    The 338 Lapua has a 1600 meter range and it is not only great for hunting but also as a military sniper rifle. The British Army uses the 338 Lapua as its sniper round in an Accuracy International platform. The Lapua round are less expensive than the 50 BMG and it is more practical overall.

    I reload 338 Lapua for 60 cents each. Yep, 60 cents. That is with 200g Speers over H414. Reloading costs for the Berger and Sierra 300's are $1.15. The 285 Hornady ELDM's are also $1.15 over H1000/Retumbo. Reloading equipment pays for itself QUICK

      @@corymallo581 Yes that cost does not include brass. I consider brass a one time cost for the 338 LM and lump it in with the gun. 100 rounds reloaded 10 times is 1,000 and I don't think I'll ever shoot that much. Even if brass cost you $2.50 a piece and you only get 8 reloads out of it you're only adding about 31 cents.

      @@corymallo581 He is very close on the reloading cost. I load 300 grain Nosler Custom Competition bullets, Hogden H-1000 powder, CCI primers, and Lapua brass. Have both myself. I find myself shooting the 50 more often. Only because of the fun factor. Has nothing to do with practically. But there are better options above the RN-50 that don’t cost as much as the model 99.
    Theres the Serbu BFG-50. Bolt action and a good 1500-2000 cheaper than the Barrett model 99. Or the Noreen ULR, about the same price as the BFG-50. If I’m going to creep up toward the 5k mark on a Barrett 99, I’d probably just save a bit more and go all the way into the auto-loading market (think BFG-50a.
    At the end of the day, shoot whatever works for you and brings a smile to your face

    I went through this exact debate some years ago. Ended up with that same savage in 338. Ppu338 at the time was 2.50 a shot and 50 bmg was 5$. Then they swapped for the pandemic. I bought me a case of 50 bmg for 2.25 a round when I seen it go for that. Just to have on the shelf for when I find a deal on a 50 bmg... and happen to have the money to splurge on it. I'd like to own a 50BMG but my wallet says no, lol. For hunting anything from deer to moose or grizzly, a 45-70 or a 300WM can get the job done. Can be really cheap and get it done with a 12 gauge shotgun. It'll all come down to where the hunt is and the range. If it's for protection, it's hard to beat a lever action 45-70 or a 12 gauge shotgun. Since my wallet is thin, I'm stuck with short range of a shotgun but in no way do I feel under gunned. Good video WTW, thanks for the info and the advice!

    338 Lapua is the logical choice. It is a sniper and hunting cartridge with mile range. Puts a 250gr bullets 3000 fps off the muzzle. It is a tactical rifle proven in combat. It is the sniper caliber of the British Army. The cost for a quality 338 Lapua rifle from Savage is in the low $1000.00 range instead of the 5k to 10k dollar range for a quality 50 BMG.

    I actually on the M 99 and a savage be a stealth. You were correct, 50 BMG is actually cheaper than the .338 Lappula. My latest beats them both, a 416 Rigby. Eight dollars/$12 per round. Crazy. Thanks for the great videos.

    Who Tee Who.... Thanks for this awesome comparison video. Like you had stated, the decision on which one to get should be based on the intended purpose. The 50 BMG is very expensive, and is the way to go if you are looking at competing in the King of 2 Mile or any other ELR competition. So unless you plan in ELR, then I would suggest you go with the 338 Lapua. Overall cost of just the rifle will be lower depending if you are going to be happy with the basic stock for it, or go with a chassis rig. Next item to consider is ammo cost. Either caliber you are talking big bucks. So consider reloading. Upfront cost to obtain all your reloading equipment is another consideration. I have being looking into all the options, and associated cost and am very happy with my SAVAGE Axis 308.

    338 Lapua Magnum all day! AR 30.. depending if you want accuracy or not?

    I'll pass on the 50 , the Lapua , eh...ok. but like u say , I'll go with my 300 win mag , easier to get the ammo , definitely cheaper then either of those. But if I do get the chance , I found a Lapua I do want.

    About 13 years ago a guy I use to work with bought a 50bmg rifle. I could of sworn he was paying $10 a round for 50bmg ammo back then. It’s nice to see the price for the ammunition has come down.

    • @abbuckley
      @abbuckley 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Paul Stan - it would cost about $2 if you reload. The price is closer to $3.50 - $6.00 a round.

    That 50 bmg would be great if you were hunting trucks. There's nothing like trying to carry a 35 pound rifle around in the mountains. We have a minimum caliber in my state but I know of no maximum caliber. Why not just get an M1A1 and the 120 mm smooth bore to hunt with. Don't even have to leave home to lob a couple rounds into a heard from several miles away and it will be tenderized already.

    who wanna buy a gun you should know the range you will be shooting the average range of your target aka the game big or small also and 1000 yrds is just for fun in the woods no on should be able or hunt a deer ... or anything like this for that range so stay with a .308 or something close and you will be fine don't spend your money guys for nothing because 5 dollars for a bullit for the size the of the .338 that is stealing from the factory they are thieves they should sell the bullets for how much it cost to produce and put a little bit more of profit on it and i'm sure the .338 don't cost as the half of the .50bmg so yeah stay with smaller cal.

    • @cardiffpicker1
      @cardiffpicker1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That isng how business works,they may not cost a great deal more in materials than something like a .308 but the amount sold is far far less,all the tooling and set up has to be paid for orbit is not financially viable to produce it.
      It's like with medication ,the first pill costs tens of millions to produce and all the others cost a penny,that first pill still needs to be paid for.

  • @ebozovsky

    have you done a comparison of 338 vs 300 win mag. I ended up with a 300 win mag purely due to cost of rounds. I can reload 300 win mag for around 60-70 cents and the 338 was 2-3$ reloaded,. yet along for the orginal $5 for the new rounds. I would also like to know how you far with 338 compared to 300 win mag as far as accuracy at 1000 meters.

      "Affordable" is relative to the person. Also as for hunting rifle ammo, Affordability is not that much of an issue. Get it sighted in, get comfortable with it and then a box or 2 of ammo per year is not a big deal.

    I bought the 338 Lapua because no place would allow a 50 BMG, another reason is the 338 is a more accurate round after all the 50 BMG round was made for machine guns Browning Machine Gun I love my 338 dont love the price of the ammo.

    I have a 30-30,30-06,5.56x45 nato,and last but not least my latest is my 6.5 grendel upper from BCA.( if anyone is interested I love my BCA upper )
    Edit : I’d go with the 338 even though my 30-06 can take down pretty much any big game animal in North America from a buck to a bear or even a moose if I make my own hand loads with 200 grain bullets and some slow burning powder)
