    I'm sure there were many 'first time buyer/renovator' videos in 2022. Two things I recall from my experience similar to yours. 1. A B&Q receipt for every day off, including my holidays, and the thought of the hidden cost of petrol used driving there and back. 2. Took us 7 years on our first house, 4 years on the second - both while being parents to one child. Quality of life is low.

    I do think if you don't go into your first property thinking of all these things it can be scary. However a good question is : Could you afford the house you want(regardless of new and/or old) done up or is a fixer upper your only choice if you want to buy. For some a fixer upper is the only way to get on the property ladder and hopefully it will be worth it in the end when its time to sell. I would say old houses offer the opportunity to extend, new houses dont always come with the ability to extend.

      New houses these days are made of card. My advice is always stick to old.
