If they do end up making a Gremlins 3, they should go the approach that Mad Max: Fury Road and Star Wars: The Force Awakens went.
Use CG only when it's needed and work hard on the practical effects.

I'd have to agree on Force Awakens. I admire their use of practical effects but the story was like a fan-fic rip off of New Hope. Yet people lapped it up. At least the prequels did something different.

Hey, don't be talkin' crap about Pheobe Cate's father-chimmney story. You see I understand the pain she went through.....it was on President's day 2007 and my father was supposed to come down the chimmeny dressed like Abraham Lincoln with a sack full of copies of the declaration of independence for me and my sisters but he never showed. We worried for weeks, not eating, having trouble concentrating on the simplest of tasks. We filed a missing persons report. The police looked for days. They didn't find anything. As the months went by my mother and I noticed a strange smell coming from the fireplace. We never thought anyting of it. Turns out it was a dead mouse and my father ran off with a hooker dressed like Martha Washington........what you think he died in the chimney?!? That only happens in movies!!! Felt really bad for the mouse though.....

    1. Short Circuit (1986)
    2. The Breakfast Club (1985)
    3. The Secret of NIMH (1982)

    10. An American Tale (1986)

    • @dschesters
      @dschesters 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Not really, Gremlins 2 was 1990, so you can't say if was following a trend and whilst not as dark as its predecessor it was played more as a satirical commentary of making crap sequels, its worth noting that the studio asked Dante to return to shoot the sequel but he only agreed if he could do what he wanted, hence the satirical tone.

    • @gannicus8101

4:22 - In the States, Gremlins was given the then new PG-13 certificate. In the United Kingdom, it was a 15 in the cinema and on VHS/home video. It has since been re-classified down to a 12A. A fascinating doc. from the BBFC here shows the board censor's notes and how a PG would have 'necessitated cutting Gremlins to ribbons. www.bbfc.co.uk/sites/default/files/attachments/Gremlins.pdf

  • @theproplady

This film always seemed to me like somebody's f*** you to Christmas--all that fake, prepackaged holiday cheer. They only way they could make their message any clearer is if they flashed the words "Commercialism Sucks!" on the screen all the way through the movie. You could also look at it as a "Man vs. Nature" flick. With the gremlins representing what happens when you don't treat nature with the care it deserves.
I liked the appearance of the original Time Machine at the Inventor's convention. (Especially since you see it actually vanish in the background in a "blink and you'll miss it" moment.)

I like this film, but for some reason I enjoyed watching the sequel more. The pure insanity of what goes on in Gremlins 2 just made it more entertaining to watch IMO. I still laugh at the bit towards the end when all the gremlins are getting doused with the fire hose and one of them has a bath cap on and sings "I'm singing in the bathtub." And I absolutely love the NES game of Gremlins 2. Tight controls, excellent soundtrack, and just difficult enough to be challenging but beatable with practice and patience. Definitely one of the better movie based games out there.

I remember watching Gremlins on the Disney Channel back in the mid-90s and seeing the scene of Gerrard when he'd locked himself in the vault. It always puzzled me because I never remembered seeing that scene before and I never saw it again until the film was released on DVD. I wonder why they added that scene back in for its television airing when they're always removing scenes for time and censorship.

When they edit things out (probably Stripe dying, the microwave explodey and various other things that aren't Disney enough) they splice in additional footage so it fits within their desired runtime. They did the same thing with a lot of films edited for broadcast.

You're probably right. Back then especially, Disney was always trying to maintain a kid-friendly face. Things have certainly loosened up a bit for them. I remember when The Nightmare Before Christmas was first released, Disney released it under Touchstone Pictures, probably thinking it was too intense for small children. Nowadays, it's been rebranded and Disney is slapped all over anything related to TNBC.

Raine Phoenix 'Halloween' (1978) and 'Halloween II' (1981) actually have television versions, where more violent footage is replaced with alternate or extended scenes elsewhere in the films, as TigerNightmare suggested.

I didn't see the August 85 re-release of Gremlins, though I did see the original showing (US). However, I did see E.T. for the 2nd time that same month. I had to opt for that or something else because I was too young to get into Return Of The Living Dead (dammit). I have all 3 of those movies to this day, and I still love E.T., but I wanted to see that damn ROTLD bad.

Hey Oliver, I'm sure you're aware that the dialogue by Dick Miller 8:54 about 'Gremlins' attacking planes and such during wartime was a Roald Dahl concept then developed by Walt Disney into an animated film that never happened.

I noticed that you described Mrs. Deagle as, " basically Scrooge", I think she's more of an homage to Mr. Potter from It's A Wonderful Life.
The film follows that scene with Billy's mom watching It's A Wonderful Life on TV, while cutting onions in the kitchen.

What always confused me about "Gremlins" was one of those rules; "DON'T GET THEM WET". Natch', we all discover that they multiply once any liquid touches their body. If that's a fact, then why did Stripe have to get to the swimming pool in order to do this. I mean, he's running through the "WET" snow. That should have done the trick. As a matter of fact, with all that snow, blanketing the ground, these creatures should have not been able to be killed off at all. Especially if they all took turns rolling around in the snow.Oh well. Still a great and memorable movie. Thanks for the fine review.

Congratulations Oliver for reviewing one of the coolest classic of the 80's. Now, please if you have some time consider to make one retrospective in "Matinee". I really love this movie which make fun of the many of those "cult" sci fi of the fifties. Here in Chile was never release in theaters and VHS (for some problem with the copyrights) so the first time I could saw it was in TV (dubbed and cut and trust me, here in South America they really make awful, but awful work).

This movie and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984) are credited with inspiring the MPAA to create the PG-13 rating. Many felt the movies were too violent for a PG rating, but not violent enough for an R.
In Cantonese, "mogwai" means "devil," "demon," or "gremlin." The Mandarin pronunciation is "mogui."
Director Joe Dante prefers Gremlins 2: The New Batch (1990) to this movie
The Mogwai were molded and inspired from the Japanese Chin dog breed.
The term "gremlin" is a neologism originally coined by English author Roald Dahl, famous for his somewhat dark children's books. His story, "Gremlin Lore", about fictitious mischievous elves that were said to cause unexplained damage on Royal Air Force planes was commissioned by Walt Disney, but was never made
The coloring of Gizmo, including the white patch of fur around the right eye, was directly modeled after one of Steven Spielberg's dogs.

Maybe it's because I grew up on this movie, but there's just something so damn fleshed out about Gremlins. It's basically 'My First Horror Movie' but as a result it lacks so many of the same apathy problems as 'adult' horror movies. Not everyone is a quick victim to the monster or is too stupid to be likeable. There's an absurd amount of charming human characters introduced in this movie, even if they only appear in brief roles (they seemed to bring the Futtermans back for 2 just to give them a fairer chance). The whimsicality of this movie, even through the comical Gremlins, if anything makes it so distinct and memorable (likely why 2 upped it to eleven).
I think the handling of the Peltzer family with Gizmo is done really well with careful nuance in the final revision, making Gizmo a 'white sheep' that never turns into an evil Gremlin and Billy for the large part a sympathetic protagonist that genuinely IS trying to follow the rules, just he keeps getting caught out by outside forces or the Mogwai/Gremlins outsmarting him. Even Rand kinda feels balanced carefully on the likeability scale despite starting the whole mess, since the grandkid basically shoves Gizmo into his hands, and he arguably does a more earnest job explaining the rules than the kid does. The mother is rewritten from just another gory victim of the Gremlins to a badass who drives off the first batch, and even the dog is adorably expressive.
All this adds subtlety to the message, that humans just don't take good care off all of life's wonders. Some do TRY though, and Gizmo is rooting for them.
