Interestingly Jackal's "head-harness" is a reference to Jagi from the Anime & Manga. (Jagi was a ruthless killer who kept his head from exploding using the same method and often fought dirty.)
It would have been much cooler if the character in the movie was Jagi as opposed to Jackal. While he was a decent villain, he was also a pretty minor one whom wasn't much of a threat to Kenshiro. This whole movie feels like the screenwriter only had access to the first two volumes of the manga and based the entire plot around what happened during that point of the story.
Jackal was a henchman from Shin he released the big dude that killed 600 people by the name Diablo . Jackal used dynamite and was in two or three episodes from the animated manga series. Jackal wasn't an important charachter to the whole series . This movie only focused on the first 22 episodes from the animated manga but failed drasticaly . Not sure why Roddy Mc Dowell starred in it is beyond me . As for the effects they're very low . Even the movie Punisher starring Dolph Lundgren was more violent and was called the most violent movie from the 80's from that era . Anyway all live action movies based on cartoons, animated manga sucks ( Transformers, G.I. Joe , Dragonball , to name a few )
If anyone is planning to watch the 1986 anime movie, I would recommend you watch the subtitled version rather than the dub, even if you normally prefer dubs. The Streamline Pictures English dub wasn't translated very well and actually just removes (instead of translating) the narration that explains how Ken's martial art works and why the hell people are exploding.
I suggest watching the 1986 movie and then following up with the 2007 film "Legend of Raoh: Chapter of Fierce Fight", it almost works as a direct sequel and it'll give ya a real final fight and conclusion with Raoh.
Legend has it Brandon Lee, son of Bruce Lee, was offered the role of Kenshiro, but died on the set of The Crow just before production began. In an alternate reality, Brandon Lee would still be alive and this movie could've been the gold standard of live-action anime adaptations...
In an alternate reality where Brandon Lee is in the role and the movie was a shot-for-shot remake of the 1986 Fist of the North Star movie (110 minutes long), maybe instead of the open ending the 1986 animated film had, replace it with the real final fight between Ken and Raoh from the 2007 animated film "Legend of Raoh: Chapter of Fierce Fight". THAT could have the potential of being good, not with the script this shit had to offer, Brandon would've been wasted.
Jackal' s head mask thing you prevent his head from bursting is actually in the anime suppose to be Jagi, and the reason it didn't explode is because Kenshiro let Jagi live because he was his adopted older brother, andJagi only wore that cage to help prevent pain, they obviously didn't translate that well
Lin is actually the holy Empress and protecting the holy Empress is the destiny of every successor of Hokuto Shinken that's why Kenshiro always knows where Lin is
As a big fan of the Anime I have to say it has a respected place in history, it was influensed by Bruce Lee and Mad Max and itself influensed many famous franchises like Dragonball Z and Street Fighter, the movie is bad but the manga and anime are worth checking out
@@jimmyju76 Technically it did as Fist of the North Star is the series that set the standards of the shonen genre still used to this day. Hell Jo Jo's Bizarre Adventure wouldn't have existed without Fist of the North Star

And his love life is likewise ruined by a prick with blonde hair. Dragonball and FOTNS? Sure, they're similar in that... both of them exist?

I got my hands on the animated film when I was young, and watched it so often that I wore the VHS. When this was announced, young me was so excited. Then... this. I've been hoping you'd take a crack at this one.
During my childhood time (around 1994~1996, cannot remember clearly), that anime was actually shown on TV in China. And it was meant for kids as it was shown on kids' cartoon channel in the afternoon. But somehow nobody seemed feeling anything wrong at that time.
I remember when this came out (direct to HBO) and thought if this was called something else it would have been cool but being disappointed at the fail of being called Fist of the North Star (everyone had the anime vhs and is still a classic movie) Great and fun review!
I used to watch this all the time with my dad when I was a kid. I had no idea it was an adaptation back then, but I remember feeling like something was missing, like it was a sequel I had not seen the first movie too.
Luckily the North Star is pretty close to the Big Dipper, so the title isn’t too huge of a change and it sounds *way* better. Fist of the Big Dipper lmao.
Yeah, the big dipper is the constellation you see in the Northern Hemisphere, and the Southern Cross is the constellation you see in the Southern Hemisphere. That's why Shin poked the big dipper into Ken's chest.
I have a soft spot for this movie. Considering I seen it in 1995, there wasn't hardly ANY anime live adaptations here in America, so it was a treat at the time, you took what you could get. I still think this has a fantastic soundtrack though, it's overlooked by the terrible movie.
I worked for the creator of Fist of the North Star from 2005-2007, and he showed me some production images and concepts for the film... he actually like the idea of Kenshiro being non-Japanese... which made no sense to me. He even hired European body builders to model the main character of the prequel series, Fist of the Blue Sky, which was Kenshiro's uncle, also named Kenshiro...
Shin kills Ryuken using a mere revolver? His fingers are stronger than a sword and the only Northern dude he mess is just Kenshiro. Raoh is the one who killed Ryuken. And yes empty handed

Gary Daniels would have been a bigger name had he not worked as much in the east with people like Jackie Chan . The biggest movie he was in was The Expendables. Also in City Hunter he played Ken during a fight with Jackie Chan after Chan was thrown into a Street Fighter 2 arcade machine.
Raoh was too awesome to be in that live-action adaptation. The King of Fists did not just dodge the bullet on that one. Oh, no. He refused to be in the same room as the gun and punched the shooter into next week. Raoh's awesome horse later trampled on the gunman's corpse. Also, when are we getting Fist of the North Star Bat Side Story: Legend of the Young Wolf? If done right, Dante Basco would be awesome in it as Bat.
I loved this movie! Never laughed so hard in my life, I must have watched it for a week straight going around the house shouting "Kenshiroooo, Kenshiroooo!" in Julia's voice for months afterwards
Ok, I really love Enshohma's opening illustration just for its invocation of Tom Servo! Oh, and OMG, I definitely have that same old Superman comic book with the angry mullet expression!
I think it's funny that you remember and recognize obscure names off the top of your head but completely overlooked one of the biggest wrestlers of the 90's, someone whom, arguably, waaaaaaay more people know than B list character actors. Not ripping on you, I enjoyed the video. Cheers!
That guy riding the bike randomly shooting people.... wow. And did he say “ Oooo baby!” Or “ Oooo a baby!” And then shoot it?? Ehhh... it wouldn’t surprise me.
I've got a cult movie review idea, Brandon! Why not take a look at Tim Burton's 1950's sci-fi parody, Mars Attacks! (1996). It's one of my favorites and I want to see what you have to say about it. It's got all the hallmarks of old sci-fi and is just overall a fun film. People didn't like it when it came out, but it's becoming more of a cult classic.

I think the film crew forgot to put Clint Howard back in his cage one night and lock it so he drove off the set in the middle of the night shooting at people, dogs, children...we haven't seen him since.
To be honest, besides changing his awful final outfit, if they had Costas Mandylor dye his hair blonde, he would have really looked a lot like Shin from some scenes in the Anime
And I'd been thinking Costas Mandylor was Ken all these years-that's what the HBO commercials for this made me think way back when. So it was actually Gary Daniels-aka Street Fighter's Ken from City Hunter (Such a fun flick!) and (live action) Tekken's Bryan Fury. Interesting!
I also find it perplexing that Kenshiro's name wasn't changed to "Ken" since he's a white guy.. while Yuria is played by an asian women, but had her name westernized into "Julia"...
In the manga and the anime, the little girl was actually just mute from the trauma of seeing her parents murdered. All Kenshiro did there was basically use acupressure to stimulate the speech center of her brain, allowing her to recover from her trauma. That's a little more believable than curing blindness if you ask me.

It depends on what caused the blindness. It could have been all in her head similar to being mute.

IT'S TIME! IT'S VADER TIME!
Also features Tony Halme AKA Ludvig Borga in the WWF (R.I.P) Vader and Halme actually wrestled in Japan.
Pedro Sepulveda to be fair vader wore a mask most of the time

DEFINITIVE, IT MAKES THE SCENE BETTER 17:05
Why didn't Kenshiro kill the zombies? Because they were already dead!
baran was able to resurrect dead and kenshiro killed them
Is it really so expensive to fill a couple of mannequins with Hammer blood and light explosives?
yes when you factor in that you have to hire a licensed explosives technician
And let's be honest: Explosives aren't really cheap.
yeah, but compared to that weird head effect and a miscast Malcolm McDowell.
Maybe production just got a late start and they didn't have time.
What's hammer blood?
What happened with Clint Howard's character?
I think the film crew forgot to put Clint Howard back in his cage one night and lock it so he drove off the set in the middle of the night shooting at people, dogs, children...we haven't seen him since.
He did escape and became USAF radar operator a few years later but first he was working in Houston with NASA.
09:45. Hey, stop referencing James Bond. He's a lover, sometimes a fighter. Octopus: all arms. XD
To be honest, besides changing his awful final outfit, if they had Costas Mandylor dye his hair blonde, he would have really looked a lot like Shin from some scenes in the Anime
"It is not your choice. Fist of the north star is yours!"
I remember that quote from the film. Oh yeah the live action suck!!!!
You know there's also another live action fist of the north star movie but it's from Korea
LMFAO!!!! "Oh, Thank You movie".🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 This dudes review is HILARIOUS! I'm hooked, subscribed
One thing you have to admit...in the old days almost no manga char have a face features like a japanese...most of em look like a jack up american hero
How did you skip the part where the guy on the ground flips over in the background of the fight in the Hall of the Southern Cross?
I also find it perplexing that Kenshiro's name wasn't changed to "Ken" since he's a white guy.. while Yuria is played by an asian women, but had her name westernized into "Julia"...
4:27 Ooh baby (gun shot)
Curious thing Costas Mandylor had actually a face that looks like it's drawn by Tetsuo Hara
I think they reused the globe/round motorcycle from Space Hunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone in a bunch of the village attack shots.
Ok. What next the makers of strangers things do elfen lied?.....
Ok am I only one seem that would be a good idea.
14:01 That's rough, buddy.
