This is an introductory video to the Hokuto no Ken franchise, where I provide a brief plot overview and analysis of the first true arc of the series, the Shin arc.
This video is meant to rekindle interest in a franchise that seems to be mostly forgotten, and that hasn't seen new core content since 2003.

I think my favorite part about the Shin arc is how Kenshiro basically teaches Bat an important lesson about honor, respect, and forgiveness through his actions of burying Shin. Despite all of the stuff Shin put Ken through, Ken still viewed Shin as his best friend and gave him a proper burial since Shin also loved Yuria. It's through stuff like this that helps Bat grow into a good man like Kenshiro, and it's also why Kenshiro's character is a lot deeper than what people think it initially is. He's a man holding great sorrow, but he also carries a lot of love and strength within him.

I like how Ken still had the conviction to Kill Shin despite how he felt regardless. He used perfect judgement. He always had perfect judgements and zero regrets for his actions. After Shin scared him it unlocked the real Ken.

A lot of people say DBZ is the godfather of Shounen.
But this series is actually the godfather of Shounen and action anime.
    Dragonball, Jojo, Berserk; etc.
    It inspired all of them.

    • @redpikmin017

True, if I were to put it better way, it's to have the godfather trio and from what I've heard, its: kinnikuman, hokuto no ken, and dragon ball z as all 3 have inspired shonen. I love dbz but I'm sick of dbz fanboys acting like dbz had no inspiration but was the inspiration and all anime wouldn't exist without dbz, even slice of life animes that don't reference shonens or even screaming characters

Shin only beat Ken because Ken held back while Shin was basically a narcissist taking advantage of a friend. That type of behavior is common in urban environments such as the hood where they befriend you just to be able to try you while they remain safe.

7:28 I may be wrong about this, but from what I remember this dude used some martial arts technique to make his skin as tough as steel, and Kenshiro basically just managed to "bend" it by using sheer force (which he's definitely capable of doing since he destroyed a tank barehanded).

It took itself seriously, it had engaging character who though not the deepest nonetheless all had something compelling about them be they hero or villain, and it managed to balance a message of the importance of kindness, compassion and honor, while not falling into the trap that so many of the later shonen series that followed would fall into.
You know the ones, series where "Defeat equals friendship" meant no consequences for horrible, horrible actions. No, though Ken often came to forgive his enemies or st least ended their encounters with some level of respect for them, pretty much all of them died. No death is cheap here.
In other words, it had genuine pathos, and despite the ludicrous feats and events, it manages to feel real in a way most modern shonen dont.
Also, while Kenshiro is a great protagonist, the thing that makes him really work, is that his entire personality is at odds with his setting, thus all his conflicts feel logical, dynamic and real.
Its something a lot of post apokalypse stories that tries to be Fist fails to understand.
Having a protagonist who fits right in with the wasteland setting does not by definition make for an engaging story, but put someone with morals and convictions, who is genuinely likeable, and put him in a setting where might makes right, you immediatly get a story where your protagonist FEELS like an underdog despite rarely being actually threatened with a fight he can lose.
Kenshiro almost always wins his fights, but often the people he tried to protect end up killed or crushed, and he has to respond to that.
Add in all the family dynamics and rivalries, and it all comes together.

7:45 Hokuto means North Dipper, aka the Big Dipper or Ursa Major, which is why sometimes "Hokuto no Ken" is (badly) translated as "Fist of the Great Bear." "Fist of the Big Dipper" doesn't sound very cool, so they changed it to North Star, which is at least somewhat related since you can use the Big Dipper to find the North Star.
Nanto is...the South Dipper, which is an actual constellation, unlike the "South Star" which doesn't really exist.
In my eyes, it's pretty unfortunate that as the series goes on the Nanto Seiken schools are pretty much made out to be really inferior. At first they were the opposite but equal counterpart to Hokuto, but then once Toki and Raoh are introduced it pretty much becomes "yeah Hokuto Shinken's the best and Nanto Seiken has always been under its shadow."

I think you might have misinterpreted the crux of Ken's fight with Shin. The fight starts with Shin thinking he's still got the upper hand, only to learn that Ken has grown through his obsession with finding Yuria. In response to this, Shin decides to "Kill" the Yuria doll, thinking that if Ken thinks Yuria is dead, he'll lose the object of his obsession and become weak enough to kill. Fortunately, this plan backfires HARD with Ken drawing on pure, righteous anger to give him the strength to defeat Shin.
Then again, I only saw the anime, so maybe the manga did something different.
Also the anime did the Shin arc much better than the manga did, imo.

    • @realamericannegro977
      @realamericannegro977 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@realamericannegro977 You mean the Colonel. Seeing as Shin was one of the Nanto Rokusei, whereas the Colonel was a practitioner of one of the subordinate schools, there's basically no way he's stronger than Shin. Especially since you can see that the strongest Nanto Seiken practitioners have honed their destructive techniques to the point they can slice stone with their bare hands, or crush diamonds in their grip, while the Colonel had to rely on things like claws and razor boomerangs.

I am pretty sure we got stuff in the States before most other places too; at least before like Canada and South America. Even HnK barely anyone knows here; it was DBZ specifically that really popped off. Original DB was less popular.
