Oh and we will be playing other open chords in the next up coming episodes, you can drink to that ;). Have a good weekend. Best. P
I’ve always loved the Cap and Rob’s videos and their playing. Still do, but guys I’ve grown to love what you two do also. Both of your playing is amazing. Keep up the great work, and thanks for the awesome demos.
This is becoming my new dream amp, Princeton Reverb with a 12" Celestion AlNiCo Blue. I have never been one much for Fender amps past the tweed era, but seeing a local band where one of the guitarists was playing a 65 PRRI made me reconsider the blackface era. I'm currently playing a Rickenbacker 330 into a Mesa F-50 with 12AU7s, KT66HPs, and a Vintage 30.
Played one of these in store last week... Fell absolutely in love with it!!! If only I had a grand to throw at an amp! Well I'm only 15 so one day maybe...! :-)
Got a Princeton Chorus. It has 2 -12' Jensens. It's something else. Bought it used and it's still crankin' and has a host of built-in effect possibilities. Luv my Princeton Chorus.
The Celestion makes the Jensen sound like a blanket. I'd love to see a Greenback vs Gold vs Blue comparison now. Either way, it seems like British speakers in Princeton Reverbs might be the best thing ever.
I just purchased a limited edition Princeton this one has an alnico jensen though, and it sound great. I got a great blues lead type of sound with a Hudson Electronics "Gospel Bomb" germanium treble boost. I really am pleased with this amp, I wanted an amp with that classic fender clean sound in my arsenal and I did not want a ridiculously heavy twin reverb.
Late to the party here. One thing to know about the Princeton & its Reverb sibling is that they were voiced with a hefty bass output to overcome the feeble-sounding speakers they originally came with. With the original Oxford in my Princeton, a '68 with the blackface circuit, I used to set the bass to 5 or 6 to get some decent low end. Since replacing that speaker with a Weber version of the old Jensen C10Q, I get the same bass response with the knob set just above 3. This has the added plus of increasing headroom since the amp isn't working so hard to deliver low end. Both Fenders in this video should sound better with the bass backed off a bit, like down to 3.5 or even lower.
I happen to own two Princetons. One is a 65 edition with a 12“ celestion and a blue light. One is a 67 limited edition with a 10“ Jensen and red light. They are quite distinct. The 65 (blue light) has a more direct punchy feel and a thicker meatier tone with a sweet bottom end. It is an overall darker amp. I would not recommended it though if you are after chime and sparkle. The edition with the red light is airier as if you have lifted a veil from the blue one. But it is more neutral in feel, not as punchy and direct as the blue one. I also tested the blue one against the Deluxe re-edition. The Deluxe has a different tone stack on each channel one more baseman and one more original Deluxe. i stayed with the Princeton because how big and punchy it feels and because of the full bottom end. I might not be your typical Fender guy though. I use the amp also for a sweet Jazz tone with an ES330. I think you need to play them to really grasp the difference. Hope that helps.
Jensen speaker FTW IMHO The beauty of these small amps is they're quiet and you can get a bit of edge without being too loud. Ok I have to edit this a bit what Fender really needs to do is make a 2x12/2x10 version of this amp with mixed speakers because both of them together is bliss. :)
My two favorite numptys - these guys are even MORE entertaining than The Captain and Chumpers! Only thing they are missing is a couple of pints - good review overall. Thanks!!
good job boys! Helped me chose the 68 over the 65 for my choice in amp, to plat a Suhr 60's Tele Classic Pro sunburst thru - rw fretboard, w hummer. Either amp is a winner - 1/2 dozen of 1; 6 of the other!
Torn between this and the Deluxe Reverb. I used to gig with Twins, Super Reverb, Marshal combo through a cab, etc. Too big for my current purposes. The only one I've held onto is the Marshal bc I love the option of that heft. But I don't gig anymore and want something warm but bassy and resonant to play at home. The Princeton is intriguing me.
I wonder what it would sound like on a Jensen P12Q or P12N. There is a big difference between a 12" and a 10" and a ceramics vs alnico speaker. As for the difference between Celestion and Jensen, that is a matter of personal preference in the end, the Celestion always reminds me of an amp with a British voicing, thus I tend to prefer the Jensen/Weber/Eminence (Patriot series) in a Fender. Another nice alternative for this amp might be an Eminence Legend 1028K, which is a really nice sounding 10" speaker.
This was such a valuable review. Thanks. I wish I could learn the chords at 19:21. I've figured out most of it from the video... Really melodic. You need a channel for riff lessons. I am really into the Larry Carlton-esque vibe you both demo in your video. Thanks!
@@dscoughy A good bit louder (it's a much, much more efficient speaker), cleaner, smoother top end that's not as harsh. Sounds great, but if you're a home player the volume difference is substantial.
Yayy my two fav presenters! I also love that pedal show. Mick has a vast knowledge about gear which I really appreciate. Du spiller fanme godt Peter :)
If you want a great sounding 10" speaker, which is louder and has more bass than the Jensen C10R, try a Weber 10F150, which is similar in power and voice coil size to the famous old C10N speakers. I switched from a vintage USA Jensen P10R, which came with my 1959 Gibson GA-18, to the 10F150, and it made a HUGE difference in volume and bass. They take awhile to break-in,. but so worth it...!
Dat Hawaiian Flower Shirt ! The Nobels Overdrive only sounds good on the AlNiCo Blue but wasn't it obvious that the Blue would work better ? Just for 2 more pounds, it's a Deal !
10" speaker is being overdriven at higher volumes and it starts to break up but not in a good way, it's also thin sounding. I would go with the 12" edition. I have a Princeton Ltd tweed with an Eminence 12" Cannabis-Rex it's an amazing sounding amp, easily blows away the Jensen 10".
I own a Fender Princeton Reverb Reissue with the 10” Jensen and it chimes wonderful at low volumes but as soon as you turn it up it falls apart farting I now have an older Eminence Alnico Red Fang 10” and it is 102.3 sensitivity and it chimes like a bell at all volumes and the headroom is huge
You two are brilliant! I just bought a 65 reissue Princeton in tweed with a 10" Jenson speaker and cant stop watching this video> 10 or 12" speaker? I cant choose!!
Again, Andertons is off by a decade: the 1950's are when amp power climbed whilst getting progressively cleaner, culminating in the 50W Fender Bassman. It was the 1960's when things cleaned up substantially and amp power REALLY climbed, culminating in the Marshall Major (and, later, the HiWatt DR201).
YouTwo buggers from across the pond DO make me laugh uncontrollably! But with all due respect mates - I have been a Fender fiend for the last 44 years and have owned not all of them- but I was actually writing down last night all the different Fender incarnations that I myself have owned. Yesterday in the mail, I just received my 1965 Princeton reissue with the green tolex and the 12 inch celestion Greenback. The clean tone on this little 15 watt amp is absolutely astounding! So, my producer was yelling at me saying I should have gotten the '65 with the black tolex w/the eight inch Alnico's? And I have played them both and I like both of them equally - in as much as what they are set up to do! Now, the difference is very slight in terms of when you start to get your natural tube " BURN DISTORTION!" - And this is without using the IBANEZ TS-808 - or your distortion pedal of choice! The bottom line is last night WOW - without even fiddling the amp at all whatsoever and it's about as simple as things can get regarding how many knobs and so forth and so on! What do we have here? Volume, treble, Bass, Reverb, speed, intensity,! The only thing I don't understand about this particular amplifier which all my other Fenders seem to have is one simple thing; there's no STANDBY switch? OTHER THAN THAT - the clean tone is absolutely orgasmic! I ran out last night to sit in with some other cats and before I even had a chance to turn one knob plugged it in with nothing but a cord, my TS-808 and my boss DD-3 - I played two songs. Roy Buchanan's Masterpiece "The Messiah will come again", and "Little Wing"- when I hit the first two notes of " Little Wing"- before I was into the song for 25 for 30 seconds - you could have heard a pin drop! The unbelievably devastating clean tone on this amplifier has to be heard to be understood or BELIEVED.! The Princeton '65 R.I. ( Green Tolex w/the '12 Greenback celestion ) difference between this and the '68 quite obviously is on the '68 - they used the Bassman tone stack which changes the tonality quite a bit. But as far as this American made - YES made in the USA - and from what I read - the tube sockets are all hand-wired & all I can say is WOW! ANYONE who is considering this - there are many many TH-cam videos that do demos for these amplifiers - but I think you need to play it for yourself so that you can come to your own decision- because everybody's idea of tone is different from everyone else's! And when it comes right down to it the truth is the truth indeed! It's "ALL in your fingers!" - my brothers! But, I will tell you that this is one hell of an amplifier and it absolutely HOWLS for 15 Watts!!!! Big Daddy's - there is another beauty to this amplifier - which I have not mentioned and, being somewhere "around sixty years old" - I have to say that carrying around a 32-pound amplifier sure as hell is a lot better than putting my gorgeous 1964 vintage Super Reverb on a hand truck and humping it up two flights of stairs! Keep up the good work mates - I am subscribed to your Channel! And the only other question I have is when you're demoing these amplifiers why didn't you both use Stratocasters? Bless your heart mates and keep up the good work!!! An " O.G." - from NYC... ROCK ON MATES ✌️💙💙💙🤷♂️🇱🇷
I know this video is old, but can anyone help me out please? So I bought a 12-in limited edition Princeton Bordeaux and it doesn't have any break up from 1 to 10. I checked the tubes and they're all stock. I've taken it to guitar center to let them know but they all think it's fine. Do I have a dud?
Not really fair to compare a 10" ceramic speaker combo to a 12" Alnico. I don't know who would buy the standard for 2 quid less. Perhaps the store offered more discount on the standard ...
The jenson is brighter that's fir sure, and on a fender amp especially blackface era your far better with an alnico magnet speaker in imo, so the Celestion blue would be my choice
One on the left hands down. The 10” ceramic is no match for alnico 12”. 12” has better bottom end, more sweet compression, and the mods are more clear. The other is flubby
I'm going to have too listen to this one a, couple off times! I just happen to be trying to decide about these two amps. At one point i think it was Mick who said the standard was sweeter at low volumes, but you say the blue is more efficient? I mostly play in the mornings before work and before the neighbors get up and prefer that clean sound Gregor Hilden has on his TH-cam videos( a 1963 or 64 Vibroverb). Now will come the most difficult part, finding a store that has both to listen to! Thanks for the Very timely video.
A speaker is not rated 100dB @ 12 or 25w, it is often rated 100 dB @ 1 w in a distance of 1 meter, and 5 dB is quite a large difference. I tend to forget, but think that 6 dB is a doubling of the sound level. That means you have to have double the watts to play 6 dB louder.
@kimhansen Old comment and even older video but just to clarify Mick was correct in what he said here: The 12" Alnico Blue speaker is rated at 15 watts and 100db while the ceramic is 25 watts and 95db. The wattage rating and speaker efficiency are two separate things. Speaker efficiency is indeed rated at one meter with one watt of input which Mick did not mention as that was assumed as standard.
Tonight The World Dies depends on how loud you want to be, but most guitarists would feel like there isn't much. I think it's fine, but I also think most guitarists play way too loud.
I learned a LOOONG time ago that anybody can play loud, it takes a really good player to play soft & clean. Corollary, If you can't play good, play loud!
Great review. Preferred the Jensen. It has "that" sound off the records. Blue is great though but different. Its a good colour association for the sound. Not worried about the "farting" so its called. Just turn down the bass. Its a 10" speaker so cut your cloth accordingly and don't expect it to compete with a 12".

Late to the party here. Keep up the good work mates - I am subscribed to your Channel! And the only other question I have is when you're demoing these amplifiers why didn't you both use Stratocasters?
Bless your heart mates and keep up the good work!!!
An " O.G." - from NYC...
ROCK ON MATES ✌️💙💙💙🤷♂️🇱🇷
what's the finish on the telecaster called?
It's a journeyman finish. Best. P
Thank you very much!
What color though? Vintage blonde?
Is the speaker the only difference between the two amps? or do they also differ in circuitry...?
Limited edition is hand-wired I think
I know this video is old, but can anyone help me out please? So I bought a 12-in limited edition Princeton Bordeaux and it doesn't have any break up from 1 to 10. I checked the tubes and they're all stock. I've taken it to guitar center to let them know but they all think it's fine. Do I have a dud?
I don't know mate but if you post this question on 'The Gear Page.net' they will help you out for sure 👍
I like the blue one
Please do a Guitar Paradiso on Milkman Amplification! A Fender head-to-head or just straight-up Milkman video would be great!!!
Not really fair to compare a 10" ceramic speaker combo to a 12" Alnico. I don't know who would buy the standard for 2 quid less. Perhaps the store offered more discount on the standard ...
If they sold this LE in blue tolex here in the US, I'd get it tomorrow.
A 1m grid resistor on the phase inverter smooths these amps out. Takes away the ragged and flabby edge to the overdrive.
Genuinely appreciate all of Anderton's TV, but this vid DID NOT show off one of THE all time classic amps to anywhere near its capabilities. Sigh.
I was thinking the same.
holy fret buzz
Isn't it glorious? Love a bit of fret buzz.
The 12 sounds a like a deluxe
Which one do you think would be better for semi-hollows and hollow bodies?
i was waiting for the breaking-glass sound effect at 2:25
That first jam was sick, what key was it in?
A speaker is not rated 100dB @ 12 or 25w, it is often rated 100 dB @ 1 w in a distance of 1 meter, and 5 dB is quite a large difference. I tend to forget, but think that 6 dB is a
doubling of the sound level.
Am I the only one who kinda likes that farting, 'amp about to explode' type of sound?
Alex Evander yes
No
No.
Neil Young built an empire on that sound.
I like it too, but not all the time.
It's one of "the best" sounds ever! Easy on the ears too.
Mick with a Tele? MY EYESSSSSSSSSSSSSS
I think I'm more interested in Mick's tele
standard way better at louder volume. princeton wasn't meant for a 12
How is the clean headroom?
Tonight The World Dies depends on how loud you want to be, but most guitarists would feel like there isn't much. I think it's fine, but I also think most guitarists play way too loud.
I learned a LOOONG time ago that anybody can play loud, it takes a really good player to play soft & clean. Corollary, If you can't play good, play loud!
Why did that hand point at Mick's crotch?!? Blue balls? 7:59
how much this amps are? they're great
Both just shy of a thousand pounds - a link in the description will take you to the right page :)
thank you :)
Link in description dude. Best. P
