    This is child acting at its finest. Just immature enough to be realistic but they are all memorable enough to be seared into our collective memories and psyche. It’s a movie that’s very rewatchable. Great movie!!

    Piece of trivia: Sean Astin had the original map that they used in the movie. A few years later, Sean's mom, Patty Duke, was doing a major house cleaning, came across the map in Sean's room, and threw it out thinking it was just some junk they didn't want or need anymore. Lost forever, probably in a landfill somewhere.

    I loved this movie as a kid, and showed it to my niece a few years ago, excited to see her reaction. Not surprisingly, she was underwhelmed. I think this movie speaks to those of us who saw it as kids because we can so easily relate to it. Reading magazines, finding gems in old stories and tales, hanging out with friends in the woods or attics/cellars and whatnot. Kids today don't interact with each other directly outside of school. They interact through proxy ala cell phones. The movies that will give them the 'feels' in the future will be movies that also engage them by proxy, namely cgi movies like cars, or monsters. Which are also one step removed by not even being centered around kids but around inanimate objects or creatures. Not saying one is better or worse, just that it was a shock to realize how different their experiences will shape their tastes in the future.

    • @gutz1981

      +Chevron Lowery Its just proving more and more, our generation (The same as these kids in this movie) was probably the luckiest and better imaginary and had more social connections with one another and fun. And we were the ones that got the first and earliest taste of what would become the technology of today. Today's kids are just proving to be a disappointment and less socially connected and are more cruel and less amused due to social media and distancing themselves from physical connection.

    Me and my friends growing up actually went on this amazing adventure growing up in our home town. The town had a big history in Morgan’s Raiders during the Civil War and we found old 1960’s silver dollars with an old journal a soldier left behind. Although the money only amounted to about 150 bucks we still felt rich 😂

    I watched the film again for the first time in a long long time and I didn’t realise how good Chunks performance really was. He absolutely steals the film with his acting. The Goonies is *the perfect 1980's film*, for all time. It is inherently quotable. It possesses some kind of magic that somehow makes me happy every time I see it. This film managed to capture the sense of wonder that kids these days can no longer experience. Video games made kids retarded. Raise a glass if you were a kid when this came out and spent your childhood going on "adventures".

    • @tylerskiss
      @tylerskiss 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      you can definitely feel that Spielbergian magic even if he didn't direct it per se. I'm guessing, seeing as it was early on in his producing days, that he was on set more often than not and it wouldn't surprise me if someone revealed that, like Poltergeist, Spielberg had more of a hand in making the Goonies than we are led to believe.

    In 1987 there was a rerun of Goonies at the cinema near my house, I was 7 years old and I was scared by the poster. It was simply a black and white poster with the logo but the skull said to me "horror movie" so I waited for the next movie.
    I saw the movie on TV only in 2002, 15 years later.
    I was 22 years old and I was immediately scarred by the coolness of this movie and I bought the DVD the day after.
    I love your reviews, they are so professional and so magic, they are my favorite but I was surprised to hear that this movie is average if it hasn't the nostalgia for the childhood effect.
    Maybe for me it wasn't average because I love the '80s and because I'm a child trapped in an adult body?

  • @logicalreality2680

    This movie to me is the best movie ever made. And that’s because though I’m a mid 90s baby, I had “Goonie” adventures and they’ll always be remembered. It’s a story of a group of friends who are all threatened and on the verge of losing their homes. Now I’m not here to say this movie isn’t without flaws. But this movie is perfect to me it shows the deep bonds we who grew up like that formed with our friends. It’s such a gem. Friends who love each other and their home and refuse to let it be taken from them. And of course you have your supporting cast. Which were amazing! Martha Plimpton, Josh Brolin, and can’t think of the others at the moment lol. But being a Goonie is beyond just being a group of kids, it’s standing up for what you love and believe in. This movie won’t resonate with the new generations unfortunately but this movie will always have a spot in my heart. This was an extremely crude review lol but I’m currently watching it and can’t take any longer on this lol, gotta watch my Goonies!

    I totally agree with you - watching this movie again is like time-travelling. There's so much in it that ties it to the era. I remember seeing an ad for it in the comic 'Buster' (remember that?) but didn't see it until it came out on video a year or so later. I don't really know why this film is so powerfully nostalgic when compared to lots of other childhood favourites, but it does seem to be for many people. Another film I loved from that era is Explorers (review please!) It's imperfect, and not as well-rounded a movie as Goonies, but the first half of the film is sensational. When watching these movies together it really does seem like they don't make 'em like they used to!

What is strange to me is that scene that was cut out with the Octopus with Data. When I was a kid in the early 1990's and this was being shown on television in syndication, they actually didn't cut that scene out. But in later syndicated showings they had it removed. It wasn't until I saw the DVD release years later that I found out it was supposedly a deleted scene.

    One thing I will say about certain kid/young adult films of the eighties, and Goonies is a particularly good example of this, is that they might be imperfect but their scope is so vast. They don't allow limitations to get in the way of story telling or style as so many movies do now. Having said that more recent films like Wall-E and Up I think do have that timeless quality to them also.

    As someone who has worker on set multiple times I can attest to the fact that it is incredibly difficult to find good child actors. I've seen productions stop, because the kids weren't pulling their weight, or were acting unprofessionally. Happens when they are in a group especially, because they will tend to socialize with eachother, apart from the rest of the crew, and that will affect the emotional tone of the scenes. You'll be shooting something dramatic, and kids were just telling jokes to eachother, so they're practically giggling. With kid actors there isn't much previous record to go by. They don't have decades-long resumes. You're essentially rolling the dice on every new kid you hire, but the moment someone stumbles upon gold, the child actor balloons in popularity. Everyone wants an actor with a proven record that won't upset studio schedules.

    The score of the Goonies was done by Jazz Pianist Dave Grusin. Grusin did themes on TV in shows like Good Times, Maude, St. Elsewhere and One Life to Live. a year after the Goonies, Dave Grusin made his fully electronic score for Lucas along with his brother Don.

    I loved this film as a kid and still love it to this day, I showed it to my kids when they were younger and they loved it as well.
    The bonkers traps never bothered me as a kid and still don't now that I'm a lot older, this is the kind of adventure I'd go on with my friends when I was that age, the only difference is that we would be making everything up :)

    A sequel wouldn't be difficult at all to do. You'd bring back the original cast, sure, except now they would have to have kids of their own! Their kids set off on their own Goonie adventure, and the parents have to go after them and join in! See, easy!

    • @DNAidan
      @DNAidan 9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Yes, but does anyone really want to see a Goonies 2? It wouldn't add anything, and It would be depressing to see the Original cast all grown up.

    • @JesseWolfboy
      @JesseWolfboy 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Well, that's just like uh, your opinion, man. Myself and millions of other people around the world DO want to see Goonies 2. It only wouldn't add anything if it's badly done, and it wouldn't be depressing to see some of the actors return, especially if it's in a big, GOOD movie. Add a couple hot new YOUNG stars to play their kids… It could work. Don't be so pessimistic! :)

    • @DNAidan
      @DNAidan 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Double- Jay I'm not being pessimistic, I just don't want too see a fun kids film turned into a film about their kids.

    Nice review. Richard Donner began his career directing a Goonies like tv serial called Danger Island. Which starred a very young Jan Michael Vincent. These were shown in short episodes on the Banana Splits Cartoon Show. I’m sure both are viewable on TH-cam.

    Excellent retro review once again Olly .
    This is one of those films that i saw at a time when i was slightly older than the demographic i'm assuming they were trying to appeal to but i still loved it, it's something that makes you feel like a kid while watching it because it celebrates how silly and wondrous that brief time in your life can be .

    It was only a matter of time before you reviewed this film, it was a 'must do' for a retrospective. The movie is iconic, I loved it as a kid but I'm not sure if I could re-watch it these days, maybe if it was on tv .. maybe lol.
    It's always cool to see what movie you'll do next, I'd love to see you review either Maximum Overdrive or They Live both great 80's movies that'd fit in well with your series :)

    For anyone interested the UK PG version removed most of the fake hanging in the jail cell, Chunk cursing when he spills his shake, him cursing again at Mikey’s mother and Mouth’s references to drugs and torture devices in Spanish were toned down in the subtitles. A further tweak was made to the video to remove an apparent f-bomb.

    Seen this Movie yesterday for the first time (i'm 35 now) and it was SO MUCH FUN!
    Yes - in the beginning i noticed it too with the overlapping action when they are all together...there was very much going on there - but the whole opening really showed good how everyone is a unique - and on there own - lovable character!
    What the movie does for me, even if it sounds a bit smaltsy, it was like - feeling like a little kid again. With all these Adventurous thoughts etc. this Movie really got some magic vibes!
    About these criminals...wouldn't wonder me, if that is, what they took as inspiration for the Naked Gun 33 1/3 movie-criminals :D

    "California Man?" It was called "Encino Man" in the states. Encino is a town out side of LA and I guess they figures British people wouldn't know that. But I don't think most people here knew what Encino was either.

    I remember, for some weird reason, being afraid of Goonies when I first saw it in theaters (I was 3) only began to enjoy it when I hit my 20s. I also read that Goonies was HUGE in Japan, which is where the movie apparently made most of its money. My favorite was also Data but also Brand and Stef.
