The New DEWALT FlexVolt 60V Brushless 7-1/4" Circular Saw DCS578 has up to 47% more power than its predecessor the DCS575 in use with a 6.0Ah DCB606 battery. The new saw achieves over 2456 UWO and has a no-load speed of 5,800 RPM. Many of the other specifications match the predecessor such as a max depth of cut at 90 degrees of 2-9/16", a max depth of cut at 45 degrees of 2", and a maximum bevel angle of 57 degrees with detents at 22.5 and 45 degrees. As far as blade right circular saws go, this is one of the top performers.
DEWALT upgraded three tools that were part of the original DEWALT FlexVolt System that debuted in 2016. The upgraded tools are FlexVolt 7-1/4 IN. Circular Saw DCS578, FlexVolt 4-1/2 - 6 IN. Grinder DCG418, and FlexVolt Reciprocating Saw DCS389.
The upgrades to these three tools mean that the Circular Saw DCS578 is up to 47% more powerful, the Grinder DCG418 is up to 30% more powerful, and the Reciprocating Saw DCS389 is up to 19% more powerful than their predecessors. This was achieved with new software, motor, and hardware upgrades.
UPGRADE DISCLAIMER
First, it is important to know that the FlexVolt battery is not exactly 60-volts. Maximum initial battery voltage (measured without a workload) is 60 volts. The nominal voltage is 54. This type of measurement applies to many different brands, not just DEWALT.
Next, the DEWALT DCS578 FlexVolt 7-1/4 IN. Circular Saw with a DCB609 9.0 Ah 60V FlexVolt battery has up to 47% more power vs. DEWALT DCS575 in use with a 6.0Ah DCB606 battery. Some of the increase in power is because the DCB609 9.0 Ah battery has 21700 cells where the DCB606 6.0 Ah battery has 18650 cells. The 21700 cells can produce and hold more amps than the 18650 cells.
DEWALT Vs Milwaukee Saws
Every tool manufacturer has tools they excel at building better than other brands. DEWALT is setting the bar when it comes to circular saws without a doubt. This might have a lot to do with the FlexVolt battery because even the Power Detect 20-volt circular saw is nothing compared to the new FlexVolt Circular Saw. Milwaukee has a great M18 FUEL circular saw if you are cross-cutting 2x lumber or ripping thin sheet goods. When you start making full depth cuts, the lower voltage circular saws tested in this video just a not happy.
I feel I made an error using the Milwaukee 8.0 Ah High Output battery with the tool trying to match the tool up with the DEWALT Power Detect Circular Saw. I came to my senses finally and used the 12 Ah battery to try to stop the cutouts. Even with the larger battery, there was still no chance the Milwaukee M18 FUEL saw was going to keep up with the DEWALT FlexVolt Circular Saw!

I should have used the Milwaukee M18 12ah battery through the full testing, not just in the last half. The 12 Ah battery did not seem to give more speed, but it did stop the stalls. Sorry for my error. I do not believe it would have changed any of the results of where each saw stands.
No , not really , because the Power Detect had a 8.0ah , and the FlexVolt actually had a 3.0ah .
Milwaukee said that you can use the saw with all milwaukee batterie so its not an error

Steven Gagnon no doubt the new flexvolt got more power I just find it very biased to use a smaller battery in a saw that comes with 12.0.
The Milwaukee and Dewalt 20v are about the same power but the flexvolt is in another league

True i only have 2 flexvolt batterys and man it kills the batterys quick just bought the 20v 7 1/4 its alright not as strong but i do have allot of regular 20v batteries

I have the older Milwaukee 2630-20. It's brushed, but it does only ok. Gets me by. When I put a 9 or 12 in it.. .it really comes to life. Milwaukee has some work to do!
And the Milwaukee got it on the 3rd try in the full depth rip cut.. neither DeWalt saw had a problem. Go DeWalt!
The nice thing about the dewalt flexvolt stuff is that not only is it absurdly powerful, but it stops up if it detects a bind. Grinder and circular saw have kept me productive and safe at work.

Team Red fan and Dewalt has always made a better saw. Kudos to them yet again. I am in the blade right camp. Still use my 6 1/2 M18 and it satisfies my needs. I cut slow so I don't waste material. I also have enough battery platforms already. Great review!!
I wanted the new flexvolt saw but got the milwaukee in sale for $154 and cannot complain. Im not a PRO or work in that field. I am more of a DIY and this saw is way more than what i needed.

I have the Makita X2 rear-handle saw and it works well, but I really like how that FlexVolt throws the sawdust out to the side. My Makita track saw has a dust port that works pretty well but the blade is on the wrong side!

I have the flexvolt and no joke it beats my corded saw. I thought the power detect would have been a close second and was really surprised. I never would have thought Milwaukee would heat up like that. Great review!
honestly, have to remember: the flexvolt is in its own class cause it is 60v max compare to 20/18v. So the flexvolt should be the most powerful as it is getting more amps and watts at a huge difference in voltage. I would say for the best 18 volt powerful saw, the milwaukee is where it is at WITH the 12 ah battery. But if you want the most powerful saw, no doubt the flexvolt is where it is at.

I cut a fir 2x12 x12ft. lengthwise into 3 2x4s with no problems with my DeWalt 6 1/2 " 20V. The battery will no longer charge as it is now 6 yrs old. Cheers again from Western Canada.
Please use the same blades when testing saws so it will keep everybody even in that aspect. That's my only suggestion. With that being said I like how you do you text and vs videos. 👌🏻
you just sold me a corded saw, thank you for the demo! I've got a 35 year old craftsman 2 -1/8 hp corded, runs great, but I do want to upgrade, but will not be a battery version at this time. the flex volt would have been ok but don't need to spend all that money

Mate you honestly would be far more blown away by just how good these dewalt saws really are, I don’t even have the new upgraded model of the flex volt saw yet the one I have has far more power than a corded saw.
Only down side I would say for you is if you have had a saw for 35 years then no disrespect or anything but you may find them too heavy especially being the latest ones have to have a 9 amp battery where as my model can use the 6amp. My old man wouldn’t use them because he hated the weight but they are unbelievable!

I just got the 578 with the 9 amp battery. I'm pretty excited and can't wait for a big framing job. The bare tool was $200 and the kit was $300, that's a no brainer. Also got the 999 drill kit so I have two big batteries and chargers. Home Depot just sent me six months no interest on my credit card so I went for it.

I agree with you, can't wait to see new left side blade circular saw. I hope they make this style then the rear handle. Don't get me wrong the rear handle might work good for certain Carpenters but it's too bulky and really it's not a worm drive.

Now watching this video makes me feel like taking a trip to take it back so i can get the flex volt. but my lowes didnt have anything flex volt while i was there, not even batteries

Great comparison. I always felt DeWalts circular saws were superior to Milwaukee. However Milwaukee has the much better recipe saw.

When you put it next to the FlexVolt, in these situations, it did not look so great. The wood I used in the PD test was new and typical framing lumber. The lumber in this test was all 7 years old. I do not know if that makes a difference, but either way, the FV was a beast.

Absolutely love mine. I do a lot of demo and take away a lot of the new construction fences out of plywood by my self so i carry this baby to cut them so its less strain on my back. Point being i can load a 15ft truck using this saw and the battery almost last me all day if i dont hit nails and such. I am sure its better with a wood only blade. This thing pays for its self many many times over.

got the milwuakee fuel 7-1/4" its a couple years old not sure the model number, it works good i only have 9.0s no 12s yet, i do notice the grip where you hold gets pretty warm and the saw starts stalling really easy must be where the mosfets are located.. this test i noticed the dewalt xr would almost bog out without a cutout and the milwuakee would barely drop rpms and stall.. my 5" fuel grinder tends to stall easy too after its warmed up, i push it pretty hard though and am happy with it, theyre a little conservative on the stall out parameters in the computer of it all warranty reasons i guess
Good info on the Milwaukee. I love their corded tools but everyone I know that pushes their battery Milwaukee has problems but the ones that don’t use as aggressively love them. I have the Flexvolt 575 and it is a beast ,I personally don't think they needed to upgrade it to 2400watts as in the 578 as I wonder if it will just eat up batteries faster? I am a builder and carpenter and really like my 575 ,it does full depth rips at lightning speed ,this the true test of power. Thanks for the test.
IMHO, I think that the new motor and software was able to find more power but also include some efficiency.
Great video! I've had the Milwaukee 8.0 ah battery overheat under heavy use. I'm thinking the 12.0 does better but i don't own one. The 8.0 heat synching is not good. I really wonder if the 12.0 is better for overheating with the extra row of cells and better heat dissipation. I wish someone would compare the 2 under heavy load to see if there is something better with the Milwaukee 12.
I can cut compound mitres with my flexvolt, I never thought I'd put my skill away. Its simply the best. And this is coming from someone who uses a saw everyday!
I like the magnesium base on the Milwaukee over the aluminum base although the aluminum base is more durable and won't crack when you drop it on concrete, but it looks nicer, but they have magnesium bases for both the flexvolt and 20v circ saws but they make them for Russia or Ukraine and parts of Europe and they have slots on the bottom that fit into tracks like a track saw which is pretty cool, but how come the USA doesn't get the better tools here, they had a Milwaukee 10 in miter saw way before we did and also they made a 81/2 and 10 in flexvolt 60v miter saws for Europe and Ukraine
And as far as the battery deal. That 8 amp on the Milwaukee should have been able to power jus as much as the 12. They’re both 21700 cell tech and the only difference should be runtime. Idk, I don’t see and issue running the 8 amp for the test at all. Great review as always Sir!!!
I did not see the difference either, at least when I started the testing. At the end I just wish I would have went for the best battery, even though I did not have the 12 Ah FV battery. I always try to be as fair as possible to give you guys the best info. I even stopped editing out a lot of stuff just to you can see the testing.
They have the same size cells but the 12.0 has an extra row of cells (3) giving it more power than the 8.0 (2)
I’m all about the Metabo HPT/Hikoki but I don’t think the Multivolt 7 1/4 could even keep pace with that Flexvolt. That thing is a monster!

That makes sense heat wise, current/amperage is heat and the highest amperage is coming from the Milwaukee, the flexy is 60v so it’s 1/3 the amperage, the dewalt xr can’t use as much amperage as the Milwaukee so I would expect its blade/motor to be warmest and Milwaukee’s battery to be warmest

Those 60v are a beast and I have all Milwaukee. But I have mostly automotive tools. I think circular saws can use those 60 volts better.

Good video as usual, but..... Well, you already said it yourself. I have no clue why you started this test with the Milwaukee 8ah battery. I respectfully disagree that the speed isn't affected only the cutouts with those batteries. I'll get to the reasons below. When this saw was released, you couldn't get it tool only. You HAD to get the 12ah kit. FOR A REASON! They had press releases explaining this very point. This saw(and the table saw) were designed around the 12ah battery. For those who don't get it, there are 50% more amps of available output with the 12ah than the 8ah. THAT IS A HUGE DIFFERENCE. To get 15amp 120v corded performance, the 18v battery needs to sustain 100 amps output. When you're plowing a rip at full depth and pushing it, you are far exceeding that. That's why they get hotter than the FlexVolt 54v mode(60v Max is marketing bs, the same tools and batteries sold in the UK are labeled 18v/54v) draws only 33.3 amps. Milwaukee had to jump some huge electrical engineering hurdles to keep the 18v platform relevant. Heavier wiring, circuitry, heat dissipation etc. Thus far they've done an amazing job in my opinion. It was a ballsy decision to stay with the M18 platform. But, I'm not sure how much more they can squeeze out of 18 volts. That said, for sheer power, I don't think you can beat the FlexVolt saw. There were a lot of pissed off Dewalt users when FlexVolt came out. But from an engineering and design standpoint it was/is/always will be much easier to get more performance by going with higher voltage. But with sharp blades and the right battery, you don't lose much performance with the Milwaukee for 99% of real world use. I'm not a fan of these right blade saws at all. I grew up on a Skill 77 and was thrilled when the rear handle left blade versions came out. Got mine the first day it was available. I'd get another 7 1/4 sidewinder if it was right blade though. Unless I'm doing heavy work, I still reach for the Fuel 6 1/2 left blade because it's so much lighter and compact. Exciting times for tool geeks. Everybody is pushing better and better tools out all the time. Competition in the market is a good thing for all of us. Keep up the great work.
I have the dcs574 with the 8amp battery I have been using it for fence work for the last two years and have had zero issues with it but I wouldn’t mind more power if possible.
The flexvolt is an absolute beast. #1 hands down.
I would love to see a video where you test the power of the Dewalt dwe575sb ( corded circular saw) there are really almost not videos of tha one on TH-cam and it would be awesome if you get to drop a test between Dewalt DWE575sb and Dewalt DCS573.

I use the flex volt and the Milwaukee and like both of them but the flex volt is a cordless beast cutting 2x’s and 4x’s
Same is true now as it was 4 yrs ago, no cordless saw can compare to the flexvolt 575 circ saw...especially the rear handle 577..you can hear it,feel it, see it. For any diy user, any 18v circ saw will do. But for framing, remodeling or construction you have to use flexvolt 60v. ...plus we cut LVL, PSL, LSL engineered lumber all day, which is far more dense then any of that material.
Larger ah batteries help ,but it’s the saw, the motor, the engineering that does it. Makita is second best in this category, their cordless circ saw and rear handle are both excellent saws, closer to flexvolt power. Milwaukee is for professional plumbers,hvac and mechanics, or use the Milwaukee carpentry tools if your diy, not pro.
Same with Dewalt 20v saws, they are DIY tools.

Great Video , it's my 3rd time watching it . I have a QUESTION about the run time between the FlexVolt 9.0ah and the 20v 8.0ah because its important to me , do you think that the FlexVolt saw with a 6.0ah or 9.0 ah would last through a whole day of cutting or is the 20v 8.0ah going to last a lot longer with the Power Detect ? I'm only cutting sheet goods and some 2x's I really dont need a ton of power , I need run time , Thanks....👍🛠🖖
With light sheet goods, both will cut all day.

Right now at my local home depot they have that new flex volt the 9 ah battery, a 2 ah regular battery and a drill with case for $299 I was shocked and bought both kits. Come to find out it was a listing mistake and I got the deal of the century. I bought the power detect a few days earlier and returned it. The flex volt is a beautiful piece. Everything else I have is Milwaukee's newest stuff and it's been problematic. I spent a ton on it and am disappointed. The impact and drill gets so hot I can't use them a lot. The power is crazy though.
Flexvolt is a beast but as a hobbyist will stick with 20(18)V and look for Power Detect on any upgrades. But tbh honest, even 8ah is overkill for me, a couple of 5ah gets me through whatever I do, so if I see some non power detect bargains I'll still take a look 👍

This Friday you will see the Power Detect vs Flexvolt vs Milwaukee M18 Fuel. not the Milwaukee Super Sawzall as that is not comparable. Any orbital saw will beat the Dewalt saws in wood.

I did that on a full depth cut today quickly. Same exact results as the final test. The FV does not change much with the 9 or 12 Ah. Milwaukee performed the same as the last cut and the PD was the same as the first test.

How do you compare an old worn out saw to a new one. Hard to justify buying a new old model, but I will see what I can do.
Old flexvolt saw was 1800 watt motor. New one is 2400 watts, same as the blade left wormdrive style saw.
Forgive my ignorance but when it comes to blade left/right/rear, is that strictly preference or you need some for certain applications
Mostly preference, but there are specific jobs that each do better than others due to the blade placement.
For once in my life I am speechless. Y'all know I'm a team red guy however kudos to DeWalt for really for really bringing it to the table. That Milwaukee saw sounds like it is about to give up the ghost or maybe it's my phones speaker , however that flexvolt saw sounds really good...like it's rpm's are actually what they claim it to be and it holds the rpm's all of the way through the cut...some awesome torque no doubt. I would really like to know what the rpm's on ur Milwaukee are compared to that flexvolt. Please tell me if I am wrong , because from what I just watched that Milwaukee was just knocked down to playing JV and the flexvolt passed varsity and went straight to the pros.

Their cordless router, multitool and sanders and pushing me more and more to having a 2nd 18v tool platform, with Dewalt having more up to date brushless woodworking tools in general. I just bought the new 12v xtreme drill because it's so lightweight and compact and I love it as much as my m12 fuel.
I will never give up team red because, I love their 12v line especially, but next free battery promotion I find for Dewalt here in Canada, I think I'm going to grab myself a couple :)
@@ericmann1781 , you are so right about DeWalt having better cordless tools for wood working. I use Milwaukee for most of my work however I also use DeWalt for exactly that reason. At first I wasn't sure about running two platforms but it's not all that bad. There is no doubt that DeWalt has done there homework and came out swinging for the fences and making a solid statement that they have what it takes to make great tools. There is no doubt what so ever that the updated DeWalt flexvolt line is gonna be a force to reckon with....the 20v too. All this competition has been great for us...the peeps who use these tools to put food on the table and the kids through school.

About 10 years ago I bought a Milwaukee cordless kit with 5-6 tools in the kit for a great price. In the kit was a circular saw and it couldn’t cut anything without stalling out! It was so bad that eventually after a couple of times trying to use it, it made its way to the dumpster instead of taking up room. I know technology is a lot better now, but after that experience I will never trust or ever consider buying another Milwaukee wood tool again. Milwaukee tools have exceptional impact drill drivers and drills for wood and that’s about it. Milwaukee tools are for working on trucks, cars and heavy equipment, that’s where their tools shine. Milwaukee needs to get out of the carpentry/woodworking tool business. Better yet, Milwaukee should discontinue anything that has a round saw blade because they still don’t work good.

Mine works fine and I can't find any issues with power and performance. A brushed tool is at a significant disadvantage then a brushless tool, plus the HO batteries make a huge difference in performance. Is dewalt Flexvolt in its own league still? yes but the Fuel is close at 18V. Got to remember the voltage difference. My dad's dewalt 20v tools are basically similar to my fuel tools, but I like the Milwaukee for being smaller and more compact. To each is own.
They have a very good sawzall, and probably the best jam saw of all brands, whether the 18v or 12v. They have a good trim router, good nailers. I use the fuel 6.5" saw and it works good. Everyone where I live uses Milwaukee(and I live in the eye of the storm for this brand) Their work vans are all red inside. I recently switched to a different brand, and when I showed up with non-red tools, I got the suspicious eye. Some guys won't touch them. If I offer it, they'll kinda get a glazed look in their eyes and start searching the ground for the red tool instead.
So Milwaukee is huge in construction carpentry. They have automotive tools, electrician tools, plumber tools, etc, but their main stuff is all geared toward timber construction/vertical construction. They're overpriced a bit, and they're definitely not fine woodworking tools. You wouldn't use them in a cabinet shop or for making furniture, but they're generally good professional quality.

I don't own that flexvolt yet, but I think I can't tolerate not buying it with that 9ah 21700 cell pack. You can know that you have the best saw if you buy it out of all brands, including flex.
Very glad a choose the DeWalt Flexvolt rear handle over the Milwaukee. I'm huge into the M18 platform and this just proves how junk their saws are when not paired with a 12ah battery. Should you require a 12ah battery to run at optimal performance? I don't think it should matter as long as it's one of the bigger ho's. Just goes to show you VOLTAGE DOES MATTER!

My thoughts are same. Power detect will be realy close to the new flexvolt, but honestly the power difference a bit shock me.

I think we need to remember or not forget that these saws are still battery powered. This isn't a drill or an impact gun ! I am surprised at how well they all perform . A saw does a lot more than a drill does! Love your videos ! Keep them coming!
We all know that heat kills battery cells or at the very least lowers their lifespan. The higher the voltage typically there is less heat produced. I'm slowly moving away from Milwaukee tools that have high battery demands. Impacts and drills are fine, but saws and others that pull a lot of juice I'm buying DeWalt. Owning both the flexvolt miter saws as well as the table saw, I have seen flexvolt batteries get warm but nothing has happened to them yet. This 578 is a beast, will be adding it to my arsenal.

So the power detect for general purpose, Milwaukee for lots of hard thin stuff and flex volt for serious stuff. I have Makita, but I may get flexvolt later on.

If all 3 saws had the same new blade it could have made a big difference. Not a fair comparison since most people ditch the oem blades. Great job otherwise, best comparison I have seen.

Just bought it man it's got power I put it up against my corded Porter Cable and it was slightly more powerful, you get better sightlines with blade left but the blade right isn't bad especially with the light, and you get less sawdust all over you plus I can't stand those wormdrive style saws they're too heavy and awkward
I have a milwaukee that you tested with and it's on its second rebuild of the circuit boards will not run and I only use it occasionally...so I need to finish my garage build with rough cut 2 x10 hemlock joists 12" oc 40 x 40 I just bought the 60 volt dewalt hope it lasts! Will not use milwaukee for my skill saw.
The Power Detect blade looked used, prior to the test.
The worm drive style saw (577) has 2400 watts out where the direct drive style (578) has 2456 watts out. The worm drive style saw was basically their first higher powered model but they released it by itself not as a group with the new line flexvolt stuff but just like the new line it comes with a 9ah.
Since the worm drive isn't actually a worm drive and just a rear handle direct drive and the watt power out is less than 3 percent different I don't imagine there would be much difference in power between the 577 and 578 so its not worth it to redesign the tool for a whole 3 percent more power. The new 60v stuff is equivalent to around 3hp, previous version (575) and all other flexvolt of that gen had around 2.2 hp. Based on those numbers itll be crazy to see next gen. If they make one. I have the 577. Not once have I wanted more power. Amazed every time I cut something. Like it's barely there.
I'm definitely a dewalt fan but this was embarrassing for milwaukee. Their fuel should be able to place much closer to the flexvolt for it being their top tier tool. Based on the temps afterwards (because that's what damages batteries) I'd say even the power detect beat it. I would have liked to see matching blades on all to rule out faults in one manufacturers blades but still shows alot of useful info.
I've owned the flexvolt saw for a couple years now and finally got around to using it. Yeah, I don't need it. Anyways, the thing is amazing. Went through 100 yr old redwood siding I needed to cut to fit into a moving van like butter. Like butter. Quiet too.
I have heard that the power detect with the new 8ah battery with 21700 cells is just as good though.

If he used the 12.0 battery in Milwaukee there would be no cut outs or overheated battery, the flexvolt probably would have still won, but it would have been a lot closer.
