This man is the real deal when talking seeds and what he thinks may or may not help you that’s all he does foodplot seeds unlike others out there who claim too know everything about whitetail deer etc lots of jack of all trades master of none out there so beware

Thanks for another spectacular video. I'm new to foodplot/screening and have some Northwoods HD screening to plant this year, so looking forward to that. Just curious if there is any screening value the second year when just the dead stalks remain?

Hi John, I had a failed HD screen last year but there were a number of possible causes. Poor planting with a new drill, poor weed control, wet conditions, and it seems possibly over applied simazine.
Due to the poorly draining nature of this field I would like to try a blend of HD and EW with the thought that even if the HD does grow spotty like last year it would still help support the EW later into the year. Any thoughts on seed rate I should use with a no till drill?

You noted your HD screen should only be planted for 2 years in same location, but how many years can you plant Egyptian Wheat in a row as I will need to use it?

Great video John! My only fear with the HD plot screen is the lower seed rate. How wide does the screen have to be before you can no longer see through it? Height is not a huge concern. 8-10’ would more than suffice.

Could you burn the HD screening in the spring, then plant switchgrass?

Thank for the information. I have few questions when dealing with poor sandy soil. Do I need to put down fertilizer before or during seed planting for the HD screening? If so how much for 1/5 acre and what N-P-K do you suggest for the soil with OM at 1.5 and a HP at 5.7? Again thanks for the videos.

I would up the recommended fertilizer rates up a bit. (They will be in the instructions)
Also look at Brad Harper/Harper Growing Solutions for a liquid fertilizer as well.

Have used John’s HD screen the last 2 years in South Central Wisconsin. Planted in early July and it easily passed 12ft in height both years!! Great stuff!!

      No
It’s not even close to the same product.
Ours has been in production and tested for 6 years already.
We have found a much better option (6 years ago) than the typical Egyptian what /sorghum combo most others are selling.
The latest and greatest screening blends are just that. Same old varieties that we tried and found how they can’t hold up to fall and winter weather.
Keep in mind, we have been trying and testing this for over 12 years trying to perfect this . 😉

John, does the HD screen require regular rain or watering? We seem to be in another long term drought here in Texas.
