Body shop owner & painter for 26 years here
    1. There is nothing wrong with good quality body filler. It will outlast the owner if applied to spec
Some McLarens come with body filler from factory to smooth out the carbon before paint.
    2. Clear coat is dry to the touch in about 2 -4 hrs, ready to cut and polish the next day (if need be) but fully cured and shrank in a couple of months
So, he messed up the catalyst mix on the clear. (Likely Distracted).
    3. He said he spent 4 hrs cleaning the booth is bull sh*t. He didn't, he just rushed it.
My opinion is this dude flat out took advantage of you.
There's no excuse for charging 20k and putting out a dirty, unfinished paint job.
His shop name should definitely be outhere
    Shameful.

I will come out and address this as I’ve seen a handful of negative comments saying the painter is not at fault. I personally had a similar experience with this SAME exact painter/shop as to what Ryan just experienced…. Same guy….. Ironically enough my experience happened last year for also a SEMA car I built and revealed at the Toyo Booth.
My situation ended with the painter more than doubling the total cost, going back on what was agreed upon, and threatened to hold the car until that was paid. (Went with cops and paid the AGREED amount and took the car which still wasn’t finished either from unpainted areas, work still needing to be done).
Besides the point, this painter should not be trusted and to those saying otherwise, you’re more than welcome to go give him your money, he will willingly take it and give poor quality work OR try to give you the run around taking more than what was agreed upon.

As a someone once in the autobody world and who has painted a couple cars, if the paint came out soft and still soft after a couple days heck even weeks, no amount of baking will cure the paint. That most certainly has to do with the mixture. Probably that "Painter" didn't add enough hardener to the mixture which is wild to me.
Regarding "Bondo" there is this notion that it is the devil or some taboo ness with it. Body Filler/glaze is used from collision repair all the way to cars competing in the Riddler. Certainly you want the technician to get the metal as straight as possible and then add that last skim of glaze to get that panel laser straight.
Now you mentioned you paid $10K for the job but the question most importantly is what materials were being used on the car. For example, One company Axalta formerly Dupont has several tears of paint. The economy line Nason all the way up to Spies Hecker which is used on Super cars and high end luxury. Last thing you want is a car sprayed with a cheap economy clear and 5 years down the road the clear fails and starts peeling. A honest painter will keep it 100% with you and show you the materials being used. Good materials are super expensive.
Regarding the rough spots felt by the paint correction guy, that definitely sounds like he sprayed it in a garage with little to no ventilation or worse he panel painted the car because he didn't have a big enough compressor and just try to make it work in hopes you won't know.
I don't know much else nor do I care, but if you spent $10K and super high end materials were used (highly unlikely) that would of been a good deal for you. Seems like this guy wasn't all that honest because no one should charge $1100 to DA a bumper lol unless it's this ultra rare 1 of 1 that is in need of a serious repairs/restoration. Right from the jump I tell the customer buy a new OEM/Aftermarket bumper I am going to scuff it, adhesion promoter and it's ready for paint.
I don't know what's the deal with those "low points and high points" you were mentioning but that sounds more like the body work and you can't block the clear straighter. I also blocked cars down to a glass finish and I just can't role the dice on this one. Yes you might have sanded the top layer where it was soft, but you are still at a very high risk of failure later down the road. Paint correction guys are not painters. That's not his scope.
Please feel free to get the paint brand/line used and contact one of the chemists from the company, they will confirm this with you.
Btw, older Ferrari's until 2000's used BASF Glasurit, German paint which is superior and now used in Porsche, BMW, Mercedes, Audi today.
Lamborghini and Ferrari now have a contract with PPG. PPG is okay. Their Deltron line is a pain in the ass to work with. In my opinion, BASF RM/Glasurit is the best.

If I had a business dealing with someone high profile I would obviously take ultra special care to make sure that everything was 1000% right because I wouldn’t want my name and brand to be messed with by the thousands of people that you have reach and sway with. That’s not to say I would only go the extra mile for high profile clients but it is worth remembering that those clients can destroy businesses with something as simple as a bad review/post on socials or TH-cam.

I'll be K-swapping my S2k soon (using your wiring of course), but I'll be painting it first. I've spent the last year worrying about where it's gonna be done. I know of several shops that I've had repairs done at that do a great job, but none want to do a full repaint. I think I've found the place though..My initial quote, including welding on two new OEM quarter panels, was $11K. Bringing it down to the bare metal first is another couple thousand. .I'll stop by before I bring it in.

I can feel your frustration. There are very few things that I cannot do on my cars myself, paint being one of them. Sucks that you ended up working with someone who was more interested in taking your money than doing a good job. I'm glad that your detailer is able to bring the car to a presentable state. Situations like this are almost unavoidable. Keep your head up!
If this car was meant to be a keeper, and if the paint doesn't harden up by the end of the show, I'd consider pulling it apart again and having it done over. Maybe see if you can find a way to save money by trading services. Or consider getting another shell and building another one for yourself.

It is what it is. Sometimes you need to go through stuff like this to truly gain experience and wisdom. It's easy for others to criticize and say you should have done this, or that, or the other thing. When you're trying to figure something out for the first time, you hear so many differing opinions and all sorts of conflicting advice it can be hard to separate the wheat from the chaff. If you don't have someone you can trust with experience in said subject, there is no way to know who's advice to give the most weight to. The only TRUE way to find out, is to f*ck around! Unfortunately, this can lead to costly lessons. Fortunately, these tend to be the lessons you gain the most insight from. I bet going forward, you'll have a lot more confidence behind your decisions because now you'll have first-hand concrete experience why you are making them (as opposed to just second-hand theory). Great work. You're fighting the good fight. Live and learn, brother. Can't wait to see it when it's done.

In my point of view did Ryan get scammed? Hell yes. First in for most it is very difficult to find a good paint shop. Recommendation can go so far. For a paint job worth 15k plus and it’s a solid white was high way robbery. White is the cheapest color so even a gallon of water borne paint (ehp, 100line or cromax) is no more than 800-900 as a walk in. I had to look through social media found the shop using valspar. Even clear coat was cheap, in which the painter either didn’t use enough activator or he added a shit load of coats at once.
Luckly his paint correction guy was able to salvage the paint but in reality the car should have repainted. I’m sure that clear is still soft and will probably never harden.
Take it as an experience, and browse around different shops in the future.

In my experience its tough to navigate the paint/restoration process because their are almost always unforeseen conditions that have to be dealt with and fixing the unforeseens not only cost money but also time. With this being the case, you need to have some fluff built into your time schedule because asking them to fix a bunch of unforseens and restore additional pieces beyond the original scope of work without giving them any extra time to complete these tasks is also not really fair. I'm not saying they should be let off the hook on the quality work that they put out but there has to be some amount of give and take. Expecting a car to be "perfect" with super tight timeframes is not very realistic in my opinion. You should thoroughly vet the shop and then trust the process understanding that its likely going to take longer than originally anticipated. For $19,000 I wouldn't have let them off the hook on executing the color sanding and buffing part of what was agreed upon being a show quality paint job. I would have either held their feet to the fire on that or backed that out of their compensation based on your estimates to have it paint corrected. And if they didn't like that, then they should have executed it themselves. Its really tough to come behind someone as a detailer and try to fix some else's mistakes not really knowing what's been done to the car paint wise.

Ryan, as a Porsche shop owner I'm sorry to hear this happened. It's a great example of how even if you are well known in the space anything can happen. As for all the other silly comments in here, most people do not understand what it takes and the money it cost for a truly world class paint job. No you cannot spend a few hundred or even a few thousand... Think about it kids... Good material on its own can easily cost $5k.... How does your $6k total paint job make the painter any profit? It's because you don't have anything close to a world level paint job. And no, your 4/10 paint job is not a world class paint job. A quality Italian down draft booth can cost $250k. No shop that has high end equipment will charge less than $20k to do top level work. That being said, sounds horrible this happened to you. You didn't mention anything about his equipment and what materials he was using. I tend to ask these questions to help determine how legit they are along with getting with several friends in the industry. Sad to hear it won't be at Toyo. I'm not even a "body" guy, but as soon as I heard this guy say, "I don't want bondo" tells me this guy has no clue of how body filler works and the whole body shop processes for that matter. All "Sema" quality cars have body filler, how it's worked is what separates it from backyard job or "show" quality work.

I know they do a lot of insurance stuff and that can be a bad mindset to have in a painter if you need perfection. Just get it in and out ain’t good all the time. I’m surprised because they probably knew who you are. Maybe not I just know they always got Hondas there.

Going down this rabbit hole for a bit. Looking at ulysses ig he definitely charged you by the word haha. He spends probably 50 percent of his time yapping to his coworkers.
After seeing him aircraft strip the bumper. Not a big deal but to use a metal putty knife on a plastic bumper knowing full well you didnt want any bondo on the car is just careless 😂
