  • Yukio Ebisawa and Masayuki Uchiyama have garnered quite a notrious reputation amongst dragonball fans for supervising some of the poorest-looking episodes in the series. However, who was the better between the two, and is this criticism valid? Well, join me today as we dive into the work of Ebisawa and Uchiyama!

It's common that the Art Team put more effort into the HIGHLIGHT of the SAGA than in the filler. I say Cell saga together with Android saga had one of the best and worst animated sequences in anime. If you look into consistency than Frieza Saga was the best animated and drawn saga in entire Anime.

It's almost like Uchiyama resisted Toriyama's move to a more angular style in the Z arcs, and tried to adhere the rounded look of original Dragon Ball. At least Yukio "triangle man" Ebisawa's overly sharp artstyle meshed better with the more defined angularity of Z onward. I guess we can thank Uchiyama for giving us the gift of Naotoshi Shida, but even then I wouldn't be surprised if Uchiyama's constant -downgrades- corrections were what led to Shida moving on to more capable studios where his talents flourished.

I think there problem is trying to shift to a more drama action anime versus the cartoony works that they've been used to in early dragon ball and dr slump there treating it like a cartoon that needs to be simple for the sake of children to be able to understand what's happening Despite Z being more of a teenage action series.

That's one thing I appreciate about _Dragon Ball Super's_ animation. The character designs were more consistent.

Ebisawa had much more good animation overall than Uchiyama.
Uchiyama was BEAST at the times of the first series - at the Z part he became the weakest link for sure, though still he was doing nice in general. He should've been improving on his visuals and the style though.
And Ebisawa - indeed made some strange parts at Z - but he became an absolute BEAST at the second part of Z!
He was still in the earliest parts too but not all of them. Just like in the second part though (the fight of Gotenks and Buu was pretty weak in comparison).
But when he was doing good - he WAS doing good!

While I liked Uchiyama's art in og and Saiyan arc, in Namek I don't remember that much about it I don't think he was that much involved tbh, in Cell saga it wasn't bothering me that much (except for when he was drawing Cell, I HATED seeing Cell by Uchiyama), then the Buu arc... jesus christ.. I recently rewatched the arc and there's nothing that bothered me more than his art in Buu arc. I think at least 40% of Buu saga was animated and drawn by him. The Buu saga is known for its artwork and animation upgrade that looked just like the movies, but Uchiyama just ruins it for me, everytime I'd start an episode of Buu saga and see the first frame by him I'm like "Ohh f*ck no". Definitely bothered me in Buu saga more than any arc (in terms of artwork ofc his animation is ok)

Even watching as a kid, I could tell something was up with with character design sometimes. I'm certainly no art critic, and don't have much room to speak. But my big gripe with the series was the shape of people's heads. As long as the faces were drawn in decent proportion, everything else was minor to me.
