Wow! What a great day to have this topic! I have been fascinated with fungi for so many years and a mushroom hunter through all seasons. I never tire of reading hearing about fungi. Paul Stamets is another inspirational and informative fun-golocist 🤣
This is one of the top programs on TH-cam. How tragic that normal television has never been able to produce anything this informative, useful or able to fundamentally alter and save the life. Science turned into daily application turned into how can I alter my lifestyle without being a scientist. Simply put brilliant
I lived near a Belgian forest for several years and there was a "Mushroom Club" who held an annual mushroom hunt and who had experts at the hunt to help identify the ones we found in the woods. There were many big red shrooms in our forest. Turns out some will make you high but apparently some can make you dead. Always ask an expert.
Wouldn't be surprised if some of your wild shrooms in Belgium would be toxic, up here in the Netherlands there have been cases of asylum seekers picking mushrooms, unaware that they were toxic and having a really bad time (IE hospital admission). More to the point of the video, I try to eat mushrooms multiple times a week, I just hate how they always come in a big plastic tray. In the supermarket, at least. The organic produce stand in town, at the saturday market, has their produce unpacked, so I always try to be early to have a good pick of mushrooms, as well as fresh herbs and greens (like cavolo and arugula), potatoes and root veg, stuff that is usually packaged in the grocery store.
Warning! There are people with serious mushroom allergies!!!!!!!!!!! I love the Sheldrakes and Jill Purce. But I’d be a hospital case with mushrooms.⛑️⛑️
Fascinating! It re-awoke a desire to buy a more diverse supply of mushrooms and to eat more each day. I will do this in the hope of helping my immune system fight against non curable follicular lymphoma currently whilst on 'watch and wait'.
@@dorothyharland9904 , non curable is a word that science uses when they don't see a drug or solution. I see those words as an invitation to find a new, strictly personal way back to health. I have seen many non-curable people do so. Maybe you are one go them, too😇
Loved the analogy of Merlin S, where he described his ordinary brain as a 'garden', that under the influence of the researchproject with LSD opened up so he experienced a much larger world outside that garden, that gave insight in the relativity of gardening (around minute 30). I had a similar breakthrough experience without LSD and without mushrooms. Once you are aware of this bigger picture you must integrate those bigger insights so others can see them, too. Thanks Merlin, for doing what you do. Also loved that Tim S described how the use of certain mushrooms helps in cancer treatment. Now presented as making chemo- therapy 50% more effective, it may effectively be the other around. Chemo kills some cancers effectively, but killing is not the way to heal. Mushroom may help dissolve cancer somehow. Big Pharma kills (the 'brain solution') whereas mushrooms may dissolve and heal (the wholistic, natural solution). Time will show, I guess...
Totally. I'm so glad that Zoe has finally gotten onto this. Are you aware of the whole Sheldrake/ Purce family's work? Rupert S, Cosmo S and Jill Purce: fascinating and inspiring in their complementarity through differenciation

I made a soup this week where the stock was dehydrated mushrooms cooked in chicken stock then pulverized with the immersion blender. Then fresh museums were sautéed and added sliced for texture. This was incredibly flavorful as compared to my version made with just fresh mushrooms.
I eat mushrooms every day. I make a soup in a similar way to your method. I'm 73 & most people think i'm 50. My doctors concur with this. Besides, they are delicious.
@JohnHostetter-nm1jw Rude and nonsensical. Saying that you’re buy mushrooms by subscription says nothing whatsoever about health. It’s just alerting others who may like mushrooms for whatever reason where to get them.
As I point Ted out, As I pointed out , I wasn’t trying to say any about health ( although I’ve a lot to say, but I doubt you’d cope! ) I was simply giving a steer as to a good place to buy for freshness and variety.
Psilocybin mushrooms and psychedelics, as a whole, have shown substantial promise as beneficial agents that can truly aid individuals grappling with mental health difficulties.
I totally agree! Psilocybin mushrooms and psychedelics in general have shown great potential in helping people with mental health issues. It's truly remarkable how effective they can be in treating depression and anxiety.
It's genuinely remarkable how people can have completely distinct encounters with psychedelics. A friend and I experimented with them for the first time, ingesting the exact same quantity simultaneously, and yet our experiences were uniquely different and equally wonderful.
@OliviaCharlotte-ex8mr that's awesome!! Good on ya! ❤ It gets easier over the years. my grown kids and I (medicinally) dose mushrooms every few months. My son (21) stopped drinking and using cannabis almost immediately. I haven't wanted my "crutches" in over a year! We do get better and I'm so glad that the benefits of shrooms is coming to light. *Edit- forgot to add that my daughter was able to go off her anxiety meds too thanks to shrooms ❤️
I think that it would be good to point out that fungi that we can’t or don’t eat, are still so important to retain the natural cycle of life, people can easily comment or isolate them as harmful, they are not! They just serve another benefit to life in a different aspect!
I am fascinated with Merlin's level of exuberance and enthusiasm regarding fungi and plant life. This is the guy our president relies on when our planet faces a global fungi problem, he's our real world Jeff Goldblum.
Mushrooms completely turned my life around my anxiety and panic attack disappeared and my personality changed into a much more generous and loving person
Currently eating a fabulous soup with salmon belly, fennel, sweet onion, bok choy, orange and yellow peppers, and foraged amber jelly fungus. It is a great starter forage as there are no toxic look a-likes and it grows throughout winter and is a great reason to go out for a walk. 😊
This is great. I really appreciate when people let the experts speak and simply prompt for more information. Massive admiration for Merlin I could listen to him talk so enthusiastically about mushrooms all day 😁
Fungi are amazing. They are so diverse and their role in shaping ecosystems is profound. I have been interested in them since I was a teenager, especially the edible varieties, and always look forward to the different fruiting seasons. I am writing at the beginning of May, and today enjoyed a dish of lamb stew with St George's Mushroom, which was delicious. Later in the year, there will be Hen of the Woods, Chanterelle, Parasol, Penny Bun, Oyster, Velvet Shank, and a host of other, fabulous fungi to enjoy. Even the tough bracket fungi, such as Artist's Bracket, Birch Polypore and King Alfred's Cakes have their uses, as food, medicine, wound dressing, or tinder. Thanks for a wonderful session.
"Entangled Life" will change your view of life on this planet and everywhere else. Doctors Merlin (!) and father Rupert have changed my understanding of all that is natural more than any other authors in decades of study.
Glad Merlin stood up for concentrated extracts, it is possible to get mixes of 5 or 6 mushrooms containing active ingredients. Easy to take these daily.
A really fascinating discussion here. I must say the British are (still) comparative strangers to the joy of wild fungi. Even local pharmacies in rural France will happily take your collected forage and send them off to a laboratory for certain identity. At least we're now talking about the subject. A word to the wise: try to hunt down Wood Blewits (Lepista Nuda) which require cooking. They're hard to confuse with anything really nasty and even survive the frosts of winter. BUT ALWAYS make sure of identification of anything you intend to use in the kitchen.
For a better selection of mushrooms, try a large Asian Grocery store. The one I frequent has close to twenty fresh varieties in addition to several dried varieties.
Fascinating although only skimped I’m surprised not more was said about the amazing effect rather rapid I’ve been able to watch recuperating memory and also general well being of a 93 yr old friend who’s reversed the process of Alzheimer and now is fun again and remembers every conversation! With Lions Mane taking 2 capsules a day . A story worth spreading I think !!
One of my absolute favorites to add to sauces, gravies etc, is dried puffballs. Taste is very average fresh, but dried, the delicious umami aroma really adds something special to dishes. Derek Sarno is my favorite vegan mushroom chef. Really inventive and inspiring. Considering facilitating undoing the roadblocks in nutrition cycles human excess has produced, inserting our dietary needs into the saprophytic part of cycles seems like a good idea. Loved this podcast ❤
So pleased Merlin mentioned mushroom soup, one of my favourites, which I usually make with a good chicken stock, but I'll definitely be giving the Miso base a try very soon 👍
I use a variety of mushrooms in my daily life for natural medicines. Im a completely different person than i used to be. Also my grown children and i microdose every few months. Cubensis has totally changed our lives for the better. ❤ My son (21) and I have no desire to use alcohol or other drugs - not even cannabis. We're also incredibly neurodivergent which can cause panic attacks and depression. But its alot easier to walk through life since finding the right medicine. 👍🏼
The whole family is amazing. His brother’s name is Cosmo and he’s an avantgarde musician. You have to go and Google the family. their parents were very very interesting people and you can see how Merlin and Cosmo (I think the names say it all!) were influence in becoming who they are by their parents.
Buying fresh mushrooms from a local, preferably small scale grower, is going to guarantee you much better flavour, nutrition and satisfaction and support your local farmers 😀
I have been dealing with sinus, migraines, and lung issues for 2 plus years. Yesterday I took some reishi powder and sprinkled a bit in my tea. Upon taking it I could feel something pop in my sinus area. I can feel the mushroom working on me...and I slept incredibly deeply. I will be taking this stuff from now on. If it can create this shift in one day, I can't imagine what I will feel like a year from now.

Its been 2 days. And i intend to eat them everyday. Can't wait to order the book.
What a beautifully eloquent human being. Einstein said, if you can't explain it simply enough, you don't understand it well enough. Merlin Sheldrake clearly understands most intensely and can give this to us, no condescention, in beautifully clear language, live with highy illustrative metaphors, a massive understanding of fungal life !!!
I am Italion , I’ve picked mushrooms all my life with my grandfather and farther .DONT NOT PICK WILD MUSHROOMS!unless you really know what you are doing . You also need a licence to pick mushrooms in certain areas.
Merlin is truly incredible, obviously inspired by his father but brave enough to step forward on his own and in mycology of all things, I hope they’ll co-author a book about mycology and morphogenetic fields ! Fascinating with the mycelium matrix to be considered !
As a hp and mucotherapist I'm not at all enchanted by so called * psychedelic-ones* but I use Cordyceps militaris and others in combination with OM to go against psychic imbalances, incl. gut restaurings..Btw. mushypowders are considered as adaptogens, only the toughy extracts are known by ingredients that work in cancer and other sever sicknesses..I never would use ppowder alone in such circumstances..🎉😊
I remember having some minor surgery years ago and at that point I had never done any kind of drug at all. I didn't even drink small amounts of coffee or alcohol. They hit me with an intravenous dose of Demerol and I felt worst so after my mushroom hit I found a better part of myself.

Thank you for helping spread the word about these healing compounds! When used in proper context, they are life changing and so good for us. They've changed my life for the better and I'm so grateful for them.
This video is a huge eye opener!!! How is it with hydroponic grown vegetables? Are they also "lazy" and without the medicin that fungus gives to the plant in natural environment?
I'm a huge believer in mushrooms & health for us and the planet, my parents thought I was crazy when telling them the benefits of magic mushrooms & most of the other varieties for just health & how they help. I'm glad I came across your channel today. Of course I subscribed and hit the bell for notifications. This was a great video you guys put out today covering many of the concerns & health benefits & how they play a huge role in the ecosystem which I'm heavily involved in. Thank you for doing what you guys do, which is spreading real knowledge. Because its sad that our government wants us sick & eating un healthy so we keep paying into big pharma. Which is really sick thing to be doing instead of trying to create a more natural healthy lifestyle for the citizens of our awesome planet
Very lucky here in Singapore, there is a wide variety of mushrooms and they are plentiful and cheap. I love to dehydrate slices of King oyster and grill shiitake with 5 spice to make a filling for pancakes like peking duck
Psilocybin mushrooms have definitely had a positive impact on my mental health. They've been really helpful for me in dealing with anxiety and depression.
Thanks for the interesting information! I wonder why the two scientists didn't mention the enormous ability of fungus to detox the environment such as algues do in the oceans. Therefore wild growing mushroms have a higher amount of f.i. heavy metals and one should not eat them too often. Thats what I was told. Also, I use Reishi and Cordyceps Capsules filled with the grinded whole mushroms, hyphes, spores and mycels on a regular basis. I lost my severe hayfever, rheumatic issues and liver and kidneys recovered after a very dangerous sepsis. I adore fungis. Sorry for my spelling mistakes, I'm German.
even with the immense versatility of such an amazing organism merlin has great skill in conveying precise fascinating information without overstating it
Sheldrake and Spector are well-experienced fieldguides exploring the kingdom of fungi (must be Rupert's son by his mannerisms). The sterile set plus the n+1 seating gaps between host and guests are a real blast from the 80s.
I love Merlin's awe of Fungi, and the consideration made of their possessing intelligence we can't conceive of. I wish more people would entertain such considerations, extending to the Plant Kingdom as well. This is one area where I struggle with the vegan discernment that killing animals is "bad" while killing Plants (and Fungi) is supposedly fine. We seem to discount Plants and Fungi but in actuality we are too different and too ignorant to understand and communicate with their kind.
Now, how I agree with you, Starbuck2100. I do question though that the vegan propensity to kill plants and grow more grains, whilst moralising over eating animals, is in fact Discernment. Discernment is supposed to be evidence-based, but I don't find that anywhere in the Veggie or Vegan rationale. They focus their views on a morality, which blocks the wonders of understanding the systems and interrelationships of all things ecological. Merlin S tells his ecological story beautifully.
I always remember Dr. Paul Stamets from Star Trek Discovery which was based on the real Dr. Paul Stamets who, as far as I know, an expert in fungi whenever I see or hear the word mushroom.
Regarding LSD, it reminds me of Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor's Ted talk, "My Stroke of Insight". She describes the shutting down of the left side of her brain due to stroke. Her right brain came forward, undamaged, and what she described is similar to the broadening of thought... described in the doctor's trip. Perhaps it just shuts down the egotistical left brain which diminishes most of the universe to narrow it down enough to begin to be understood by us ignorant humans.
OMG! Thank you. So happy to hear that I may be able to save my memory and my mind. I must get back to the conversation regarding the value of MUSHROOMS.
Great convo! Here in my area of Georgia, in the U.S. I eat a lot of Portobellas "Baby Bella" cooked and raw. Mainly at breakfast in my eggs or raw in salads.
You realize portobello mushrooms MUST be cooked in night temperature right? They contain agaritine which is cancerogenic. So you have a chance of getting cancer. Small but why take a risk and eat them raw.
I have started growing my own mushrooms lately, two types of Lions Mane, two types of Shiitake, at least 5 types of Oyster. I also plan in the near future to grow Chestnut, Enoki. I usually eat mushrooms at least 3 meals a week and planning to bring that up to 5 days a week. Mushrooms are also really good as long term food supply because as long as you have bags and wood pellets you can grow hundreds of pounds per month very cheaply and very quickly year around.
Excellent podcast with Ann excellent panel that really patented a well balanced abs diverse talk on mushrooms. Feeling enlightened - thank you so much to all 😊.
I took LSD and magic mushrooms when I was 22 until I was 28 and never had a negative experience. I believe I underwent some rewiring which has had a very positive effect on my thinking.

I wouldn't have been able to do that shit without the help of psilocybin.
where do you buy them from?
Scammers on this thread,do not buy from where they say
Thank god for TH-cam huh. I agree.
What a lovely human being Merlin is!
yeah, he has a certain charisma, reminds me a bit of actor Michael Sheen.
He looks like porcelain doll
Yeah, definitely a fun guy.
Man is high 😂
I lived near a Belgian forest for several years and there was a "Mushroom Club" who held an annual mushroom hunt and who had experts at the hunt to help identify the ones we found in the woods. There were many big red shrooms in our forest. Turns out some will make you high but apparently some can make you dead. Always ask an expert.
As I was told long ago, "All fungi are edible, but some only once!"
@@MrDavil43what do you mean by only once?
@@ericaawake9503 Meaning that the once will be the last thing you do!
I absolutely love Merlin Sheldrake, and his brilliant dad, Rupert. Both absolutely delightful personalities around those brains!
Warning! There are people with serious mushroom allergies!!!!!!!!!!!
I love the Sheldrakes and Jill Purce. But I’d be a hospital case with mushrooms.⛑️⛑️
His surname almost sounds like a type of mushroom too!
Maybe you are one go them, too😇
@@janel342 His brother Cosmo's quite a composer.
Wow, Merlin Sheldrake! I am very excited for this. His book, 'Entangled Lives' is a masterpiece!
He looks totally zonked! 😂
Totally. I'm so glad that Zoe has finally gotten onto this. Are you aware of the whole Sheldrake/ Purce family's work? Rupert S, Cosmo S and Jill Purce: fascinating and inspiring in their complementarity through differenciation
Oh well p stamets convinced me to hp fight cancer with turkey tail
I enjoy mushrooms without any issues , but have true allergy to penicillin and a severe reaction to Quorn products I wonder what the links are .
N turmaric brock sprouts ngreen tea also pomigranit and apple beetroot n red cabbage ginger n garlic kimche and some roast meats cabage n cellery for roughage just to heal and now no sugar n not to many carbs befor I was a sugar carb eater now trying to use less carbs n sugar but it's all hard as I love to eat ! Carbs n sugar
I love how nerdy this is. I’m totally sold on eating more mushrooms! 🍄🍄
you did notice Paul Stamets saying normal edible mushrooms are carcinogenic .. but that its more than his life is worth to spread that bit of truth ?
I made a soup this week where the stock was dehydrated mushrooms cooked in chicken stock then pulverized with the immersion blender. Then fresh museums were sautéed and added sliced for texture. This was incredibly flavorful as compared to my version made with just fresh mushrooms.
⁸
Those sliced Museums’d be a bit musty…rather an interesting flavour profile 😊😊
@@brigidlaffey7343I was going to try this recipe but my local Sainsbury was fresh out of museums 😊😋
I eat mushrooms every day. I make a soup in a similar way to your method. I'm 73 & most people think i'm 50. My doctors concur with this. Besides, they are delicious.
@@brigidlaffey7343 😂😂 Good catch! Stupid AI!
I read this young man's book and it was one of the best ever. Amazing to be able to listen to such a high quality programme
I’ve just started a subscription with The Mushroom Barn. Great for getting a variety of mushrooms and fresher than supermarkets
@JohnHostetter-nm1jw Rude and nonsensical. Saying that you’re buy mushrooms by subscription says nothing whatsoever about health. It’s just alerting others who may like mushrooms for whatever reason where to get them.
As I point
Ted out,
As I pointed out , I wasn’t trying to say any about health ( although I’ve a lot to say, but I doubt you’d cope! ) I was simply giving a steer as to a good place to buy for freshness and variety.
Where do u find the mushroom barns?
Psilocybin mushrooms and psychedelics, as a whole, have shown substantial promise as beneficial agents that can truly aid individuals grappling with mental health difficulties.
I totally agree! Psilocybin mushrooms and psychedelics in general have shown great potential in helping people with mental health issues. It's truly remarkable how effective they can be in treating depression and anxiety.
On instgram?
It's genuinely remarkable how people can have completely distinct encounters with psychedelics. A friend and I experimented with them for the first time, ingesting the exact same quantity simultaneously, and yet our experiences were uniquely different and equally wonderful.
Can he send to me in Ohio?
All the problems that these compounds can help solve, and the potential for peace they have.

This is great. I really appreciate when people let the experts speak and simply prompt for more information. Massive admiration for Merlin I could listen to him talk so enthusiastically about mushrooms all day 😁
@mrs_Mccoyscammer!I see you Mrs!!!
Doctors Merlin (!) and father Rupert have changed my understanding of all that is natural more than any other authors in decades of study.
despite saying that vaccine skeptics were dangerous lunatics ?? (rupert that is). I found that so ironic.
Merlin you have such a wonderful mellifluous voice.
Love this fascinating convo.
please do an episode on how spices affect the gut biome! and if paticular ones link to particular bacterium, conditions or responses
For a better selection of mushrooms, try a large Asian Grocery store. The one I frequent has close to twenty fresh varieties in addition to several dried varieties.
Thank you , deffo do that
Fascinating although only skimped I’m surprised not more was said about the amazing effect rather rapid I’ve been able to watch recuperating memory and also general well being of a 93 yr old friend who’s reversed the process of Alzheimer and now is fun again and remembers every conversation!
The vocal fry on the host here . . . . ahhhhhhh. . . .is ahhhhhhhh . . . . killing ahhhhhhhh . . . me.
I am in the kitchen, making a delicious mushroom soup while listening to the podcast!
The whole family is amazing. His brother’s name is Cosmo and he’s an avantgarde musician. Aldous Huxley. Doors of Perception. Springs to mind.

I’ve found mixed frozen mushrooms more cheaply than fresh variety packs, worth looking into the supermarket freezer section.
Lower quality, freezing mushrooms degrades them.
Buying fresh mushrooms from a local, preferably small scale grower, is going to guarantee you much better flavour, nutrition and satisfaction and support your local farmers 😀
Frozen produce is awful quality, including mushrooms. But if that is all you have access to, better than nothing!
Just bought Entangled Life! Thoroughly enjoyed this conversation. What a lovely bloke Merlin is.
A man from Ohio ate mushroom from his yard and almost died. Just buy in the groceries. See Inside Edition story just this week 2-1-24

I was told to limit mushrooms because I have high uric acid. I would appreciate a response as I'd like to eat more mushrooms but I'm hesitant. Thanks
