"Little Tommy Daggett. How I loved listening to your sweet prayers at night. Then you would jump into bed, so afraid that I was under there And I was!"
One of the creepiest and best scenes in the movie. He doesn't introduce himself. Instead, one infers from his words and generally nasty demeanor that it's the Devil. One of my favorite movies.
Horns and red skin was something the media popped off from old paintings of the Devil from various myths? The Devil was actually quite a demure and sinister looking creature.
Actually, it's a little bit of both. Medieval depictions of "Satan" drew from earlier pagan deities and gave him an inhuman, almost monstrous form. Paradise Lost, which cast him in more sympathetic light (though at his core he really is still a dick since at point acknowledges he's the cause of his own misery but refuses to stop) and "humanized" him into the more understated, "Sexy Satan" depiction that would continue to grow and evolve over time. Curiously enough if you look back on some of the medieval depictions of Angels they also look pretty weird and monstrous, getting their own more face lifts of appearing beautiful and alluring in modern times. The Prophecy films run with the idea that the distinction between Angels and Demons is actually less about "good" and "evil" and more...political outlook for lack of a better term. At their core they are all the same thing, they just take differing stances on how to deal with humans and all of them can be ruthless, blood thirsty, and right bastards if needed. Thus any aesthetic difference Thomas, Gabriel, and Lucifer are going to be negligible at best.
I just love how he does not say "Hello...I'm the Devil, heard of me?" He just makes his intro short by saying he was the first Angel. Some would think the Devil would be over dramatic when introducing himself, but in this he doesn't. He just straight up says a fact that gives a big hint to who he is and moves on instead of waiting for the human to guess.
Melkor. Morgoth was a designation the elves gave him, it's not his name. it means "dark enemy". Melkor was the first and most powerful of the Valar. in Middle Earth lore he held essentially same position as Lucifer in Neo-Christian lore.
I don't know if they wanted lucifer to be portrayed as an antihero but in my opinion, he seems to be like an antihero for reluctantly saving humanity from Gabriel's plan. Viggo gave lucifer such a demeanor that it makes you wonder if this is what the devil is really like. One minute he threatens her then offers to help her but reminds her that he doesn't give a damn about humans, only to preserve his version of the balance. Viggo makes lucifer out to be brilliant, clever but threatening. The most etheryal version of such an iconic character in film and idiom in religion.
+Lucifers Apprentice What Gabriel wants, is his own hell to rule over. Lucifer knows that if there is a second hell, he would have to go to war with that realm, in order to compete for bad souls across the universe. The collecting of bad souls, is what keeps is furnace running, like constantly putting more coal in the train engine to keep it going along a track called time. Lucifer is the conductor of this train called hell. Gabriel wants his own train to conduct, but he cant take Lucifers train, because god made that train for Lucifer. So Gabriel has found a different way to get his own train. The only problem is, there is only enough coal for one train, not two. That's the best way I can put it, hope that helps.
+Lucifers Apprentice You should see Parts 4 & 5, eventhough its played by another actor you see his plans, and what he has been waiting for this whole time.
Lucifers Apprentice Not so much the anti-hero on purpose, more of: 1. the enemy of my enemy is my friend 2. he feels that Gabriel was competition, which he will not abide
His disposition towards her is unique to other movie Devils. The way he speaks, the things he says, even his mannerisms are all so subtly unnatural. The typical depiction of the Devil is as that of a business man. He comes at you with a smile and friendliness. There's an old saying that you wouldn't know that you were talking to the Devil unless i told ya. Walter Huston's performance in All That Money Can Buy was the perfect depiction of this idea; Quite scary to say the least. However, what makes Viggo's Lucifer so unique and scary in his own right, is that in the film The Prophecy, He is not trying to fool Catherine or you the viewer into believing he is a just a generous business man trying to Helo you out. Oh God no... He is very much revealing himself as Satan, and he needs to talk to you about some real shit, or otherwise he will fuck you up. It's like he hates having to talk to a human. There's lots of little subtle cues in his body language and his voice that give off an aura of pure Hatred towards catherine. The eating of the flower was very symbolic of this. This is one of the most interesting, unsettling, and just plain magnificent depictions of The Devil I've ever seen in anything. Viggo scares me.
Viggo's voice does all the work in his role as the Devil. He's captivating. Your eyes are pulled toward him. What will this fallen angel do? This was the first movie where Viggo caught my attention. And for being mostly in the shadows, and having few lines, he holds his own against Walken. Angel vs. Angel.
The dialogue is what really makes this devil so effective, and of course Viggo's performance. "God is love. i don't love you" Just Pure Evil. I'll never forget that.
I'm always reminded of the quote from the first Exorcist movie, when the priest attempts to nag the demon within the girl to free itself from its restraints. _"That's much too vulgar a display of power, Karras."_ The best depictions of supernatural make do with less, for both darkness and mystery scare human beings more than anything else. A demon conjuring hellfire and lobbing it like an imp from *DooM*? Meh, scary and thrilling but not truly terrifying. The Devil himself appearing at a moment of need and spiritual anguish with offers of guidance and revelation (while managing to keep his victim on their heels for the length of the conversation) and potential assistance? Bone-shakingly unnerving and deeply sinister.
Viggo played in my opinion the best Lucifer on film. This is the first time I ever saw him on film. That I could recall, then I remembered Young Guns 2. Been a fan of Viggo's ever since
+steveetienne Peter Stormare's portrayal of Lucifer in Constantine is soooooooo much better than both of those performances. Overall, his performance is aesthetically even better than Viggo' Mortensen's, although they convey different aspects of the character's traditional persona. Stormare and Mortensen are the best I've seen thus far.
Lucifer means "Bringer of light" in Latin and he is seen as Venus, the morning star. In Hebrew his "God granted " name is "Samhiel." He converted God's daughter, who was then known as "Lilith" the first demon. Most scholars think there were attempts to literally "demonize" the pagan gods of the societies around ancient Judea.
So much better than those Angels in Supernatural and all those lazy tv series crap just thinking that they are edgy by recreating Gabriel's humorous style again and again in one liners.
Badjoke Maker angles, malaks, are messengers of God. Angles, being spiritual beings; must assume a physical presents to interact with man. Once they assume a physical being, they are just as susceptible to temptations of the flash as men and some fail to it (Gen. 6).
Viggo is the gorgeous and convincing Satan! BUT! For me perfect in this role was Rosalinda Celentano in "The Passion of the Christ". She really scared me. Even more! She scares me every time when I watch "Passion". And this scene when she is screaming in this hole in the middle of desert! Something is inside her - a blemish of soul, and something is really wicked in her facial expression. Every her move is a move of very very dangerous predator. And she still scares me...
Viggo was an amazing Lucifer. One of the most iconic scenes. The first movie was the best the second two were disappointing. I adored the singing like a bored mockery to the Almighty.
I love how in the beginning hes just there in the dark background just hanging out. Waiting. Like he's always just waiting there in the dark for all of us lol.
My favorite movie version of the devil, Viggo just gives Lucifer such an unsetteling demeanor that you can't help but wonder if this is what the devil is really like
ShoutsWillEcho1 Peter Stormare just stole the entire movie with his performance. Peter Stormare and Viggo Mortensen play a similar devil. But you cant Forget Tim Curry's performance either
Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Rosalinda Celentano, Gabriel Byrne and Vincent Price have all played Lucifer. We may as well mention Lucifer-like characters, in which case Willem Dafoe, Dustin Hoffman and Kevin Spacey, among others, have rendered their portrayals. Not to disagree with you guys that those were great performances, but calling any one of them THE best is quite far-fetched. D.R.
Hasfast you forgot Jack Nicholson for your list there... Also watch Mister Frost- someone uploaded the full movie here on youtube The guy's usually scruffy looks and humorous demeanor... makes your hair stand on end in this movie... Never ever thought I'd be thoroughly creeped out by JEFF GOLDBLUM!
I was 13 when this movie came out and I had no clue that Viggo Mortensen played the devil until this very minute. I remember having a crush on him back then and unwittingly that crush has followed me to 2018.
Along with DeNiro and Claude Rains ("Heaven on My Shoulder, 1946), one of the best portrayals of Lucifer in American film. In British film, Peter Cook as George Spiggot/Lucifer in "Bedazzled."
The best version of Satan is from the passion of the Christ...that version was portrayed by a woman from Italy. I forget her name, by she is beautiful and was perfect for Lucifer. I love this film. 👍🏻🙏🏻
The Prophecy with Christopher Walken great movie and I liked Gabriel! This movie was interesting with good angels vs bad angels and Michael & Luficer will battle it out on judgement day and Michael always wins! Michael is my personal favorite****
+Aimee Adesso Not in these movies though. Eric Roberts played Michael and did nothing to help. Lucifer played a major role in the 4th film, and a small part in the 5th. Gabriel was the best of the first 3 films
I have to say, this might be my favorite cinematic adaptation of Satan on the big screen ("Fantasia's" "Hall Of The Mountain King" notwithstanding). Also, does anyone else think that Kevin Smith borrowed a little of this movies plot for his own film "Dogma?" I don't have a problem with that, I'm just saying...
Yeah, the idea was that the Heaven Gabriel was trying to make would, as Satan put "just be another Hell." Which he can't have. So even though he hates humans, he'd rather maintain the balance then lose his strong hold.
Rolling Ormond Slick hair is a corner of evil in general. Either that or bald. Look at the hoody demon bdsm fuck in the vid, he knows what i'm talkin' about!
Aragorn was never quite the same after the war of the ring...
This movie came out before Lotr
+Eric Monaco (The Unstable Fan) I can see that. Doesn't change the joke though
Gweyhound ik
Ah ah ah x) You killed me x)
LoL
"For while Heaven may be close I am always open, even on Christmas"
I loved that line. This is some top shelf Satan right here.
Is it bad I interpreted that as Santa and Satan being one in the same?
I always knew Walmart is hell.
@@CatBetaBellanri1218 you are spot on , the free masons did that on purpose, santa was just another creation to destroy humanity
"But like all true love, one day it withered on the vine... "
Creepy.
Being a king just went over Aragorn's head.
Maybe he just put on the One Ring?
that's a fair assumption....
The one ring is actually Frodos sphinkter.
He just kicked morgoth off his throne!
I still think the scene where he talks to the cop is the best..."I listened to you praying that I wasn't under the bed...and I was"
"Little Tommy Daggett.
I love how the angels in this movie all perch like birds.
Lmao 😂
"God? God is love... I don't love you."
If the Devil ever were to take on human form, I would imagine it would probably be something like this.
Simple and threatening. I'm totally with you. Horns and red skin? I think he is above that. Maybe Belial is doing shit like that.
The Cowboy Lucifer was the most beautiful angel. Son of the morning star.
Horns and red skin was something the media popped off from old paintings of the Devil from various myths? The Devil was actually quite a demure and sinister looking creature.
No he wouldn't be he would be kind .generous. And loving but if you cross him it's your doom.

_I've been around for a long long years, stole many a man's soul and faith. Please to meet you, hope you guess my name_
Der NAme Is H***L.
Evil poopy face?
Christopher Walken was spectacular as Gabriel.
+Jane Winter My sister loved Eric Stoltz character Simon
this scene is about Viggo Mortensen
Woah. His voice is like velvet.
Viggo is one of the most talented actors going.
"I love you more than Jesus" that line at the end of the film always made my hair stand up.
Aragorn takes the ring from Frodo and it grants him power.
htf5555 THE DARK RANGER
I think this guy is Sauron's boss....
Morgoth?
Daniel Devine Yep. Plus Viggo was in LOTR....
I think I worked for him once!
Melkor. Morgoth was a designation the elves gave him, it's not his name. it means "dark enemy". Melkor was the first and most powerful of the Valar. in Middle Earth lore he held essentially same position as Lucifer in Neo-Christian lore.
Imagine that twist, that Elessar was actually the avatar of Melkor.

Lucifers Apprentice Not so much the anti-hero on purpose, more of:
1. the enemy of my enemy is my friend
2. he feels that Gabriel was competition, which he will not abide
*****
It is poor compared to the original story, but 2 & 3 are also poor compared to the 1st film too.
4 & 5 shows his true agenda
Just like Peter Stomare in COnstantine...."This world will be mine....in time." The devil is patient.
His disposition towards her is unique to other movie Devils.
The way he speaks, the things he says, even his mannerisms are all so subtly unnatural.
The typical depiction of the Devil is as that of a business man.

Viggo scares me.
Great performance of Satan by Viggo Mortensen. One of my favorite movies.
I watched this movie about 100 times back in the 90's. I had whole sections of dialogue memorized. (-D
I really liked Mortensen's performance as the devil.
Shouldn't he be helping a hobbit not freaking that women out.
"why can't we do both?"
***** spooky.
Matthew Flanagan you don't know what happened or what they did or how they conspired against me. obviously he knows & he agrees with me.
ANTI MATTA y the face haha
When you stare into the abyss, deep into the darkest crevices of your mind. Do you see a monster staring back at you..... or a reflection
Both, i had acne as a kid,....terrible it was really.
"When you stare into the Abyss, the Abyss stares into you." Or something like that. :)
ThatDutchguy how did you get rid of me lol
Deep

i will never eat yellow roses again

This version of Lucifer is 100% terrifying and awesome. But I'm not gonna lie - I fell from the sofa laughing when he started to eat the flower
The dialogue is what really makes this devil so effective, and of course Viggo's performance.
"God is love. i don't love you"
Just Pure Evil.
I'll never forget that.
Isn't this the same movie that he says, "I love you more than Jesus!"
I kinda liked that Satan. He isn't over the top Just sinister
and subtle enough.
I'm always reminded of the quote from the first Exorcist movie, when the priest attempts to nag the demon within the girl to free itself from its restraints.

My Perspective what is the profile picture meaning for this
He portrays Satan well. The real Satan is cunning, charming, but once exposed he will curse at you like there's no tomorrow.

Viggo played in my opinion the best Lucifer on film. This is the first time I ever saw him on film. That I could recall, then I remembered Young Guns 2.
Been a fan of Viggo's ever since
+CavemanJesus4Life you should see either tim curry in legend or robert de niro in angel heart
steveetienne
I have seen Legend, though Tim Curry wasn't Lucifer. He was Darkness(that was his name) his father was Lucifer
+steveetienne Peter Stormare's portrayal of Lucifer in Constantine is soooooooo much better than both of those performances. Overall, his performance is aesthetically even better than Viggo' Mortensen's, although they convey different aspects of the character's traditional persona. Lietiel
I loved how both were the anti hero(s) of their films
De Niro was great in Angel Heart, good film. I haven't seen the prophecy yet though hope it's good.
"... and how I love you talking monkeys for this..." Best line ever.
Pride goeth before the fall. Lucifer isn't a demon, he's an angel. Devil is a position, a job, a title. Lucifer is his real, true name.
I thought it was Jeff, ...from catering !
i thought it was jake from state farm
+STEVE P Close. The Satan is a position, job, title, etc. God's appointed Accuser of Mankind.
Ruling hell was his punishment for trying to rebel against god. He rebelled because he was angry that God likes us more than Angels.
Love Father John Misty's portrayal of Lucifer.
Faster?
I love how satan ate that rose like it was a carrot 🌹to 🍎🍏🍓🍐🍇

Dat one ring makes us do some wicked crazy shit..
Viggo really does steal every scene he's in!! Kudos sir!!!
He did do a good job with this role. He really gave you the impression that he truly fuckin hated you (humans)
2:29 Not gonna lie best sales pitch for parents looking for last minute Christmas gifts to the day.
"For while Heaven may be closed, I am always open. Even on Christmas."
Hands down, absolute, BEST adaptation of Satan in any movie
he makes that flower look crunchy and yummy lol
I think I'm in love with this version when he says, "God is love. I don't love you." That sold me, that seduced me
Gay
This is Aragorn giving into the ring of power.
Viggo is the gorgeous and convincing Satan! BUT! For me perfect in this role was Rosalinda Celentano in "The Passion of the Christ". She really scared me. Even more! Viggo slayed this part.
Chills.. literal chills!
2 of my favourite actors in one movie
Epic performance. :)
"For while heaven may be closed, I am always open, even on Christmas."
Yeah, that wasn't a request lady.
Viggo was an amazing Lucifer. One of the most iconic scenes. The first movie was the best the second two were disappointing. I adored the singing like a bored mockery to the Almighty.
+Jane Winter Then you would hate the next 2 that came afterwards (parts 4 & 5)
John Light plays Lucifer in those films
I alway felt that aragon looked familiar... only just realized he was from this movie >
...uhm, *AragoRn*...
Aragon is a part of Spain, Aragorn is the King of Gondor.
Stephen Jackson What a coincidence because Viggo also plays Diego Alatriste from Spain.
Easily one of the best/most terrifying versions of the devil in media
I think its the best Lucifer (Viggo) ,Lucifer is serious person, little funny but very scared so i think the best here ,very good is in "Constantine"
I look terrific while wearing Aragorn's face, don't I?
Happy Valentines Day, here's the Devil eating a rose lol
Best version of the devil ever
Viggo Mortenses is fantastic in this scene :D
I love how in the beginning hes just there in the dark background just hanging out. Waiting. Like he's always just waiting there in the dark for all of us lol.
"Like all true loves, one day it withered on the vine..."
My favorite movie version of the devil, Viggo just gives Lucifer such an unsetteling demeanor that you can't help but wonder if this is what the devil is really like

I was 13 when this movie came out and I had no clue that Viggo Mortensen played the devil until this very minute.
I remember having a crush on him back then and unwittingly that crush has followed me to 2018.
This movie is awesome Ive seen it many, many times and still watch it with amusement.
Calls humans talking monkeys, proceeds to chew on stem of a flower.
Along with DeNiro and Claude Rains ("Heaven on My Shoulder, 1946), one of the best portrayals of Lucifer in American film. In British film, Peter Cook as George Spiggot/Lucifer in "Bedazzled."
love this scene.
Super ! I love Mortensen !!!!!!!
Another great Satan i really loved was the one in the movie Constantine with Keanu Reeves...so spot on.
Good Guy Lucifer
See's you walking all confused.
Gives you the chance to talk.
I thought him eating the rose end was the funniest scene in the movie. It was HILARIOUS!
This and Al Pacino's performance as the devil were the best!
I left yellow Rose's for my mother on my 50 birthday, imagine that
The best version of Satan is from the passion of the Christ...that version was portrayed by a woman from Italy. I forget her name, by she is beautiful and was perfect for Lucifer. I love this film. 👍🏻🙏🏻
He is Lucifer, Bringer of Light, and master of temptation, seduction, charm, and even betrayal. What goes better with that than being hot?
The Prophecy with Christopher Walken great movie and I liked Gabriel! This movie was interesting with good angels vs bad angels and Michael & Luficer will battle it out on judgement day and Michael always wins! Michael is my personal favorite****
+Aimee Adesso Not in these movies though. Eric Roberts played Michael and did nothing to help.
Lucifer played a major role in the 4th film, and a small part in the 5th.
Gabriel was the best of the first 3 films
I have not seen those shows. but I will look for those films
Of course he is. He breathes life into my very soul, you could say.
one of the most under rated films came out and vanished
"Be....my victim. Oh wait wrong movie..."
Well I can't argue with that.
please never hesitate the king of business
“FOR ROHAN!!!”
The devil has never looked more attractive.
The only portrayal of the devil that gives me the full on hebegebees.
VIGGO did a good job as LUCIFER. But my FAVORITE is TIM CURRY as DARKNESS in LEGEND. That was a EPIC performance.
The music is so captivating...
Truest words ever spoken God is love and the Devil does not LOVE US. He hates us and always will!
FOR MORDOR!!!
Love the dark roots. This movie definitely has its moments, but some really corny tongue in cheek ones, too.
I don't know why but seeing him eat a flower is a hilarious to me.
Satans a slacker lol "I've turned rivers to blood " lol Gabriel
Eating a flower, didn't see that coming.
And his Lucifer suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucks compared to Viggo.
Yeah, the idea was that the Heaven Gabriel was trying to make would, as Satan put "just be another Hell." Which he can't have. So even though he hates humans, he'd rather maintain the balance then lose his strong hold.
Damn he's cruel in this scene
Stole De Niro's slicked-back look as the Devil in Angel Heart.
Rolling Ormond Slick hair is a corner of evil in general. Either that or bald. Look at the hoody demon bdsm fuck in the vid, he knows what i'm talkin' about!
Lucifer is such an intriguing character.
That is the Candyman girl!
wicked... luv this movie.
For while heaven is closed I am always open even on Christmas
That man can do ANYTHING!
