      Not trying to be whatever, but the reason why the 338 didn't penetrated has many is because you used FMJ compared to the steel core from the 50

    To be fair the 50bmg is an anti-material round, the 338 is designed for soft targets, it was never meant to punch through armour.

  • @iraadams7459
    @iraadams7459 5 ปีที่แล้ว +43

    The plates for the .50 were braced better. A lot of the .338s energy was absorbed by moving the stack. You might have gotten a hundred more if the stack hadn't moved so much.

      @A D Even so - the stack used for the 338 was loose enough for a lot of kinetic energy, and thus penetration, to be dissipated by the springiness of the stack.

    As a comparison, I would think it would be interesting to tape the entire stack of paper plates tightly together. I understand you are doing it to break it up into more manageable chunks to make it easier to find the bullets and count the plates, but I think you are losing a ton of ballistic energy at the junctions. I'd bet a shiny nickel that if they were all taped tightly together, you would get markedly different results. Just a suggestion :-) Love the videos! Keep up the good work! (and FYI, I have the IDENTICAL set up to your 338 and you are right, it is AWESOME!)

    Makes me wonder if it's physically possible for a person to hold and fire a 50bmg, what's the limit we can get to caliber wise via inventing/engineering ie recoil reduction, weight, portability and so on. To me we are barely scratching the surface of what's possible with firearms. Like I always say, those who say it can't be done are the ones who never will.

    OF COURSE the steel core bullet will penetrate much further than the soft lead bullet. As stated in other comments, the plates were not equally braced and stabilized. The .50 had a solid steel core and had its jacket removed while the .338 was pure lead and much softer which led to much less penetratrion so it wasn't a fair test

    • @matthewwolfe7962
      @matthewwolfe7962 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's why you thought the 50 BMG looked smaller and it was from the copper jacket being torn off

  • @kenoday7562
    @kenoday7562 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Did the tape around the plates cause the energy to be absorbed in a different way than free standing plates? And I would agree that the rounds were not comparable, steel core vs lead. But it was cool none the less!

    how about trying a 3006 180 g, 7mm mag 175g, and then the 338 LM into the paper plates

    FN 5.7x28 and 22 Mag. And if ya knowing anyone who has a 22 hornet throw that into the test.

    Had you used Monolithic bullets in the .338 LM ammo, it would have gone farther. It looks like you used a standard Cup, and Core Jacketed Bullet. Try this again, with some solid copper Bullets, and see what a difference they will make. Barne's, and Lehigh Defense make them, as components, and loaded ammo. The 50BMG will have a Steel Core, even if it's not A.P. So the Jacket will peel off, but the core will continue.

    50bmg is anti Armor round while 338 lapua is long distance straight hitter. You can't compare both in same category. Being twice the size of lapua the 50bmg packs more punch with bullet weight but will it's on larger size to carry. Question is what mission requirements. ☝️😎

    If you locked the plates down like the 50 plates the 338 would have went further

  • @brucecoleman7412
    @brucecoleman7412 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think that the bullet would have gone through more plates if it hadn’t been able to push the stack back. Maybe an unmovable back stop would help. The stack for the BMG didn’t move, allowing the bullet to penetrate more plates.

    Mate, I think that comparing these 2 rifles is a bit over board, in all fairness the 338 lapua magnum wasn't a solid bullet as one gentleman said below, the 50BMG was a solid bullet, different bullets different job, so in fact it wasn't a real test of each rifle ability, I know you fellows love your guns, but please be a little bit more practical, if the 338 Lapua had the same bullet type as the 50BMG it might have been a better result, as our friend said below, the 338 Lapua magnum test with the paper plates were not clamped tight as the 50BMG, so on this alone it wasn't a fair comparison of each type of Bullet. To make the comparison of the different type projectile, it would be far better to judge each projectile on its own merit, work out what job each will be used for,cost of projectiles, then compare them on amount of destruction or penetration it can do, for value , then work out the cost of efficiency.
    Then I think you will get a better result. regards Trevor.W.Bacelli. Biloela Qld Australia.

    Alright! So you have answered the question for the first video idea I had I just hadn't got this far down on your TH-cam page yet! I think I still would like to know if you had a small budget and you could only have one all purpose rifle that would put food on your table, be good for self defense, and the ammo doesn't break the bank what would it be besides the 22 lr? Thinking about things that would happen on a ranch or any decent amount of property. I know you love the 450 bushmaster and the 4570 but I'm sure those rounds have to be on the expensive side! I think boxes of 3030 are still around 15 or 16 bucks. It would just be cool to know what you think with your experience even if you don't make a video about it.

      @@WHOTEEWHO ok cool! I'm sorry if I'm being a bother because I really dont mean to be! Thanks for the info! One last thing for the moment though! Do you have a 10 gauge or access to one? Some 10 gauge videos would really be cool and I know there are a lot of paper plates and milk jugs just waiting to be vaporized! Have a good rest of your night!

    When shooting the lapua brace the plates so the plates don't take the energy and fall off the table !
    The 50 had a brace in the front and the back
    Lock the plates in like you did for the 50 i think you could go through approx 1,300 plates
    Thank you

  • @chrisperry320
    @chrisperry320 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yeah I agree with people said earlier, let’s get apple to apple. The lead round of 338 has much lesser penetration than Steel core. I would believe that 338 with steel core would go lot better than that, though 50 BMG will beaten it anyways..
