like finishing races.
    Have fun all.

@@evictioncarpentry2628 arguably is the key word there. RAD jeep is crappier than the Raptor by miles. Few miles and overheated? Trans line burst not even 100miles in? If the Raptor is crappier, then it would not even cross the start line.
Ford has dedicated RnD with a bunch of engineers to create a truck that can go Baja. Years of tests and works. The jeep? 6months and change building it after work, tested only a few weeks at best after build. If anything, the stock jeep will actually do better than the custom build just like the Raptor.

I used to co-pilot for my Brother in law with Becker and Sons racing in the early 2000s back before computer controlled crap ( i like manually controlled stuff it generally works and you can fix it) we ran the Baja and Mint and a few others it's tough sport. We ran Ford Rangers and never really did well untill we ran a Ford 150 Trophy Truck and got serious about the race. I will say I am NOT a huge proponet of electric fans in offroad and even drag and drive events I see too many problems with them and too many cars out because of them. The other thing we did was go to Lake LA and pre-run the truck hard there before going to any race to shake down the truck. Going that far with an unproven rig is a huge chance to be taking. Back then the locals used to set booby traps for the racers like digging a huge hole etc. if you were out in BFE and see a bunch of locals standing around a certain area better watch out for a trap. Never trust locals for directions or anything, they think it's funny to get you lost or hurt. Better luck next year and you need to have a past Baja contestant go over the jeep and give you some pointers and help. you need to run a Vegas etc. race close to home before the next Baja to prove out that jeep. Glad you are all safe. We also used to fly down prior to the race and rent a jeep and get the extra ins. and pre-run the course and we also hired a fixed wing aircraft or better yet helicopter to watch over us during the race and we also rented Sat. phones for communications between the truck and pit crews. We finally quit because it was costing the Brother in law 10k or more per race to prepare and travel expences etc. and pay for upkeep and fuel on the Big Rig and Race Trailer etc. he finally sold everything a bought a vacation home.

This is so sweet to be able to watch basically the behind the scenes in car view of the Baja 1000.. So wild how many regular vehicles are on the road @ the beginning & how many vehicles & people were on the dirt trails getting/being in the way of the race vehicles causing them to lose alot of momentum, speed & increased race time

From my racing experience, with a new engine, finding the right fan blade that can pull the air in can take some experiments. I didn't really think about it until it was a problem. Good luck 👍

Great race guys, 6 months prep, are you kidding me? Guys spending a million bucks just for bragging rights are already preparing for next year's race. Congratulations! You've inspired us, I think we'll see you down there in a couple years. We're thinking a jeep like your dad's 😊

Man what an awesome experience! I’ve wanted to run Baja for the last 40 years but haven’t gotten to yet . Y’all did great for no experience and only a short time to build the truck .
