What about the comics made by Jack Chick (not to be confused with Chick tracts)? My favorite is “Primal Man?” because of how scientifically inaccurate AND weird it was.
My dad took me to see the Power Team when I was around 6 or 7. Not gonna lie, as cheesy as their schtick was, the actual feats of strength were entertaining for a little kid to watch.
This is the perfect comic for Atop the fourth wall. I can see him doing a Cuttery gag, where he shows us a clip from The boondocks. If not that, something else entirely.
The Power Team came to my church when I was in junior high. I don’t remember all the details but the show was pretty entertaining. I do recall one of the members was touted as the strongest all natural body builder, and I asked my parents “are they saying he’s the only one who doesn’t use steroids?” And they said “yeah, I think that’s what that means.”
I remember when those guys would go touring, and they did a show at our elementary school, and even as young kid, i thought this was weird to have at a a school. I distinctly remember our teachers were extremely uncomfortable with the whole thing, especially when they handed out flyers for their megashow. By the next school year, the principal had been replaced. I was 10-11 at the time, but looking back, it was REALLY FUCKIN WEIRD!!
Frankly, John Jacobs was more interested in making money and selling merch than they were in evangelizing. A lot of the stuff they did on stage were parlor tricks that you didn't need to be a bodybuilder to do. And the other stuff was standard carnival strongman stuff. Heck, my dad was involved in karate for decades. He wasn't a bodybuilder and I saw him do a LOT of breaks like they did in their shows. Some of that stuff, back in the 70's my dad's karate school would add a couple of stunts like that to their public karate demonstrations just for fun. We used to break concrete and cinder blocks all the time. And I've seen my old karate instructor, Mr. Beaudoin break huge blocks of ice. I miss all those people from back then. Mr. Beaudoin and my father both recently passed away.
I met these guys once. A local church brought them to our community. They seemed like overly masculine, steroid filled dude bros at the time. I don't know if they were on steroids or not just gave off that vibe. With that said, they were nice guys and gave the view point of being dedicated to their faith but I think crap came out later about them that wasn't so great.
I don’t care how strong you are, no way you are going to pick up a bulldozer blade. Join the power team for $100 a month? WTF?! That was a LOT of money, particularly in the 90s. Like I'm imagining Jesus and Moses with their own corny catchphrases, Judas as that ineffective schemer villain whose always plotting, maybe three backgrounds that gets cycled a lot and the final episode with Jesus on the cross going 'aw phooey' or something.
The Power Team always reminded me of one of my favorite quotes from Jesus: "Why do you look at the speck in your brother's eye and pay no attention to the board in your own eye? First break the board in your own eye. Then you will be able to see clearly and remove the speck from your brother's." Christ's wisdom is timeless.
