    I think the Accent WRC's lack of love compared to the Octavia WRC is partly because Hyundai never gave us a performance version for the road, whereas the Octavia had both the VRS and the 1.8t 4x4.
    The Hyundai was JUST a rally car, with no road version worth lusting after.

    • @piotrmalewski8178
      @piotrmalewski8178 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      I think part of the problem is that unlike Skoda, Hyundai has never had a serious battle for top positions against stronger brands. Add to that, Octavia was a bit too big, too long and it required very very agressive and spectacular driving style to make it change direction, where's Hyundai was more compact, and theoretically should have been a better platform.
      Performance wise, Accent's trouble not related to body stiffness at all, as this was easily handled with extensive rollcage and additional weldings. The real problem was that Hyundai's team simply did not have budget to develop active differentials, which were a big game changer at the time, and it may have also lacked power. Theoretically all cars were limited to 300 BHP, but this was done solely with fixed size turbo restrictor, and unofficially there were strong rumors that even with this restrictors top cars reached 450 horsepower.

    You have to take a look at this car's predecessor: the Hyundai Coupe F2 Kit Car. It was the sole entrant at the 1998 F2 WRC category and somehow managed to finish 2nd at the championship... Surely a harbinger of things to come.
    Also, a funny anecdote: during their last year, the Korean management wanted to save money by a) having the team camp outdoors during the race, instead of booking hotel rooms and b) not having a co-driver, as only one person actually drove the car! Alas, they went the sensible way and saved money by not paying MSD.

  • @MrLolx2u
    @MrLolx2u หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    That wasn't the only point tbh.
    Skoda has always been involved in rallying since their inception of making cars in the 1930s and even during the Commie Bloc era. Once the Berlin Wall fell, Skoda was acquired by VW but that didn't stop them at all. Instead, they went with the puny Felicia and slot it into the F2 class of the WRC and surprisingly won quite alot of rounds when they entered it in 1995 and was only consistently beaten overall by Seat and their kit cars. Thus, from that development cycle, they slotted the Octavia into the big game and tested it out thus by then, everyone knew who Skoda was thus the Octavia was just a "big" star for rally fans.
    Hyundai on the other hand, was different. It was a relatively unknown brand to motorsport thus no one blip an eye to remember what it was. It wasn't until the domination of the i20N that everyone suddenly remembered about the Accent WRC.
    Consequently, Skoda didn't quit rally at all unlike Hyundai after their failed attempt. Instead, Skoda went down with the Fabia and even when that failed, they quit WRC top flight altogether BUT AGAIN... Not for long as with the introduction of WRC2, Skoda knew that if they can't fight with the top dogs, they'll go for lower championship still aligned to the big WRC and with that, they entered their Fabia S2000 which, showed Skoda still had it and it wasn't until the R5 came along then did it show that Skoda actually knows a thing or two about rallying and in fact won the whole championship in 2016.
    Hyundai, meanwhile, did not compete in anything until their N-division was set up and back to rallying they went with the introduction of the i20N WRC. Thus, that window of emptiness from 2004-2014, no one remembered about the Hyundai Accent WRC whereas with the active participation of Skoda, everyone remembered the "Czech Tank".

    The Accent was never forgotten in some countries. In fact, they were and still is huge. Just not in North America as far as I know. I remember seeing these cars in Korea back in the day pushing over 400whp out of those 1.6L Alpha engines as well as in other countries. Engine swaps were also popular on these using Beta engines as well. Pumping out such power on boost using ONLY factory components believe it or not.

    0:30: When Rodney King was viciously beaten by the cops in 1992 the Police claimed that his car - a Hyundai Excel - was driving at 110 mph. When a Time Magazine journalist called Hyundai's American distributor to verify the claim, the person who took the call said '110 mph in an Excel? You've got to be shitting me.' Now we see Chinese car companies being subjected to vitriol and claims of poor quality, a car industry from a country that like South Korea is associated with political oppression and dirty politics. 20:23 that's it!!!!!!!! Everything comes on how looks, and Octavia was a Beauty, ugly, oversized thing rolling 120km/h on narrow roads... ❤❤❤❤ How not to love it????.... You saw an Octavia on the street and You imaginé how to make it an WRC to You. But the accent, just was a road car rolling out on a WRC stage... Personality, You Say it, and I share it❤
    PD: I'm from Chile so I don't give a f$ck where a car is, korean or europe.... Same to me😂

      I know TyeDye made a video on this car that I've intentionally avoided watching so I don't accidentally get any ideas from that video, so maybe that's a similarity, but I doubt there's many videos out there that mention Hyundai in WRC and also the history of Chaebols in the same video.

      @FailedRacers after watching both, almost completely different, If I had a copper for every small obscure Motorsport channel that I've been subbed to covering the Hyundai Accent WRC, I'd have 2 which isn't a lot but it's weird that it's happened twice.

    1995 standings are more or less to be ignored, Toyota got removed from the standings and the only other two teams were Subaru Prodrive and Ralliart Mitsubishi with a semi-factory Ford team. Nottaking anything away from Kenneth, hd kept up with 4wd cars in a golf gti. Its just that the 1995 season was garbage.

    If you think that the 2000s Hyundai accent isn't a good car then you never owned one and think too highly of other rust buckets

    I had the OG Hyundai accident I mean I was a kid and my dad got it as a company car. Brand new the classic ugly green color in the crush test. I remember it was modern car but ugly 😂😢

    I cant continue listening to you if you cant even get the name of the car right. The car was called Accent, its clearly stated that in several of the purloined clips. Get This Suff Right and you might survive.

    Hyundai's are still terrible car l don't like them after all are they as good as Toyota and actually before l found our how bad Hyundai and Kia are we owned a Hyundai accident woops accent and we didn't own it long a forgettable car then we made the stupid mistake of trading it in on a 2007 Ford Fiesta what an absolutely awful car that was owned ten years worst car we owned infact my 1997 Toyota Hilux is so much better that Ford Fiesta it was my wife's car and it was that bad my wife actually lost confidence in her driving it was awful pile of junk and l was so happy to see it leave on the back of a tow truck we drive a Suzuki Baleno a much much better car as for British cars they are all junk and there hasn't been any decent British car ever made and that goes for South Korea also the best cars obviously are Japanese head and shoulders above any other country except for India were our Baleno was made and Mahindra an Indian make of vehicle
