With the very greatest of respect, but, every time Silver turns away to avoid having his head touched when Delaws is on the saddled horse above Silver, Delaws incorrectly instantly stops trying to touch Silver’s face which is very strongly reinforcing Silver’s aversion to face-touching. The reason Delaws takes his hand away and therefore instantly takes the pressure off Silver is because Delaws has to grab and shorten the lead rope on Silver but the removal of pressure that this rope grabbing causes is having the very opposite effect on Silver’s reluctance to have his face touched, again it is strongly reinforcing Silver’s aversion. Silver is being rewarded for turning his head away .... Silver is also becoming resentful of this treatment and quickly losing respect. Pressure release must occur only and instantly, when the horse is calmly accepting what is being done to it. Suggestion : Very much more vigorous direction-training on the ground - getting Silver to go much faster and turn in many, many more times, as this would not only gain Silver’s attention, but also his respect. I did that with my mustang in a small pasture, but she joined up with me faster, and I just used a rope.
