If it was automatic it would have been in the junkyard ages ago. Manual transmissions are what allow these to continue running. Good to see you taking care of mom. Be patient with her especially if there’s cognitive decline. “Mom, I answered that question already: You don’t listen”. That kind of thing.
Sadly, like so many older cheap cars, these usually wound up in the hands of people who just ragged them out because they weren't worth anything. They proved to be quite reliable if cared for even moderately. It's a shame you can't buy something like this today.

These are still excellent daily drivers. Easy to work on and high mpg. I'm amazed to see one in such good shape still.

Great little cars
It's surprising how much value "CHEAP" little cars like that hold! Medical bills are so expensive you need to sell some Ferrari's to pay for them!

@@audubon5425 Just out of high school in 86, I purchased an 87 Chevy Sprint Turbo! Loved that little white car until it got squished.

Thanks - she's doing better, but she needs help getting up and walking etc. and it's not safe for her to live alone anymore.
