Small credit error at 6:35. This is actually Tai'ichirō Ohara, coincidentally another quite underrated animator that has had a lengthy history with this franchise🙂
Toriyama would always show characters reacting, moving and interacting with their surroundings. Character acting is fundamental to dragonball's identity. Onishi is perfect for the role
I wouldn't exactly say he's underrated, but he hasn't done many Dragon Ball cuts so I get why he isn't the first name fans would think of, but the cuts he has done are all absolutely excellent and bouncy. The scene of Goku jumping around and warming up before fighting Broly was the first Teaser we saw for that film and got a strong reaction out of everyone.
Within forums on Kanzenshuu or Sakugabooru he certainly isn't although amongst the general fandom I believe he is. And while I do feel the amount of work he has done on dragon ball may play into not having a lot of name recognition. Yuya Takahashi had only worked on two episodes within Super yet became a superstar overnight thanks to his work on 114. Rather I would put it more down to that a lot of Dragon Ball fans rate detailed character art and style over how well something is animated which is partly why Masaki Sato's name is so well known despite animators like Taiichiro Ohara who had mixed character art but much better animation is largely unknown 🙂
@ForgottenRelics Yeah, Takahashi became very popular after only one episode, but remember, though, he brought the nostalgic iconic late Z art back. Let's not forget also, he supervised an episode. Onishi's cuts are pretty short, and he stuck to the modern Yamamuro designs that most don't care for. He's now only starting to get recognised after his cuts on Broly. Hopefully, he does a lot more in the future.
Onishi can make things move so life like even fluid at times if not most of the time, it's very impressive, that's why he's one of my favorites in Toei
His art is quite simple and isn't as detailed as something produced by a Takahashi or Shida, but his animations are some of the best at Toei and easily make up for this. Onishi's cut on episode 14 of DBS blew me out of the water (pun intended) introducing me to his other work.
Gotta say I do like his aura shapes from how they resemble a flickering fire in the way it moves during the power ups. I think thats what Super Saiyan Aura kind of should be. Not literal fire looking like SSG but the way it moves aggressively.
i like Yuya Takashi for his character art specifically, but I do recognize that other animators are just as good or even better than him in terms of animation
I like Takahashi's characters mostly because he takes cues from the Buu saga of Z the most and replicates it in the characters strongly. His scene with Broly charging at the camera in the movie for example was the best. However I think he recycles a bit too much from his own animations or mirrors stills from Z too much that it doesn't look original.
i think the eye popping shock expression Chilled used is one thats pretty underused in the series for reaction scenes, even though its something I think Toriyama used pretty often. There is something about modern dragonball anime not really using as much of the facial expressions from the comedic side of Toriyama as much as it just goes with stock faces like the "quivering" jaw reaction.
He's been my favorite Dragon Ball animator ever since Episode of Bardock came out. His style may not be as sharp as Takahashi or as detailed as Shida, but the fluidity of his character's movements, and just how they seem to never STOP moving, is what makes him the best animator working on Dragon Ball today IMO
ryo onishi is one of my favorite animators after watching the dbs broly movie! His animation is just so good! alot of people say its ugly but its the animation that really sold me very well!

My three favorite animators by far are Yutaka Nakamura, Ryo Onishi, and Takashi Kojima. They all have outstandingly fluid animation, sense of power, and have perfected rotation, movement, sense of speed and scale, and so much more in their animation.
Some thing i definitely missed in Dragonball are the little things like Hair and clothing reacting to wind in a believable way. And Ryo definitely brings that to the table.
DBS Broly animation aside, the aura effects just aren’t as good in super. They lack the drama and environmental destruction seen in Z. I want more power ups like when Piccolo surprises first form cell in Z. Auras where at their best in the Cell arc
I half agree, the God forms looked better in BOG and Super, I didn't like the SSJ one much. But the Blue aura looked much better in the movie than the others, I love when Blue Gogeta did that power up stance, before charging at Broly, that looked great, including the aura's that Goku had when he transformed.
I honestly don't like the aura effects in the Broly movie personally or when they over do it with the effects. Like the CGI or the multi colored effects they use, or the lack of consistent movement with them. I always preferred it and the Ki blasts when it just looked and moved like bright light 2 toned colors. Similar to how its done in the Bardock Episode with Chilled with his ki.

Takahashi's models are what I prefer and I think is the best in Super. But technically Takahash's work would be considered off model as well when being compared to the new age Yamamoru designs.
I'm a big fan of Takhashi's models as well! Regardless though good animation isn't based upon highly rendered stills, rather it's the depiction of movement through a series of combined drawings and it's why he is still one of the best animators working at Toei despite iffy art in places.
@@forgottenrelics1197 People are still confused about the difference between art and animation and how both are graded. I prefer top tier art with decent animation over something that's well animated and is decently(acceptable) or poorly drawn. Studio Seigasha may have had more detail drawn in debris, explosions, fighting choreography, and overall more frames than Studio Junio, but I would still pick Junio as my animator team even though they may lack minor qualities Seigasha has. It's hard to explain. Junio's animation is great to me. Episodes like 28, 34, 48, and 64 are enjoyable watch. Maybe Seigasha episodes are better animated or are just animated differently???
My only real criticism is that sometimes I think he goes a bit too much on the animations but I think might just be my preference. Aldo, the blue lightning used in Goku's SSJ in the Broly movie. Blue lightning is mostly (not always!) SSJ2, and for a second I thought Goku was going to go straight to 2. It's my favorite looking form, so I was massively disappointed it didn't happen.
Yeah, Dragon Ball isn't really known for being bouncy and filled with movement so the amount of character acting can feel a little unusual at first glance. I personally remember being a little mixed when I first saw his scene of Goku for the first trailer. But over time I've come to love how much energy he packs into his scenes!
@@jasonone8726 No, I meant to say that in the two serious Goku v. Vegeta fights in Z, a bouncy character movement style would have felt very out of place, because those fights in particular have really intense personal motivations and are full of tension.
Honestly surprised that this is name you mispronounce. There've definitely been tougher ones in past videos that you've nailed. Anyway, Ryo is pronounced 'ree-yo'. No disrespect. Love your animator videos. Japanese is very phonetic language. It's not like english where you have long vowels and short vowels. When Japanese is written with english letters, it's pronounced basically exactly how it's written. If something in Japanese is written with a 'y', you can be pretty certain the 'y' is pronounced like "*y*ack" and not like "fl*y*".

Next naoki (fuqing) tate Please 😁
Yeah, I've been thinking of doing a video on Tate for a while now, that's originally who this video was going to be on before opting for Onishi.
For the algorithm
Can you analyze Naoki Tate one day?
most likely
Can you please do naoki miyahara # ssj2 Gohan transformation
Who animated the vegeta vs broly fight? I loved that fight in the movie.
Yuya Takahashi.
Cuts are the same as shots. They're one shot until the camera cuts.
3:02 would be a sequence.
Damn i got here early
Love the acting though
Holy sht he did that gintama scene😂
@@forgottenrelics1197 I think it works pretty well in more comedic fights (Chilled, Ribrianne etc.) but I'm not sold for say, Goku v. Vegeta.
@@specialnewb9821 He didn't do the Goku vs Vegeta sparring part, is that what you're talking about?
@@jasonone8726 No, I meant to say that in the two serious Goku v. Vegeta fights in Z, a bouncy character movement style would have felt very out of place, because those fights in particular have really intense personal motivations and are full of tension.
I feel animation is stuck between wanting to be realistic, but understanding limitations. This artist ignores limitations
I just don't like how the designs look in his style in dbs broly but his animation looks great!
It's the Shintani designs that he stuck to.
What ep?
1:02 That's some of the most realistic walking in DB lol
sure is haha
Can you do a review of Instagram Dragonball artist @fenyo_n? I'd like you to analyze his work.
Already did last August :)

@@forgottenrelics1197 A LEGEND IN THE FLESH. And here I thought I watched all of your videos (:
For future reference the name "Ryo" is pronounced "Ree-oh," minor nitpick
He's the only animator in toei I ever liked
Huh? Yuya Takahashi, Masaki Satou, Naotoshi Shida, Maasaki Iwane, Keisuke Masunaga, Masahiro Shimanuki and Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru and many others.
Then you must barely know any animators in Toei.
Hasn’t Ryo mostly been working on one piece before moving to dragon ball super broly?
Yeah as well within other shows like Tiger Mask W.
Although I'm unaware as to the specific amount of episodes he has worked on within One Piece.
No, he's been one of the main animators on various other shows and movies. He mostly worked on OP early in his career.
Hey
hey hey
@@forgottenrelics1197 hey hey hey
In my opinion... The most underrated animator on Dragon Ball has to be Yuichi Karasawa
Oh yeah, he's amazing, I believe he supervised episode 129 of Super, I always loved the whole look of that one.
@@jasonone8726 He also did the episode in which Frieza cam back to life in ep 97
Agreed, he certainly isn't given enough credit :)
@@forgottenrelics1197 although his facial features aren’t always up to par, but his UI Goku art and his hands are AMAZING
@@forgottenrelics1197 for some reason TH-cam unsubbed me from you. Don’t piss me off TH-cam
Naotoshi Shida solos the animating verse
My top three are Richard Williams, Milt kahl, and Frank Thomas
Tfw the characters actually move 😳😳😳😳😳
revolutionary indeed
Damn I didn’t know he made the Luffy crying scene, he really sold the desperation in his movements
Yeah the character acting in that scene is next level. I haven't even watched One Piece and it made me sad haha
wasnt a fan at all of the switch to this style right after takahashi, felt very jarring and the art feels off to me.. animation isn't bad though.
Ryo Onishi is better Naoki Tate than Naoki Tate
ngl i think onishi is better than naotoshi shida and takahashi
huh???? this guy doing too much.
I like tate better but he is still
Thank u relics
