We call the breeze the Fremantle Doctor because it appears to come from the nearby coastal city of Fremantle, (obviously it doesn’t only come from there) and it brings welcome relief from the summertime high temperatures, also you were on the Indian ocean, in the summer the temperatures can be around 22/23 degrees, most quokka’s mainly hang around anywhere there’s food.

Rottnest is Dutch for Rats Nest. When the Dutch were floating around Western Australia in the 1600's, they thought the Quokka's were giant rats. Rottnest also has a dark history. It was a working prison for Aboriginal prisoners from 1838 to 1931. It was pretty brutal. Lovely little island with some stunning little bays. There are a couple of little islands near Rottnest that have seals on them.

Having watched your videos from Australia, I have a feeling of sadness. I will be 70 this year and never in my life had any inclination to either visit or indeed live in Australia. I have lived in England and Ireland, I lived in Japan for a few months many years ago and spent 2 years living and working in New York. I now live in Ukraine - not my best move!
Your videos have shown Australia, and in particular Perth, in a completely fresh light. If I were 30 or 40 years younger, I would seriously consider relocating to this wonderful area. By comparison it paints the UK in a very poor light in terms of the quality of living and the condition of the towns and cities - never mind the weather.
Enjoy the rest of your visit.

I'm not sure if most of the viewers would realise that the first 15 minutes of your journey out of Perth were down the swan river, yes the dolphins were in the river & they live/visit & breed there very well, not many places in the world can say that so close to a city.
On Rottnest you followed the bitumen & passed by most of the signs, they are there to direct you to the best beaches & clear water, you missed most of the best areas.
You must be the only person not to go in or near the ocean on Rottnest! ever! lol🤣
What about the pub/hotels & bakery, there are loads of Quokkas always there. you missed them too.

You got it right in one. Dutch sea captain Willem de Vlamingh landed on the island, giving it the famous name of Rottnest Island. This means 'rat's nest' in Dutch, as he mistook the island's abundant quokka population for giant rats. Despite its prominence, it took until 1831 before any large presence was established on Wadjemup.

45:00 "they look like rats"... Well, that's why the island is called Rottnest. Originally it was discovered by the Dutch, and called the island "Rattennest", which translates to rat's nest, because they thought they were rats. The English later on just changed the pronounciation. Cheers from a Dutch guy in Madrid.

Thanks for taking us along on your tour of Rottnest (Rat's Nest - Dutch) Island. I really enjoyed the adventure. 😀 Beautiful videography as usual. Just brilliant.
Rats are rodents and Quokka's are marsupials. Quokka's look like little Wallabies to me, and they are so cute.
You need a broad-brimmed hat with some elevation on the top to keep the sun from heating your head and prevent sunburn around your face and the back of your neck.
Always take twice as much water as you think you'll need because you'll probably still run out.
You are not acclimatised and you probably should listen to the people who live here telling you how to look after yourself. Don't get heatstroke, it can put you in the hospital. All the best.

Well done. On making it up that hill.
I bet the breeze was well needed-on your way down.
    Beautiful views.

As a small child we I took all of my primary school swimming classes in the Swan river amongst the jellyfish (and blowfish/puffer fish and cobblers). Teachers would stand on the jetty shouting at the shoals of little 7 year olds “you can’t swim if you don’t put your face in the water” . I really wouldn’t have minded if it was just water I was putting my face into.

Wonderful vlog. I didn't realise how big Rottnest is. So much for selling it to fellow Aussies. I bet your face was really sore the next couple of days after it burned all night. The scratchy collar is an experience not to be missed. All the fun of the Australian summer.

Rottnest Island gets its name from a Dutch explorer who thought the quokkas were rats. Rottnest means rat's nest in Dutch. Rotto as the locals call it is a beautiful place. I cycled around it in 1979 and it was a brilliant place to ride. It wasn't that hot in April so no overheating then!

Loved your video! Riding up those hills brought back some memories for me. By the way you’ll usually find quokkas around the shopping area near the bakery.

Hi Mac, I just thought you'd like to know, QWOKKA'S are marsupials, so are not rodents. The females have pouches similar to kangaroos, wallabies etc.

Like that City of York ship's anchor you filmed, we found one too. On our way to Queensland we sailed via the Coral Sea, an amazing place of thousands of reefs, perfect for diving. We stayed there for a couple of days, weather was a bit crappy but on the last day we did a final dive. That's when we found a huge anchor, like yours, from about 1800/1850. There was still a timber cross-tree left holding the flukes into the seabed. We got the lift-bags out and gently raised to the surface and the craned it onto deck. When we got to QLD, we donated it to the Cairns Yacht Club. Hope it;s still on their lawn.
