NYC Subway: Misty Double El Action at West 8th Street

  • Today we are in Coney Island, just one stop short of the famous Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue station.
Here, at West 8th Street, right next to the Atlantic Ocean and several amusement parks, the BMT Brighton Line and the BMT Culver Line diverge. The former is served by (Q) trains while the latter is served by (F) trains. What is interesting about this station is that it is built as a double elevated structure. The upper level is used by the Brighton Line while the Culver Line runs on the lower level.
This station allows for some stunning views along either line. This film shows some action on a misty Saturday in May.
    Enjoy!
    Filmed on 9 May, 2015.

You sure know how to make a former New Yorker who grew up on and LOVES the subway, miss living there don't you?? Had I been single without a newborn baby 29 years ago, I wouldn't have moved out and I'd be retired from Transit already! With all of the new things going on in NYC in terms of trains like the new #7 Hudson Yards, the upcoming 2nd Avenue subway, LIRR into Grand Central, new LIRR yards being built, wow! The area is buzzing with excitement indeed. EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT video that's so professionally done. Thank you for such a fine job, I really miss NYC and the subway and now I'll subscribe to your channel with honour.

Thank you for posting this video. Since I was a kid, I have always enjoyed going to Coney Island and most of the time we passed through here. I recently moved upstate and this is a great way to see how things look now.

Something about trains like this just fascinate me---- When I travel to NY city or Chicago I never rent a car. Light rail is such a fun trip around town.....

You forgot to add that the station used to be one level serving both lines. Thats why the Q climbs up to the station.

+Luftschlange You needn`t apologise! When watching your J line footage, I suspected your superbly focussed filming a godsend for documenting the looks and feel of the neighbourhoods plied by the trains, especially once I saw how the locale around Queensboro station being busted up by redevelopment when happening upon your corresponding footage there :)

That's a good question. It looks like the support for an abandoned track connection from the lower level of the station to the Brighton Line. I'm not sure.

    • @dapster
      @dapster 8 ปีที่แล้ว

+Luftschlange I don't believe there was ever track there. It just looks like a support for the two levels of the station. Don't need 4 trains crashing into the street.

According to Peter Dougherty in 'Tracks New York City Subway 2011', a book with track diagrams (www.nyctrackbook.com) , this is a quote, I hope acceptable to Peter.
"Outer abandoned trackways beyond W. 8th St. once connected the lower-level Culver line to the Brighton line at Ocean Parkway as shown. This connection was removed in July, 1956."
I, Aarre, don't know nor believe that they were ever in revenue service; they were probably just for extra operational flexibility. Anyone want to comment on this?
Many disused trackbeds on els are still in place apparently because their structural beams can't be removed without weakening the overall contiguous structure. This however doesn't explain why so much redundant el structure still exists just up Myrtle Ave. from the Myrtle-Broadway station; that could have been removed without danger to the remaining els, as it's so far away. Perhaps future planning in case it is needed for a future ramp to somewhere else ????

@@michaelmorales1475 Just before it. The curve into West Eighth street is so tight that the R46's would create so much noise (and the incredible slow down) just to get in.

The fly over, please tell us how old it is, because they will proably have too replace all that steel, in say another 50 odd years. My point I wonder how they replace the flyovers when they become to racked too use what ever way they rebuild it's going the cost billions I'm wondering if they'll will go underground or rebuild the flyovers. Because they'll have to do something anyone know what the future plain is going to be, please tell us all who do not know thanks
