I have always found it fascinating that skaters brave enough to do such insane tricks are so utterly terrified of the possibility of their friends making fun of them for wearing a helmet. Ponder that for a minute.
It's more they accept the risk and train to prevent it. They literally don't want it to be safer.
As a kid I cared about looks too. Got older and realized there’s to much to lose without a helmet.
It’s not that difficult to wrap your head, he he, around
@@zerosk8er453sbullshit. Everybody wants to be happy. To be happy longer to do more things they enjoy.
It's not that.
Andy Anderson, that's all I'm saying. ❤

Damn right. Andy is amazing.
Andy Anderson needs to start selling his custom helmets again. Shits been outta stock for over a year
Absolutely. Andy is changing things…
I fell over and hit my head and had a bleed on my cerebellum which is in control of all motory and sensory functions. I wasn’t allowed to drink alcohol as it thins the blood out, wasn’t allowed aspirin or sleeping pills. It was really hard to sleep and get sleep pattern back to normal. I had a stroke due to it and was extremely lucky to have no long lasting damage thank god 👏❤️ it wasn’t from skating but I would highly recommend people to protect their brains, being told i had avoided a 70 percent chance of paralysis was really a blessing!!

Very unexpected and awesome to see a Huberman x Nine Club collab. Two of my favorites!
Pro's in both Skateboarding and Snowboarding have said they don't wear helmets because it hinders their style and they feel better not wearing one. The problem is, these are pro's, the kids looking up to them are not and are more prone to getting hurt. Parents should make sure their kids are wearing helmets, once they are old enough they can decide for themselves.
CTE hinders your entire life
@@teamworm5932sadly helmets are pretty useless at stopping cte as it’s caused simply by repeated hits no matter how light and helmets don’t stop the brain from bouncing off the skull.
I like this video,it's fitting. I was listening to the interview with Deville yesterday and when you talked about Andy Anderson and the helmet thing, it made me question how useful a helmet is in street skating.
Common sense. Use a helmet to limit exposure to any head injuries. It's your decision if you want to be exposed to risk or minimize it
@@StrangerrDangerI’d love to see some actual data of how common head injuries with long term consequences actually are in top level street skaters.
@leastselfawarepotassium Yea, but that's tough, especially when there is no funding to follow them over the course of years/decades to assess the type of damages or health risks. For example, in soccer, the very long-term studios show micro tears or micro related injuries, which affect different health related issues. I think with skateboarding, these micro movements of the brain in your skull are more of an issue to study rather than full head slams
@@StrangerrDangerpossibly. I just think having actual evidence would be more effective than “just wear a helmet, it’s obviously better”. I understand the resources might not be there to gather that evidence though.
@leastselfawarepotassium I mean, regardless, it's been proven that any sudden movements of whiplash do damage ur brain regardless (minor or major). But nowadays, with helmets, they come with inner membranes that move separate from outer shells to mitigate it, and bikers use that all the time. The culture just isn't pushing for the use of safety gear in skateboarding, and that's the main barrier.
Hey i smacked my head hard with no helment often and it definitely changed my personality and disposition over time.
Im 33 now my joints and tons of bones have been broken. i can't even skate anymore, and it blows. Just wear a helment guys the average skater doesn't get to go hard on a board for very long unless you have tons of money and the best insurance. Protect your self and you can ride way longer.
Thanks for the warning, but also, skill issue.

Did you hang up?
@@MyName1sJosh from what I was told, yeah.
I hit a windshield in a car accident when I was 18, we were going like 40 mph and the other car was trying to turn in front of us, I got knocked out for like 20-30 seconds, felt different after that and it never went away, depression and anxiety and low energy and low drive after that, life changed for me and unfortunately it’s permanent
As skateboarders we are more trained in falling than anything. In other sports you can’t train another person to hit you.
Skateboarding. The only sport where you will never hit your head.
Pretty much, it’s pretty hard to hit your head street skating unless you fall backwards on a rail and cant spot your way to stay on your feet. Vert is a different story since your constantly shooting the board back and forth over your head and can launch to moon and back to your head right as you start turning your head upwards after slamming and loose a tooth. True story
@@trixonic6934yeah. Or if something totally unexpected happens - like when the board works it way back under your feet when you bail. That’s happened to me many times but never resulted in hitting my head. I truly hit my head one time learning tre flips on flat as a kid after skating for like a year. I didn’t anticipate actually landing on it and slipped out. Ironically, it was at an indoor park and I had a helmet on lol.
I’ve been skateboarding for 35 years and I’ve slammed thousands of times skating Street and I’ve only hit my head once and that’s when I was drunk. I had to wear a helmet when I was forced to at the skate park, It felt awkward and heavy and I didn’t like it. But that’s just me.

While I agree. When I stopped wearing a helmet while riding my bike a few years later I went back to Wearing a helmet. Messed with my vision bad and balance etc. rode into a telephone pole going hella fast and never wore one since
Tbh I been skating almost 30 years and I never wore a helmet and im not gonna start now. It’s the risk I assume, and if I end up brain dead it’s my fault
I wear a helmet because I love skating, but I also have people in my life who are important to me, and my continued brain function is important to them. Dr. Huberman is not a neuro specialist, and I suspect if he was, he would be downplaying CTE a lot less than this.
@@gyrate98 OK cool guy. You're so awesome.
@@rustysarkela7754 You're simply selfish. You think it's about you. It's not. If you ended up dead, then yeah, your family would have to "worry" about it. But what if you end up badly injured. Did you give any thought to burden you will be on the people around you? How you will make their lives an absolute miserable nightmare? Having to do everything for you. Maybe you should go volunteer a day in a hospital helping to take care of people with injuries that limit their function in daily life. Try it. See how fun it is. And then think about you being that to those around you.
I just don’t understand why people cannot accept that not everything is a safety culture. It is dangerous. It is risky. It is gnarly. It’s the whole point. If you want to wear a helmet, then wear one. But I’m not gonna co sign it, especially among pros. It will never be cool.
Here’s a good way to look at this. First off you should never dissuade anyone from being safer, second, if you have or would tell your children to wear a helmet regardless of skiing, snowboarding, biking, skydiving, or skating then you should feel a bit like a hypocrite. Third, you should be wearing a helmet if your going to tell them they should. Fourth, I know everyone in this conversation doesn’t want to be paralyzed or brain dead and I don’t want that for anyone. So maybe you should get over that pride, have some humility, set an example and wear a helmet. If you support and watch sports that wear and support helmets then maybe think about why you don’t since you don’t think anything of it when your favorite football player, or hockey player is wearing one. In the end I believe we have some responsibilities as adults to set examples.. this leads into other lessons learned for the youth not just wearing a helmet. I personally don’t find it ok to promote skating without a helmet. I think the argument should be in favor all the time but up to the skater. Don’t defend not wearing one. I never wore one for the entirety of my skating until recently. I like what Andy promotes. It’s a big risk to take every time you go out there… I bet the majority of you wear seatbelts?? Similar in risk… if you don’t wear a helmet why do you wear a seatbelt? My 5 cents. Thanks for reading
A helmet saved my head a few times.
As an old-school BMX rider from the 80s and 90s, I'm pretty sure I have CTE or brain damage because I've had like 9 concussions and a few had me KOed for like 8 hours before realizing what happened.... In one situation my friends let me fall asleep for a few hours and when I woke up I was in the unbelievable pain because I had fractured my shoulder, humerus, neck, hip, spine and femer also cracked my jaw, cheekbone and skull and had bleeding of the brain. They wanted to drill a hole in my skull to relieve the pressure but when they took the second scan the blood had disappeared so I was lucky but I'm pretty sure it messed me up.... Just not sure how yet but I'm pretty sure something is broken in my self-preservation part of my brain because I still ride and I'm now 42. Now I have no choice but to wear a helmet because the Mrs doesn't want to deal w/ me being broken again.... When we first met we was supposed to go on a date but I had to reschedule because I crashed a motorcycle into a street sign and fractured both bones in my left forearm and hit my head, again for probably the 200th time. When she found out that's why I canceled she came down and didn't leave for almost a month.... Now we have a 10 year old son and I cannot leave the house w/ my bike unless I have a helmet. 😂❤😂
I definitely got brain damage from snowboarding, karate and randomly slamming my head. Makes me worried
What convinced me beyond seeing Andy was seeing the LEGENDS like Tony, Cab, Bucky, and others still skating vert at their age.
You know what’s cooler than a 20 year old who lost their short term memory from a slam? A 50-year-old dude still ripping on a board.
That’s because they skate vert. The impact on your body isn’t close to same. Not really related to wearing a helmet.
@@leastselfawarepotassium just tell yourself that, it’s fine.
The old mentality of “only vert dudes should wear pads!” doesn’t work any more. I’ve seen heads cracked open from jumping down stairs.
When you get older, you’ll understand.
@@box3yI’m 37 with no head injuries and very pro helmet. You’re barking up the wrong tree. Doesn’t change the fact that the longevity of vert skaters is due to the reduced impact of vert, not helmet use directly. Street skaters will not suddenly be skating at a high level at 50 if they start wearing helmets.
@@leastselfawarepotassium I'd say also a big part of it is being able to knee slide out of a fall and KNOWING how to fall as being a part of being able to progress and having the skill to drop in a 10ft tall monster of a wall again and again. You probably know already having a long ability to skate is knowing how to roll, slide, flip, position, preventing your wrists and arms being hung up/ broken, etc for the least amount of damage. Vert skaters have it part of the territory. No helmet or pads is going to save you from repeated blows, but I'll say this, although not directly skateboarding, but vert BMXer Dave Mirra committed suicide and was posthumously diagnosed with CTE. There's a few skaters possibly with CTE - Cole (mentioned on video concussions and multiple memory loss, recent family drama), Bam, Boulala....
Huberman x skateboarding. My worlds collide once again. I think I remember him commenting on a thrasher video or some skate video and was going crazy. I think it was a Gary Rogers video, think they mentioned him or he commented also something like that.
I’m all about helmets, but I’d like to ask Hubes how effective they are as most brain damage seems to be less from the actual impact (skulls are pretty thick) and more from the brain whipping around inside your skull?
The Harold hunter interview will be the most interesting one. Plus some unseen Harold clips and stories and such. And talking about the Brooklyn banks coming back.
When falling backwards, "tuck your chin" (burry it kn your chest). It will protect the back of your neck and head. Keep your arms in, too. Reaching back will get your arms broke. Straighten your body, and it will disperse the impact, too.
@@brucebruno842 yeah and than someone looses control over his board and smacks your brain out while your down 🤦🏻 a helmet is also to be prepared against some accidents caused by idiots
@youtube.is.censored.speech I mean if you learned to skate without a helmet. It's very difficult to start wearing one later, since your head is a major balancing point. I started in the 90s, so undoing what's there and relearning would be too much. I haven't even hit my head, thankfully.
@@brucebruno842 It is literally a piece of plastic and foam. I mean if I go into a bowl or vertical it's a must, and since I also started downhill Longboarding 15 years ago there is no excuse for not wearing a helmet and pads. broke some ribs, multiple sprained ankles, torn ACL, but only head injury was early years trying to skate vert. Me being very naive and very new to vert, had no idea that the ramp wasn't supposed to be that slick. lost control and busted half of one of my front teeth out. didn't go back there for a few months, and by the time I did, the guy who built and painted that ramp had NEVER did anythign about hte paint, just let people wear down the paint until it had enough grip to the surface. To this day, I wonder if anyone else got hurt on it.
On a side note, that was the ramp I first saw any pro skate vert in person. about 6 months after my faceplant, I went back with a couple of friends to go try vert again and it just so happened Omar Hassan showed up un-announced and was doing over head-high madonna's(front foot that you take off and dropdown was over headhigh!).
I skated vert for many decades and did not wear a helmet a lot of the time but I also did wear a helmet a lot of the time too. I am messed up I have taken a lot of slams I've had a lot of concussions and skateboarding and I'm worried about cte. I saw an interview with Tony hawk where they can do a genetic predisposition testing for it but they really can't test you for it until an autopsy which is unfortunate. Wear your helmet kids
Some are self destructive... Some forget to remember the future.
Summary:
If your pushing yourself to the limit and worried about CTE, you should definitely wear a helmet.
Neck training can be helpful in reducing/avoiding head injuries.
Getting two separate head injuries that are individually not serious can be serious if they are two close together in time. After a significant head injury you should seriously avoid hitting your head for a year (wearing a helmet/dialing back risk a lot)
I'm curious how many pro street/freestyle skaters are worried about CTE. Vert/downhill makes sense too me even with a helmet.
My heads had more hits than the beatles
My wheel got locked in a crack and I got thrown, didn’t hit my head but slammed so hard I got a concussion, but at the same time my mom called me and I was so lost in what was being said that I knew I needed to stop skating. This is scenario and fall is what happens most in skateboarding and that’s why I had to get out of it.
Yeah people who praise helmets have zero idea that helmets are a 1920s concept.
In 2024 we know The brain bounces off the skull, not the ground. You don’t even need to hit your head, any sudden stops of momentum cause the brain to hit the skull.
I actually feel sorry for the guys who believed a helmet was protecting them, it should be looked at more as a 30% defensive boost in a video game then something that will “ save “ your brain.
I think most extreme sports wear helmets now. Skateboarding and surfing will figure this out eventually.
andy anderson and vert skaters are the only ones that can get away with it, thate the fun part of the skating rolling the dice, otherwise quit skatinhand do something if your comcerned with your health
When we were younger the biggest thing we were doing was maybe 5 step gaps and CCS rails and stuff. Yeh you would look a little dorky wearing a helmet skating around with your friends like that, but if you are doing big hand rails, ramps, big gaps… fuck what people think
Just wear one when you're not skating mellow, I don't wear one when I'm just chilling, but I don't drop in or do tricks without one :/
Here’s the thing skating is an art with style that come with risk! I believe most skaters have more body damage than head damage long term! Especially the get ol term you get old once you stop skating! Safety is important , But we’re all smart enough to know the risk and we live by that risk everyday

Huberman is full of it. I used to work as a neuroscientist, and he should not be on the internet. Are there no baseball type hats with at least some protective padding that look cooler than a helmet? Everything is better than nothing.
i can see this becoming a thing in the future. you need someone cool to start it and have it be a fashion thing almost. there are beanie helmets and you could clip off the straps and probably pull it off. so long as it's not very obvious that it's protective gear and is more subtle.
For those wondering why he doesn’t advocate for a helmet it’s because he’s a data guy. When the helmet was invented we didn’t understand the brain, we LITERALLY thought you could put one on and bang your head against a wall. It’s now 2024, your brain bounces off your skull not the ground, a helmet would need to be inbetween them to stop this.
Also in 24 head contact is irrelevant, simply falling and having your momentum stop fast enough jolts your brain enough to give you CTE if it happens enough times even if you’ve NEVER hit your head.
Can’t do it, ima get more folded with it on
I know I have brain damage from skating gaps. Not noticeable young but it gets worse as you age
Brain damage is not sexy or cool. Put a helmet on when you skate people!!
Heck i would even go out on a limb and say wear even more protection. If all i have seen is how pro skaters dont even get paid enough why risk it. For seasoned skaters who know the risk, at least wear the proper protection for the falls that might occur during the trick and obstacle you are working on.
Unfortunately it’s just not how we were raised watching skating. That’s why Andy sticks out in these conversations. Futile efforts. Better off teaching how to bails like trick tips are taught because we’re not going to change. Magazine’s are going to continue to publish 99% of street skaters not wearing them. Barking up the wrong tree imo. The danger factor is a part of skateboarding.

EGO. I've had a helmet save my skull more than 4 times skating. This notion of fall better! I was a gymnast for 10 years and in high level competition - ask me about falling properly and having skills for it. Actually don't... because you cant account for the next fall that is totally wack. That was no helmet. I could jump off a house roof and roll out of it but man - it catches you out sooner or later. Train your neck?? Go ahead and do it if you want to have that in your arsenal but the next fall you take might be completely random and messed up at a strange angle - basically no time or way to change the outcome. Been there done that. WEAR A HELMET.

Not arguing against helmets at all but if you’ve hit your head that many times with supposedly good falling skills you should stop skateboarding. Most people don’t hit their heads that many times in their whole career.

If you’re hitting your head skateboarding and you are not sponsored or pro then clearly it is not the right thing for you and you are doing it wrong. I’ve been skating for 18 years , since I was 12 , and I have never hit my head once before. That’s clearly because I skate on my skill level and would definitely not jump and a 16 if I haven’t done a 12 and I would hit a 20 stair rail if I haven’t hit a 15 stair rail. That and some people have no balance at all and should not be riding a skateboard !!
Well I've been skating for 30 years and hit my head. It's not skill level mate, if you skate transition, it is very easy to hit your head.

Compare how Huberman talks about Alcohol to how he talks about CTE.
Alcohol - there is no safe amount. Don't drink.
CTE - meh, if you're gonna have a bad fall without a helmet, don't have another one in a year and get enough sleep.
If he's serious about CTE, the advice should be that you should wear a helmet at all times, no ifs or buts.

@ciaranedward8027 People know skating is dangerous. All you can do is teach people about the risk of head injuries but you can't force them to wear helmets. You can still get brain damage while wearing a helmet if you hit your head hard enough. Best thing is to teach people how to bail properly and not to do things beyond their skill level. Lowers the chance of injury but the risk is always there of course since even pros have gotten seriously hurt.
